I really wanted to like this place, especially because we had just left Legoland starving and this restaurant was conveniently on our way to our next hotel. They were also kind enough to take us about 30 minutes before closing, which we really appreciated. We ordered a chirashi don and several rolls to share. The rolls were tasty, but the sashimi in the chirashi was just average. One of the sashimi slices didn't taste quite right and I remember thinking to myself, "That's very fishy, bad fishy!" I stopped eating the bowl and passed the rest to my husband. We left feeling grateful that we were able to find a decent place to eat after 9 p.m. Unfortunately, later that night, I had to run to the bathroom multiple times, and my stomach didn't settle down until around 1 a.m. I can't say for certain if their food or what caused it, but given the timing and the fact that the chirashi was questionable, I do wonder if something I ate there was not fresh. I have a pretty strong stomach and rarely have issues with food. read more

They turned on the AC after it was very balmy.... Seated very quickly, took our orders. The food took a bit. They forgot the Tofu. I had to ask for it. I am not saying you should comp it but most do when you have to ask for an item missed and is served after you have pretty much have eaten. I did add the creamy Shrimp after we placed the initial order and the tofu came after. We ordered the Yellow Tail Special Roll, Hot Night, Spider Roll, Tofu and Creamy shrimp. Came here for the first time during happy hour, where many menu items are 50% off, making it a great opportunity to try a variety of dishes. We ordered the baked salmon roll, baked lobster roll, beef bulgogi entrée, and spicy chicken teriyaki entrée. The baked rolls were the highlight of the meal--both were incredibly flavorful, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The beef bulgogi was also very good, and I especially appreciated that it came with a generous amount of vegetables. The only disappointment was the spicy chicken teriyaki. It had very little teriyaki sauce, was overloaded with onions, and the chicken itself was quite dry. Overall, it was a great first visit, and the happy hour specials offered excellent value. MIZUKIYAMA SUSHI @ DEL MAR This place is located in the Del Mar Highlands plaza, which is honestly a really nice area to walk around. There's a good amount of shops and restaurants nearby, and parking was easy since the garages are free, which is always a plus in this area. My friend and I came here for dinner because we were craving sushi, and overall I'd say the experience was just okay. The restaurant itself was clean and had a nice atmosphere, and the lady helping us was friendly throughout the meal, so the service wasn't bad at all. For food, I ordered a tuna roll, my friend got the nigiri platter, and we also shared the calamari. Everything came out pretty quickly, and presentation-wise it looked decent, but the sushi itself honestly wasn't my favorite. The fish didn't taste as fresh as I was hoping, and some of it had a slightly fishy taste that threw me off a bit. The calamari was probably the best part of the meal since it came out crispy and flavorful. Overall, I wouldn't say the food was terrible, but it definitely didn't stand out compared to other sushi spots in San Diego. It was decent for what it was, but probably not somewhere I'd personally go out of my way to come back to. read more

We had takeout so I cannot comment on ambiance. Given my love for sushi and places like Ken's and Sushi Ota, I have a high bar. Sadly, the rice was dry and tasteless. When you start there, it is almost impossible to recover. The tuna sashimi had a funk and chew to it that suggests it was old. We stopped eating rolls that had it on top like the Del Mar and the spicy tuna roll for fear they used old fish. We ordered on a Thursday, not a Monday which can be sketch. The rolls were unbalanced - the rice to crab filling to thickness of fish were off. We threw out half the order. Not sure how it has such a great rating. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but it ended up being one of the more disappointing sushi meals I've had. The biggest issue was the quality of the fish, especially the tuna. It tasted like a saku block that had been sitting out for hours. The texture was rubbery instead of tender, and it had an overwhelmingly fishy taste instead of the rich, buttery flavor you expect from good tuna. It was honestly one of the worst pieces of tuna I've had and set the tone for the rest of the meal. There were also several quality-control issues throughout the meal. The salad tasted off, the rice tasted like it had been sitting out instead of being freshly made, the crunchy rice was overcooked, the chicken had a strange texture, and there was even a lemon seed left in one of the salmon rolls. Not everything was bad. The soup was fine, the gyoza was good, the tuna crunchy roll was enjoyable, and I liked the tempura udon, although the broth was much sweeter than I expected almost to sweet. Service didn't help the experience either. The restaurant was almost empty, but we still had to flag someone down just to get our water refilled. Overall, there were simply too many problems across the meal to justify coming back. A few good dishes could not make up for the poor fish quality, inconsistent execution, and lack of attention to detail. read more

Sadly, one of my favorite sushi bars near my house has gone downhill in quality. I have written other great reviews about this place, but they do not care about their customers anymore nor their fish quality. I just came from having dinner there and we ordered the Toro roll. It is one of the more expensive rolls on the menu at $22. It has shrimp tempura some crab meat and then the roll in the picture is topped with a nice slice of Toro. What we got had diced up, minced watery Toro on top that was very un appetizing and wet in texture. When I showed the waitress the picture and she talked with the sushi chef, he did not care, seemed very annoyed, and said he would not be redoing the roll for us. He actually raised his voice at her in front of us as well which was unacceptable in front of guests.They need to describe it as minced up toro and Change that picture on the menu! The waitress seemed embarrassed that they would not correct it. In addition, their basic tuna and salmon rolls use to be really good. The fish in these was very inconsistent with some of the cut roll pieces having almost all rice with the tiniest piece of fish. We were sitting right at the sushi bar as well and normally they greet you . The chef with the grey hair pony tail was so rude. They didnt even say hello and all seemed very unwelcoming. The whole experience was really upsetting and I will not be coming back there again. I had brought a friend telling her this place was great too. We were fairly regular customers here (7 years) for both dine in and regular take out too and used to be greeted by the manager who was a very nice man. I wonder if he realizes who he's leaving in charge is treating long-term regular customers this way. Such a shame. read more

Today was my first time trying this restaurant and it was delicious! This restaurant is located at One Paseo in Del Mar. Plenty of parking available in the lot. It's located next to salt and straw. We were seated right away and our server, Yuna, was the absolute best! We came during happy hour time which is everyday between 3:30-5:30pm I believe. Honestly, it's such a steal! We ordered about 4 rolls, some hand-rolls, and a couple appetizers and spent $80 for 3 of us! I'd definitely recommend if you're in the area. Food review: Vegetable tempura: (3/5) It was average, but you get a good portion! Jalapeños: (4/5) These were tasty and the tempura breading gave it great texture! Garlic edamame: (4/5) Overall pretty good flavor to the edamame. Some were just super hard for my preference. Can't beat it for the price though. Salmon handroll: (5/5) Super yummy! They were not stingy with the salmon. The roll was stuffed and it was good! I'd def order again! Ex girlfriend or boyfriend: (5/5) This was actually my favorite roll! It has no rice and comes with some salad as well. I could have been satisfied with 2 of these lol. Washington roll: (3/5) It was average, but the salmon and avocado were very fresh tasting. My boyfriend and I went here for lunch for the first time on a Sunday and had a lovely time. It was easy to get a table, service was great, and they had a nice playlist in the background which gave a relaxing atmosphere. We got the Del Mar roll, sashimi (small) which comes with miso soup, and garlic edamame. The roll was my favorite thing we got - it was SO good! The sashimi was fresh and beautifully presented. They even gave us a couple of pieces (I think seared fatty salmon?) on the house which was a really nice touch. It's a little pricey but I guess that's to be expected for One Paseo in Carmel Valley, but their hot sake was a bargain at $4 (small) or $6 (large). They have a happy hour each day with select items for 40% off so I would be interested in trying that one day. Overall we had a great experience and we will be back! read more

Delicious! I ordered the chirashi donburi and it was so fresh and good! The chirashi pieces were Q.U.A.L.I.T.Y. Initially I was skeptical because it could be overpriced sushi in One Paseo but it was actually really good value because the pieces were THICK. AND I got miso soup with it. Service was great and quick! I came in around noon-ish and was sat right away. Servers kept checking to make sure everything was good. The inside is a cute little Japanese restaurant. A nice sushi restaurant; went for Valentine's Day and it wasn't busy during lunch. The rolls were really good and the fish was fresh. The salmon mango roll really surprised me - the sweetness of the mango worked really well. The server was nice and attentive to our table. The restaurant was not busy (many open tables) but there was a pretty decent line for take out. The ambiance was a bit dark/dim even when it was very sunny outside, but it was a nice place. 3 rolls and 2 drinks (1 beer, 1 non-alcoholic) came out to around 70$ before tip. Very fast service during dinner on a Saturday! The staff work diligently and the sushi is fresh. My favorite was the TNT roll- the tuna is top quality. We did, however, have a little accident. We were sitting at the sushi bar and they handed us nigiri (we thought it was the toro nigiri we ordered) Well- it wasn't. Since we were starving we didn't have time to ask questions! We ate the yellowtail nigiri and when the chef and waitress found out the mishap, they made us feel stupid by asking "If you didn't order it, then why did you eat it?!" Uh- we didn't know? We're not raw fish experts. We asked if we would be charged and they kept skirting around the question and instead offered us a complimentary miso soup for us which was nice at least. We did get charged ($30) for the mistake since we ate it all. Admittedly, it was pretty darn good quality. The Toro was a little too fatty in my opinion (couldn't chew it all and had to spit some out). The other rolls (Crunch and Caterpillar) were as expected and I love that they provide cucumbers along with ginger and wasabi. If you write a Yelp review, they give you a free green tea ice cream.
