Very disappointed with our recent experience at Gami Sushi. The quality of the sushi was extremely poor compared to what we expected. The fish did not taste fresh, and several items seemed like they had been sitting out for far too long. Unfortunately, the situation became much worse after our meal. Multiple people in our group became sick afterward with symptoms consistent with food poisoning. While it's impossible to know with absolute certainty, this was the only meal we shared, and the timing strongly suggests it was the source. We've eaten here in the past and had much better experiences, which makes this visit even more disappointing. My friend introduced me to his favorite sushi restaurant. I can see why he comes here every week! The sushi was good and reasonably priced. The fish was fresh. Miso soup was flavorful yet not overly salty. What really stood out was the homemade salad dressing. You can taste the freshness, which was so much better than any of the store bought stuff. They used fresh ingredients to make their own dressing and it was absolutely delicious! They really won me over with the salad dressing! In fact, loved it so much that I had to request the restaurant to sell me a small container. I normally don't like much dressing in my salad, but this was an exception. The food presentation was a bit on the sloppy side, the rolls weren't well made but the taste was there. For large parties, they have the large sushi boats that looked pretty! We ordered a pot of roasted rice tea to share. I liked the teapot. It was such a clever idea! When you place the pot over your cup, the pressure automatically dispenses the tea. When you lift it, it stops. I might have to buy one of these! Service was excellent! The server and restaurant owner were very friendly. 2024: visited regularly, once or twice per month. March 2025: Slow service. Was sitting at the table for 20 mins without proper utilities, no drinks, and no order taken. Appetizer came at the end of the meal. Gave nigiri when sashimi was ordered. Ordered king salmon but regular salmon was given. Food quality went down hill. Uni was not not clean and bitter. My friend and I are always in search of new sushi places for us to try. We were in Del Mar last August. I had read about Gami and wanted to try. It did not disappoint in atmosphere, service or food. Because they do not take reservations for just two, we chose to go at 5:00PM. It was perfect, we were greeted and wanting to sit at the sushi bar where there was plenty of room. The restaurant is located in a strip mall, both indoor and patio seating. It is very small, but felt very open with the tall ceilings. The vibe was energetic as it filled up fast, shortly after our arrival. Service was good, all the servers seem to cover for each other when it is busy, so you never felt ignored. We ordered a bottle of Sake while looking over the menu. We ordered Uni, Smelt Egg, Yellowtail and Salmon Nigiri. We also had a Salmon Skin Hand Roll, an Extra Spicy Fire Roll and Garlic Edamame. All the sushi looked great and tasted fresh and delicious. BTW, the Salmon Skin Hand Roll was excellent, when handed to me, one of the servers came by and told me to eat it first while the skin was still crispy...OMG it was so good. I would definitely go back again when in the San Diego area. Only negative for me is that they don't take reservation. Atmosphere: small, bright and energetic. Service: very good. Went to Gami Sushi on an early Saturday - little before 6. Sat on the patio with our year old puppy. She was welcomed & in spite of being antsy had a good time. We ordered shrimp tempura appetizer, cucumber salad, chicken teriyaki dinner & a Touchdown roll. The food when it came out was delicious. Tempura came out quickly & was crispy/crunchy. My husband's chicken teriyaki came out next & it was a large portion w/veggies. After a short wait, the cucumber salad came. It was nicely seasoned & a good size portion. Unfortunately, my roll took forever. Our waiter was very apologetic because my husband was mostly done w/ his dinner & my roll hadn't appeared. He got us some miso soup, edamame & another beer for my husband as an apology. Class act. When the Touchdown roll came out, it was delicious w/ slices of avocado, soft shell crab w/ sauce on top & krab, shrimp tempura & avocado in middle. Healthy portions. First time here and it was delicious. They recommend Sake and it was amazing, also recommend lots of yummy food options as well. I got the the Sashimi Bibimbob and it tasted so fresh! If you want to come to a restaurant that doesn't inform you of a 20% surcharge for "6 people" and then they dupe you into paying "tip" on top of that, then come here! Make sure you ask for a printout of your check!! While i don't mind paying a normal tip, the fact that they ask you again without the check printout is gross behavior. I would avoid this place. I've been a loyal customer of this restaurant for over 8 years, but after my recent experiences, I'll sadly never return. About 10 days ago, I placed a takeout order that was completely wrong, they sent fish options, which my husband cannot eat. When I called to report it, the staff were quite rude, but told me they'd issue a credit for a future visit. This week, I went back and ordered another takeout meal, planning to use the credit. When I tried to apply it at checkout, the staff started talking among themselves in another language for over 10 minutes, only to finally tell me that "someone else" had already used my credit. I was honestly shocked by the lack of professionalism and respect toward a returning customer. After so many years of coming here, this experience was deeply disappointing. There 10 piece sashimi in a chirashi bowl , I added an order of Santa Barbara uni and it was spectacular. The total order for my wife and son was so reasonable I am not going to quote the price but it should have been triple my bill. This place is easily one of my favorite sushi spots in San Diego, and I am always recommending it to anyone who asks for restaurant recommendations. I found this place on a whim when driving home and was really craving sushi. I hadn't even looked up reviews, just walked in and saw their sushi combo options. I ordered sushi combo A, and have been ordering it ever since! It comes with 5 varying sushi pieces (I always ask for extra of their pickled radish, so so good), sushi roll of your choice, and a miso soup and salad. The staff is always kind and are always giving great service. It is a fairly small restaurant but they also have plenty of seating outside. Sushi Gami has really quality sushi and in my opinion it's pretty fairly priced! The prices are a bit expensive, but I think the quality of their fish is pretty good. Overall, taste is good and service is "ok". Nothing too special. We got the shrimp crunch, ocean, and sunset rolls to share and this was plenty of food for 2 hungry girls. The rolls we got were priced around $12-22, which is pretty good (and standard for any sushi spots tbh). Seating areas are not the most spacious, although they do have some seats outside if you prefer that. Quality is average for the fish itself - but one highlight is they list where each is sourced from. Flavor wise it's Americanized, which is totally fine, I just prefer Japanese run sushi spots. Kaarage was a highlight, as it was perfectly fried with minimal breading (I realllllly hate when it's all breading and no chicken). Went back to Gami Sushi yesterday for a date night with my wife. The staff were so courteous and friendly; we were seated immediately and quickly asked what we wanted to drink! Super good sushi. Ordered to go on a Sunday night and it was quite busy with people, lots of to go orders, a bit chaotic and I had to wait around for an extra 10 min or so but it was well worth it. Quality of the sushi is phenomenal for very reasonable prices imo, about $25 total. I got a Del mar roll and a blue crab roll which I've never seen anywhere before. Both were great.
