CHOCOLATE CRUMB CAKE EATEN IN A HOTEL BED REVIEW: as many know, Entenmann's is a long-standing bakery brand, particularly in the northeastern US. They had a bakery on Long Island and were known for cranking out various types of coffee and crumb cakes, donuts, cookies, you name it. As a kid, when my mom brought home an entenmann's coffee cake or their glazed, cakey "lumpy donuts" (as my sis and I called them) I knew I was in for a treat! Fast forward to today: Entenmann's, along with Arnold, Thomas, Freihofer, and many other formerly regional bakeries throughout the US have been purchased by Grupo Bimbo, a baking conglomerate located south of the border with a HUGE presence there. Grupo Bimbo absolutely dominates the packaged baked good market in Mexico. Unfortunately, whatever they've done to achieve that success in Mexico doesn't translate in the US market. The company's concern obviously lies with money-making above all else: squeeze every penny out of a product while simultaneously removing any and all ingredients that provide taste, texture, and quality. Grupo Bimbo is essentially a strip mining operation. They fool consumers by producing goods that superficially resemble what they know and love, but one bite of an entenmann's product these days reflects the priorities of their parent. In this case, I couldn't wait to enjoy their coffee crumb cake in bed this morning at the hotel to pair with some mystery keurig coffee. Without any cutlery, I used the wooden coffee stirrer provided by the Hilton Garden Inn to cut the cake in a way that would make MacGyver proud. Were the ensuing crumbs all over the comforter worth it? It's a miracle that more crumbs didn't end up on the comforter AFTER I bit into the cake! I could barely hold down this "cake like" product in my gullet. The taste? Nothing but chemicals. It truly tasted "off" in a way I struggle to describe, maybe sweet and sour? The taste is a signal that what you're putting in your body is even more unhealthy than what's expected in a baked good. It did however crumble somewhat like a real cake. Sweet treat this was not. Today, I ate disappointment for breakfast. Don't make the same mistake I did! Spare yourself the bodily harm and skip entenmann's the next time you're at your local grocer. If it's produced by grupo bimbo with a Horsham, PA address on the box, you'll likely throw it into the trash like I did. Life is too short to waste calories in this manner. What a shame. A damn shame!
