We were hoping for a little better here. First, the restaurant is still a bit newish, so it may take time for them to figure out how much food to keep on hand. The primary problem was that they were out of many menu items by 6pm. The dining room is cool with a nice vibe, super friendly waiter and food came from the kitchen pretty quickly. Pimento cheese appetizer was delicious, one of the better versions I've had. Unfortunately the Pierogi were pretty bland and nothing special, and for the high price, just not worth it. Weird arrangement with the coffee shop located in the restaurant as well. Restaurant was out of desserts and coffee, but could not serve any of the desserts from the coffee shop case, as those were part of the coffee shop. Despite that, we will be back next time we visit Salem, and I'm sure they will figure out how to manage supply of food items better so they are not sold out before 6pm. Yes, yes, yes! A restaurant for the culture and the people. The food is simple but the flavors are complex and leaves you wanting more. It's a play on old comfort food or classics. The restaurant is tucked away in a community filled with gardens and a wonderful quaintness. The book exchange program or library checkout program offers a variety of books that helps explains the humanity and beauty of Black people in excellence and glory. It's been a minute since I've been inspired to write a review. This restaurant is one of maybe 3 reasons I wish I lived closer to Salem. The staff was amazing. Iona took special care to offer recommendations on each page of the menu. I love loved the drinks. The first one I tried had watermelon and chocolate, among other things. After taking my first sip, I started talking and stopped mid-sentence because my taste buds were doing something interesting. Hard to describe, but what an experience! I ordered a 2nd recommended drink that was so yummy. I think it has "passport" in its name. The food was also delicious. I especially enjoyed the fried chicken skin. It had just the right amount of sweetness. Oh and the cornbread dipped in honey was bombbbb. My favorite part about this place was the library. The Library of Black Excellence. What a wonderful, welcoming little space. They incentivize patrons to borrow and read their books with free meals! Wonderful idea! Also, they offer a 20% discount on Thursdays for educators. Come here between 5-6pm every day for 40% off food! We had no idea but got lucky and got a great deal. We got the crabbie fries, burger, and pork chop. Fries were a great start. Burger was cooked well and very filling. The pork chop was nice, but I don't think I'd order again. I'm just not a huge pork chop fan but wanted to try theirs. Epilogue is my favorite Salem restaurant and quite possibly my favorite in Oregon. They recently changed the brunch (Saturday and Sunday) from a set menu to a few specials that change weekly (note, they are currently taking a break from serving brunch so just check before going). That's cool and the duck confit I had was great, but their old menu featured breakfast cereal French toast, an absolute delight in every way with thick slices of bread coated in Fruity Pebbles, super crisp on the outside but so tender inside with big dollops of whipped cream. It is truly a dish I dream about, so I'll just say if they happen to have it as an option, order it. I don't care what else there is, get it in addition to your other dishes as you will be doing yourself a disservice if you don't. Now, we've only had brunch and lunch at Epilogue, but everything is divine. The Philly cheesesteak is another favorite, as is anything with crab cakes. I like to order a container of pimiento cheese to take home. I am a pimiento fanatic and theirs is superlative. They are also just about the nicest people anywhere. They have soup on the menu for everyone, meaning a person can walk in and get a bowl even if they can't pay. And Epilogue is not just paying lip service, I have seen it in action. You can tell they really care about the community. Once I came in for a quick meal and had brought a book. I was in a bit of a rush, but as I finished my food the server came by to pick up my plate and said, "you don't need to rush out, feel free to stay and hang with us as long as you'd like." Ugh, makes me teary just thinking of how sweet that was. They have a club where you get four dinners a month and even your own special set up cutlery. What?! Holistically, I love everything Epilogue stands for regarding its connection and approach to the local communities and customers. Their unwavering support for social justice for all is off the chart, with concrete actions backing it up. They offer 20% of your total bill for specific professions weekly: Service Industry specials on Sunday night and Educator and Student discounts on Thursday. Monday Nights with Trivia at 6 pm. For this aspect alone, it respectably earned 5/5! Epilogue Is A Handmade Kitchen! I have been supporting Epilogue since the summer of 2021, even though I no longer live in the area. Since they started the Educator and Student discounts, I drive down from Portland to have dinner at Epilogue on Thursday at least once a month. I love Epilogue's friendly, chill staff and low-key atmosphere. Except for alcohol, sandwiches, and the rotating special menu, I ate everything on the menu. The only reason I gave a 4/5 is the accumulation of consistent food quality during my visits in the last three years. At times, dishes are more dried, lack flavor, and are more lukewarm than others. Here are a few of my favorite and regular orders. Soup For My Family (gf, vegan), $5 for a cup. This is a rotating item as they sell out of each batch depending on the season. If they have it, you have to get it. I have enjoyed this item and have not been disappointed once. Roots and Trees Salad (vegan) and P.N.W. Salad (vegetarian), both for $15. It is refreshing, well-balanced, packed in texture and flavor, and fulfilling. You can add the protein you choose if salad is all you want for an extra cost. I am not a cheese person, so I always opt out of the goat cheese on P.N.W. These come light on the dressing, so ask for a side if you have heavy hands on the dressing. Rabbit Confit, $30: It is delicious when everything is right! There were a few times when the rabbit was a bit dry and barely had any flavor, and the buttermilk biscuit was not moist or old; these were the reasons for a 4/5 overall rating. Pecan Dacquoise, $10: My favorite dessert item at Epilogue. It has everything to satisfy your sweet craving to wrap up your meal without being overwhelmed by sugar or making you feel stuffed. I enjoy all four of their Zero Proof Cocktails, $6. Next, I would love to check out the Cheap Date Night, $60.00 for two, and come on the weekend for their special brunch menu. For $60, you get your choice of any two (2) sandwiches, salads, or staff favorite plates plus one (1) bottle of their choice wine or equivalent zero-proof beverages. Even though the place was nearly empty when we arrived, they just talked amongst themselves. Not a bad thing but their conversations were pretty long and when they walked by, they don't really look in your direction. For food, we got multiple appetizers and entrees to get a good feel of the place. The food came out faster than we expected which was a plus. - Hearing the branches shatter: nice cocktail. A little bit of sweetness - Plum fizz: strong drink and pretty good - Spicy pickled egg: beet flavor was interesting - Duck leg: the duck was cooked nicely, but the other ingredients didn't really flow well. The apple butter and fig added an odd sweetness. And the shiso was a nice visual garnish but didn't go well with the sauce or the duck. - Burrata: the cheese and chicken were good. The honey made the app a little tangy - Mini debawkery: the coleslaw and the sauce for the chicken were both good. However, the chicken was very dry. - Rabbit confit: similar to the chicken, it was very dry and also gamey. The carrots were hard and the sauce didn't add that much flavor. The biscuit also didn't add anything to the dish other than more dryness. Overall, we can see what they're trying to do with the ingredients and presentation, but the food itself was lacking. Epilogue has started Sunday Dinner events. Prefixed menu served family style and communal tables. This was a great experience. The food was delicious: 2 types of green salads, clams, collard greens, roasted Brussels sprouts, quinoa salad, smoked Mac & Cheese, chicken thighs that were perfectly prepared, bread with compound butter, roasted potatoes, and trifle for dessert. Hubs surprised me with this as he knows how I love to try new places. We started with the dips... OH MY GOODNESS the DIPS!!! The pimento cheese spread is TO DIE FOR!! and the fennel jam and the onion jam were so delish! Not to mention the house made dark rye, the corn bread and the homemade biscuit to put them on!! I'd have to say that I preferred the steak, which is odd because I love a good muffuletta - but, I'm also a purist when it comes to this NOLA specialty. I am obsessed with this place! The service was fantastic and the food was even better. Came for brunch on a Sunday around 11am and got seated right away. My husband loved their coffee and his West Philadelphia sandwich (a yummy cheese steak). I had one of their specials which sounded crazy but was absolutely delicious. It was called the Mampionona. It was ginger and garlic spiced pork belly, peanut butter, corn and sweet potato fritter, and curried tomatoes all on a toasted milk bun. I never would have thought to put something like this together but the flavors together were unbelievable in the absolute best way. I wish we had been in town longer to go back and try more dishes. Came in for the first time with our two local friends who had been before their COVID lobby closing. We dined shortly after Epilogue re-opened. Our server was great and managed our extended socializing very well and was super ultra helpful in making sure our experience was excellent. Our cocktails were all wonderful. The food took a loooooong time to come out for the appetizers and entrees, both. We thought maybe it was growing pains after their re-opening, but I'm glad I had eaten a bit before arriving. Our food was pretty good, but not amazing. I've had multiple goat cheese hazelnut salads like the one we got and this one was unremarkable. We also go the West Philadelphia and our friend got the Reading Terminal Market sandwiches and both were dry and nothing special, either. I did appreciate their willingness to make the turnip appetizer vegan when they were out of their only other vegan app. What IS, in fact, special, is Epilogue's overall vibe and the stance they're taking for BLM. Had family visiting from out of town so figured we'd try a new spot for us and go somewhere a little pricier... but the food was all so average! We have been considering eating here for "awhile" and there is a whole lot to like and a few things that could be tuned up. First the menu is really nice, lots of interesting choices. Partner had the pork chop- a perfectly cooked very large piece of meat with interesting sides. I had the crab cakes, not a huge serving but perfectly fine with a corn relish side - also good. So sure, you will eat well here and the prices are good. Two small salads, two mains and a couple of glasses of wine - tip as good yelpers always do - 120.00, more than a good deal. Nice people for sure. A few things that could be improved. It was around 25 minutes between when we were seated , our order taken and the arrival of our food which for some reason included our salads- had they arrived earlier with our wine would have balanced out the wait for our mains. And we were seated at a two-top on the smaller side so there wasn't much room for the plates- they did offer to reseat us but at that point I just wanted to eat. I'll start with the good, because there is plenty. In fact, in most respects, Epilogue is fantastic. Unfortunately, the aspects where it falls short are perhaps those most critical to the overall experience. The people factor is first. The staff are all delightful, well-informed, and just generally a pleasure to interact with. Not to skip to the conclusion too early, but despite my overall rating, I recommend you come here at least once if only for the good company. Epilogue is heavily involved in the local community, supplying food and resources to those who need them, and building up the community spirit of Salem as a whole. The consistency and quality of execution and ingredients at Epilogue is exceptional. You won't find any wilted lettuce or poorly-trimmed pork. The freshness of the ingredients elevates the quality of the dishes. Futhermore, the menu as a whole is well-chosen, with something for everyone. From cheesesteaks and fried chicken for the pickier eaters to duck leg, beef cheek, and even rabbit for the more adventurous. Unfortunately, Epilogue falls short in the construction of each dish I tried. There are two regards in which this is true. First, the timing. With a 6:00 reservation our orders were taken and drinks brought out at 6:30, and the food was at the table about 2 minutes to 7. I understand there's a small kitchen, and at the quality, 30 minutes for prep is long but reasonable. However, the 30 minute gap between seating/ordering drinks and actually receiving the drinks + ordering mains is inexplicable, and was extremely disappointing. Still, that could have been overlooked were it not for the larger issue. Epilogue's dishes provide decent coverage of dietary preferences and food styles while adhering to a common theme. However, despite consistent quality in execution, the design of the dishes is awful. The cider-miso-ginger beef cheek lacks any flavor beyond that of shredded beef. The chutney on the fried eggplant wars with the balsamic reduction rather than complementing it. The port reduction in the sauteed mushrooms is so sweet it overwhelms even the cherry jam and turns a sandwich into a strangely-woody confection. I felt each dish I tried had similar issues. Again, the technique exercised to make each dish was exceptional... but whoever designed the recipes has EXTREMELY different notions of what makes for good food compared to my own. When paying $20-$30 per dish, I expect a large part of that premium to go towards considerate and well-tested recipe design, and that is just not the impression I got from anything at Epilogue (save for the pickled egg -- that thing is incredible). My final recommendation is to come once for drinks and a pickled egg, try a dish you think sounds good, and if you don't like that dish, don't bother coming back. If you DO like that dish, congratulations, you've found a wonderfully consistent and community-forward place to support for your fine dining needs. read more

Between the lighting and the Halloween decorations, the restaurant didn't look like much on the way in, but our large-ish party was cosily seated without feeling crowded. Our Hawaiian-shirt wearing waiter was friendly and efficient. It wasn't terribly late, but some things were sold out. I had the Root and Trees Salad and the Reading Terminal Market - a sandwich of roasted vegetables. The salad was OK, but the sandwich was a disaster. The veggies were drenched with so much balsamic vinegar that the bread was soaked through. I stained my clothes trying to eat the sandwich the way it came, wrapped in wax paper. After dropping wet bits onto my shirt, my lap, and the floor, I gave up, disassembled the sandwich on my plate, abandoned the squelchy bread, and forked up the filling. Still hungry, I ordered dessert (Strawberry's GF Lemon Cake). Mistake. After all the vinegar, the cake tasted blah, the topping overly sweet. I really wanted to like Epilogue. Maybe I would have, if I'd asked for some of the "everybody eats" soup instead of trying to fill up on dessert. read more

Very nice people that work there, very relaxing. The food was good. It's a little pricey, but it's high-quality food.

Went here last night about an hour before they were slated to close and was seated and served by two very nice young men. We ordered the Crabby Fries which were awesome and then I had the Smashburger which is how a hamburger should always taste. It's very, very yummy!! My friend (who is 73 years old) was not willing to order something that didn't come in a paper sack but I managed to get her to eat some Crabby Fries and half my burger which she absolutely loved. Love, love this place and will be coming back next time I'm in Salem visiting my daughter. read more
