I am disappointed that I am unable to sign up for and attend classes because of overbooking. If I could book the classes a week in advance, I would, but you are not permitted to. You can only sign up the day before and it fills up so quickly! With all the money you spend at a place like this there should be a better system or they shouldn't overbook. By yesterday afternoon, every single Saturday class was full and most of them, even the waitlist was full. Half the reason I signed up for this gym is because of the classes and I keep getting locked out of my favorite ones! Open the sign up a week before! why not? if you are worried about cancellations you could have people confirm. I don't think I will be renewing because of this. I like the barre classes, yoga and spin. If I signed up for monthly yoga works classes, soul cycle AND purebarre (all in the area) it'd still be cheaper than my monthly. I actually like the Equinox facility and staff a lot but if I can't go to my classes it's not worth it. It's a shame read more

I'll try not to repeat anything in my review. The location is killer: next to so many subway options. The facilities are really a step above any gym I've ever been a part of... and I suppose that what you are paying for in the end. The staff is friendly and the sales people are not pushy at all. Regarding price, I was able to get a discount through an organization that I'm a part of: making the cost about $1,300 for the year with no initiation fee. Ouch. However, you should all check with your medical plan (if you are lucky enough to have one) as many offer gym reimbursements of a few hundred dollars a year. There are never fees for classes. Individual showers, day locker rooms where you bring your own lock, Kiehl's products, free shavers. Negatives: not enough drinking fountains, machines do not have individual TV's (like the local YMCA) but rather choice of listening to group TV's, no pool, space is a little tight, no jacuzzi, classes get a bit crammed. read more

This location is well-maintained, clean and not overly crowded. I'm especially impressed by the thoroughness of the cleaning staff- they are diligent in cleaning every corner and it definitely shows! Ive enjoyed the barre and yoga group fitness classes (never tried others) and found the schedule to be super convenient. I genuinely enjoyed the time spent working out here. I didn't plan to review the gym, but feel inclined to thank Alex for his help today in dealing with a membership issue. It's easy for companies to hide behind "strict policies" at the expense of customer service, but this club's management (Alex particularly) displayed a customer-centric and flexible approach to resolution. read more

Now, the price tag is a bit hefty in comparison to other gyms, but this is a gym where people come to work out, and if they spectate they do so very tactfully... this place is CLEAN, and they're constantly cleaning and cleaning and cleaning. Plentiful CLEAN towels in an ample CLEAN locker room and lots of CLEAN cardio equipment to use and lots of CLEAN weight equipment. The staff is friendly and helpful, never condescending, and you don't have to worry about That Trainer giving you the Eyeball while you're bouncing around on the elliptical. Lots of TV's tuned to every different type of channel so you can catch up on your CNN or VH1 or E!... And it smells nice, too. The juice bar is a nice stop off on your way home, and the smoothies are always quite good. Nice selection for a quick something-something after your workout that won't make you feel like you just cancelled it out. If cleanliness is next to godliness then this place approaches divinity. Yes yes yes yes, yes. Is Equinox expensive? Of course it is. But do I sacrifice other expenses and indulgences so that I can keep my membership? Yes, I sure as heck do. I've been a regular at several Equinox locations, depending on where I'm living and working in NYC. Gotta say, the Brooklyn Heights location is the best I've ever been to -- lucky to live close enough to go there for my regular workouts now. The gym is spacious, with roomy locker rooms and three entire floors devoted to weight and cardio equipment. Much of the equipment is quite new, and all of it is very well-maintained. I've never seen an "Out of Order" sign on any of the machines here. Added bonus: The gym has so much equipment that I've also never had a hard time snagging the machine of my choice for an extended period (45 minutes +), regardless of the time of day. I attend yoga classes here on a weekly basis, and have been really impressed. In particular, I *love* Jen's classes. A mix of relaxing self-reflection and tough, sweaty poses. Look forward to trying some cardio and strength classes as well. Most important point: The clientele at some Equinox locations I've tried have been, shall we say, a little stuck-up. For whatever reason, I've found the folks at this Equinox to be much more friendly...No, they don't come up to spontaneously chat with me when I'm sweating it out on the treadmill (thank god!) but women in the locker room are friendly and chatty, and people seem much more low-key. Looking for a spotter on your last set? Good luck, because theres no floor staff working. Looking for the weighted dip belt? You wont find it. Its locked up in a closet but theres no one to help you retrieve it. In fact, last time I stopped in there wasn't even someone staffing the front desk... lets not forget the used towels littering the floor and equipment with no one on cleaning duty and the reduced open hours... read more

The classes are so good... the instructors are there to make you sweat and once you get going and burn up those calories, you get to relax in the eucalyptus steam room and use their immaculate bathroom/spa-like amenities. This equinox is a great gym, that's large clean and has a lot of amenities. I've never not gotten a cardio machine when I needed one and usually attend during "peak hours" 5:30-6:15. Their stretching areas aren't very large and I find often you're crowded during busy times. Their locker rooms while nice and spacious doesn't have lockers with locks in them. I know this seems petty but for equinox and it's "luxury gym" brand name, can't you spring for the nice lockers? All the teachers are very well versed in proper form and encourage you to reach outside your comfort zone. I really love the yoga teachers but wish there were more classes outside the lulu lemon stay at home mom time of mid day. All the staff is super friendly and nice, and honestly if the lockers had locks it would be a 5. read more

Back in 2012 I treated myself to an Equinox membership and I am so happy I did. The classes are spectacular. The instructors are positive, fit, and create super challenging workouts that keep the mind engaged and the body challenged. It's the perfect environment to build a strong body. Equinox is the ultimate self care/mental health investment. The staff is fantastic. From the front desk and cleaning staff to the independently run Green Power Cafe downstairs, each individual takes pride in their job. Everyone is friendly, positive and able to solve problems that may arise with professionalism and kindness. The Food at the downstairs cafe is perfect for pre or post workout nourishment. I go to the 7am classes, and everyone is super focused and mindful of others. The locker rooms can get a bit crowded in the Mornings, but it's mostly the same people so everyone gives one another space to get ready for the day. And, since the Dumbo location has opened, there is much more space in the locker rooms. There is a full spa which is fantastic, separate yoga studio, barre classes, pilates machines, weights, treadmills, separate yoga studio, and new cardio machines. They offer their own Equifit body analysis assessment and pilates session once a year to members for free. And a steam room and cool eucalyptus scented towels!! I train 6 days a week and absolutely love this gym. I highly recommend, it's worth every penny. read more

I was a member here five years ago, then switched jobs and switched gyms four years ago. They email me once a month asking me to rejoin, and I have sent at least TEN emails over 2 years telling them to remove me from the list, including CC'ing the general manager onto the email. It is ridiculous. I have now been employed in Brooklyn Heights again for the past year and I will never go back to this location. Solid location, clean, friendly staff. This review is more about my workouts with the personal trainer Trevoree Dockery. I never thought myself a candidate for personal training, nor would I think I'd even need it. Over several weeks, I had wonderful conversations with Trevoree to get to know him as a person and through these conversations and mini-workout sessions, we found that there were a lot of gaps in my lifting/conditioning that I had let build up over time. Over a short amount of time I have rebuilt myself and would recommend Trevoree as a personal trainer, life coach, and an all around great friend! read more

I debated switching from my old gym for a long time. I can honestly say finally making the switch was one of my best decisions of 2011. This gym is perfection and I love to come here. There is tons of equipment, all of which is in excellent condition. I never have to venture far to find exactly what I am looking for. There are matted spaces on each floor for floor exercises and stretching out. The classes are varied, challenging offered at great times in beautiful studios with instructors that are motivating and fun. I'm gushing, I know. The locker rooms feel like a spa. They are incredibly clean, well stocked with fresh towels (big, soft towels), each locker has two hangers in it, the showers are tiled with real doors and the dispensers of wonderful Keihl's products are always full. Did I mention there is shaving cream and new disposable razors available? The hair dryers are also powerful and have the concentrator attachment for a great blow out. If you work out regularly I highly recommend this gym. read more

Clean, spacious, friendly. Expensive, but not terribly so. I've heard of other people having problems leaving, hopefully they will fix that. Also, bring back the mini-towel! Why are there always 150 big towels and 0 mini-towels? Did not like the spa, went there for waxing, but it was very expensive and the girl did not know what she was doing (ow ow ow, not supposed to hurt that much!). While she was chatting she revealed that corporate policy requires all aestheticians to use the same corporate-approved products. It's also a bit noisy in there, not insulated well from the rest of the gym. While I appreciate never having to wait for a machine, it's hard to walk out from behind the rows of them. There are no "isles" which permit you to exit your row of equipment, so you have to snake around the entire floor to use the water fountain. Seriously, one foot of room to permit your almost-exclusively slender clientèle to flee in case of an emergency is not too much to ask. Yoga room is really nice. Abundance of classes justify the somewhat higher cost of membership, if you use them. There is some kind of daycare thing on the main level. I don't have kids, so I can't rate that. There's also a sports store and a juice bar. read more

I was a member of Equinox about 2 years ago, took a break then decided to come back. Here's what I like: CLEAN facilities. Now, I'm not one that walks around locker rooms with my shoes off, but if I absolutely left my shower shoes, I'd live if I had to put my bare feet on the floor. AMAZING class selection. Love taking fitness classes; hate working out alone. Spinning, Kettle Bell, Stacked, Barre Burn are all top notch and if you take say 3 classes a week, for the cost of membership it averages out to a little less than one of those boutique studios in the city (or Brooklyn since those are popping up everywhere). I HATE: the upsell to do personal training. Yea, I fell for it this time and don't get me wrong, my trainer is great but it's too damn expensive. PERIOD. To go along with prices, the membership fee is too damn expensive. I get it; it's clean, I have access to Kiehl's products, but like.... my corporate membership (which includes a slight discount... I think) is more expensive than most normal membership fees at gyms. read more

Equinox is unequivocally the nicest and well put together gym I've ever been to. Best decision I ever made. Let's start with the fact that they use Kiehls everything in the locker rooms. The front desk staff is welcoming and knowledgable. And the facility itself is in pristine condition. Eugene Kelly set my up membership as well as made specific recommendations for my goals. And guess what? I'm seeing results thanks to his suggestions. I am so impressed with this gym. The sign up process was a breeze and he was super laid back funny and not at all pushy. The barre burn and Yoga classes are my absolute favorite. I am so grateful for the instructors expertise, energy, and level of professionalism especially now that I no longer have to fork over $30+ a class to private studios. So my business partner Peter and his wife are both members of this gym; when I'm here in Brooklyn Heights for work, I like to get away and bust stress with exercise. Thanks to Zach, Peter's sales rep, I was able to get a good deal that's allowed me to hit spin class three times this week. (Zach is also a really nice guy and always has a big smile for me and remembers my name... little things like that make me feel good :-) And of course, gym itself is lovely-- I really appreciate the comp towels (especially since I usually forget to bring one to the gym), the water fountains have filtered water (I even bring my empty sports bottle and fill it here before class, since the water tastes better than the tap water at my business partner's house-- sorry Peter) and the spin class taught by Cathy is totally terrific. I would love it if there was a pool and jacuzzi but it's not a huge deal. The machines are all in great shape and the facility is clean as a whistle (even the men's locker room, and everyone knows men are pigs and typically men's locker rooms at other gyms are capital-G GROSS)... what can I say; I'm a fan. read more

Disappointing location, small and overcrowded, not worth the $200 - $450 per month fee. Poor selection of old equipment, classes will cost you $110 ea. and up, where most clubs will provide free classes. A ridiculous amount of instructors will crowd all floors at most times. Do the math, 2 classes per week and the lowest tier membership will cost you $1,000.oo per month to be in a small crowded gym fitted with old equipment. read more

Oh man, how I miss my Equinox membership. It's one of the things I miss most about living in Brooklyn Heights, but now that I moved it's just too inconvenient to trek all the way over here. While it is not a huge space, Equinox has a smart layout so that it's almost never too crowded. I also got into classes for the first time in my life, with Prince's Shockwave (and formerly his boot camp) really standing out. Prince is the man. Friendly community, especially the pre-work crowd, and a nice mix of people of all ages (although probably on average a much older crowd than you'd find in say, SoHo). Why oh why can't they open a new club in Park Slope/Boerum Hill?? read more

I belonged to NYSC for about 10 years. I was fed up with their constant broken equipment, dirty floors, small towels that closer resemble sandpaper and their dirty and smelly locker rooms. So I joined Equinox. The price is 2X what I was paying for the all access at NYSC but it's worth every dime. Equinox is clean, it smells like a spa, not a gym. Equipment works and if it's broken it's fixed very quickly. The products in the locker room are great. The people are friendlier and the staff is helpful. People are courteous and put equipment back, things are where they are supposed to be and are generally very clean. Send me a message if you are planning to join. I'm so in love with this Gym. Its Cleanliness and Courteous Staffs really make you feel at home. I'm still on my Monthly Guest Pass and as soon as it is over, I will jumply start with my Regular Membership. In addition, their bathrooms , Locker Rooms, and Brand New Equipments have been Rated 5 Stars. There's always a Staff Member who's Constantly Cleaning, Cleaning, and Cleaning which makes the Environment one of the safest Place and Atmosphere to be; even if you have an unwrapped candy fallen on the floor, you wouldn't be hesitated to pick it up and put it back in your mouth. I'm only a member and I would encourage everybody else to become part of this Great team! Finally, their membership is a bit Higher than most Gyms, but it really worth it. Beautiful and clean gym. Great front desk staff. But wtf is up with the trainers??? First of all, is there a mandate that they aren't allowed to smile EVER? Why are they so angry? I mean monthly fees are upwards of 200 dollars and they can't say hi or be nice to the general members? I'm so sorry that we aren't paying 500 a session to work out with you but at least make us feel welcome and comfortable at this expensive gym. Also no offense, I have only been working out for 2 months but how do I look light years ahead of being more fit than some of the trainers. Some of the trainers weigh 100 pounds and don't have a single ounce of muscle. Who is paying these people to train them??? SMH. Also, can the trainers please not take up the entire gym and every squat rack? Kinda unfair to all of the other members. That is all - just wish the trainers made us regular members feel more welcome. read more

Updated review: I liked the gym but I didn't want to extend my membership because I am traveling for work for the next few months. It was like pulling teeth to get a straight answer out of anyone. No one would return my calls or pick up, just respond to my emails. When I was a member no problem talking to people. I was hesitant to spend more $$$ on a gym but I am pretty happy. It is a bit more reasonable than the other locations. It is a bit small, but I use it on off peak hours as my office is a block away. Good steam room that is much cleaner than others I have used. Specifically Mike Obertlik, the general manager, was very responsive if I had any questions or needed some assistance. I am very appreciative of that. Cons - They should have a lounge where you can just sit if needed or a better computer area. Other locations have better layouts. Pros - Clean, many floors, everyone is friendly, steam room, good vibe. read more

I was only a member for about seven months but had a great experience. When I went after work (7:30 p.m.) on weekdays and during the afternoon on weekends, there were always weights and machines available. The lockers were very clean, and the showers were nice. The entire gym has a very luxurious feel to it. The music is at a reasonable level. The trainers don't force themselves on you. (I was approached maybe 2-3 times in my 50 or so visits.) Oh, and the WiFi reliably works. I never went to classes, so I can't say anything about those. The only gripe I can think of was some of the machine accessories weren't always at 100%. When I moved away, I didn't have any trouble ending my membership through my company. They even signed my healthcare reimbursement form (thanks to Austin Taylor) after I was no longer a member without any trouble. read more

The classes are nice and most of the instructors are good- although I had one unbearable instructor for Barre Burn. But great spin instructors. I've been training with Moshi for over a year and have gotten great results. This club is great.

First, the positives: this is a beautiful gym, the classes and equipment are good, and the location is convenient. Another "plus," if you have kids, is that they offer baby-sitting services (at select times)...which definitely makes it easier to work out on weekends etc. Unfortunately, there are some serious drawbacks. For starters, the ventilation in this place is TERRIBLE. Not such a big deal in the winter, but in the spring and summer, it becomes downright difficult to breathe. Seems like even just installing a few fans in the cardio areas would improve the air situation drastically, but management has been completely unresponsive to my many requests to address the ventilation problem. Second, security is terrible. My locker got broken into, cash and credit cards stolen...total nightmare. Third, they seem to have trouble opening on time. I usually go to the gym before work on weekdays, and in fact part of why I joined Equinox in the first place is that they open at 5:30 a.m. But I can't tell you how many mornings I've waited around for half an hour or more (!!!) for a staff member to unlock the doors. So why am I still a member? Because it's really the only gym of this caliber in Brooklyn Heights/Dumbo. However, I find it truly irritating that the management is so consistently unresponsive to ALL of the complaints listed above, so as soon as an alternative opens up in the neighborhood, I'm bailing on Equinox. read more

Great club, awesome location, nice equipment. All good things, except they will not let you quit. I moved to a new neighborhood. My building has a gym, and it would have been completely out of my way to go to Equinox. The manager said I have to move over 25 miles away to quit and even if I could quit, it would take 45 days to process. NYSC (not as nice, or as clean) let me quit in 24 hours (even when I was under contract). So although I loved working out here, I will never join again. A shame really, but for me customer service is at the core of a company, and Equinox failed. read more

Worst of all Equinox clubs in New York. Oversubscribed, with anecdotal evidence that free memberships have been handed out by trainers to friends, adding to the overcrowding. Trainers and some staff act in an aggressive, sometimes mildly threatening manner, as if they want to start a fight with customers. Some of the customers do, however, warrant such treatment. High meathead quotient of grunters, groaners, and worst of all barbell slammers seeking to impress women with their prowess by making noise and looking constipated makes this look more like a Gold's gym in New Jersey. Lockerooms, lockers tiny, too few. Cleaning staff as unpleasant as the trainers. Manhattan branches are at a level that comes closer to justifying the insane cost. This one does not, and management is clearly aware of the problems and has chosen to do nothing. Time to contact hq. read more

I'd advise not to get involved with this gym. It's so crowded at certain times of the year that you can't even really get into the locker room. The class capacity is at least 10 people too high, you don't even have full range of motion in some of the classes. I stopped using it because it was just the opposite of what you need after a long work day. Their cancellation policy is 45 days notice - even though they raise their prices giving customers only 30 days notice. In fact, my advice would be to stay away from this company altogether. read more

I have a Global Membership with Equinox and can compare the service in all of their gyms in the New York area. Normally, if you don't need anything from this specific gym location then it's not a problem. However, if you do, hopefully you will not have to interact with people such as, Jessica K. their General Manager. Jessica needs classes in general management and while she's at it, it wouldn't hurt to take classes in customer service. I promise she wouldn't lose her money. Anything is better then the way she currently deals with clients. I am still a member of Equinox, at least I have the choice to not continue to go to this specific location. If this were not the case for me, I would have dropped my membership then and there. read more

This is a great gym! The layout really cool and unlike any other gym in the area. They have all the equipment you'd ever need, most of which appears relatively new. If anything breaks its fixed within a couple of days. The showers are fully stocked with towels and Kiehl's products. The Staff is very helpful and the other amenities are a plus! read more

I'm not going to lie... I'm pretty obsessed with this place. I lost 20lbs+ pre-Equinox (lots of running) and now finally 30lbs! I definitely needed a kick to get the last few lbs off. I had a 3 day guest pass when I came here, which I activated online. I had gotten it from a coffee shop in the financial district. The next day a membership person called to schedule a time that I could come in and meet with her. I knew that for the right price that I would probably join. However, I knew it was ridiculously expensive. Pre-new year's, Equinox waived their $150 initiation fee for a few days (for their single club option...I believe their all access pass was reduced by half?). I kept that in mind when I went to see the membership person and I did mention that I was still a member at a competing gym that I had just decided to cancel (literally a week before). Once she showed me all of the things that would come with my membership (a free month since I had switched gyms, no initiation fee, complimentary pilates session, complimentary fitness assessment and training sessions, plus all of their classes and discounts at their spa). I had to sign up! So I did! Yes, it is pricey ($151 per month) but completely worth it. I got really bored of all the classes at my old gym very quickly but I couldn't cancel because of my contract. I do a lot of classes so I love that there are so many challenging classes to choose from. I like that instructors will cater classes to everyone so they'll offer more advanced moves to experienced people in classes. Some of my favorite classes: kettlebell workout, the monster cycle (cycling with a killer playlist and a video screen), 30/60/90 (a high intensity interval workout...think bootcamp...which they also offer, I just haven't gone yet), whipped (love this class because of all the different stations with kettleballs, ropes and the different moves), terracycle (terrain indoor cycling), cyclesanity, ripped arms & abs, lower body conditioning, diezel warriors (a p90x type class), booty blast, barre burn, and of course, their yoga classes. I still have so many other classes to try! The complimentary pilates session is awesome since it's one on one and you get to use all of the pilates equipment like the reformer. I really enjoyed the personal training session and fitness assessment. At my old gym, they offered these two but in one hour session. The fitness assessment only took me 45 minutes to get through but it was very thorough especially with the the different exercises that I did so it wasn't just body fat and weight measurements. i loved that the trainer also geared the training session to my strengths and weaknesses (sadly because I have lots of upper body strength, that meant lots and lots of tough arm workouts which I still do because they work!). It gets busy here but I'm only around in the evenings and weekends but some mornings. I've never had to wait for a shower (love the Kiehl's products in the shower! especially the conditioner) though sometimes I feel like there isn't enough lockers. Also monday evenings seem to be packed more so than the rest of the work week. Obviously, the space is gorgeous, all 4 floors of it (5 if you count where the smoothie bar is on the ground floor?). Lastly, I FREAKING LOVE the Myeq phone app and the website. Basically it tracks when you sign in at the gym and what classes you've taken. Plus you can add classes and workouts to the calendar on Myeq and sync it to your google or outlook calendars! And you can book your cycling classes on your phone or computer (reservations open up 26 hrs before class but they save just a few bikes if you want to sign up at the club 30 mins before the class). I definitely recommend Equinox if you're big into fitness classes and working out! read more
