I have been coming here for years. I have known about it Ernies my whole life since I grew up in the neighborhood. I saw someone post about the vibe, I have been to the trendy barbers in downtown and Silverlake with wanna be trendy people. Ernies is a nice barbershop, in one of those areas of Glendale that blend with EagleRock. Was happy to find them available on Sunday, before the Scheduled State close down. I parked in front on the 30 minute green curb. I forgot to inquire if there is parking behind the shop, street parking should be easy enough. They are adhering to all Covid 19 safety measures. Greg cut my hair and did a great job. I referred a friend there once I got home, he too was pleased with his experience there yesterday. Their rates are very reasonable, it's a tough business, like so many during this pandemic. Money is tight, yes, but tip these folks well for their good work. read more

He's gone now but I stayed on with the new generation now operating the shop. The vibe is friendly and casual and the barbers are youthful but experienced. (Haircut 2/12/12 SU): There's something comforting about an old-fashion barber shop (barber light pole both inside and outside, too!) that puts me back in more seemingly simpler times. Nostalgia is always nice just to get away from reality, and in this case you get groomed, too. I've been coming to Ernie's Barber Shop since I was in junior high having lived in the area my entire life. Sure, I've bounced around here and there, but I've always returned to this place that is home to me. It's like that old worn pair of jeans that is now tattered and torn, ripped at the bottom cuffs, and is lighter in color than whence it was first purchased. You still have half of the original cast - Ernie, the owner and patriarchal figure, and Mark, who happens to be my barber these days. Other relatively new additions include Tom and Zach (Ernie's grandson). As any good barber shop, you come not only for the haircut which I only do ($17.00), but it's the conversation and the camaraderie; it's therapy while getting your locks chopped off. Or in my case, getting sheared to the skin! They also offer services such as shampooing, shaving, and the throwback flattop. Each barber is professional in their craft and has his own style of doing things. I've had Ernie cut my hair on occasion when Mark (or when I first started coming here, Russ) isn't around. His deftly skills with the buzzer and clippers are evident and would certainly challenge the likes of Edward Scissorhands or Sweeney Todd, but less maniacal and menacing. Before you know it, you're done and Ernie is handing you the mirror to give his work a look-over. With Mark, he is just as skilled but more methodical and the conversation is always a treat. Not as quick as Ernie, but more meticulous. I've never seen a woman get her hair done here, even when the lone female, Yolanda, had her own chair for several years. But the place is definitely children-friendly as each barber can either act as the great uncle or grandfather role. The customer service is exceptional. Plus, if your child behaves and doesn't cry while get his/her haircut, they may get a piece of candy or a gumball! Does anyone remember those days!? Or better yet, ask Ernie to perform a magic trick! They are open six days a week (closed on Saturday), and each barber will take appointments except on Sundays when it is walk-in only. FYI...Mark's day off is Fridays. They recently installed a wide flatscreen TV that now covers the serene tropical image patrons would gaze at while sitting in the chair. If it's tennis season, expect that to be on as Ernie is a huge fan. Otherwise, expect whatever sport to be playing depending on the time of year. And for those cold days, there is an old stove-like wood-burning contraption that warms the place up so quickly. Parking is not plentiful. Ernie's Barber Shop doesn't have their own parking lot. There is street parking in front of the shop on Chevy Chase Dr., around the corner on Glenoaks Blvd., or the street behind the shop (name escapes me) and you can cut through the Glendale Adventist Hospital parking lot. Overall, I dare say my review is completely one-sided and not objective. Outside of going to Supercuts for several years before coming here, I have no other haircutting experience elsewhere. What I do know is customer service and a job well done, and you find both of those here. I feel each city or town is at its best when you can see how it is tied to neighborhoods, and Ernie's (among other local establishments) will always be synonymous with the Glenoaks/Scholl Canyon area. I have no perspective what the going rate of a haircut is these days, but I know some friends who go to "stylists" and pay twice as much or more for something I see these barbers do. With that being said, I see absolute value as noted by the price I quoted above (total bill was $17 before tip), but it's a half-hour of good grooming and conversation. As you can imagine, the place is casual; Ernie enjoys the aloha shirts. They only accept cash or check, so they don't take my credit card of choice...AMEX! read more

The barber that Ive been going to for years retired and closed his shop, so I had to find another place to go to. There are three on the main street where I live. I went into each one, and finally settled on the last one. In each of these, the people spoke little to no English, and one looked like it was run by gang members. The one I settled on did an alright job, but the experience was horrible. There was a young boy getting his hair cut and he was screaming the entire time, and no one would do anything about it. After that experience, the search was on again. I looked at all the places on the east side on Yelp, and everything was either what appeared to be some sort of gang hangout, non English speaking, or posh and trying to sell you a lifestyle, not a haircut. I found Ernie's, and it looked like it might be a winner, so I gave it a shot. Yes! Ernie knows how to run a barber shop, and it has been family owned and operated since 1955! I got a cut by his grandson Zach, and with minimal direction he was able to get my haircut done the way I wanted. The atmosphere was calm and familiar, and it seems like they have a good relationship with their clients, since they knew everyone that came in on a personal level. No blaring music or TV, no graffiti art or hip lifestyle decor, just an old fashioned barber shop, and it is perfect! Ernie and Zach, you've got yourself another regular! read more

I found Ernie's Barbershop through these Yelp reviews and I'm so glad I was steered there. Zach has been my barber for over two years, and can do both old school and new school cuts. Having moved from NYC, I was skeptical anyone in Glendale could pull off a Taper/Fade/Ceaser with a clean Line-up (Shape-up for East Coasters), but he absolutely crushed it! Zach's the younger fella at the first chair when you walk in, and makes you feel right at home at Ernie's. I recommend making an appointment, but wait times aren't too bad either. read more

I've been going her for about a year. Good normal barber cuts, they listen and interpret conservatively. They cut fairly quickly, but never sloppy. Quick enough that you can usually park on the green curb. I've rarely had to wait for a haircut. Great place for banter with the fellas, or just get a cut in silence, nobody judges you. read more

I am visiting from out of town and was not familiar with the area so I went to google close barber shops near my brothers house and this place came up. If you want someone to ruin your freaking hair go ahead and go there. Ernie have no business cutting hair, what he needs to do is retire, hire young barbers to replace him and get a percentage that way he gets to keep the shop open and does not risk getting horrible reviews. I think its a dis service to anyone who pays $17.00 and get their darn hair all messed up. I am sure he was good back in the days but he is truly past over his prime.imo I am on vacation here and I didn't want to get into confrontation with anyone because honestly I did not want to pay him but I did the right thing and walked away with both sides of my hair including the back sides were crooked. I was visiting from out of town to attend a wedding, and needed an intervention (my previous haircut wasn't great). So, I found this place through yelp. I called and they told me to come by. The barber who cut my hair was the grandson of the legendary Ernie. Here is a quick +/- of the experience: - the place is cool, I am personally very attracted to old school barber shops - the haircut was overall good with the exception that he did not ask how i wanted my sideburns and ended up cutting it short, spoiling what would have a good haircut - I asked for a shave - I wasn't specific that I wanted a straight razor shave - so he just ran the electric shaver thru my face. The overall theme to me was along the lines that he just assumed stuff and instead of clarifying - or offering alternatives, he just went with his own assumptions. I'd have given a place a 4 o 5 if it wasn't for these two issues. read more

Ernie's is a barber shop. It is owned and run by men. They cut men's hair. If you're too sensitive to handle a real barber shop, go cry somewhere else. These guys are all good guys. Ernie is 90 yrs old and built the place many years ago. He's got awesome stories and has earned his place in the world. He is far more courteous than he needs to be to the salon crowd. The only bad people here are the occasional customers, bragging about the money they made ripping off others. Glendale needs less of those losers and more people like the guys at Ernie's. read more

So my boyfriend and I drive by this place all the time on our way to school, and I suggested that he go try this place out since his last haircut with his usual guy seemed a little choppy. We were warmly greeted by the owner and the other fellas at the shop and as a woman coming into the manliest of man locations, it was a lot of fun just talking to everyone there. (I didn't feel like I was going to the mechanic shop and just staring at the ceiling.) They took their time and gave my boyfriend a really nice haircut. I am personally EXTREMELY detailed oriented, and I can tell that they are too. They stepped back and examined the haircut very carefully before going back at it. I respect that. I hate encountering those folks (in any profession at this point) who think they're bad asses and are completely arrogant and give you something you completely hate--oh, but they're the expert!...ya no, not here, they respect what you want and are humble about it (& they're still experts). My boyfriend doesn't have a yelp account but he really liked the cut and noticed the detailing they get into that his other guy never did. Hearing him say that made me super happy! Just as a note, 1) There is no woman who works there (anymore I guess). It's just the guys and they're super nice & friendly. & 2).....they do magic tricks. Zach, Ernies grandson, provides a current cut and fade while keeping the old school barber feel Ernie established. Yelp reviews on this place were spot on. Ernie and Zach have a quality establishment here. I like to stay local and there are a ton of barbers in the Eagle Rock/Glendale area, but I liked the idea of a Grandpa/Grandson combo. Zach did a great job on my haircut and beard trim, and was able to give me some advice for when I'm trimming my beard myself. It cost a little more than the barber shops I've been to, but not expensive. Probably more on par with the chain places, but definitely worth it and I'd recommend this place over anything else. And I must say, damn I look good right now. Can't wait to take my girlfriend out tonight! read more

I decided to try this place out recently since they're local and I'd rather support my local businesses. My expectations were high given that their Yelp reviews are pretty darn good. They still managed to exceed my expectations with not only a phenomenal cut but a show to top it off with. Zack gave me a quick and perfect cut, exactly as I described to him what I wanted done. Through the cut we carried a good conversation and at no point did I sit there bored waiting for it to be over. And on top of all, he introduced me to his grandfather Ernie, the shop's original owner. Ernie told me about the history of his barber shop and proceeded to entertain everyone with some awesome magic! Dinner and a show is one thing, but a haircut and a show?
