First time in Patterson... my hubby and i stopped here after picking apricots nearby. Got the carne asada plate and my hubby got cheese enchiladas. Great price for a lot of food! We both left stuffed and happy. The lady at the service counter was polite and took our order quickly - and the food arrived in a timely fashion. I am not Latino but I felt some kinda of way because the Latino gentleman before me ask for jalapeño peppers, she gave him two cups at no charge. Located on the outer part of the downtown area is what most consider to be the best Mexican food Patterson has to offer. Ernies is definitely one of the oldest restaurants in town. This place is the true definition to a hole in the wall. It's not too big and might not have the best curb appeal, but inside is unique in its own little way. The service has always been great and usually pretty busy. The best quality about Ernies is what we all come for... it's the food. The breakfast burrito w/chorizo, potato and egg is great anytime of the day. The Super Burrito, either with or without meat never disappoints. But it's the Super Nachos, which comes with the perfect amount of cheese the top item on the menu for me. They are open during COVID for delivery, takeout or curbside pickup only. Recently went in bad service‼ bad service‼bad service never ate there before came in from out of town. It was close to closing time I believe about 25 minutes. I was glad walked in. I seen two gentlemen, talking with the person taking The order Even the cook, lean forward and looked out and seen me walk in got in line. They were there continue talking plus the cook for about 15-20 minutes. I believe they knew them for that person goes in all the time due to the conversation The cook finish. Their food, came out and gave the bag to the people. It was my turn walked up little relieved because it was taking a long time I said hello I would like to get a wet burrito with Chile Verde The girl looked at me. They look at the cook, and the cook stand there basically with his hands on the side very upset and irritated later finding out he might've been the owner so she looked at him, looked at me. Ask him a question in Spanish. poor lady, looked at me with a very sorry look. And said that they are close that they just closed. I was in disbelief they must've seen my look on my face and the cook said well if he wants a quesadilla that they could do only I asked what time do you guys close because the sign said a certain time I arrive close to 25 minutes before that time I stand in line for about 15 to 20 minutes while you seen me talking and basically ignoring me so the little cook guy Was saying something in Spanish to her low And looked at me a few times don't get me wrong. Working in Patterson for a couple of weeks and I asked a local resident where I could find some good Mexican food. Without hesitation she recommended Ernie's, saying it was the best in the area. She also mentioned that it was so good that she had Ernie's cater her daughter's wedding. That seemed like a good recommendation so I headed to Ernie's for dinner. This was described to me as authentic Mexican so I wasn't really expecting to find any vegetarian options but there were several on the menu. I ordered a veggie burrito and a cheese enchilada, Both were really good! The burrito was huge, and overstuffed with rice, beans, chilis and cheese. Spicy hot! When I had ordered the server asked if I liked chilies, as they were hot, I said yes and was not disappointed. Hot with good flavor, but if you don't care for spicy hot you might want to omit them. Service was very fast, I had my "to go" order within five minutes. Ernie's seems to do a huge phone in/carry out business and they were filling the orders very quickly. In a tiny town off of the I-5 in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE is a town called Patterson, CA. In the middle of said town is a tiny Mexican restaurant called Ernie's Taqueria. I'm really judgemental when it comes to my Mexifoods, so when I saw people coming in and out of this place in droves, I knew something was up. My wife went in to order our food- 4 breakfast burritos and a machaca burrito for myself. When she returned, it smelled GLORIOUS!!! The medium salsa was really good. Fresh, chunky, and went on evenly. The hot one was a bit off. It smelled burnt. We didn't finish that one. My wife also pointed out a guy leaving with 4 large cups. She asked "you know what that is?" I said "menudo". She said "yep. Go get some. You know you want it." I remembered it was Saturday so hell yes! If you're not in the know, menudo is strictly a weekend thing in Mexican restaurants/households. I went in. It was just as I thought it would be- small. There were about 10 tables inside and a tortilla lady pressing and making fresh tortillas in the waiting area. There were 4 workers in the back cranking out the food and it was amazing! When I paid for my menudo ($7.99), the tortilla lady gave me some and I was on my way. The menudo was a little greasy than I was used to, but the tripe was clean. If possible I would have put no star. I am a traveling food critic and I was told by a few people. To stop by Ernie's. I have been surprised many times before with holes in the wall. Was looking forward to this surprise again. Arrive there at 8 p.m. on Monday there was three gentlemen in front of me placing an order there was one gentleman sitting at a table on the right hand side waiting for their order and a woman on the seating provided up against the door I believe waiting for their food so I get in line behind the three gentlemen ready to place an order just then another gentleman comes in right behind me in line then I seen the lady speaking to a younger lady in Spanish so I believe the older lady doesn't speak English she was relying a message to her to tell me. At which time only thing she said was we are closed I was like closed I looked back at the kitchen it was fully functional food was still being cooked and I saw the cook's little eyes staring back at me I was very disappointed there was no closed light like every other restaurant. So I said okay with my hands up I look over to the lady sitting down and she was like she couldn't believe it at which time I was going to start backing up to go out the gentleman behind me said you are closed and when I was walking out I hear the younger girl tell the guy that was directly behind me while what do you want is it just one thing and he replied yes a breakfast burrito I was like are you freaking kidding me so I was walking out and the younger girl came out and asked sir but in Spanish 2 x then I turned around and she said were you just going to get one thing by that time I don't think I could have eating eating food my blood was boiling and usually I'm one that lets people know verbally how I feel I said no it's fine she said cuz if it's just one thing we could do it and I just mention to her that should have been the first question you asked when I was in line in front of the person you did ask but yet you chose to say we are closed I don't know if it's because I'm not from that town it seemed like the gentleman behind me what's a regular but I know I don't look like the people from that town but still my money was green just like everybody else's I believe and this is my opinion that they seen me walking up because of my size and my fashion they chose not to service me and that is sad in this day and age like I said this is only what I feel personally and they know that they were wrong and they tried making it good on their half so everybody that I know I will definitely let them know how Ernie's treated me it might not be what everybody gets treated like but all I can do is go off of a personal experience I was always taught never judge a book by its cover and who knows maybe that food was the best in town but for me service is a lot in they caught a F- from someone that eats out different restaurants different cities different states and I do have to say that was the worst experience I had at a restaurant with a waitress and a cook Maybe the owner I will not spend a dime of my hardworking money true a restaurant like that and when someone ask me about restaurants in Patterson California I will let them know exactly how I feel read more
