Israel answered the phone on the first ring, and came within 90 minutes. He explained the problem and how he intended to address it. He wasn't able to return with the needed parts in time to complete the job on that Friday, so he came out Saturday morning to finish the work. He was able to carefully extract the old (VERY old!) shower valve through a smallish hole, and install the new gear, so we didn't have to re-tile any of the shower enclosure. My only quibble is that he wasn't very transparent about how much of his quote was for parts vs the labor, so it was not easy to consider upgrading from a Delta valve to a different make. Overall, I'll definitely call him again when I need a plumber. read more

A frustrating nightmare. Israel came by to inspect our bathtub that seems to have either a pipe leak or a drainage issue. We discovered this issue as we were replacing the caulking to our bath tub. We told him numerous times that we had just removed the caulking. During his "inspection" he started running the water from our shower head but then he proceeded to point the shower head straight on the crevice where there is no longer caulking and say "see this is the issue!" Now there is a ton of water behind our wall in even more places then we had originally. He's a terrible communicator, constantly was interrupting, and couldn't articulate any of his reasons for anything. He was just guessing at what the issues were and hoping we would agree to start opening things up so we'd have to pay him. We were better off not having him show up at all. read more

Having a trustworthy, reliable plumber is 1 of those things you hope you don't need but really appreciate when life happens. We have a problematic clogged kitchen sink where sewer water will come up rapidly in the sink and even though we have a homeowners association, they are worthless for anything. I highly recommend you stay away form this company. It is owned by a guy with the name Israel who is not a licensed plumber himself. It seems he is renting the plumbing license of a guy with the name James. California State Licensing Board allows a licensed contractor to use his/her license for several companies. So, some licensed contractors take advantage of this loophole and "Rent" their license to others under the pretense that they have some ownership in that company, e.g. 10%. State of California should close this troubling loophole. Anyway, this guy pretends he knows how his instruments work. We had a clogged sewer line. After some playing with his instruments, he declared with 100% confidence that the sewer pipe is disconnected about 4 feet under the concrete slab next to the outside wall. He even marked the concrete slab with paint, marking what he claimed was the exact location of the problem area. I have a photo of it. His worker removed a concrete slab and dug down to 6 feet, but there was no sewer line. He then played with his instruments and this time he said the problem area was under another slab in another location which happened to be where the cleanout pipe was coming from. After digging 4 feet, this time the pipes showed up, and he had his worker cut off the pipes. There was no sign of any disconnected pipes. He then said that clog could not be opened and that he had to get paid $2,000. He then wanted to abandon the pipes under the ground and instead reroute the pipes through another area at the cost of another few thousand dollars. At that point, I asked him not to touch anything. I called another plumbing company who managed to remove some roots from the clogged pipe using their snake, in about five minutes. Testing by water showed that the pipe was doing fine. This other plumber charged me $443. I then had Israel come and reconnect the pipes that he had removed and pour the soil in and redo the concrete. They did a terrible job redoing the concrete. In conclusion, this company cost me $2,000 and damage to the property with no use. I repeat my recommendation: Stay away from this company. read more

A few days later, I found the toilet was still leaking and called Erwyn's again. Somebody came out, looked the toilet over, and said I needed a new toilet. So I ordered one from Home Depot and called Val Betti Plumbing to install it. I should have called Val Betti in the first place. The guy from Val Betti told me that a non-Toto flapper had been installed. When he installed the correct one, I no longer needed a new toilet. He showed up about 15 minutes late to the appointment. He did apologize for being late. I made the mistake of suggesting he goes ti a local hardware store instead of Home Depot, but he went on about how the valve was so old and that I would need about $1,000 of work to open up the wall and change the fixtures. He returned with a correct valve and the incorrect handle and then proceeded to argue with me that the part was impossible to find. He did not fix anything, he replaced a part that did not need to be replaced. Instead of getting an apology and admitting he didn't really do anything, I was charged $275 for this nonsense.
