I figured I'd update my review from 2022 because as of now, this location has completely rotated out its predecessor games (Exodus). Toria, our host was friendly and ensured we had a great experience, going above and beyond what I typically see from most gamemasters. The new games are Vampire vs. Witch and Black Hole. I would strongly recommend Vampire vs. Witch with a smaller group and have the roles swapped out afterwards so you can best experience both puzzle tracks. I would say that, for a 15 minute game, Vampire vs. Witch was pretty cool, definitely worth the small price and would work well if you didn't have too much time or wanted a warmup for either Fatal Invitation or Black Hole. For Chinese speakers, there's also the option to switch the language in the room, but when I played the default was English. There's also an integrated hint system which allows you to communicate through a tablet, which doubles as your timer for the room. Despite having some minor technical issues on a follow-up visit with a different gamemaster, we did have a backup walkie so make sure to keep that one close by as well. Overall, I thought that these were fun rooms that, without giving away too much, challenged the norms of typical escape game style puzzles in a way that was refreshing and cleverly entertaining. read more

My friend and I were suddenly wanting to go to an escape the same day. We recognize most places would require appointment and payments ahead of time. However, we came across Escape Duck, and we both happy to hear they accept walk-in! Another criteria I was looking for was a beginner friendly escape room. After chatting with the staff, we decided to do the Sherlock experience. Luckily, that room was still opened even at around 4 pm. We spent the entire hour in there and were close to finishing. Overall, we were both very engaged, but enjoyed the experience. I would come back to try the other rooms in the future. In terms of payment, keep in mind that they do not accept card payment. It was my first time to this spot but my second escape room experience. I was so excited but we were running late on the day of our appointment. Luckily, they weren't that busy and they were able to push our appointment to 11AM from 10:45AM. When we got there, the girl who helped us was so sweet and nice. She explained how it works (specially for those first timers), wished us luck and helped us with hints in a timely manner. It was so much fun. Also, the place looked clean, organized and super cute. Escape Duck Escape Room is located inside an office or retail building within a plaza. There was a single staff who attended to us by providing us clues by using a walkie-talkie and via an iPad. I brought my kids here and tried out the Sherlock Room, but it wasn't all that great. I knew I probably shouldn't have high hopes for an Escape Room in Rowland Heights when usually the fun ones are located in L.A. I was 30 minutes into it and already wanted to leave. I was very bored and was just thinking about what to eat for dinner while letting my kids roam around the room looking for clues. Overall, I think this place is good for locals who doesn't want to drive far but other than that, I don't think I'll be returning for another experience. read more

I want to start off by saying that the place was empty. Meaning my party was the only one there at the time. The staff was not very friendly as they seems like we were disturbing them therefore they rushed all explanation (not that there was any). That being said the level of "medium" difficulty room, was super unorganized there was clues everywhere and very misleading. It did not guide you where after solving one box it would lead to the next. Even with using all the hints and clues WE STILL DIDN'T FINISH and this was our first escape room. Even after being done with the room when the staff came to get us I was asking questions like asking him to walk us through the room as it was super confusing and we were met with a blank stare and a very bland brief explanation. I love how they design the "Masquerade Manor " room. There are so many details on the side, very creative. They are also the first escape room that lets's collect points to gain a prize in the end. It's so much fun to spend time here with a group. We had a total of 6 people solving the mystery in 1 hour. Great place! We did the masquerade manor and it was just two of us. This is the hardest one. We didn't finish. We were 3 locks away!!! For two person we did great I think. Great and friendly staff Huge parking. ~they hide coins and you can collect them and trade it in for a prize at the end! Super cool. Super clean place! This was lots of fun. Did the fatal attraction murder mystery. I was able to use my smarts to guess some glues. We made it to the end just in time. The game makers we nice and even gave us goodie bags on the way out. I've done of few escape rooms at other places and this place is easily top 3. We did the Sherlock room and were pretty disappointed throughout our experience. The GM was uninvolved and very unenthusiastic. Hints were not clear or given in a timely manner. Some of the clues in the room were straightforward and some made no sense. We were always on the right track until the word key in the clue didn't work and the GM didn't help figure it out. He just straight up gave us the answer. We asked him about it at the end, but he just seemed bored and confused. The second portion of the room is too cramped for more than 2 people, so the rest of your group will have to just stand around and wait. At $35/person, we expected more. Spend your time and money elsewhere. (We actually looked for another escape room right after because we had to redeem our night out with a better experience. We're so glad we did! That place also told us to download the "Morty" app to see other escape room locations and see reviews from escape room enthusiasts.) read more

We did the masquerade ball escape room with four people and got out with 11 minutes to spare! For reference we've done about 15 to 20 escape rooms so I would say this one's on the moderate harder side. The production quality is on the lower side for this room in particular, so that's why I'm giving it four stars instead of five. But the escape room itself was very fun. I love how there's additional prizes to be one when you find the coins inside the room. It makes it super fun! And don't forget about the Yelp check in to get additional coins. Escape Duck's Masquerade Manor in Rowland Heights is likely one of the earliest escape rooms in the area, and it's only because we live not a spit away that we have not tried it out yet. Also, most of the what we call "G1" - Generation 1 - rooms are designed for a larger crowd than our (most of the time) duo, but now they are able to adapt to our size - somewhat! - we were very excited to check them out. Escape Duck (what a name!) is located in a small strip mall, so parking was free and sufficient on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The lots are small, as they tend to be in the area, so we were very happy our car is a small one! Since we got in after an hour's drive and a huge lunch, we were also happy to try out their restroom, which was sanitary and functional, and well-stocked with cleaning supplies. Their lobby was also pretty small, but cute, and there was a cabinet of yellow ducky-themed merch, which was interesting. We were very happy that Christina, our gamemaster, did not require us to sign a waiver (the email confirmation to our payment was enough) or to watch a video (our gamemaster gave us a quick rundown of the standard rules) - more to come on that ... So, Masquerade Manor is what we call a "Generation 1" room, which means they are low-to-no tech: we are to escape from a themed room with a scattering of suitcases and a variety of locks. G1 rooms require a good backstory (checked - attend famous composer Ludovico Manin's masquerade ball and find what he stole before getting the key to let us out of the room), nice décor (checked - it was a little sparse compared to some other rooms with a similar theme, but we loved the masks and piano), intriguing puzzles (checked!), an attentive gamemaster (checked) and great photos at the end (checked; since the timer was in the room, we got to pose with it and our time: 59:59 with 4 locks remaining!). Given that we have played a number of rooms, that time should probably be a little embarrassing, but we knew the room was built for 8-10 people with a minimum of 4 so we did not feel terrible about letting the room beat us. We were actually more relaxed than usual getting out of the room after watching the short video that gave us the background to our mission, for an unusual reason: our hints, although not unlimited, were provided by a phone app! At first I was a little disconcerted because I like the human interaction that comes with playing an escape room, but my prosperous half pointed out that this method of clue dispensation was genius for a bi-lingual clientele and game host, because of the duo-language options provided by the app. In addition, we were even given the option to skip the puzzle solving and go straight to the answer for any one lock! There was some time we lost typing in the correct request, but Christina was actually really good about making us aware she still had eyes on us, so when we were totally confused, she was there to step in and help us out. Happily, that only happened once, when we realized black was not always black ...! The thing about G1 room is the sheer number of locks we needed to open, and we definitely spent more time than we should have in the first room, which had to do with the use of the app. It's much, much easier to yell "Clue, please!" and feel some pressure - but with the app, we just didn't feel stressed at all! One other cute thing Escape Duck did was to leave a bunch of bonus coins hidden in the room for us to find - so we left the party with five bonus coins, which got us a duck keychain to remember Masquerade Manor by. This is the perfect room for beginners with a large group, and if you have time between eating and shopping that you need to fill. We would go again to try out another room even if just two of us, too, because G1 rooms are not so easy to find anymore, and this one came with a G1 price! read more

Entering this place, Ooo let me just say they have really good smelling candles everywhere, it felt a little small- compared to the other place that I went to. I was greeted by Daniel, who happen to be the manager. He was such a pleasure to talk to, was a great host and really just made he whole experience super fun! He explained the rules and added a fun little dancing part, which our group loved! The decor of the room is beautiful and detailed and there were so many clues to solve!! I LOVED IT!! Some were easier and others were difficult but definitely goodies!! IT WAS SOO FUN WE DID IT BACK TO BACK!! We were on an escape room high!!! We did Sherlock Holmes Christmas edition and Masquerade Ball! Loved both of them. Sherlock had a bit more reading, very detective like, and Masquerade Ball has so many clues (probably need at least a group of 4 unless you're super pro!) and even a little dancing part! We came in to do the Sherlock Holmes room with 6 enthusiastic peps, 3 of which haven't been to an escape room before and we were able to complete the room with only one clue with 22:00 seconds to spare. Our game master Daniel was super fun and enthusiastic which made the experience really great. If you get stuck, you can always ask for clues to help you along the way. I thought the layout of the escape room was great. The props we're nice and the decor was well thought out. When we first arrived, the gamemaster was quick to greet us and explain to us about their escape rooms. None of these rooms in the Rowland Heights location have jump scares. (Phew!) During the briefing, we were given a walkie-talkie and a tablet that we could use to communicate with the gamemaster for hints. We did the Sherlock Holmes room with a team of 3 people. Although we didn't finish escaping in time, we had a good time solving the puzzles. We only started using more hints toward the 2nd half instead of using them more earlier. The gamemaster was extremely nice, and we could tell she wanted us to have a fun time here. In the end, she explained how to solve the rest of the game and answered our questions about certain puzzles that we missed. We were on the right track, but certain puzzles kept us thinking for too long. The little bonus coins were great as well! My team found 6 coins and were able to trade them in for a prize. There are 3 different escape rooms to pick from depending on if you're new to escape rooms. In the escape room you get over an hour to leave the room. When you're stuck in the escape room you can ask them for a hint. Our party of 7 did the Sherlock Holmes escape room for beginners, and although it is the easiest escape room to do we quickly and decisively finished the room. Part of a family with locations in New York, this small outposts hosts two small escape rooms in a large strip mall with plenty of parking. The patient and friendly gamemasters explain the rules in the beginning. You can take personal items into the room, and can also put them in a storage area in the room. My group settled on "Sherlock's Study", purportedly the easier one out of the two, and finished with about 20 minutes to spare. The escape room was straightforward and easy to follow, which made it easy to let groups of folks work on different puzzles of the linear story. As the clues are spread out, so teamwork is a must to coordinate your critical thinking to solve your locks. The room fits ten, but I usually find smaller groups works better for team communication. Although the decor could have been more immersive, I didn't feel too much pressure in "Sherlock's Study" with hints available if you ask the awesome staff.
