Alright, well I'll start abbreviating, lol...GSENM. It covers a huge area of Southern Utah, specifically, 1.9 million acres of public land. If you don't come prepared ahead of time, it can be an intimidating adventure and you can stumble on how to efficiently navigate your way around this remote, yet beautiful part of the country. That's why I believe if you start at the Interagency VC...you can handcraft the places and stops you'd like to see and best of all, when I visited, there were multiple park rangers standing behind the counter patiently waiting to assist tourists with their questions. Inside the VC...it's relatively small in stature...and there's a tiny little gift shop for picking up GSENM souvenirs. Plus, they have various stamping options to put into your Parks Passport. Of course, for myself, the ritual is to punch every page (front and back) even including using the Junior Ranger stamp, lol. Speaking with the park rangers was necessary because...I arrived here on a whim without a set game-plan. What I never realized about GSENM is that about half of the territory can only be accessed by 4x4 - off road vehicles. And that I did not have with me. So...certain attractions, landmarks and hikes are off-limit to cars not accommodative for dirt/gravel roads. And...this was informative because I was able to better design my itinerary with the park ranger once I told him I only had a midsize car with me. Still, here were some fun highlights that the ranger recommended.... - Hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls. - Hike to Escalante Natural Bridge. - Escalante Petrified Forest State Park. - Anasazi State Park Museum. - Walk among the Toadstools. - Kodachrome Basin State Park. Another good aspect to this Interagency VC is that it's located in the quiet town of Escalante, Utah...good for convenience stores, filling up your gas tank, purchasing supplies/necessities and sitting down at restaurants. After stopping here midday and before venturing out on my journey, I drove down the road to the Escalante Outfitters Restaurant for homemade pizza and cold beer. Overall, I'm really happy I made the effort to stop in at this Escalante Interagency Visitor Center before attempting to explore GSENM on my own. It was worthwhile to speak with the park rangers and to narrow down the activity options appropriate for my participation level.

This was a stop on our road trip to the "big 5" national parks in Utah, and it was definitely worth it. The building and facilities were all clean and new-looking, with a modern look that apparently has sustainability in the design. The rangers here were helpful and were apparently glad to have someone to talk to, as when we drove through over Labor Day there weren't too many people around. Fortunately things were more or less open despite COVID-19, and everyone followed proper safety protocols - masks, distancing, hand sanitizer, etc. Though the exhibit space in the building was closed, temporarily. We were able to have our junior rangers participate in the junior ranger program, so they got their badges. Note if you ever visit a national park center with kids, ask about this program. They can do a few activities and get a neat souvenir reward.

We hiked both the deer canyon (day) and night star gazing tour and both were excellent. I planned a trip to Arizona just to see Antelope Canyon. It wasn't until a week before my trip…read morethat I realized that Antelope Canyon is on Navajo land and you need a guided tour to be able to visit. I did some research and since I was going in February, it didn't matter if I went to Upper Canyon because I wouldn't be able to see the light tunnels. When I was trying to decide which one to go to, and which tour company, I came across a travel blogger who had done all three parts. He said that he recommended Canyon X. I saw that Taadidiin Tour was the only tour operator for Canyon X. The reviews stated that it was less crowded and less rushed, resulting in an opportunity to get better pictures. I was sold. I booked for a Wednesday at 1 PM since a lot of the recommendations said 10 AM to 1 PM was a good time. However, the morning of there was a snowstorm at the Grand Canyon and we could not exit the east entrance to Cameron and had to detour to the south entrance through Flaggstaff and with the snowstorm we would have made it right around the start of the tour and not 20 to 30 minutes early. I called when they opened and spoke to Naomi who was very friendly and accommodating and rebooked my family to 3 PM. A couple hours later got a call from Kendrick saying that they're making the difficult decision to cancel all the tours for the remainder of the day due to snow and the road closures. We discussed options and he was able to rebook me for 9 AM the next day. He was very helpful and friendly as well. We arrived the next morning and the check-in process was very smooth. We were told to come back about 10 minutes before the tour and could use the porta potties. The ride to the canyon was about 10 min. It was bumpy because the road is terrain and not paved. We were in like a 14 passenger van. Our tour guide was with Tommy and he was so friendly and funny. He showed us where we should take pictures and helped us take pictures as well using the panorama features. Even though I didn't go in the afternoon as originally planned the 9 AM timeslot was great. The tour was an hour and a half. There are steps to walk down and which is the easy part, but you do have to take the steps back up. The other family with us had young children and a toddler with a car seat, but they did fine.

The Land Of Oz…read more.... My wife and I planned a 2 week road trip across the Southwest US with a 5 night stop in Kanab. One day was for Zion National Park and most of the other 3 days were for our first visit to Best Friends. It was time well spent. As a Facebook friend explained....."There is nothing in this world like Best Friends. What they do is amazing. Angels come to life right here on earth." Best Friends is not a country version of any animal shelter you've experienced. It's like a city for cats, dogs, goats, horses, pigs, rabbits and others who were abandoned, injured or thrown away - spread among 4,200 acres of buildings, corrals and playgrounds. For most people, it's the biggest farm or ranch they've ever seen or imagined. Best Friends is massive, but their job is massive. They accept animals from all situations across the US...rehabilitate them and facilitate their fostering or adoption. During the fires in Los Angeles, they rescued hundreds. Aside from a happy home, an animal remaining at Best Friends will receive more care and love from employees (815) and volunteers (thousands) than anywhere else. We took the Grand Sanctuary Tour one day and went on 2 tours another day to the Bunny House and Goat/Pigs. Then we volunteered an afternoon with 2 dogs which was something we'll never forget. And remember to stop at their cafe. For $5, you get a buffet lunch of great tasting vegan food...and a view from the large patio overlooking what you'd swear is the Grand Canyon. Best Friends helps them live their best lives. It's like the Land of Oz.

It was a nice ride in his 6 seater can-am. The ride was way to rough for a normal car and it looked like you could get lost way to easy. Jeff was very knowledgable and gave us a little lesson on geological make up of the area. We had a great time and got some great pictures. I would do this trip again. His prices were very reasonable and Jeff was not it a rush. Take your time and enjoy the journey.

There ain't a lot to do out in Escalante. Why not drive down a long, bumpy dirt road to a garden…read moremade for the Devil? If your vehicle can do it, definitely go down there. The drive is pretty boring. Straight, not a lot to see. But when you arrive, holy moly, it's amazing. First, WHY is this group of formations out here? There's nothing like it nearby? Fascinating! There is a dirt parking area and some of those wooden information signs that are hardly legible from the years of sun and sand. Such a delightful adventure to run and play among the hoodoos, arches, sand and rocks. It really did invoke a sense of wonder for me. It was worth every boring mile to get there and get back.
