I really liked doing it with a group of friends for the fun energy factor, but I would also go back and do it as a date night to just do something different than a regular dinner date. It's worth the time - good if you've done it before (everyone else in my group had) and not too intimidating if you're a newbie like me. Since they're on wheels it would also be convenient to have them come to you for a work event or group party. Cheers to a new and fun way to spend an evening!

My wife purchased the experience for my birthday, and she went ahead since I was still paying for parking. I walked down down the stairs at the corner of the hotel, and let me tell you - you are not prepared for what you are in for. Opening the door I was instantly in the subway, complete with train rumbling and just feel in the air of what it was like growing up in New York City. The second set of doors led me inside, where our ticket-taker, Tyler, greeted me with a birthday welcome. The entrance is exquisitely done, with Japanese snacks available "before boarding". They had some of the more common ones, like Pocky sticks, but a few I haven't seen since way back before I moved to Utah. Time came for our train, and I was given a token to purchase from the vending machine. Thus began our adventure. Spoiler free, but quick object of the game here is not to win quicky, but to experience the story WHILE winning. Winning, in this sense, was collecting soul tokens, to be turned in after the game. There are tons of puzzles and games to figure out, a lot of storytelling in the background, and for me (who may be slightly older than the normal demographic) there was so many artifacts and historical callouts that I was amazed. Everything from the original Godzilla Kaiju from the 1950s, to Astroboy, old Nintendo games in their original Japanese, photos, and so much more - if you like Japanese history at all, you'll be fascinated by that alone. Some of the puzzles were fairly difficult, others our team were able to figure out without relatively too much trouble, We were paired with a really good group of 4 people, who made the experience enjoyable and, despite a probably 15+ year age difference, we meshed fairly well with our skills and strengths. Special shoutout to Tyler, though, who is committed through and through to the part. Extremely welcoming, genial, and knowledgeable, he was a fantastic part of the experience. I even got a few little items to take home for my birthday, which I have happily displayed at my desk. I appreciate "the bald guy" and really want him to get recognized for such a great experience. All in all? I was thoroughly entertained by the aesthetics in general, I loved the overall feel of the experience, even weeks later I am still amazed by some of the items they have even in the opening room, and I've recommended it to a ton of people. A+ entertainment in Utah, something I really hope they expand on.

We managed to snag the last 2 spots that opened up during the 5:05 time slot before our flight back home. The branding was very impressive. The initial theme was Japanese subway station, and the entrance to the escape room was underground and through a cool little hallway that reminded me completely of the movie, "Exit 8". As we entered the lobby, we were greeted by the most enthusiastic, welcoming, and professional host, Tyler, who gave us a great rundown on what to expect and the format of the game. We were told that we were not only to purely focus on solving the clues, but also to look for coins that we can collect as "soul coins"? And having more of those will win us more points. We were paired with another group of 4, where 3 of them had done this experience before. Then mentioned that they will let the newbies try to "figure out most of the clues". Unfortunately the other group was very enthusiastic, and ended up just giving us instructions the entire time on how to solve each clue. I spent a lot of my time just wandering and looking for coins, because I feel that everyone else completely took over the clues, and I didn't have much of a chance to "figure anything out". There were a few spaces in the rooms that only fit 1-2 people, so I don't even think I got to see the entire rooms. At the end of the game, Tyler noticed that I was a bit upset because I personally did not have a good time. They offered to refund us, as well as gave us an option to come back and try the experience again. I felt pretty bad because my experience had nothing to do with how the game was run, we were just unfortunate paired with the wrong people. I would definitely come back again to give the game another change, but I would try to bring enough friends to fill an entire group! Thanks Tyler and owner for being so understanding and empathetic of the situation, I am blown away by the hospitality and compassion of the company. The rooms are beautiful, creative, and super interactive. Next time I would definitely come back and try to touch everything so I get the full experience!

Cowboy Quickshot: Little hard to find and a little empty but dang this place deserves more…read moreattention. Very original and unique experience, fun for a lil date night or a group outing. You get a lot of freedom to play whatever games you want and move at your own pace. I think the original quickshot is the most fun. Make sure to be patient when loading the wax pellets as you want to reduce the chance of a misfire. For some reason we were admonished for using a cell phone as a flashlight in a dark space.

Mystery Escape Room, with locations in Salt Lake City as well as Tucson, did just that with their European Café mystery game, Café Amour, which we picked because it was a 40-minute escape room designed for 2 people, and it was rated mildly challenging. When we were booking our game, we saw on the web site that Mystery Escape Room does not offer refunds on cancelled bookings, but are more than happy to reschedule our visit, or place our tickets on will call to be used at any time and does not ever expire, which was good, because it was a bit of a drive for us to get to The Gateway shopping mall in downtown Salt Lake City. We need not have worried, however: getting to The Gateway was not a bad drive at all on a Saturday morning. The standard mall parking offered off street have their own app so it took us a while to get out of the car, but a short walk through the mall concourse, then up and down the escalator later and we found ourselves at the escape room - 30 full minutes before opening time at noon! Happily, the door was unlocked, and we were able to seat ourselves in the lobby and look through the 3-D image books and Elf-on-a-Shelf photo album while waiting. There were also puzzles on the bookcase, which was held a surprise in itself. Our fantastic game host, Kiki, was able to fit us a whole half hour early, which was more than great, because it was already 98°F out at 11:30am, and there was scant shade in the outdoor mall. The introductory video was self-produced and very amusing, and just gave Kiki the exact amount of time to get the room ready early and show us into the very dark second lobby. The game started even before we entered Lobby 2, and even that was only the preamble to our real experience, which finally started after we made our way through a themed doorway. Café Amour is a perfect date-night (or day) G1 (very low-tech, with conventional locks and lots of brain work) game, which took us to the streets of old Europe, from the glass-stained windows to the wood-and-brick décor. The rules of the game were laid out clearly ahead of time, and Kiki was terrific keeping us on track - very important for a short-term room. Since this game is a more intimate game within at least two other rooms, we really appreciated the clear labels on what was not part of the game. Our favourite puzzle was the one we had to solve using playing cards, and although the word association puzzle was interesting, it was also confusing because it didn't seem in-theme. This probably had to do with the fact that Café Amour was part of a larger experience, and our exit also did not seem to fully complete the one (café mystery) experience. It was / is, however, a clever way to entice us to continue our escape room experience with them again. This was our only gripe, and why this is a four-star review rather than a 5. The short-term rooms at The Escape Date and A Great Escape (both previously reviewed) were more dedicated and focused. That said, we really enjoyed our time at Café Amour and the big perk was the freebie take-home at the end. There was a clock in the room that was not used but our time of 33:45 was meticulously tracked by Kiki, who actually did a five-star job. We remain constantly surprised by how ingeniously all the different rooms in Utah are conceptualized and built, and we are really appreciative of how all our game hosts so far have taken the trouble to appear in costume and character. Our games have not been just "our" games, and it's so refreshing to see gamemasters enjoying our game along with us. We can't wait to try out the other rooms offered by Mystery Room - and soon! When we're too worn out from hiking the Beehive State's gorgeous waterfalls, or if we just want the…read moreexperience of escaping a dark, cold forest getting ready to be roasted in an oven by sister witches without wearing hiking gear, we head to one of the many spellbinding escape rooms in the state. Unfortunately, the cost of an hour is just about as high as that in SoCal now that inflation has hit, but for fun in private, with no waiting and unparalleled immersiveness, escape rooms are a family entertainment we are so grateful is available to us, and, more importantly, for a duo, which we now are, since we are empty-nesting! Our first escape room in Utah this year was with More than Mysteries in Murray, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Hansel and Gretel is a favourite Grimm tale, and we wanted something cutely creepy but not really scary - and did More than Mysteries deliver! More than Mysteries is located on the third floor of an office building, easy to find if you followed Google's breadcrumbs. Upon exiting the elevator (or take the stairs), turn right towards the toilet and it's the business at the end of the floor. We were there about five minutes early on a Monday, and we did something we never thought we would ever do: we did the scaring! Our game mistresses - not one, but two - sister green witches in full garb - opened the door the same time we did, and we pretty much stumbled onto each other. We just had enough time to take in that the lobby was beautifully furnished, and before we knew what was going on (good thing we signed our waivers before!), we were measured (heads and general oven-fitness), instructed on our roles and responsibilities (no videos, hurray!) and shoved (gently) into the candy cottage. We were allowed to keep our phones, but there were lockers if we wanted them. It was déjà vu! We've done other similar themes but this was very original. In spite of the witches' fear, it was not too hot, nor too cold (it was nice they told us they would adjust to our temperature preference) and was decorated just like an antique book illustration, absolutely gorgeous and in-theme. The cat was an especially well-thought-out touch. It was a dim room but, again, plenty of lights were included for ambience and game and there were not so many red herrings as you would think in a room so well-laid-out: many times, what appeared to be a red herring was actually essential to our very simple goal of getting out of the witches' clutches. Hansel and Gretel was what we would call an intermediate G2 (second generation, medium-tech) room, with traditional locks and a couple of higher tech locks, with a good hint delivery system and a timer in the room. We were grateful for the pen & paper provided for notes, because the clues were not that straightforward, and the non-linear aspect of the game meant that sometimes two puzzles were needed to open a third lock. Our favourite puzzles were the ants and the candles - so clever! It was the perfect room for two to four people, very family-friendly (with only one or two locks which needed bending down to access), perfect for a date, to start the day or end it. We made it out of the forest in 50:28, completely forgetting about the chocolates and lemon drops. It was a sad second when we took off our costumes to take our victory photos on our phones and with hand painted signs. For the first time ever, we actually had our photos taken with our game hosts! We had a really good time, and really appreciate the thank-you email sent to us after the game. The room was so well-planned and thought-through, it was as though we were really walking in the footsteps of the original fairytale. We can't wait for the summer to get here so we can visit again for their new rooms: Black Widow Escape and Curse of the Enchanted Artifact. Perhaps if we followed the trail of the spiders instead of pebbles ...

Some of the clues were pretty tricky but we had such an experienced and smart group- we were told we were close to beating the record for solving the whole room, we finished with 15 mins to spare! My recommendation would be to keep your group smaller (5-6) so you have more touches with the clues. Since there were so many of us I was only able to help with a small portion of all the clues.

The host is terrible. They are more concerned about you stealing escape room ideas(forced to lock phones), than a great user experience (terrible hints). Everything is locks based. No real puzzles. No real mechanisms. Everything is cheaply made. Lots of random props with no purpose. No real storyline or true purpose of the room. The good: none (this place is so run down, the floor creeks from above). I'm so frustrated, I'll never wast my money at any of this company's escape room again. I'm especially upset at the host. If you get stuck, you will hope that at some point, they just tell you exactly what to do, instead we were stuck for 60minutes on a stupid suitcase that had the dumbest coding ever. Even after failing the dang room, he refused to tell us how to escape the room. He just open the door for us to leave. WTF! Save your money. Go somewhere where they care about you having a great time and want you to come back.

Unfortunately, our group left after a frustrating experience since our room was quite literally impossible to escape from. Let me explain: Our group of five booked the Fahrenheit 451 online in advance. We checked in, placed our belongings in lockers, and went into a room that was cleverly designed to hide clues. We started solving puzzles, got a hint from the Enigma Escape worker, and were eventually able to open the door into the second room of the Fahrenheit 451 experience. From here, the experience went downhill. Without giving too much away for those who want to try this room for themselves, of the puzzles in this second room requires you to find seven gears before you can proceed in your escape efforts. During our search for the gears, our team asked for a hint, and the screen used to provide hints froze, meaning we couldn't receive hints/communication from the staff (to their credit, they handwrote a clue on a note for us and slipped it under the door while rebooting the system, which later worked). With five minutes of time left on our clock, we had six of the seven gears, but there was a letter-based combination lock on a box we were confident contained the last gear needed for our puzzle. We asked for a clue, and were told to use the information from a couple of specific items we'd collected. We'd already tried all of the letter combinations from those already, but we tried again based on the clue--still no luck. As time expires, the worker comes in to tell us we were out of time. Feeling like we'd spent forever on this gear puzzle, we asked if we could have just a couple more minutes to solve it. She told us no, because she'd felt bad about the screen freezing earlier and had already given us an extra five minutes to compensate for that (which was nice of her). So we asked if we could at least have the code of the lock we'd struggled for so long to open. She asked if we'd tried the combinations from the items we'd collected, and we told her that we had. She said, "all four of them?" We'd only collected three, but we showed her where we found them (turns out one of them was found from a place it shouldn't have been hidden), and she showed us where the fourth should have been hidden, but wasn't (our group had checked there). It turns out this missing fourth item contained the letter combination needed to open the lock. Since it wasn't where it was supposed to be hidden, the employee gave us the combination, and when we unlocked the box, it had the fourth item (containing the combination code) inside of it -- in other words, they very key needed to unlock a box was locked in that box you needed the key to unlock, making it an impossible challenge to solve. The employee told us that our hunch was correct and that the last gear should have been in the box, rather than the fourth item that gave the code. It turns out that the employee who reset the room not only hid the code in the wrong spot, but also failed to hide the last gear to the puzzle, and merely left it in place from where the last group had placed it to solve the final puzzle to escape (the puzzle you weren't supposed to unlock before you had collected all seven gears). So, we learned that our group isn't dumb, we were just given a room that was impossible to solve because it wasn't properly reset by employees. To her credit, the employee who helped us was apologetic and kind the whole time, and offered us a coupon code for our next visit (though we felt as though this coupon is a bounce-back coupon that everyone receives). But we left frustrated and with a sour taste in our mouths from the experience.
