I'm new to the bixby knolls area. I walked into the shop today and I'm lucky I made it out with whatever hair I had left. A gentleman with a bald head and tattoos cut my hair. He used one pair of clippers no guard to blend and had me looking chopped and stressed out. I'm glad I walked out and went to the barbershop 2 doors down. DO NOT COME HERE. Just walked in the door to get information. There was one barber cutting one guy's hair. I start asking questions to get a read on the shop bc I've never been there and the barber was so incredibly rude. Looked like he couldn't be more bothered to have a conversation with me. Looked at me like he hated me and that I was stupid. I assume he looks at people he doesn't know like that all the time. I'm getting married this weekend and my long term barber cancelled. I'm simply looking for help. He barely said a word to me then put the fakest smile on his face and told me to call the number for an appointment, which I'm aware of. But if you read reviews it looks like some people have been able to walk in the door. I was just trying to get information. I'm used to getting the GEN Z stare from well... Gen Z. Not old men. Customer service isn't hard at all. I just don't understand people like this. Obviously I won't be calling this place ever. Happened on 8/25/25 around 1:45PM. The place next door has better reviews, they were just closed. I'd suggest going there first and maybe they'll talk to you more like an adult when you want information. Very disappointed in my cut. The manager did not listen to what I wanted and decided to cut a lot shorter and responded with "It looks better this way!" Completely disregarding that I did not want to be nearly bald. I wanted to donate my hair in the near future and only wanted a clean up off the back and neck. I am still in shock! I have been here for all of my prior haircuts about 6 times before. I trusted them. The asian guy who to the best of my knowledge owns the place butchered my hair! I walked in and it was if he was eating lunch it seemed like. Which is fine. Keep eating your lunch, or make me wait, or ask the other dude (latin looking dude real cool cut my hair before does a good job) cut my hair. Instead he says "wait 5 min," ok i said. So he comes out in less than 5 min and proceeds to butcher my hair. Now there is one of two reasons why he butchered my hair. 1) he was upset because i cut his lunch short. 2) he was drunk. I have seen him drinking before. My brother also worked next door and would see him killing Hennessy in the back. This is like the 6th time i have been to this place. Twice has the guy in the first chair cut my hair. And the rest with the asian guy. He really cuts hair good and takes his time. On this particular day like i have stated earlier with the reasons, is why I will never go back. I probably will end up cutting my hair really short so it can semi blend but the smallest clip he cut with is so high i may have to go bald. NEVER EVER IN MY LIFE HAD A LINE UP ON MY HAIRLINE... I've been going to this shop for about two years now. Everytime I go in Leo and Louie always treat me well. You know you're gonna leave looking great by the amount of care and precision that they put into their work. I feel like I'm getting a bargain everytime too. Poor communication and very unprofessional. This shop is clean, but the barbers are barely above a SUPERCUTS or Sport Clips and seem to struggle with even a basic fade. Appointment system is joke. Walked in (Shop was empty) and was given a 4pm appointment time. Fine. Walked around a bit, came back at 4pm just as another person sat in the chair. The barber responded "Oh you'll be next." Lol wut? Why give me an appointment time at 4pm if you had someone else waiting? The barber responded "He has a 4pm appointment from yesterday." ....... Avoid this place. Esquire is a barber shop in Bixby Knolls, one of the nicer parts of Long Beach, tucked in and hidden along Atlantic avenue and surrounding businesses. I walked in and inquired on the wait time for one cut and I was told there was no wait. I informed the gentlemen that answered me that I would be coming back in about an hour and he said that wouldn't be a problem. When I returned with my brother, the same man sprung out of his seat to assist us. He took his time, so careful and detail oriented. You could tell he knew what he was doing and that there was passion involved. He was great, finished promptly and made sure we were content with the final result. He really did do a good job, practically transformed the nest sitting atop my brother's head. The atmosphere is very clean and modern, nothing like the shops where you pay $7 and have to wait on an old couch that reeks of cigarette with the springs piercing through the seat poking at your buttcheek as you patiently await your turn. Here they have a really nice, sleek, catalog couch that smells lovely and has springs in tact. The bill was $20 even and with $10 tip, $30 isn't bad for a haircut. Check them out, you may have a new favorite barber shop. Your butt will thank you. read more

Louie gives a good cut, and is a chill guy. They need to cut the jackass punk who sits there mumbling about how messed up he got last night, or how tough he is...to the point of trying to pick a fight with customers as they leave. Not a very sound business model, if you ask me...and will give me second thoughts on returning again. Again, you're good with Louie or Lou...avoid the younger, less skilled, more vulgar dude...unless you want your hair cut by a jackhole, who's most likely higher than a kite while operating sharp instruments near your dome. read more

Came in about noon with one other guy ahead of me and one fella in the chair. So i figured I'd wait it out. Another barber was in the back kept walking in the room and walking back into a back room. He finally came in the room and he let some folks in the back door right into a awaiting chair not apologizing for any of the other 3 people who had been waiting for almost an hour. We have had decent service, however about two months ago we showed up for our scheduled appointment and the "closed" sign was up. It was 3:30pm on a weekday. The place reeked of marijuana. My son did get his hair cut that day, but we had clearly interrupted their "break." Today my son had an appointment at 4:30pm. We show up and the "closed" sign was up again. I texted the barber to let him know we were there and no response. I called the shop's number and was told that they were having a "meeting" and that there was no one available to cut my son's hair. The smell of marijuana was seeping out through the door. This is very unprofessional and whoever I spoke with was pretty unapologetic and basically said I needed to work it out with the barber. We won't be going back and sad that we have to stop supporting a neighborhood business due to unprofessionalism and lack of customer service. read more

When you walk in you are instantly greeted. They build good rapport with their customers, get to know you. I rarely write reviews and when I do, it's for either a very positive experience or a very bad experience. In this case its a bad one. I just wasted 32 mins of my time waiting for a haircut and never happened. There were 3 barbers when i came in, and one customer who was ahead of me. I assumed I would be next. While waiting, none of the employees acknowledged me nor informed me about the wait. I figure I would wait and just assume my turn would be after the kid in front of me. One of the 3 barbers finished up with a customer and cleans up then takes off - I figure he's off his shift. No worries, I figure there are 2 barbers left and I would be next. As the 2 barbers are working on the customers another customer walks in ahead of me. Shortly after, one of the two barbers finishes up but immediately takes in the customer who came in after me. Again no word was said to me until i made an obvious but subtle facial gesture. The other barber finally then explained that he had an appointment. Ok, cool- so i waited again. Finally, 1 of the two barbers left finished up and the customer paid and left. At that point, I thought I finally might get a haircut. But no, this barber just starts working and writing on the books/receipts for at least 6 mins without saying a word to me until I finally just had enough and walk out. Again, not a word said to me as I walk out I'm a super chill dude and have a lot of patience, but this was just ridiculous. I would have given 1 star, however I gave 2 because I've been here last year and was given ok service. Never returning here after this terrible experience. So I'm writing this as I'm getting a mediocre haircut across the street at supercuts- though supercut's customer service is outstanding compared to this place. What a shame. I've been coming here for a little over a year now and Louie has cut my hair each time. I won't be going anywhere else because his customer service is great. He instantly makes you feel welcome and will carry on a conversation the entire time. I recommend calling in to check his availability, because like anyone who's great at what they do, they will be in high demand. Bring cash because they don't accept credit cards. The person complaining about this below obviously doesn't own a business and doesn't know how the credit card companies work. Sometimes it's easier for a small business like barber shops or tattoo shops (my profession) to be cash only. So check this place out, you won't be disappointed! read more
