I had my first foster dog for a few months and she recently got adopted to a wonderful family. I can't tell you how cool it was to help a dog who literally was on death row at a local shelter to get healthy again and then to find a new home. AARF made it a really easy and rewarding experience to volunteer and they help wonderful animals find great homes. There are other rescue groups in Atlanta and they are all doing amazing work. I'm certainly not saying AARF is any better than any other rescue group because I haven't volunteered with any others but I am saying that the people at AARF rock and I really love working with them.

Fostering an animal while it finds a home is one of the best things a person can do. Animals in tiny cages where they don't get room to run and play can get issues that can take years of training and care to treat. But, give a homeless animal a temporary home while you find a permanent one and it can learn from your other pets or just get used to what it is like to have a nice home. These people are there on a Sunday morning before 8:00, ready to do their jobs. One of the most impressive things is the organization of the whole process. Everyone is focused on whatever task they have. It's crowded, lots of dogs and people. Yet the experience for me was of organized efficiency. Staff communicate continually, with each other and all the people waiting. I really can't stress enough about what a completely successful visit I had. Again, I thank the awesome staff.

They do an interview and check references, and they're very concerned with making sure the animal goes to a good home. They made sure she was up to date on all her veterinary care and provided me with detailed information on her health history. They even stamped a tag for me while we were interviewing. Seeing how they behave really shows how well they're cared for and prepped before going to their forever homes. The dogs are kept in nicer spaces that are behind glass. If you're interested in interacting with the pets, you let an employee/volunteer know and you're put into a room to spend time together. We were only casually looking and there with a friend who was considering adopting. In her interactions in the days leading up to our visit, the said the staff was very quick to respond and helpful. The one downside was that I felt the staff/volunteers were very pushy in trying to get the animals adopted... but at the end of the day, they're also just doing their jobs!
