I went to a different stylist from the one I usually go to because he was out of town. Jay(my usual stylist) did a digital perm on me last time which turned out perfect. I went with another stylist since I've been going to this salon for 10 years and Jay has never done me wrong. This time, I asked for another digital perm and Elisha completely ruined my hair. I should have known because first she talked me out of getting the one I got before (which took Jay 6 hours) saying it would be more "low maintenance" and would look better on me. She finished my haircut with perm within 2.5 hours. Her blond haired assistant/student kept aggressively pushing my head forward bc naturally I had a lot of curlers which made my head start to lean back at times even though I was trying my best to keep it straight. I know perms dry your hair out and Jay would always advise me to do at home treatments for upkeep, but this time I had to buy hundreds of dollars worth of deep conditioning masks/oils/treatments to get my hair to look somewhat normal on top of the hundreds of dollars I already spent on the perm Elisha gave me. I thought about not writing this review since I love going to Jay and the staff he has around him have always been so sweet, but my experience with Elisha was not good. I thought she was nice at the time, but she left me with worse hair than when I went in with/than I've ever had in my life. I will have to get it done again bc no amount of masks/oils can fix it. read more

I strongly don't recommend hair dye, hair cut, and perm here. My hair stylist Jisun was welcoming but skills are lacking cause my wolfcut looks like clumps sectioned off. Half the time she handed me off to a blond dyed hair girl student who repeatly hit my head with a hair blow dryer while blowing my hair and then got dye on my shirt and skin on & around my head; which remained on my skin for 3 weeks (I never experienced this with other Salons I've gone to for hair dyes) I didn't pay for a student price, I paid for a professional service ($$$) so this was very disrespectful & unethical of Etude Salon. My perm was done incorrectly and costed me more time and money to fix it elsewhere. The young girls at reception don't know how to talk or be welcoming; will tell you to fetch things for them. read more

Today, I went to their new location at 315 W Olympic blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90015 and the service was great! If you drive there, make sure you park inside the "Retail & Guest Parking" because you get a 2 hour validation. Just scan the QR code after your hair appointment at the front desk! I had the mistake of assuming the garage gate wasn't opening so I called Etude lol, but know that you have to dry closer to the garage gate in order for it to open! Great salon and aesthetics. I live nearby so coming here is super convenient in my schedule. Plus parking is free in the structure. Coming to the salon is very methodical. Come in, get greeted, sit at table until the assistant comes over and brings you to get your hair washed, then they'll bring you to your station while you wait for your stylist. The stylist will ask what you're looking for, I'll show some inspo pics, and the rest of the session is pretty performance-oriented. Not much chit chat. If you're looking for a more social, chit chat haircutting session, this place isn't for you. The only reason why I took off a star is because each visit, the stylist will try to upsell me on services-- recommending color or a perm or their more expensive services. I don't appreciate this. I made a point to read all of the reviews that weren't 5 stars because I genuinely couldn't understand how this salon has so many glowing reviews based on my experiences. I gave this salon two chances with two different hairstylists because I wanted to believe my first visit was just an exception. Unfortunately, both experiences were very similar. The biggest issue was communication. Neither stylist spoke enough English for us to have a basic conversation about what I wanted, which immediately made me uneasy. I had a very simple request: no layers, no thinning, and only trim 1-2 inches because I prefer to keep my hair long. During my first appointment, the stylist immediately tried to convince me to get layers and have my hair thinned despite me clearly saying I didn't want either. Throughout the appointment, she also kept encouraging me to come back for a keratin treatment to straighten my hair--even though my hair is already naturally straight. It felt like I was being sold services instead of having my requests listened to. A couple of months later, I decided to give the salon another chance with a different stylist. Unfortunately, it was the same experience. Communication was difficult, the stylist wasn't particularly friendly or personable, and I never felt confident that she understood what I wanted, even after I showed multiple inspiration photos. For context, I don't color or chemically treat my hair. I only come in for simple haircuts. If a salon struggles with something as basic as following straightforward haircut instructions, it doesn't give me confidence in the level of experience or attention to detail of the stylists. The customer service at the front desk also left a lot to be desired. The receptionists didn't feel welcoming, and the interaction noticeably became friendlier only after I tipped my stylist more than 15%. Given the prices this salon charges, I expected much better communication, customer service, and a stylist who would simply listen to what I asked for. I went to Etude for the first time today and decided to get side bangs. We had an appointment for 6:15pm, and showed up on time. When we walked in, the front desk told us (slightly irritated) that they were waiting for us because they were supposed to get off at 6pm. We were never asked to show up early, not sure why it was our fault even though we showed up on time. We were asked to pay first and give tips even before we received any service. My stylist was Chanel and while she's very nice, I think she was not very knowledgeable on how to cut hair. I showed her the reference photo (attached) and she started to cut my hair into straight line bangs. I asked, "it's not going to be straight like this right?" and she confidently replied "I know," so I trusted that she knew what she was doing. When she started drying my hair, I quickly realized she did NOT understand what I meant, despite the reference photo and even questioning once during the haircut. When I mentioned once again that I wanted side bangs, she said "oh side bangs?" Then tried to fix it but it was already cut too short... A few other stylists came over to try and fix it but it still just looks awkward now. They also said it looks weird because of my previous root perm, but I will let the attached photo speak for itself. Everyone tried to convince me that it looks fine and it will look good once it grows out. I left very sad and upset, because there was really nothing they could do to fix it. I wasn't even offered a refund at any point and now I will have to hide these bangs somehow for the next month until it's grown out. I paid $30 +tips for this service (bangs cut alone), and was extremely disappointed by the work that was done. My friend, who also came to fix her bangs, left the salon looking the exact same as she came in. They cut like two parts super quickly and she was done. That also cost her $30 +tips. My boyfriend also joined us and his haircut was rushed, his suggestions/preferences were declined (his stylist straight up told him no), and they did not even style or put any product in his hair (he paid $60 +tips). Amongst the three of us, none of us had a good experience and are wondering how the reviews are so good. Everyone is nice though, but I'm not sure that's very helpful when you walk out feeling upset and defeated. read more

Came here for a simple haircut a few months ago after hearing great reviews of the spot -- overall the ambiance is nice and they wash your hair well. However, my haircut was extremely rushed... I asked for layers and a simple trim to keep my length. She repeatedly told me that she couldn't do layers for me because my hair was too thin, on top of that when the haircut was finished she didn't ask me if I wanted any changes and she went immediately into styling. I also had to remind her to add in hair protectant (considering my thin hair). Olivia was so precise in her application and attentive through the whole process. I really felt like I was getting pampered from the tea and snacks, relaxing hair washing, and consistent communication. I did a root bleach and tone and haircut. The booking process was easy and pricing was transparent. I've tried a couple different salons for bleaching and etude is well worth the price.
