I think perhaps this place wasn't my bag. I thought all the wines were fine, but not something that I would drink on a regular basis. I did the private food and wine and pairing/tasting and unfortunately we arrived to the tasting late and missed the first two tastes--it threw my whole experience off. I think had i started off here, it might have been better, or had i just done tasting it might have been better, but i was full from lunch and a little groggy from the drive so maybe that's what the issue was. I'd be willing to try it again, but the wines were definitely a little bit on the pricey side. I am very undecided on if i would return. As I type this I have changed my mind back and forth like three times. Alright--they were nice people...every winery that doesn't suffer from pretentious snobbery deserves a second glance in my book. Tried both the $15 and the $25 samples. I really enjoyed the 2007 Deer Camp Pinot Noir, but except that, nothing else stood out for me.

She has an amazing personable connection to wine, and educates you on the wines and the regions. What are the chances? As he waited for the seats to get filled, our host worked the room, breaking the ice and chatting everyone up. It was apparent that a vast majority of the tasters were well-versed in wine, wine making and the Etude story. When the clock struck our appointed time, our host asked us whether, instead of going through his regular spiel and tasting the pre-determined menu of wines, he could offer us some of the wines (from magnum) they had poured the prior night at a gala on the property. Of course, we all said no because we wanted to be lectured to and...yeah, right, like we'd turn down an offer like that. What ensued was one of the most interesting wine tastings I have had in a long while. He quickly poured tiny samples of the pinot gris and the rose, just to get through that stage. He followed that up with generous (see: "copious") pours of the Carneros Estate, Deer Camp and Heirloom pinots. Next came the really interest part: the magnums. We had various vintages of the different pinots, as well as the cabs. I was a "little" tipsy toward the end, but I think we ended up tasting a total of 11 wines. Everyone, regardless of wine knowledge or experience, engaged in discussion about the wines themselves, the grape-growing and vintage variations. This was an unpretentious, open and personal experience that is unlikely to happen to me again. read more

Since I enjoyed their Pinot Noir before at the Village Bar & Bistro restaurant, I decided to visit them for wine tasting. The tasting room was very modern. I liked how all the wines were displayed against the wall. The staff was very friendly. There was the regular tasting and their reserve tasting. We opted for the $25 reserve tasting, especially since there was an ad in the Wine Country weekly magazine for "2 for 1 tasting." We got to try a bunch of different ones starting with the whites. Their Chardonnay was good, but I didn't care for the Rose of PInot Noir. My favorites were, of course, their Pinot Noirs and their Cabernet Sauvignon. The ones I liked were the Deer Camp and Heirloom Pinot Noir. Between the two, I enjoyed the Deer Camp one more so we bought a bottle of that. The Cabernet was good too. It's definitely one of my favorite wineries for Pinot Noirs. read more

We did the food and wine pairing - let me tell you how amazing this was. The chef did an amazing job on preparing the food (grilled stuffed eggplant with cottage cheese and crushed hazelnut, puff pastry w/rabbit, 12hr slow cooked short rib, and the most amazing bite was the dark chocolate truffle! Sunday in Sonoma. Such a beautiful day to drink wine and relax with friends. Our friend Brett took us to a couple of wineries in the area. He live in Sonoma and works in the wine industry so a lot of tastings were complimentary. You can't beat that! Etude has beautiful grounds the the tasting room was a mixture of very modern with a touch of country. I loved the look of the space. They started us off with a complimentary chardonnay which I just loved. Even bought a bottle. The tasting was great. Some great wines were poured as we relaxed in the patio area. So nice. One that stood out was the 2008 Deer Camp Pinot Noir. Even picked up a bottle of that as well! Wine tasting is such a wonderful and relaxing experience. Etude is one I would recommend coming to, not a huge mass of people and was a very relaxed and causal atmosphere. Loved it. read more

We came to Etude since it was close to Acacia and we wanted to taste more wine from the Carneros region. We didn't have an appointment but we were able to start tasting upon arrival. My husband and I split a $15 tasting and while the wine was pretty good, what we really enjoyed was the ambiance of their tasting room. The back wall behind the tasting bar was lined with wine bottles and there were large windows that allowed for a lot of sunlight. Like other Carneros wineries, the chardonnay was excellent (and I'm not typically a chard fan) and so was the pinot noir. We didn't buy a bottle (they were a little expensive for us) but we would definitely stop here again the next time we're in the area. read more

Arrived at 11:30am as our first stop. I have to say out of the four wineries we hit that day, this was my favorite. I had the $25 reserve tasting and enjoyed every one, especially the $90 pinot and $100 cabs! We were not doing the marathon Napa trip, so being outside under the umbrellaed tables sipping and enjoying at our leisure was great! No one was rushing us to move on to the next wine and it wasn't too hot or too crowded yet. I was so impressed with the wine that I walked away with a few bottles and held the other wines tasted that day to my new Etude standard. read more

Excellent wines and very very knowledgeable staff who taught me how to perceive flavors. A former director from the Westin was excellent as was Charles Copley. He knew my pallet better than me. Prices a bit high at the entry level (especially given inland Sonoma) but if you are interested in excellent service off the beaten path the wines and service is 10x better than Domaine Carneros or V Situi or so many other big places. Worst tasting experience ever. Locked in a room with 8 people who know nothing about wine. Uggg. Bob it's not your fault the experience was bad, you were just following the script. Interesting thought, locking us in a room for over an hour. I kind of like the idea of creating a captive audience. Bad execution. The wines however were fantastic, most may find the price point a bit high. Clearly the skill of the wine maker was showcased in the Cab and Pinot. So after making my own wine and utterly hating it, I knew I needed to go try somebody who knew what they were doing. My girlfriend and I reserved a private tasting, which is usually conducted in groups of 8, but upon arriving we discovered that it would only be us and the sommelier. Panic ensued, as I have no "real" knowledge about wine, and I sat down prepared to be humiliated, pretending to detect hickory notes in the pinot noir. Actually, our guide (Angelo) was incredibly knowledgeable, and taught us everything from the basics of food pairing to the details of micro-climatology. The wine itself was great, the food dishes (small plates of increasingly awesome pairings, including smoked rabbit) were interesting and tasteful, and the environment was beautiful. My daughters and I spent a delightful afternoon sitting on the patio of this lovely winery while tasting some wonderful wines; especially the excellent selection of pinot noirs. We were fortunate to have Gail Summars as our tasting guide and expert. I've been to Napa many times and have some great tours but I learned things from Gail that I have never heard about. Gail was friendly, funny, knowledgeable and honest. Her background as a restaurant owner and wine connoisseur is impressive and she is well connected in the Napa/Sonoma region. This beautiful winery and tasting patio is surrounded by exquisite shrubs, trees and flowering plants. I highly recommend you take the time to visit Etude and ask for Gail! read more

Great wines! The rose and Pinot noirs were a huge hit with our group. The winery is a little bit removed from most of the valley, but worth a trip. The tasting room was large, contemporary, and fresh. When deciding between two of the samples before buying a bottle, our server poured a large second sample of each to help me make the best selection. The server was very well informed about all of the wines. The grounds are pretty, but there's nothing particularly special to do/see there. Parties larger than 6 need to make a reservation. read more

Not sure why this place is rated a bit low, I think it's one of the best wineries in Napa. They have the most diverse and interesting pinot noirs of any Vineyard, and their cabs are amazing. They do a lot of single Vineyard wines that are wonderful for trying together and comparing the differences in the regions flavor profiles. They have a beautiful property, go visit them and have a tasting on the patio, it's well worth it. read more

This place is very pretty and has descent selection of wine however, a worker name Jeannie absolutely left a sour taste in my mouth as I was leaving. *older Caucasian lady with a permanent frown on her face - short hair After being in the winery for a while, it got cold so I decided to step outside & go to my car when she scowled & scolded me that the Patio was closed. I was a bit surprised by her hostility but acknowledged her & continued to the car when she follows me out & now even louder scolds me "Ma'am! I said the patio is closed!". Funny because that's the only way I can get to my car...and I wasn't trying to sit in the patio or anything... I replied "I understand, I'm going to my car" and she just walks away...not even an apology. Really? This is how you treat your visitor? Never will I recommend this place to anyone because no matter how pretty & peaceful this place is and no matter how good the wine is, if you have to end the day by getting yelled at for no reason & go home upset,...it's not worth it at all. There are plenty of other wineries like Cake Bread that carries amazing wine along with a staff like Gina that will make you feel absolutely welcomed. read more

My husband and I stopped by Etude on Sunday. We were asked if we would like to split a $20 tasting and we did so. I began to to pay immediately and the staff person told us not to pay. He said, "The way it usually works out is that you buy wine and I wave the tasting." Of course we said fine. Based on that offer we spent almost $100 on wine. We trustingly (no credit to us) signed the bill and when we got home saw that we were still charged for the tasting. I called the winery and was told by a Manager that the salesman had misspoken. He said, "We don't usually wave the tasting fee unless you spend over $250." We based our decision to buy bottles of wine on the $20 savings we anticipated. I regret that we believed this individual. I don't find the staff nor this business to be honorable. read more

Scheduled a reserve tasting at the Etude tasting room. Very cool place, new, and interesting features showcased from the re model of an old building. The private room was nice and our host Angel, was excellent. Described the wine makers philosohy, terrior of area of grape supply, and some info on the process used at Etude. Tasted five wines one dry pinot rose, two pinot noirs, and two single vineyard cabs from Rutherford & Oakville. My favorite was the $60 pinot noir. Total tasting time was approx one hour. read more

I went to 5 wineries in a row and etude had the best wine that day. The selection was good and the setting was comfy and inviting. I recommend the reserve tasting which comes with 5 different wines for $25. They definitely have good pinot noir here. Thanks to yelp promos, my sister and I got the 2 for 1 deal. Its a decent sized winery, not much of a view but they have a few picnic tables outside to enjoy the fresh air while sipping on quality wine. read more

Etude was established back in the 1980s and is located on Cuttings Wharf Road in the Carneros District. An appointment is not necessary. Regular tastings are $15 for six wines and reserve tastings are $25. Some photos may be seen here: http://bachtobacchus.blogspot.com/2012/08/etude-winery.html Although Etude is best known for their Carneros estate Pinot Noir and their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from sourced grapes, they do have three white wines that should not be overlooked. The 2010 Etude Chardonnay at $32 sees no malolactic conversion. It has a very nice nose and is rather fruit driven with soft melon. It is more round than brisk. The 2011 Pinot Gris 9$26) is even softer with an aroma of honeysuckle and some peach on the palate. Their 2010 Pinot Blanc ($28) with a light nose, is also softer than the more acidic and sometimes austere Alsatian version. It was nice, though, with some citrus on the palate and good balance. I really like Pinot Blancs and applaud Etude for offering this interesting varietal which is not often encountered in Napa Valley. Half of Etude's production is their Pinot Noir, and it is obvious why this is so. We had the 2009 Carneros Estate Pinot Noir that sells for $42, and it was a very nice Pinot. After a light cherry nose, it is followed by a well-balanced presentation that had good tannins and acid and a lovely mouth feel with a long finish. Also quite good was their 2008 Etude Estate Grown GBR blend of 83% Merlot and 17% Malbec that sells for $60. After a very nice aroma this well-balanced wine offered a palate of black cherry. Carneros does not receive enough summer heat for Cabernet Sauvignon to fully ripen, so Etude sources fruit from up-valley for their Cab. The 2007 Etude Cabernet Sauvignon is $85 and is very nice, a classic premium Napa Valley Cab. It is fruit rather than terroir driven, although it is obviously from Napa Valley. With a rich, lush mouthfeel it is more ripe blackberry than cherry on the palate with lovely tannins. It is very drinkable now but should age well. Along with the Pinot Noir, this was our favorite of the tasting. We visited Etude on a rather hot day but it was much cooler in Carneros than up-valley. There is ample parking but be sure to follow the signs and do not exit the same way you drove in. It is all one way through the parking lot. Service was very friendly. We recommend that you visit this winery, but if you are unable to do so, you might want to consider trying their Pinot Noir. read more

What a nice surprise! We happened upon Etude somewhat accidentally and I'm so glad we did. The winery is in Napa, kind of tucked away from most of the others and the vineyard is gorgeous, stretching out around the buildings under the blue sky. You definitely get more of a feel of space here than you do at a lot of the wineries. Their small patio is cozy and overlooks a garden with benches and other tables and chairs to sit and relax. The tasting was wonderful - their wines are very bright and clean. The staff was warm and welcoming Ann's very knowledgeable as well. read more

Made a reservation for their wine and food pairing after a recommendation by a friend. Their staff was incredibly friendly on the phone and in person once we arrived. Although a little ways from our normal stopping grounds, the winery was very pleasant and beautifully landscaped. Susan was extremely knowledgeable and very willing to help teach as we continue our never-ending wine education. The pinots were excellent and I definitely enjoyed the merlot-malbec blend. With that said, the little bit extra you pay for a tasting/bottle is well worth it. I'll be back, for sure. read more

Honestly, I cannot even tell you what I thought of their wines because the server was so rude and condescending that I barely tasted the wine or remembered what they were that she poured. There were 4 of us in our party on Tues, April 3rd and we were all treated horribly. The server was more intent on drying glasses than serving us or answering questions. After our tasting, we wandered outside and walked around the property until a woman approached us and told us we were not allowed to walk around the property because of "hazards". We were walking (2 adults, no children) on a gravel path along the lawn, not sure what was hazardous about that! With all the hundreds of wineries in Napa, I would skip this one! read more

I've done two tastings at Etude. One in a private room with one of their wine educators and the other outside on the patio under an umreblla and the Napa Valley sunshine, both times ... it was a fabulous experience. They make some great pinot noirs and the staff is all very friendly. The grounds are beautiful and the inside of the tasting room is modern and contemporary. Situated in the Carneros region of Napa it's a great stop first thing in the morning as you head up valley or towards the end of the day as you end you day of tasting (it's also good in the middle if you're tasting only in the Carneros region ... which is a good plan too). read more

Met family and friends for the day. First stop was Étude - very close to the airport - in the Carneros AVA. Peaceful outdoor patio - easy going service. Just the right amount to chit chat to learn about the wines - very friendly. Tasted Pinots - each got better as we went up the ladder... Brilliant flavor in each, very unique and elegant.
