As a 75-year-oldy cowboy named Eugene, I spend most of my retirement touring America in my pickup truck with two goals: eat chicken and represent the Pepsi hat community with dignity. I have worn the same Pepsi hat to every restaurant, gas station, casino, gift shop, and livestock auction from Missouri to Montana. It's basically my formal wear. So naturally, when I saw a place called Eugene's, I nearly drove into the parking lot before I finished reading the sign. The young man taking my order immediately complimented my Pepsi hat. Folks, that bought more goodwill than any rewards program ever could. I told him I've worn this hat across 47 states and through three separate back injuries. He nodded like he understood the responsibility. I ordered the hot chicken. Now listen. I love chicken. I don't mean normal people love chicken. I mean if chicken ever ran for president, I'd volunteer for the campaign. This chicken was good. Real good. Crispy, juicy, enough heat to remind me I'm alive but not enough to make me start seeing old ex-boyfriends. The only reason this isn't 5 stars is because I built it up too much in my head. We went to Eugene's for a late Saturday lunch. They have indoor and outdoor dining. The food was out in a timely manner and was hot. It was good enough without being great. Very affordable. BIG negative was the WHOLE place was dirty. Not lunch rush dirty but bring in a cleaning crew overnight dirty. Metal chairs were rusty and generally looked tired. My food was fresh and didn't take long. Although the fries kind of needed a little salt. I requested bbq sauce and they were out. They gave me 4 ranch dipping sauces.... I ordered the 6 wing meal and added an extra side. I paid the extra $1 to have all flats which I'm glad they had this as an option. The chicken: I ordered mild and it was seasoned and fried perfectly. They make their own in house dressings for you to dip the wings in and I had the blue cheese. The coating on the chicken is crisp and the meat was juicy. The Collard Greens: seasoned just right with a little kick of hotness. I wish there weren't as many stems in them, but I could look past that because of the flavor. The sautéed corn: HOLY HOLY this was the best part of my meal. You can tell that the corn was cut fresh off of the cob. It was sweet, buttery, seasoned and sautéed to perfection. I only wished they had this in a large portion, or that I would've ordered 2 servings of it. I highly suggest this as your side if you love corn. The pick up process at this buzzy spot that serves Nashville-style hot chicken was super smooth. We literally parked, walked over, grabbed our labeled food pack, and were back in our car within a minute. While I've been told that some of the entrees come glossy and sauced, my Quarter Dark fried bird was equipped with a dry spice rub. It was super tasty, with juicy, soft meat inside a thin battered crust. I got the second spiciest option, but it was more lip-numbing than actually fiery -- if you have a respectable spice tolerance, you can easily go for the highest setting. The flavor of the chicken was pleasantly sweet, with lots of brown sugar to go with the pepper and chili. The white bread underneath absorbs some of that lovely spicy oil and seasoning. Only downsides were that the crust was a tad bit soggy and didn't stay adhered to the chicken, though this may have been our fault for letting it sit for about 15 mins before eating. The fried okra was decent, but we weren't a huge fan of the fries. The Mac n cheese was slightly sweet, but I enjoyed the savory, creamy side. Eugene's gets a thumbs up from this out-of-towner. Next time, I plan to get the spiciest sauce and also probably do the half bird since I found myself craving more when I had finished. read more

I don't think it was my best experience eating chicken, which was expected from other reviews and recommendations, but it still was a great value for my money. Again, the food was good, I just have personal preferences when it comes to chicken. The chicken breading could have been a little crispier and the fries could have used more salt. If you really like sauces when eating fried chicken, I think you would love Eugene's! Since we were at the night market, the line and wait was slightly more lengthy than desired. What can I say about the Nashville Native doing it Big in Birmingham?? This place is amazing, simple, no need for frills, just hot chicken done right. When I have to stand in line, to me that means it's worth the wait. To be honest; I loovvedd my chicken and waffles, the waffles were light, buttery, with the perfect texture! When it comes to hot stuff I am a baby, so the mild was perfect for me. The fact that I can enjoy a date night on a patio, eating chicken and waffles, and drinking a cold beer was great. Eugene's was just what the doctor ordered. While standing in line, I met a sort-of local (lives about 20 miles away). He told me that they come to Birmingham at least a couple times a month--just for the chicken. He gave me some tips on ordering, which were supplemented by recommendations from the staff at the counter. I had the southern chicken tenders with corn and banana pudding. Everything tasted wonderful, and my friends commented on how much they liked their meals. I had the jumbo chicken wings (mild), mac n' cheese, corn and collards. The spiciness of the mild was just right for me with the Alabama sauce. The wings were crunchy and juicy. The corn is fresh and cut from the cob and had great flavor. The mac n' cheese is creamy, not grainy at all. I could eat a bucket of it. Collards had a lot of flavor. Then head out and nothing is good about this. Greasy and overly spiced, ordered mild, and comes so hot it's inedible, heartburn city! Ordered fries, get fried pickled okra, ordered Bleu cheese dip, get nothing, ordered side potato salad, get nothing. Best hot chicken in town - hands down. We used Waitr to order pick-up online on a Friday night -- the ordering process was seamless, the wait time was reasonable and the food was mindblowingly good. I got grilled tenders in Damn Hot spice and it was the perfect flavorful level of spice without being painful. The chicken was buttery tender and the grilled option is light enough (no excess grease) that I could feel good about eating this. The Mac n' Cheese was a creamy indulgence & the banana pudding was fluffy ambrosia. Service is always kind & prompt - they stay mega busy but always treat their customers with kindness. There was no heat whatsoever to say the least and when I asked for a side of something hotter, I was told "we don't give out sides of sauce"...really. The cole slaw was too sweet. The banana pudding was OK, but the local IPA got me through the dining experience. The waffles were actually pretty good and cooked nicely. I would have liked for the chicken to be seasoned and coated better in sauce. Never have I experienced asking for a side of sauce and in essence be told no. Therefore, the customer service and atmosphere, left much to be desired. Eugene's May hit the mark for some, certainly not me. For what it's worth, anyone wanting a superior hot chicken experience (quality, atmosphere, customer service)...hands down, cut to the chase and go to Hattie B's.
