I have had Eugenes at work for an employee luncheon and had been craving it ever since. I arrived on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't packed but it was steady! Waited about 5-7 mins to order. I started with the fish sandwich the heat level I chose was hot with lemon pepper and let me tell you. It was one of the best fish sandwiches I ever had. The filet was huge! Seasoned to perfection. The two sides I had were the deviled eggs and collard greens highly recommended.I also had a single breast hot with lemon pepper as well. I saw they had this brick and mortar and we decided to try them. One of the best decisions ever! I had thier strips hot,my brother had a quarter dark with collards and okra. His lady had the jumbo wings. The wings were massive and so good. Those collards we couldn't get enough of them. The okra had a tempura type fry and was whole okra. Different but in a good way. The spices they used was just right. Had the heat but not overbearing. Finding the place is tricky due to construction but so worth it!!! Thiers a little restaurant area on the backside of where they are located. Hopefully a native to the Ham will post the name of that area. Pull past that area and head towards the construction. Absolutely loving the new store front. It's super convenient in the Uptown district which is another plus for me. Since this is a store front the menu has extended from what we're used to on the food truck. The space for dining is very limited & can get quite hot in there from that good ole chicken frying so be warned. Still the same great hot chicken as usual. I'm disappointed that when I got back to my hotel room; my collards were missing. Yes I could have called, and walked back, but I shouldn't have had to, and I'm hungry and ready to eat. I initially ordered a quarter white w/ waffles, but at 5:00 pm on a Friday they were out :(; Then asked about an Angry Orchard, but were out. Went to the ladies restroom, and yes -there was no toilet paper. Needless to say my first Eugene's experience has been disappointing! EDIT!!!! I've added a star, and will give Eugenes another try the next time I'm in Birmingham. Friday I paid with credit, and had my receipt emailed to me. We've been twice this week and gotten the same thing both times: quarter chicken dark meat with baked potato salad and Cole slaw (corn isn't available right now) and not only is the chicken hot, fresh and crisp to perfection, the sauces and sides are delicious which just top it off. I never realized how incredible fried chicken was until I visited Eugene's. On my first visit, I made the mistake of ordering nothing and simply mooching off of my friend's meals. I simply couldn't comprehend that a restaurant in such a nonchalant part of town would have absolutely world class food. However, I came back today, and got actual fried chicken. I was blown away. Positively wonderful. Specifically, I ordered the chicken tenders and it was the best friend chicken I'd ever had. The wait was virtually nonexistent, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I finished my entire meal, including every single crumb. The fries accompanying my meal were astronomical. Having tried the original Nashville hot chicken (KFC in Anniston, AL) I guess I went in with my expectations a little high. This I guess is a restaurant centered around trying to mimic the best thing on KFCs menu. It's an interesting gimmick but it doesn't quite translate into a great place to eat. KFC does it better, but you can't blame that on this place. It's hard to top the original. Anyway KFC of course also has other stuff if you're not in the mood for hot chicken. This is the best fried chicken restaurant in Birmingham. It competes with the best hot chicken restaurants in Nashville and blows away Hattie B's local outlet. I prefer the traditional wings, dark meat, and white meat in that order. The tenders a fine as well, but you really need skin to experience hot chicken. Hot chicken is best eaten right at the limit of the spiciness level you can handle. Your head should be sweating by the end of your meal. People who eat spicy food often can get the Hot Damn, but most locals will get some head sweat from just the Hot. Don't even think about ordering fish, sandwiches, or chicken and waffles. That's not what this restaurant is for, and you can get better versions of those items elsewhere. The sides range from average (fries) to poor (corn), but again: you are here for the chicken. Not the sides. Other than the non-core menu and sides, the one downside is that they can be inconsistent. Fried chicken needs to be cooked to order, and I've had a couple of visits where mine must have been sitting out for a while before I arrived. So why the five star review when half the menu, most of the side, and even the occasional hot chicken dish is average at best? Because on a good day, Eugene's Hot Chicken is the best cheap food in the city. read more

We loved this place! We're in Birmingham for the weekend and staying at the Westin -- this place was a short walk around the corner. It is tiny and not very fancy. But we ordered the chicken tender sandwich (hot) with fries and the sautéed corn (very good) and loved the food! This is some of the best chicken that has ever entered my mouth. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. I get Hot Jumbo Tenders with Baked Potato Salad. It's not a buffalo sauce. It's more of a sweet spice with a kick. ITS DELICIOUS. It comes on a piece of white bread and the sweet hot chicken flavorfulness soaks into the bread-YUM. Plus the baked potato salad is sooooo good. I've been to the brick and mortar twice and the food is incredible. However both times the service seamed slow for no apparent reason. Tonight I had to wait over 40 minutes for a popcorn chicken basket and a chicken sandwich. Several customers were getting irritated including me. I think the kitchen needs some serious supervision.
