Recently acquired a set of matching danish solid wood nightstands that are just beautiful and paid much less for the real deal in comparison to the knock-offs I had been looking at - like almost half the price less. I was expecting to pay much more for real wood and true vintage, the prices are very reasonable by comparison. I want to start off by saying I buy furniture from Vern's all the time, usually from Paul Beers. He…read moreis an excellent salesmen and gets things done. Plus, they have excellent in-house financing. However, my last few encounters have left me less than satisfied. First, my office ordered some office furniture (bookcase, desk) from them, and not only did it take way longer than the expected delivery, but we were given the run-around and they failed to return our calls. When the bookcase finally showed up, it was broken on the bottom and they did nothing to compensate us for it. Then my husband and I went in to buy bedroom furniture (mattress, bed frame, nightstands, media chest). We were estimated 4-6 weeks for the furniture, and 2 weeks for the mattress. The mattress showed up at 4 weeks (something to do with 'it was scheduled to be on the truck but it wasn't there when it showed up'). We are still waiting on the furniture - two months later! I understand that not everything goes as smoothly as planned, but on top of the delays, no one returns my phone calls, despite promises to do so. Oh and trust me, I have called and called and called. I have to physically walk-in and demand answers to get anywhere. And I've talked to almost everyone there at this point. Still at a loss at where my furniture is or when it is coming. Oh, and I checked with an internet site about the same furniture (which I've been told takes so long because it comes from Canada), who said they could get it to me in 1 week tops, at half the price! I have been pleasant every time I speak with Vern's, but I'm beginning to think being nice is not going to get me anywhere! I'm ready to cancel my order at this point. 3/12 Update! So I ended up writing a letter to the store manager, and the next day I got a call from him. He was super nice and told me he talked to the freight company personally and that my furniture was in town. He scheduled a delivery right-away. He apologized for all my troubles. When my furniture showed up, the deliver men were amazing. The wrong headboard was sent, but they got on the phone and handled it. Another truck brought the right one shortly after. There was some damage to one of the sides of the bed, which we noted on the delivery slip and will have to deal with the owner about. Otherwise, I am happy with my furniture! I wish the whole thing was not such an ordeal, but A-plus to the owner and A-plus to the deliver folks.

But then he noticed a much older recliner purchased from another store was out of alignment and he got his tools out and fixed it. Best service ever. (I hope he doesn't get in trouble for this) I've seen enough broken down cheap vinyl recliners sitting out on curbs to know that you save money by investing in quality from the get go. My older chair is 15 years old and with Jeff's help, it is in excellent condition. I will have it at least another 15 years. These are expensive, but they are comfortable and they last. I'll be going there when I need to replace my couch.

I bought a top of the line Sealy Stearns and Foster Reserve mattress from Mike at this store…read morethinking that it would live up to it's price of over $5,000 but it did not. I had a week of sleeping on a very uncomfortable mattress and at 130 lbs I left a permanent indentation near the head of the bed which deformed the area. When I called to have it returned, I was told the manager would require a 20% restocking fee! I was able to negotiate a 15% fee although that is still over $800 for a faulty mattress. When I called to let the manager know I had not gotten reciepts and felt the fee was not fair since it was a faulty mattress, he said he laid on the mattress and there was nothing wrong with it.

What should have been a straightforward 300-square-foot hardwood flooring installation turned into…read morea nightmare of poor workmanship, unprofessional behavior, and inadequate repairs. We paid $6,800 expecting a high-quality job, but what we got was an exhausting ordeal. From start to finish, the experience was riddled with issues that we had to identify and report ourselves--problems that any competent professional should have caught immediately. The quality of the work was shockingly bad. On day one, Liquid Nails glue was tracked across the floor, leaving visible shoe prints and hardened globs that were never properly cleaned. Many boards were cracked or splintered, and there uneven seams in the flooring because the lines weren't properly started, according to the contractors who later fixed the job. The subfloor wasn't leveled, causing high and low spots that ultimately required sanding. To make matters worse, the second contractor we hired to fix the mess pointed out that parts of the floor weren't nailed down properly particularly around the walls, and the nailing overall was insufficient. They also found numerous "H-joints," a hallmark of rushed and sloppy workmanship. The baseboards, which we paid $700 to have installed, were no better. They were nailed to drywall instead of studs and could be pulled off with minimal effort. Excessive caulk was used to cover gaps and poorly cut boards, and additional wood putty stains were left behind during their attempts at repairs. The lack of professionalism was equally disappointing. One of the installers loudly berated a younger worker to the point that both we and our neighbors could hear it. It was clear that no quality inspections were being done. We had to point out every issue ourselves, and the repair attempts they made often made things worse instead of better. Despite repeated complaints, the company failed to resolve the issues. The first repair attempt involved replacing one marked board and adjusting a seam, but they didn't clean the Liquid Nails residue, leaving even more wood putty stains in the process. A second installer tried twice to remove the glue but failed both times. In the end, we were offered either a board replacement or a "deep discount." The so-called "deep discount" only covered the cost of repairs and felt like a minimal gesture given the extent of the issues. Our best decision was taking the repairs out of their hands. The professionals who took over spent time explaining all the issues and were shocked at the poor workmanship. I regret not hiring them in the first place because, in the end, we'll never get the finish we initially wanted, and there are issues with the floor we're just going to have to live with. Save yourself the frustration and hire someone else. Arcata ProFloor's lack of quality control, unprofessional behavior, and resistance to taking accountability--offering only the bare minimum to address their mistakes--make them impossible to recommend. What should have been a simple project turned into weeks of stress, nights spent sleeping in my office, and deep disappointment.
