Took my car here because Transmission fluid was drained and I needed brakes done. 2 weeks after the job my car started to make a horrible squeal which the owner Amer told me its probably nothing but trash stuck. This review is long overdue. I am a new Swedish car enthusiast and if anybody knows owning an older Saab or Volvo is very enjoyable but pricey if things start to malfunction or need replacing... I have a 2000 Volvo S70 and I had gotten multiple codes for the variable valve timing. Well those codes can mean that the solenoid is out, the timing hub is faulty, the position sensor is faulty or the ECU is faulty or everything in between. I have been racking my brain on this thing because each of those can get pretty pricey if I replace them all. I got a diagnosis from a place that said it might be my timing hub and they wanted to charge me over $500. so I started looking for other place that could give me a second opinion. That is when I found SWEDISH AUTO TECH.. Mike told me to bring the car in and he would check it out. I brought the car in and in less than 10 minutes Mike diagnosed the problem as a VVT Solenoid issue... I got the solenoid replaced and I have not had any check engine light, or codes popup.. Mike and his crew are very professional and at the same time feel like old friends you haven't seen in awhile. It feels good to be able to rely on an honest and friendly mechanic instead of someone that just wants your business. Mike is very knowledgeable and in talking to him I have learned alot of things about Volvo and their maintenance. I also have a Volvo 850 turbo and I would get oil changes from those $19.99 places. The last place that I want to get an oil change from was Jiffy Lube. Jiffy Lube tightened my oil drain plug so much that the washer was flush with the head. I myself and a buddy tried to take it off but with no use that thing seemed like it was welded on. I took my 850 to Mike at Swedish Auto Tech again and literally within 2 minutes Mike had the drain plug out. I swear Mike and his mechanics got awesome Swedish mojo. I bought the Groupon for this place to get an oil change. I didn't even make it to the shop to get an oil change because I was refused serviceover the phone. I drive a Mitsubishi that is RECOMMENDED to have FULL SYNTHETIC oil, but NOT REQUIRED. These losers at this shop just try to get people to buy a Groupon and then upsell by telling lies that my car can't take anything other than what their fancy little computer says. First of all I'm surprised I'm the first one leaving a review for Swedish Auto tech. Anyways, I was quoted $800 at the stealership and was like "da hell with that". So I did my research and I'm very skeptical on mechanic I want fixing my car, since it was my first SAAB and I decided to find the SAAB specialist and picked one with allot of experience. The first time I contacted Mike, my car was making all kinds of noise coming from the engine compartment. It took him less then 5 minutes by just listening to the car as if the car spoke to him to diagnose the problem and less than 30minutes to fix. I also was charged 1/4 less than the quoted stealership. He also explained that these cars need good care and will last for a long time, if you use the right oil etc..... I'm also saving up some money since he also does performance tuning on those cars and one of my goals is to reach at least stage 4 on the 9-5 Aero I have. read more

My most recent visit involved the fabrication and installation of a 3inch exhaust system, my 2002 9-3 now sounds and performs like it should. All I have to say is wowwwwww. I usually don't leave reviews. These guys definitely know what they're talking about. I recently moved back to San Diego from Florida. I shipped my 2007 Saab 9-3. I couldn't start my car on Thursday out of nowhere. I got a stability control failure, contact dealer. I was terrified at the possible cost of repairs. Especially since Saab is no longer in business and general motors are kinda weird about service for these cars. I dropped my car off to Mike and his team of knowledgeable certified mechanics. They did a complete computer diagnostics and had to replace a new relay that was causing the car from starting. The quoted price was way cheaper than there price I actually paid. I was in and out less that 2 hours. And a very very happy camper. If you have a Saab, or Volvo take it to Mike. He is honest and more than fair on price and don't give you Bullshit. I'm going to get my car serviced here for now on. In fact I'm getting a stage 1 tune for my beloved Saab this Thursday. read more

Hello, I've only ever reviewed one other company on Yelp before, a place that lied to me about pricing for an oil change after I called in advance. I mention this because it gives some context as to how unlikely I am to make frivolous reviews. I usually don't consider it worth my time considering how often they can be faked/paid for. In 2018 was the first time I visited this shop with my '03 Volvo S80, I had recently moved to the area and was looking for a European auto shop to diagnose a rattling noise and an oil leak. Having only recently received the Volvo from my grandma who was no longer fit to drive, I was weary about which shop to choose because Volvo parts and labor are so expensive and it's often quite easy for a mechanic to take advantage of the mechanically less inclined like myself. I came into this shop for the first time and Amir was very polite and friendly. He went out of his way to explain what work he was going to do and how the mechanics behind it functioned. I hesitated to sign onto the relatively expensive fix until I had done my own research on the average price of parts and labor. Amir provided me his own personal phone number if I had any questions. I found what I thought were the same parts online for signficantly cheaper than he had quoted me and I texted him to confirm I was looking at the correct type of parts. I wasn't. After he sent me a link to the correct parts he would be replacing, and after doing more research myself, I confirmed that the price he quoted me was fair, keeping in mind that he would be paying a bit more from his supplier than someone who buys the parts themselves. This would be the case for any mechanic who isn't a personal friend giving me a bro deal of a lifetime. Long story short, he gave me his personal phone number and let me nag him at home when he was off the clock with my mistaken attempts to identify cheaper parts and was polite and patient despite this. He agreed to take pictures of the timing belt I was having replaced and provide them to me. This was after I learned my grandma had supposedly replaced it not long prior and it seemed unlikely it had degraded so much already. On a separate occassion, he showed me the broken parts of my suspension that were replaced, how poorly they worked when broken and how a properly functioning version should operate. He has consistently went out of his way to offer me alternative options that might save me money and was always very upfront, honest and genuine. Since Volvos are so expensive I'm currently debating whether I want to sell mine and get a cheap Honda/Toyota, but should I decide to keep it then I will most definitely keep coming to Amir for all my auto repairs. Full disclosure he did ask me to review him after he finished the work on my last problem, and I thought he definitely deserved it so here we are. Thanks Amir! read more

Brought my Volvo here for repairs. Mike suggested that I should also replace the battery. That night, the "new" battery died on me. I had AAA roadside come and the battery couldn't even retain a charge. I got a new battery from them and took the old "new" battery back to Mike. He blamed the battery on someone else and tried to avoid giving me a refund. When he finally wrote me a check, he tried to refund me for just the cost of the battery without tax or the labor fee. In the end he still shorted me on the refund. You responded to this post by saying you could have screwed me more by replacing the battery instead of a refund. How was I supposed to get the car to you when the battery could not hold a charge? I called your shop but it was past hours on a Friday. Were you going to magically bring and install a new battery as quickly as you respond to bad yelp reviews? Would you have paid for my tow? read more

Took my Saab here and got partially wrong diagnosis. They said the cassette was malfunctioning although if you know Saab 93 it should have given a code. Long story short, I took it to the other Saab guy on Pacific HWY and no cassette issue was found. He tried to address the issue that was a sensor problem. It partially fixed the problem, I had to drop the car in again and it was all tackled for much less than the price of the cassette.The cassette is like $500. I think these guys may be good for Volvos etc. but this time around I got the car fixed elsewhere and saved. The other guy at P HWY charges $20 less for diagnosis and seem to be a mostly Saab facility. No bells and whistles but overall reliable and less pricy. read more

Very disappointed. Brought in my Saab based on other highly positive reviews, but problems remained unfixed and undiagnosed. Didn't make it back to the interstate before I noticed repairs weren't made correctly. 3 attempts later, the car still didn't work/handle correctly. After nearly $3k in repair work, old problems remained and they wanted more $ to fix a problem that wasn't there when I brought it in. Went somewhere else to get the repairs finished and new problems fixed and the car's been running like a champ ever since! Contrary to Swedish Auto Tech's claims about my prior review, I'm not a competitor, just a disappointed customer from 2014 that felt the need to share my disappointment. read more

I took my 2012 Volvo XC60 R-design to Swedish Auto Tech for repair on April 29th 2016. I found the car to have low compression on the #2 cylinder and an engine Code for Misfire in the #2 cylinder. My car was at the shop for a few days for them to diagnose the problem. On May 3rd, the shop let me know that they also diagnosed the car to have low compression on the #2 cylinder. I was given a quote for $4,217 to rebuild the head or $7,500 for an engine replacement. I asked for their professional opinion and was told that rebuilding the head would be the best option, especially because of the price difference. I was OK with either option. At that time I gave a $2,000 deposit to cover the cost of machining the head. The vehicle was there for 3 weeks. I was contacted and informed they were having issues getting the correct parts and it would take a little longer. One week later on May 31st, I was contacted and told that my car would be ready for a test drive the following day and be ready around noon. I called on June 1st around noon and inquired about my car. I was told that it had broken down and needed to be towed back. I was also informed that I now owed $4,300. I asked if that included my $2,000 deposit and was told it did not. Total cost came out to $6,300, because of parts that the shop did know they needed and an $890 for machining the head, which was not on the original estimate. The extra charges would have pushed my wife and I to choose the engine replacement, especially because the price difference would have been minimal. Furthermore, when I asked if they had done a compression check before the test drive, they had. It tested at 105 psi instead of 140-150psi, as well as having intermittent misfire codes. So they knowingly took the car on a test drive with compression at 72% of optimal operating pressure and engine error codes. Their reasoning for the test drive, ...sometimes the issues work themselves out on a test drive.... At no point was I contacted about the increase in cost, nor was I asked for authorization to continue, which is required per California Law; Division 3, Chapter 20.3, Article 3, Section 9884.9. I then stated that I would not be paying for the repairs because I would have gone with the engine replacement instead of the rebuild had I known about the increase in cost, as well I was not going to pay for double labor on fixing my car because of their misdiagnosis of the issue. The manager tried negotiating by lowering the amount owed where I would not have to pay for parts, only the labor, with a total cost $3,800. However, my car was still not repaired. At this time I requested 2 quotes; 1) cylinder rebuild, 2) engine replacement. I told the manager I was not going to be paying for double labor that didn't fix my vehicle, and requested my $2,000 deposit back or be put towards further repairs, which he did not agree to. The manager stated he would be contacting the Bureau of Automotive Repair for advice. The following day on June 2nd I filled a complaint with the Bureau. On June 10th I was informed that I was being charged $45/day for storage, starting from June 3rd, until I paid all outstanding debts on the first quote of $4,217. I was never contacted before that, informing myself that our business relationship had ended and quotes were not going to be provided. On June 16th the caseworker from the Bureau informed me that he had advised the manager that he should refund my deposit and return the car without charge. I picked up my car the following day on June 17th and it was covered in oil from the June 1st test drive. I ended up taking my car to another repair facility and within 4 hours they had discovered that the engine had a rod knock and it was advisable to replace the engine instead of a rebuilding it. This automotive repair shop broke California Law, misdiagnosed the problem, was unwilling to come to an amicable resolution, and expected to be compensated for work that left my vehicle in worse condition then when I dropped it off a month prior. I still have not received my $2,000 deposit, and had to pay more to have it towed to another repair location. read more

This mechanic shop is my favorite! They get the job done on time. Prices are very reasonable. High Customer service friendly, and nice. Before they start on anything they ask the customer if its okay to touch a place in the car, and they tell you everything that is wrong with it. And if they find anything else with your car afterwards they will tell you ASAP. Very honest, they will never pressure you to do something, and if you cant afford the price they're asking they can help you out too. Thats what happened with me, got my car there wanted an oil change, they did it. Found some leaks and some problems with my engine, they informed me at the same time, my car needed a smog check and I got it done. It was a wonderful experience with them. read more
