There are several small shops that all share the same parking. Curtis and Matt are straightforward dudes (and yes, Curtis *WILL* call you dude), that want to do good work, and talk you through what they're about. For example, they'll give you a second opinion on any auto work that one of "the other guys" over quote you for, and they'll talk you OUT of auto work you don't need. Thanks for not charging me for a mistake I made on my behalf that I was clueless about. My wife and I have owned 6 used Mercedes over the past 15 years. We buy 'em used and expect to repair them once a year and own them about 4- 5 years each. As such, we always seem to be looking for a good, honest mechanic who doesn't see dollar signs when the European brand rolls up. I needed a brake job. I brought the car in and Jimmy droped me off at work. Two hours later, he picked me up, quoted me for the job, and explained that he couldn't do the work until the next day (he had to order the parts). The next morning, I brought the car in, he dropped me off at work, did everything he said he would do, picked me up at work, drove back to the shop, put the car on his lift, and explained work which would eventually need to be addressed. He was professional and gave me an honest assessment of the potential problem without using scare tactics to get more money out of me. JImmy presented a bill which was 5% lower than the estimate, I paid it, we told a few jokes to one another, and I left, Then, I drove my car. Oh boy did I drive my car. For the past year, I've driven this car tentatively because I knew something wasn't right. Last Fall, I spent $1100 on front end work (even though I asked about the brakes) and have still driven this car cautiously. The last mechanic sold me a bill of goods. I took my car in after having my best friend research "best car shop in San Diego" & that indeed it was. From the moment I stepped foot in the door I got a very calming and trustworthy feeling. I told him(Jimmy) specifically what was going on & the issues I was having while expressing that I was trying to avoid breaking the bank. I knew when I brought the car in that I needed new sensors and that the car wasn't driving the way that it should. About an hour after dropping my car off I received a text and Jimmy told me everything he looked at and what specifically needed to be done. He kept me updated the entire time, gave me options on what I could do, and always looked for the best prices on the parts he needed. On top of that, he did cosmetic work for me, got it smogged, and checked the alignment at his partner shop next door, and watched the car for me until I was able to pick it up which was something he didn't need to do. Taking a shitty car to the mechanic is always the worst. Every time I take my 95 Escort to get an oil change, it's like bringing a 95 year old woman into the dentist and having the dentist be like "HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT INVISALIGN? IT COULD IMPROVE THE LOOK OF HER TEETH FOR 10... MAYBE 20 YEARS!" And you're like, "thanks, Doc, but I would appreciate if you just scraped the beef stew remnants from her 3 teeth so she doesn't have bad breath when she dies later today in my guest bed. That would be great." However, my experience at Pit Stop in Kearny Mesa was, unbelievably, GREAT. It started with an unbeatable Yelp Deal for an oil change and 60 point inspection for $33. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, honest, and fast, and didn't try and push anything unnecessary on my little rickety death-wagon. They quoted me great prices on the things I SHOULD get soon, but were totally straight-forward about everything. I know, it's shocking. Plus they had a great waiting room with a huge TV, Wi-fi, coffee, and seating that didn't look salvaged from a Tijuana strip club. Update: Yelp removed my original post because the owner of the business complained about my negative review. Yelp claims that I violated their terms of use in "disclosing private information". Could be because I used a person's full name but they're never specific are they? That's odd though because that information isn't exactly private. Anyway, I've removed all identifying information of the people involved to protect their identities. *We'll call him "MD" from now on. Like another reviewer here says, never again. Never again will this establishment get my business or that of anyone I know. Zero stars, but you know the deal, Yelp doesn't allow it. My wife and I have taken our car there three times now to have the oil changed and every single time we have had an issue with the service manager telling the mechanic to put the wrong oil in our car. This latest incident was the last straw. My wife brought the car in for her appointment and dealt with *MD. Because of our previous oil change issues at this shop she was very specific and told him up front that our car (an old 2000 Mercedes) requires 0w40 Mobil 1 full synthetic oil. Well he obviously didn't listen to what she told him and they ended up putting the wrong oil in our car. Wait, it gets worse. My wife calls me from the shop and asks me to speak with MD to straighten this out. I ask why they put the wrong oil into our car. He says that they always put that oil in Mercedes. That's not what my wife asked you to do. Out of excuses, MD then proceeds to tell me that my wife lied and did not tell him up front that our car needed a specific oil. Wow, so you're telling me that my wife is a liar? I don't think so MD. After that, he proceeds to get in a shouting match with my wife while I'm still on the phone. Not good customer service MD. Still, I'm willing to give him a chance to make things right. MD, I say over the phone, I need you to drain out the bad oil from our car and refill it with the correct weight oil like we requested. No deal says MD, we don't carry that oil and I have to go out and get it and there is an additional charge that you'll have to pay. Say what? You want us to pay extra for your mistake? I don't think so MD. Quite frustrating. And I know what you're thinking, why didn't they just leave and not come back after the second bad oil change? We dealt with a very sincere and honest (unlike MD) service manager there "PK" (we'll call him), who convinced us to give them another chance and come back. We did and obviously it didn't work out at all. What also strikes me as funny/ tragic (you pick which) is that they have a computer system, with your name and your car's information in a little database. All they have to do is make a very short notation on your car to say, "needs 0w40 Mobil 1" and none of this unpleasantness would happen. We ended up going to a competitor around the corner on Convoy the next day and had them change the oil for us (after we went out and bought the correct oil ourselves). " Who's the interior decorator here"? That was really my very first thought. 2nd thought, "which cleaning provider do they use?" Not at all what I expected when I walked in. The exterior is definitely deceiving. It's what you would expect for a mechanic yard (less the garbage). But the inside office area was welcoming and Tony offered us a fresh cup of coffee and awesome service! After explaining the issues I was having and what I was certain the issue was. It was advised of an underlying issue. Grrrreat, they want more money too?!! The attitude and threat to take my business elsewhere was quickly approaching.. Turns out, The diva didn't need to come out, not at all. As Tony explained to me the issues, work needed and the cost, I ended up paying less for the transmission and emissions issues I was having, than I would have paid for just the transmission, had I gone to either of the 2 places I received quotes from. Phhewwww! Affordable, professional, efficient and honest. It's not very often you can use those words when describing a mechanic shop. Not that I want to go to the Pit Stop anytime soon. As a woman in her mid 30s, I have been taken advantage of by auto mechanics before, and I never know when I have "been had", or treated with honesty. Thanks to the good people at The Pit Stop, my worries of this nature have stopped. My car was over-heating on the freeway, so I took the next exit and pulled into a Pep Boys. They directed me to The Pit Stop just up the road. After explaining my car's symptoms to Justin (one of the owners) he told me it could be as simple as a damaged hose, or a more expensive problem like a head gasket. After checking out my car he gave me the good news that it was just a hose and they had the part delivered right away and fixed my car all within an hour's time. It would have been very easy for these folks to charge me more, and make up fictional problems, but they were upfront, and honest. One of the other owners even checked up on me a few times to make sure I was okay. They went above and beyond, and were incredibly friendly. Justin even offered to put me in touch with a gentleman who does auto body repair at a fraction of the cost that body shops charge. They were keen to all my needs and concerns. From now on I will take my car to these guys. They do good work, are honest, go out of their way for their customers, and they have great pricing. read more

Never, ever, ever again. I called twice after purchasing a Yelp deal to arrange an appointment. Twice I was put on hold. The first time, it was for an hour and eleven minutes. I hung up. The second time, it was for fifteen minutes. I hung up. I was finally able to reach someone and got my eleventy-point inspection and my oil changed. Long story short, they didn't tell me they did an inspection; if they did, they didn't tell me the results. They didn't change or top off any of my fluids other than oil (I know, because I had no windshield wiper fluid before or after my reservation), and their service caused a leak because the oil filter was not screwed on tightly, thereby causing the oil to leak all over my engine and my car to smell of smoke until I was able to figure out the problem. Oh yeah, and when I pointed out that I had an oil leak after having my car serviced here? Not even an empathetic "oh that sounds awful, do you mind if we take a look at it?" If I delivered poor customer service like that, no one would ever come to my shop. Hint, hint. read more

Short version of my review, with literally no exaggeration: I have never, in my life, experienced such a low level of customer service, ineptness, callousness, and complete disregard of compassion and basic customer satisfaction. Unless you are a sadist who thrives on being treated like a rat caught in a trap I highly recommend staying away from the Pit Stop Auto Repair in Clairemont at all costs. Here is exactly what happened, again with no exaggeration on my part. On Tuesday I make an appointment to drop my car off on Friday at 11am to get several repairs done. When Friday comes I drop my car off, was given an estimate of $226.21 and was told my car would be done in three hours. Having no wear to go I killed time at the local Starbucks and returned to the Pit Stop three and a half hours later. The manager and/or owner informed me that he had lost my keys to my car. Hoping that this happened after my repairs and not before I ask "So is my car finished?" because remember it has been 3.5 hours. "How could we? We don't know where the keys are." So I respond, "Why didn't you look for them?" "Oh it's been really busy." Remember, 3.5 hours have gone by. "Why didn't you call me?" "Like I said, it's been busy." Three and a half hours. THREE AND A HALF HOURS. Really? The best thing you can come up with is it has been too busy to find my keys? He can't find five minutes in a 210 minute span to look for his customer's keys? Is my time so worthless to you that you cannot show any sort of compassion for the aggravation you are putting me through? Where are the solutions, where are the "Oh I am so sorry! Let me fix this for you right away" All I get is "Even if we knew where they were there are no lifts available." What the heck is an appointment for then which I made FOUR days earlier! I then demand my keys so I can leave and he still says he can't give them to me because he does not know where they are. I say "Go F#*$#ing find them then." He says "Poof, here are your keys." As he points to an empty counter and then starts helping someone else! Even the other gentleman in the lobby says to me "I'd be furious too." THREE AND A HALF HOURS. Wasted. Nothing offered but a joke "Poof, here are you keys." More like "Poof, 3.5 hours you'll never get back." Well, I know some magic tricks to mister. "Avrah KaDabra, there goes all of my current and future business." Oh and, "Alakazam, there goes all the business of all the smart Yelper's reading this." Seriously, THREE AND A HALF HOURS and all I got out of it was mockery from the man in charge. How would this make you feel? I bought a yelp deal for some oil changes here. They seemed like nice enough people, and judging form the yelp reviews I figured I might finally have them fix up my broken brake sensor (basically, I had to jam a pen into my shifter to change gears off of parking because the sensor that I was stepping on my brakes broke). The oil change went fine, so I decided to ask if they could fix the sensor. I payed around $45 to have them check it out. An 1-1.5 hours later (I've been waiting in the lobby), they tell me "I'm sorry to say this bro, but this right here is broken. Here let me show you." The guy has been really nice so far, and he walks me over to my car and shows me what he claimed was broken. When we get back to the front desk, he says "I hate to say this...but this part can only be bought from Nissan. It's $450, and another $45 for installation." I didn't have the money for this part, but I was thankful for the (seemingly) nice service. I told him I'd have to think about it and I lived with manually overriding my gear shifter for another 2 months. One day, I was lucky enough that my friend's uncle (who owns his own car repair shop) happened to be with us and offered to take a look. He immediately guessed what it would be just from my description, and said "Bring it in to my shop next monday, this shouldn't be bad at all". Guess how much it cost him for the parts? $45. 90% less than Pit Stop claimed it would be for parts. He said (word for word), "I don't know if the people who quoted you were scammers, or just dumb*sses. Only a tiny part of that needed to be replaced, not the whole thing." I'm so sketched out by this place, I won't be using the rest of my oil changes that I bought from a yelp deal. read more

I was relieved to know that I was in good hands, however I was disappointed when I went back to the shop. Jimmy replaced the radiator, however he didn't fix the grill. He said his saw machine "broke" and would give me a discount next time I came back. I would have appreciated a phone call to give me an update on my truck instead of having to wait all day. Back when I was a student at UCSD, my '94 Accord was struggling to shepard me around, especially between the long voyage between SD and LA. They did such a great job keeping the old girl running - and for a very fair price - that I now bring my new(er) Accord to them! The staff is friendly, and the wait area is cozy (especially if you like aquariums!). Prior to the fish tank, they used to have free coffee while you waited, but I guess all that coffee is now redirected towards the fish. Ah well. They are normally packed, so you may want to schedule an appointment if you can. The parking lot is super small, which is surprising since the entire area is dedicated to mechanics of various sorts. They will also give you an estimate on how long it takes to do a repair, so you may get a chance to grab a bite to eat from one the restaurants nearby! Also note that it's a little tricky to find. There are two "back to back" alleyways so to speak, so slow down when you're nearby, or you may miss it. read more

I was at my wits end to try to get my now twice-salvaged car a Brake and Light inspection. Hey, it might not be pretty but it works. They did the inspection, it failed (expected), and gave us a list of things-we-need-to-fix. Because my wits had ended, I was ready to throw in the towel and have them to do all repairs. Dude at the front desk said they 'could', but it would be expensive. I could save some cash by getting parts from a junk yard and doing it myself. I was pretty amazed that this guy was honest and up front enough to tell me this, as I typically put mechanics in the same shoe box as lawyers, and bike riders that blow through stop signs. It would have cost many hundreds of dollars in parts and labor, so I took his advice and headed to eBay. A few cheaper parts and self-fixings later, we returned to complete the inspection, where my beaten and bruised car finally passed. And since it was a re-inspection, there was no new charge (normally $90 which seems to be the standard price in San Diego). Props for quick service, honesty, and large screen tv's in the waiting room. read more

Heed the warnings of fake reviews/internet fraud for this location because it's likely a good foretelling of their service. (Or at least take note of when people say that they are reposting because the owner is flagging their negative reviews.) I bought their Groupon deal (similar to the Yelp deal only at $35 instead of $33). Got my oil changed and had them take a look at my brakes because they were squealing like no other. They replaced the front boots and told me that would do the trick. I leave the lot with them still squealing but decided to give it a week for the brakes to "break in". ha. Anyway, after a week , my brakes were still turning heads at every light so I called them, they said they'd take it in. They decided the solution this time would be to replace those "economy" boots with upgraded (higher quality--read: more costly) ones. I've heard this be a good solution for my friends and their cars, so I decided to give it a shot and paid for the new boots. To no avail, my car is still squealing. Third times a charm right? So I had it back again thinking they were really going to try to solve the brake issue once and for all. They resurfaced the rotors. STILL! FREAKIN! SQUEALIN! Seriously, folks, couldn't get it right after the THIRD time? I felt like I was being pretty patient in allowing them to prove that they actually do good work. But all in all, I'm very disappointed with them. No fixing occurred here. Do not go here. READ: DO NOT GO HERE! Also, I have not and will not use the remaining oil changes left on my Groupon deal--that's how bad this place is. ----- In response to the comment left by the Johnny C.: Of course you guys upgraded with no hesitation! I was referred to The Pit Stop by a franchise oil change shop that could not change the oil in my Mini. I was grateful for their reccomendation as they had taken great care of my old car for many years. The Pit Stop "crew" were amazing, not only did they change my oil but when, I asked, gave me an estimate for a couple of maintenance projects I may want to consider for my high mileage vehicle. Mini owners are somewhat limited no competition at the dealership level in San Diego. The Pit Stop bill themselves as "The Dealer Alternative" and from now on they will be just that for this mini-grannie! Great Service, Great Staff and Great Pricing .... hard to beat. Went 4/23: Gave 4 stars, b/c I was under the impression what I had going on with my car was fairly basic and straight forward. Oil Change, brake tune-up (no rotor grinding or pads), and full check-up, lots of mielage. 3 hours later, "thank you for your patience..." was all I got from manager. I was waiting the whole time and missed a business lunch. Their prices are fair and they are honest! Affordable price and Quality service!!! Is a very rare comnination..But you would be suprised to get that at a mechanic shop. I took my 09 Audi A4 for Oil ,Brake Pads and Rotars to be changed .To my suprise the owner suggested resurfacing and it would be fine for couple of months and did the rest that was needed on my car. I would recomend this place to anyone who wants to work with honest and efficient people. read more

After a 3 year hiatus, I'm back! The Pit Stop Auto Repair is a friendly, clean, fast, and honest way of doing business- terms not normally associated with anything relating to the automobile industry. The guys at Pit Stop have done a great job of building a returning clientele, as well as generating new customers. They will never try to 'up-sell' or take advantage of you female owners out there. The most they will do is recommend a service that can be provided by them in the future, and tips on how to make your ride more efficient. To date I have had return service with four personally and family-owned vehicles: ( '98 Nissan Altima, '99 Honda Civic, '05 Volks Jetta, and '10 Lexus ES350). Services rendered were mostly oil changes, maintenance recommendations/diagnostics, and tune-ups. The Yelp deal they had was extremely economical- hopefully they have another one in the near future. Their prices are market-reflective, and in some cases they will match a competitor's coupon or advertisement. More importantly, however, they remember their repeat customers and strive to make your ride more enjoyable without pulling the wool over your eyes. I definitely recommend The Pit Stop for auto servicing regarding the monthly minor maintenance to the major yearly tune-up. Was a bit hesitant going to this place cause the few bad reviews I read were really bad. BUT, they are wicked close to my work and the good reviews just swayed me. I call first because my oil filter is hard to find. They say they have it and they can do my oil change if I get there by 4. I get there at 3:50PM. Dude checks me in, confirms they have my filter, tells me the price and that it will be 45 minutes. First, I'm a bit bummed, gotta hang around for 45 minutes. Then I look out the window and see a sign directly across the parking lot, "10 minute oil changes" UGH... Then I sit down in the suavely decorated lobby and watch the flat screen TV in a leather chair. Then I turn the floor mounted AC towards me and... VOILA! Who cares about a 10 minute oil change?! This lobby rocks! So...less than 45 minutes later I see my car being parked out front and the guys says I'm good to go. Price was EXACTLY as quoted, they were UNDER the time they quoted and NO hard selling on the shit I KNOW I need. Like brakes and a fuel pump. Cool place, I will go back for my brakes and fuel pump. read more
