Apricot honey vanilla cake. Very uneven layers and frosting ratio. Cake was dense and dry. Buttercream frosting was also dry, and crumbly.

I will start off that i am always hesitant to write bad reviews on yelp because i wouldn't want my review to negatively impact a business (especially for the local mom and pop). Growing up, my (immigrant) parents supported me through college by working at a local small restaurant (my dad was a busboy and my mom was a food runner) so i know that businesses don't always have it easy. Anyway, here it goes...... Over the weekend, i (excitedly) picked up a 6 inch apricot/honey buttercream birthday cake here, but things soon went south after the birthday girl cake cut into the cake..... Specifically, -The buttercream frosting was dry, hard, and crumbly (i love buttercream but this was one of the worst ones i've ever had) -The vanilla angel cake was dry, dense, and not moist at all - Cake layers were VERY uneven and cut in varying different sizes (the most uneven layers that i've ever seen) -The ratio of frosting to cake was really off and there was way too much frosting (most likely due to the bakery trying to correct the heavily uneven cake layers). - The decoration of the cake (although still pretty) was quite different from the one presented on the bakery's website Some real life comments that were received from friends and family: "Omg that's crazy. The bottom layer is sooo much larger??" "YO what the *beep* is that???" "AHAHAHAHAHA" "That's not the sort of cake you give to a friend!" =D "You should ask for a refund" "The frosting is so crumbly" "Dang that's a lot of frosting" "The cake is very dense" "What's the name of the place? Need to avoid it like covid 19" "The cake was perfect!" - comment came from the birthday girl. god bless her kindness, compassion, and heart.

I don't know how I've lived in the Greater Portland area for so long without coming to the European Bakery. It's exactly like the bakeries I grew up going to: cases upon cases of pastries and baked goods... and, really, the only thing they're missing is a regular Saturday bean supper special! I feel like it's going to take me many, many visits to figure out everything I love and recommend. For now, I'd say: YAY: The Tiramisu Whoopie Pie really surprised me (it's got a softer texture, but the flavors are all #chefskiss), and the Raspberry Puff Pastries taste exactly like my childhood (they've got the ideal ratio of jam to cream). MEH: The danishes are just okay; the fillings all seem like they might come from a can (I'm sorry if they don't, European Bakery!). NAY: Skip the Peanut Butter Tarts (ours fell apart with one bite; the flavor was underwhelming) and the Eclairs (which often seem deflated). ON MY TO TRY LIST: - Italian lemon cookies - Feta and spinach lunch croissants - Cinnamon buns - Raspberry mocha cakes - Coconut filled cupcakes I'd love to see more vegan or gluten-free options - times are changing, after all - but I understand and appreciate that they're a very traditional bakery!

Lovely staff and delicious goods! I had a bday celebration planned and the team did the most amazing job on the cake just off of a telephone discussion. Also, their raspberry cookies are heaven. This place is a must go!

So yummy we had to take some home!

Good place to try out if you want some European pastries. They also have "traditional" American pastries etc.

Well, I didn't see a tea room, but plenty of pastries. The carrot cake cupcake was awesome. Not too sweet, moist, tasty.

Do not come here expecting to sit at a cafe and eat indoors. There are only a few outdoor tables. This is more of a take out spot. There was a preorder area which had no line seemed like a good option if you want to just drive up and grab your goods without waiting in a long line. The drinks (iced tea/cold brew/hot coffee/tea) are premade and I would say are above average. The pastries we had were unbelievable! Flakey, buttery croissants with simple but punchy flavors. This spot is worth the wait!

After having some of the bread prior to our meals at a few restaurants, we found out the bread is locally sourced at a sister business right around the corner from where ate the night before. There is parking avail for customers in the lot for 30 mins, we prob waited about 20 mins and crossed the threshold into baked goods heaven. There was so much to select from - we got pastries, cookies, pizza and bread - and we pretty much liked everything. Our least favorite was the morning bun with walnuts - we didn't have it right away so that might've been part of the issue. Just note that the bread served at the restaurants aren't available until 2pm - we were leaving that morning so we weren't going wait for it. We opted for other loaves instead and they didn't disappoint. If you want something yummy and fresh - make sure to stop by here before heading out of Portland. I do wish the setup was a bit more conducive to the big crowds as there isn't much space from the front door to the counter but still a fantastic find!

The raisin croissant was great - it was flaky, light, there was a nice simple syrup that created almost a candied undercarriage - this could have also been the sugar that cooked out of the raisins when baking. The croissant didn't exactly have anything particularly standout about it, it just tasted like it was very well executed. Oddly didn't get much of a buttery flavor from this croissant, I also feel like a very small amount of spices could have gone a long way to help pull in some warm undertones for the flavor. If I get back here on another trip, I'll be sure to arrive earlier to get some different options.

Upon entry, you'll see the current offerings in a display to the right, and a view into the kitchen through a window in the left. The friendly staff could not be nicer; zero attitude whatsoever even after winning a prestigious James Beard award. Zero seating, too, unfortunately, other than a few benches outside. -- Chocolate Croissant: A sturdy brown contraption with a crusty exterior and a bready interior. Mine was still warm, with a good crackly bite and hints of wood flavor from the oven. Underneath were strong accents of chocolate. Very good and very different. -- Almond Croissant: A swirl shape along the lines of pain au raisins, but with almonds and almond filling. That filling was nicely understated and natural, complementing while deferring to the still-warm dough. Another example of very good and very different. This place strikes me more as a bread bakery that also bakes pastries than a pastry shop that also bakes bread-- not that there's anything wrong with that. And it's a place that's willing to sacrifice breadth of offerings (at least at any one time) for quality of offerings, and there's nothing wrong with that either. Looking forward to many more visits to get that breadth-- and bread-- over time.
