After dining at Curate last night, we wanted to grab lunch before heading to the airport. The menu here is much more limited, including soup, salads, charcuterie and sandwiches. But the Spanish influence is alive here as well. I started with the Gazpacho soup (chilled tomato and cucumber) and finished with the Bocadillo de canvas fritas (crispy red shrimp, aioli and green Spanish peppers). My wife had the Bocadillo de Jamon (Serrano ham, Manchego cheese and fresh tomato). Both were served on a warm baguette and featured incredible flavor, freshness and texture. We went to sister business Curate and they were on a long wait and suggested La Bodega. We are so glad we made the walk around the corner. The atmosphere was such a good vibe. The music playing in the background was some 80's/90's and added to the vibe. Specialty drinks that we got were amazing. My group tried both gin drinks and raved about them. La Bodega is the perfect spot to enjoy snacks. The tapas are just as good as Curate but there is a limited selection. The cafe part is upstairs with a cool bar with leather round bar stools. We have also enjoyed the jamon sandwiches to go from the downstairs area. We shared the pan con tomate with manchego, melone y jamon, the fried pork belly with the Curate table hot sauce, and the bomba, which was a fried pork ball with 3 sauces. My bestie and I had the most amazing dining experience here. It looks like a little shop/carry out spot when you walk in, but a quick walk upstairs and you're feeling like you're somewhere totally different! Elsie seemed to be a veteran server, with plenty of knowledgeable recommendations (our first time with a Spanish tapas restaurant), asking questions to help us make decisions with all the amazing options on the menu. We learned much later our server had only been here a couple weeks---wow! The training here is top notch! Her knowledge and sweetest demeanor and genuine care that we had a great experience assured us that and more! This incredible restaurant has absolutely outdone themselves. Outside of Spain, I've NEVER had better pintxos (tapas) and perfectly paired wines. We got the La bodega experience (chefs menu) with the wine pairings. I had a party of 4 and we were all extremely impressed with absolutely EVERY bite. We stopped here for brunch on a Saturday and easily found two spots at the bar. The bartender was super friendly and we ordered two mimosas. Our lunches were great. I'll be back for that burger ASAP. I'm already planning my next meal here. Not pictured is the croissant bread pudding with vanilla cream and butterscotch and it's probably not pictured because I got way too excited when it arrived. Thank goodness I don't live closer I would be trying to eat a plate of that bread pudding daily... it's warm and the texture is perfect plus it's the perfect sweetness, not over the top. We chose this bistro for our ladies lunch and drove in from the mountains where we had been motorcycle riding with our husbands! We needed a break from the twisties! Beginning with cocktails, we enjoyed the city vibe and sophistication! Our waiter was professional and knowledgeable, kind, and gracious. We enjoyed the charcuterie, olives and potato chips for starters. Delish! The mains were sandwiches and the Friday special of calamari and lentils. Again, delish! The only disappointment was the "bread" pudding--more like French toast, and partly scorched. Even the waiter pointed out the burnt parts left on the plate (but didn't offer a replacement). I recently visited Asheville after doing some fishing in the mountains. I specifically came in to visit La Bodega and also Curate. Both restaurants exceeded expectations and were an absolute pleasure to explore. I made a late reservation for lunch, 2 pm, and made it just in time. I found a pay parking lot across the street, thankfully. I was greeted as soon as I came in. I took a look at the little downstairs market before heading upstairs to enjoy my lunch. Once upstairs, I was greeted and seated immediately at the bar. I had the whole bar to myself. The bartender that took care of me was amazing. I looked over the menu to see what looked good. I decided to start with a pastry, xuixo. After looking a bit more, I asked if they still offered the tortilla espanola. She informed me they did even though it wasn't on the menu. I also ordered a hamburger as she said it was her favorite menu item. As I waited for my food, the bartender and I discussed the wine and cider list. She let me sample a few until I found some samples I enjoyed. My food came out and it looked amazing. The tortilla had a crisp outside while the inside was still runny. It was truly perfect. The pastry was incredible. It had a flaky crunchy crust while being filled with cream. The hamburger was next level. I am a big burger guy and I was skeptical about this flavor combo, but it was perfectly executed and very flavorful. The potatoes were a perfect side dish. My meal was amazing. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit to La Bodega. The food was top notch as was the wine and service. Everything impressed me and I will certainly be back on my next visit to Asheville. Hate doing this but low marks for unremarkable food. We ordered short rib enpanadas and also a large flat bread. Both were overcooked and lacked flavor. Shocking since Curaté is spectacular IMO. The staff was exemplary and the store all we had hoped. I can see hanging out when in town, but the food quality gives me reason to pause. We came to dinner on Wednesday early evening for a curated dinner for two that we won from our wireless phone reward program. Wednesday is also paella night but that was not on our offering. Actually had been to the same upstairs dining room a few years back when it was the short-lived Nightbell. Bethany and Kate served us. Kate's white wine recommendation was spot on. Polvorete 2021 was the perfect white table wine for this menu. The upstairs dining area is attractive with a large wine/cocktail bar and a variety of seating. Even with 5 patrons at the bar it was quiet. Our selective menu included a glass of sangria, olives, salad, choice of two entrees and choice of a shared dessert. The sangria was tasty but nothing outstanding or unique. The Casa Aperitivo (olives and potato chips) was okay if you like tasty imported Spanish potato chips with your olives. The Ensalada (with gem lettuce, pistachios and other goodies) was well received and thoroughly enjoyed as was the Puplo (octopus) entree. The flavor of the seafood sauce accompanying the octopus was incredible; it complemented the fingerling potatoes and seafood perfectly. Our other entree was the Menestra de Verduras which was a glorified garbanzo bean soup-like dish. The flavors were unique and tasty, the egg on top was creamy. Unfortunately, when sharing these two dishes I encountered a taste dissonance switching between the two entrees. Therefore, we brought the latter home for next-day lunch. Finally we shared a Helado de Queso dessert. Although it was a single serving size, it was a perfect finish to our first dinner at the Bodega. I wish there were a couple more options in the appetizer/entree portion of the curate menu. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our first experience at Bodega. Recommend the salad, octopus (yes, tastes like chicken), and the ice cream dessert. read more

I came in for lunch on a Saturday without a reservation. This casual sandwich and small plates spot has a fun European bar feel with leather armchairs, wooden high tops, and fun art throughout. I had the charcuterie, fried sardines, and a baguette with a cider on tap. The fried sardines were super good and recommend to anyone who likes fish. They were great on the warm toasted baguette. The blue cheese was great and always love a good chorizo on the charcuterie board. 4.5/5 stars! It was a dreary cold Asheville evening in November - and we were craving a cozy spot for dinner. We hadn't had the opportunity to try La Bodega yet, and this seemed to be the time! You walk inside to see a small market area; once you walk upstairs you will find yourself at La Bodega. We were lucky - it was fairly empty and a table was easy to grab without a reservation. It was a Tuesday, so they were having their "Bikinis & Bubbles" special; a rotating trio of bikini-style Spanish sandwiches served with $5 cava. As a carb lover, that sounded good to me! We went with that special, as well as an order of Jamon y pera (mangalica ham, pear, marcona almond) to start, and a ragu (with duck, pork, and foie gras) to split. The Jamon y pera was brought out first...and was, unfortunately, the low-light of the evening. The pear was a bit on the hard/firm side, and the other flavors just didn't bring enough to the plate to help balance everything out. It was a weird salty-peary-situation. The sandwich trio - MAN I could eat these all.the.time! They were delicious. My favorite was a salmon sando, but I know they change on a weekly basis. Up next was the ragu. It felt a little odd not having bread or noodles (carb lover, remember?) to help soak up the ragu, but that didn't stop us from enjoying every rich, creamy bite. At this point it started pouring rain, so what was the responsible thing to do? Order the bread pudding (and a couple of coffees), of course! Now, I'm picky with my bread pudding - I like it sweet but not sickenly so. This was the perfect balance of sweet and tart and moist but not wet....*chef kiss*. Now I am giving this a 4.5/5 stars because honestly, the prices were high for the portion sizes. The food was (mostly) excellent, and the ambiance is super cozy; but I did have a bit of sticker shock when we got our bill (in comparison to the size of our dishes). I will 100% return (especially on a Tuesday for the sandwich trio) but it's a bit on the $$$ end for a regular ol' weeknight (for my budget. Your experience/wallet size my vary). read more

If you haven't heard of Cúrate, you've been under a rock. It's the most coveted Resy in a foodie mecca and yes: its. that. good. The first time we visited was because the legendary Anthony Bourdain (RIP, Chef) was doing an event and chose to host the after party at Chef Katie Button's new-ish tapas hot spot on Biltmore Ave. We never forgot the flavors that night: the cinco jotas that melted in our mouths, the squid ink rossejat, and the clams in white wine. It was magical. The world agreed and now, it's tough if not impossible to get a seat inside Cúrate unless you plan months in advance. If you're like me, and a weekend trip to Asheville is a spontaneous event rather than a pre-planned sojourn: enter LA BODEGA by CÚRATE. Chef Katie Button's outpost on Lexington Ave. giving fans the taste of the Cúrate experience and even some dishes of its own. I LOOOOOVED IT!!!! Market downstairs and Pintxo (Spanish style snacks) & Wine bar upstairs where I found myself on a misty Asheville afternoon... Here's what we tried: *Lardo Montado $9 *house cured and marinated olives $4 *specialty jamón charcuterie w baguette $28 per oz *aromatic G&T cocktail $12 *gran via cocktail $12 *orange wine by the glass $11 (Side Note: the branding on the house hot sauce, the beautifully curated bar ware, the butcher papers and boards with the restaurant's name...every detail here is beyond expectations and didn't go unnoticed!) I can't describe the jamón better than the menu... it's the most delicious charcuterie meat in Spain and you can actually taste the sweet, nutty acorns that the hogs are fed when you try this meat. It is divine. Best I've ever had and I've lived in Florence, Italy which my Italian friends would disown me for saying if they ever read this. Eeek! Shhhhh.... If you want a truly delicious bite and cocktail, go sit at the bar upstairs in La Bodega and take the bartender's recommendations on everything. Try things you wouldn't normally order and be prepared to swoon. I'll come back to this spot every single Asheville getaway I can get! Amazing lunch. Everything we ordered was delicious. The Pulpo a la Gallega, the crema de la cabaza, the ensalada verde. The site says "experience the essence of Spain in the heart of Asheville," I think this is definitely true. It felt for a moment like I had just landed in Barcelona. I so miss Spanish food - was so excited to see there was a casual option from their impossible to get reservations Curate. I had the tortilla española which they heated for me - perfect! We just went for lunch at the new upstairs expansion of La Bodega. It's where Nightbell used to be. I loved the whole concept. The space is beautiful, with different seating options. The menu is not huge but it has many Cúrate favorites. We had the tortilla vaga with duck confit. It's more like a French omelette. It was delicious. We also had a bocadillo de gambas. (Fried shrimp sandwich) and the Plato del dia, which was arroz a la Cubana. Rice with tomato, garlic, bacon, fried banana and fried eggs. Comfort food at its best. To finish up we had an affogato made with turrón ice cream. Service was attentive and friendly. It's open lunch and dinner and I think it's walk in only, which really helps. The upstairs space is the perfect complement for the take out space downstairs. We stocked our fridge through the pandemic with their house made sausages, bacalao, soups, frozen baguettes. They also have lots of great pantry items, like beans, vinegars and oils, tinned fish. read more

poor man's curate okay, I am going to be honest. I actually wanted to go to curate, but couldn't get a reservation. but this place had spots open so we thought we'd check it out. and we were pleasantly surprised! server was super nice and attentive. explained the popular options. we went for torreznos which was excellent. deep fried salty pork belly with the skin intact - what's not to love. also tried the tostas de navajas which tasted like a zesty seafood caesar salad on bread - so good. best dish by far was the costillas which is literally fall of the bone ribs, so juicy n tender. our mistake was ordering the $60 paella special. not bad by any means but did not resemble any paella that I know - rice essentially topped with shrimp, broccolini, and chorizo-spiced tuna patties. where the squid and shellfish at?? would have rather had 3 more orders of the costillas. Ended things with a slice o cheesecake (off menu) which despite its simple form, was incredibly rich and decadant. Great end to meal. sadly, I have never actually been to curate so I cannot actually compare. in my mind, it is better. but I was not displeased with my dining experience here. read more

FINALLY got to try La Bodega by Curate this past Sunday! The building is absolutely gorgeous!! From the adorable Market that welcomes you when you first walk in...to the wide staircase leading you upstairs to the well-appointed dining area. The finishes and décor are comfortable, yet classy. Once seated upstairs the table is already set with a bottle of water, water glasses, menus, etc. Of course Uncle Thom's first order of business is discussing wine with our waiter; by the way, he loved what was suggested! Onto the food...Uncle Thom was like a kid in a candy store when he saw Foie Gras on the menu. If he could have fit his face in the Le Creuset dish, he would have licked it clean (his words, not mine)!! I asked him when was the last time he had Foie Gras, I was surprised that he hasn't had it since the last time he traveled to France. We also had a Short Rib Empanada and the Ensalada. By the way, the Ensalada is a massive portion - it's for sharing! The lemon vinaigrette was the first thing Uncle Thom noticed on the salad; unfortunately, it was too large to finish.
