One of the larger and more well stocked grocers in the area. We live outside the city but we are in the area often so we've tried a few. Good prices on produce and we also picked up a few bottles of my favorite flavor of Peñafiel which I don't find often. Well stocked canned goods, spices, snacks.... I didn't look at the meat and dairy this time or the housewares but based on the rest I would wager that you can likely find what you need. Friendly staff as well. read more

Evergreen Super Market is a cool Mexican grocery store in the Mission. Hawaiian pineapple $2.29 Each! Most others are from Costa Rica or elsewhere so it's neat to get Hawaiian pineapple. Lizano Salsa - I don't know what to do with it, but will find out. Chowhound mentioned they wanted it when in Costa Rica & was looking for it. Caramel spread from Brazil $11.99 - wonder if any good. Saw other Dulce de Leche. No idea how they taste. Mi Peru Aji Amarillo - got a small jar. It's spicy. They sell hot or cold tamales near the cashier. She gets it for you. Salvadorenos $1.59 ea; Peruanos $2.99; Mexicanos $1.59; Corn tamale $1.39. Cool thing I found out one of the cashier is Chinese but lived in Venezuela she can speak Cantonese, Spanish, English! Wow! Evergreen is a unique supermarket wonderland. For quality and hard to find produce items like pre-sliced papaya, starfruit, and rambutans - they've got your covered. In addition to a formidable fruit and veggie section - they also carry shopping staples like bread and milk (yay for gluten-free and almond milk). Though their deli section did have an impressive amount of fresh meats, tamales, and South American pastries - I stuck to their standard produce items. If you're in the area and enjoy perusing grocery stores - as much as I do - I recommend popping in here. Trust. read more

Neat little market carrying all sorts of mexican and south american goodies! Even though I probably didn't know 90% of the products they carried, it was still interesting to walk around and find stuff you wouldn't normally find at your traditional american store. Came here specifically looking for empanada wrappers in the frozen section and voila! they carried them! they also carried frozen brazilian bread which is SO bomb people!! They also have a good selection of jarred dolce de leche. No folks, I'm not argentinian but they do carry a hefty spread here of goodies but expect to pay 2X the prices you would normally pay in your native land. Worth it? I think so! read more

Dishonest store owners who tried to overcharge me. I saw ripe bananas at three pounds for a dollar. The cashier charged me 69 cents per pound. I had double checked the price before buying. The cashier talked to probably the owner, who promptly took off the prices. The banana prices were no longer there when I left. They tried the bait and switch on me, but it didn't work. Caveat Emptor = Let the buyer beware. read more

This store is good for those last second things you may have forgotten at the grocery store -- eggs, milk, an onion-- but I would not recommend this as your primary grocery. This store is bigger and has a larger selection than many of the corner stores in the mission, but it definitely does not have everything a typical grocery does (ex. Arugula). The produce is very hit-or-miss in terms of quality. The overall cleanliness of the store could improve, and for that reason, I have not (and likely will not) try anything from the meat counter. The prices here are more reasonable than many of the other corner-stores in the area, but my biggest frustration is that prices are sometimes not clearly marked. Overall, I like this store for it's convenience and price, but will not be shopping here for more than the basics because of its quality and limited selection. read more

Chicharrones, Chicharrones, Chicharrones This review os just for the chicharrones. After searching on yelp, I did not find a single good list for chicharrones in SF!! where have all the good food reviewers gone? Where are the "foodies" doing? (perhaps too busy snapping ice cream on waffle cones shaped like fish?) So I will be on the search for different chicharrones throughout SF for the rest of the year and reporting the results. The chicharrones at Evergreen were very disappointing. They were crispy and were cut into nice bite-size portions. However they tased like rancid oil. Couldn't taste the pork, only rancid oil taste. Enough said, this put them at the bottom of the list/ Maybe they had a bad batch frying in oil that has been used over and over too many times. Maybe I'll give them a try again in the future. But for now, NO!! bad chicharron!! I gave an extra star as bonus point because I browsed the store and they had lots of interesting products like frozen passion fruit pulp, frozen guanabana pulp, etc. read more

This place has been so wonderful to shop at in the last 3 months. The staff is very friendly, the butchers are so helpful, and the products they hold ranging from Mexican to Peruvian are great. Love coming here to pick up aji amarillo peppers and Peruvian tamales. read more

Place is a garbage dump. Expired date codes, rotten vegetables, rancid meat. The arrogant owners are used to being abusive to the poor locals. With the changing demographics, that's not going to fly. Poor people with children shop here, only to get expensive rotten meats and vegetables. The milk is cottage cheese as they turn off the coolers at night. The staff and owners could care less. I hear there is complaints at city hall to shut the garbage dump down. read more

This is the best market I've ever been to in the Bay Area, there you can find many products from South America, Central America (Hispanic and Latin products) after it is under new management the market is 1000 times better. A nice Latin American/Brazilian market that has a good array of products focused on Brazil, Argentina and the Andean countries otherwise not found at the usual Mexican/Central American markets: The price is expensive, but at least they'll have it, right? Whether you need dulce de leche, flavored yerba mate powder or even cuy. they have it all. They even have a very nice selection of syrups and oft drinks, including Antarctica and Colombiana. Meat counter is nice and affordable, and seems fresh/free of flies. Cleaner than most stores in the mission. read more

Probably one of the better little markets in the mission. I go here for most of my food & cooking needs, being that its close to my house but also one of the better markets that I've found. Their mostly Chinese staff are quick and helpful, although they do get a little thrown off if you bring your own bag (i think just cause its a break from their usual routine). They do accept ATM & credit cards if you spend over $10, which if you're only getting produce can actually be a bit hard. They have a pretty wide selection of meats at great prices, although they don't have any sausage other than chorizo (but few places around here do. As far as produce goes, they have what you would probably want, not to mention on occasion they have the biggest carrot monstrosities i've ever seen. I mean these things can be bigger than things you would find at good vibrations - no joke. Although I should mention these super carrots aren't their typical carrot, which is usually pretty standard size. They have lots of great mexican candy and snackies, not to mention dulce de leche and creme mexicano. read more

I used to shop here a lot, when I lived on 22nd St. Although the space seems tiny and cramped, Evergreen carries a pretty good selection of Latin & Asian foodstuffs. This place can stretch your dollar to no end, and was my go-to place when I was flat broke. Interesting side-note: I made a kick ass beef/pork chili con carne with ingredients from Evergreen. My roommates and I chowed the entire pot in one night. That has to stand for something. It's also one of the few places I've found fresh squash blossoms (yum!). read more

This is a really great supermarket to shop for a variety of foods. The vegetables are always at a cheap price. I get my onions here for 69 cents a pound and many other vegetables for a fraction of the price that I would pay at Safeway. There is also a variety of food from different Latin American countries, such as: candy from Mexico, ingredients and snacks from Peru, and many other snacks from Brazil as well, such as Dulce de leche. Apart from this, they have peruvian, salvadorian, and Mexican Tamales. They also have Alfajores, cookies from South America, which are amazing! It just crumbles when you eat it and I can't believe I had never heard about them before. They also have iguana meat and fresh carnitas. read more

Evergreen supermarket is another one of those hidden Mission gems. Where else can you get 13 pound seedless watermelons for 8$, and then get tempted by freshly made salsa and chicarones (sp?) on your way out? Whilst there might be a slight language barrier sometimes, and sometimes, just sometimes, you will run in to some sketchy folks in there: - The staff is always helpful - The fruits and veggies are always fresh - Some of the spices ingredients and veggies sold here are very exotic - The prices are SUPER cheap - Do you need any more points? I found this place randomly whilst looking for grocery stores within walking distance of my apartment, and I felt that I should be educating the others who live in that general neighborhood about this awesome place! This the place I go to when the closest grocer to me closes. I think they close at 7 pm which just around the time I get back from work. Always fresh vegetables and fruit. The meat is not bad either. Unlike many typical grocers, the selection of nonperishables is extensive. And unlike many typical grocers, they are not expired, dusty cans and bottles. They also have Spanish sweet delicacies near the cash register, but I still have yet to buy anything there. I don't think I have ever spent more than $10 here even when I go on a fruit binge (aka peaches, apples nectarines, plums, bananas that I will consume in one sitting). I am too often embarrassed speak Spanish (the language I took for 6 years in school) or Cantonese (my first language that has been overshadowed by English), but they gladly tolerate my English. And as far as I know, they don't speak badly of anyone in their other languages. The grocery reminds me of my childhood when I used to accompany my mom to Chinese supermarkets in chinatown. Then again, this is somewhat chinatown....but fortunately with less people. read more

I bought two identical small cans if red beans market $1.29 along with other items. When i got home i saw they had charged me $12.99 for one can and $2.99 for the other. I asked if I could come in in the morning to correct this. They said yes. When I got there they told me i would have to come back when the manager was there (which would mean I Would have to completely change my plans for the day) & they would review the tape. I loved the store up to this point, now suspect the market prices are less than what is in the scanner. O stars read more
