Next thing you know I've been shopping there for years, I collect mostly 80s90s era stuff and they have a lot of that. But they do also have new comics and older/pricier stuff (key issues/gold or silver age I guess its called). You cant be afraid to dig to find what you're looking for, I've seen the owner help new customers find obscure stuff all the time so I dont get why people say they have a limited selection. Also I took my exgf there and she looked around then left because she didnt see The Walking Dead comics, then I asked Rich and he showed me a bunch of TWD comics!!! This comic store most resembles the ones from my childhood, small and humble from the outside but lots of great stuff inside and friendly atmosphere.

Being back in the city for a meeting gave me the perfect chance to take a nostalgic detour and relive a piece of my childhood. As a former NYC local, I was a little embarrassed that I almost missed the entrance! It's tucked away on the side of West 40th Street, up on the second floor. The moment you walk in, the nostalgia hits you immediately--even the distinct smell of the shop brought back so many great memories of my younger days. Since I was short on time, I wasn't able to explore the upper level, but browsing the first floor alone was overwhelming in the best way possible. It's amazing to see how far comics have come. I had to physically stop myself from grabbing everything on the shelves just so I wouldn't have to lug a heavy stack back to my hotel! I ended up picking up Black Star--a complete departure from the classic superhero titles I used to read, but the cover immediately caught my eye. I definitely need to carve out an entire day to come back and fully dive into everything they have. I just wish there were more places like this left! Whether you're hunting down exclusive pickups or just looking for a great new read, I highly recommend stopping by.

I figured they had to have it in stock. Especially given their massive online store presence. The spot is very unassuming and you have to go up a flight of stairs to get there, but once you get in, the space is warm and inviting. They have racks and racks of comics and trade paperbacks not to mention tons of bins to flip through broken down by character. Unfortunately they didn't have the issue I was looking for, but an employee was quick to look through their system. They did mention that they had it at another location, but it was basically their warehouse & it could be tough to find in person. He was, however, quick to suggest a place like NYCC. When I mentioned I was from LA, he mentioned that if I were to buy it off their website, they usually have discounts that would equate to free shipping. So, while I was unable to find what I was looking for, I was given incredible customer service. I really appreciate that they suggested looking for the issue at a con before even suggesting online purchasing. It showed that they care more about helping me find what I am trying to get vs just making a sale. It shows that they care about what they do and the comic book community as a whole. I'm glad I visited Midtown Comics. And If I am back in the city, I will absolutely return. Until then, looks like they're going to be getting an online purchase from me very very soon.

I don't really buy anything but Magic cards there (and peripherals), but the comic section is up to date and they offer a subscription service - so tell them what books to pull and they'll be there waiting for you when you come in to pick them up. The Lair has recently started bringing in celebrities (from the comic and sci-fi/fantasy world) for signing events and meet and greets - for a store in the Bronx, this is a big deal! Magic the Gathering is now a big part of what The Lair does - and if you're looking to play on a Friday night or over the weekend (Standard, Modern, Constructed, Draft, etc...) this is your spot in the Bronx. For marathon sessions - caffeine and sugar filled snacks are available for purchase (most at $1 each). The owner goes out of his way to do right by his customers - all sorts of perks, give-aways, etc... And the regular customers are a pack of really great guys (I saw someone bring a girlfriend once - so females do pop in, but don't expect too many of them to be there at any given time). I wish I could give that fifth star, but the accommodations are cramped. It's not anyone's fault - the store was not set up to be a gaming space... But - as you might imagine - some people who play Magic are larger dudes who need space to spread out. And yes - there's a bathroom on site to use - but I don't recommend it if you're claustrophobic (it makes the store iteself appear spacious). Again - these are really only issues if you plan to play games (literally) at The Lair and are going to be there for multiple hours on end. As a straight store for shopping for your comic, sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming needs - top notch. Highly recommended!

And from the looks from the window, the store is super tiny and has nothing . go somewhere else. Theres a much better comic store both on the LES and in the Bronx on Fordham road that's worth the trip.

Their prices are pretty standard across most NYC comic shops. But, I find their service to be their hallmark. On so many occasions, staff has gone out of their where to look for a book I couldn't find, grab me something I missed while I'm checking out, and just offer a warm and positive attitude while I'm there. I think this is a solid shop and I always recommend it to people looking for comics in NYC.
