Please save yourself the headache, stress and money and do not go with this company. Not only were they overpriced for cremation (about double what you would pay with a different company) there were continuous mistakes in the paperwork. They would not always return our phone calls when we would ask about correcting this issue. Yes, they finally did correct most mistakes and I understand they were trying to help by filling some of the PDF's in but it was more stressful seeing a bunch of mistakes that we could not fix because the PDF form was not entirely fillable. That's another thing, the forms they sent us, some were fillable and others not. So we had to submit it and they would have to make it fillable and then resend it. Also, they somehow gave my sister the owners number and when she called it was a confusing and awkward conversation. They put the phone number of the owner's/own company's phone number in the pdf form. Not professional. Not to mention the dead chicken on the premise. I understand you're out in the middle of the country back roads, but somebody has to keep up the grounds. All this is easily fixable. The mistakes were easily fixable. It just needs to be double or triple checked before sending. Things should not be this confusing and stressful when your loved one has just passed away. I understand working with cadavers must be difficult, but please, this needs to be fixed... Now I have to go see where I can pay to acquire my Dad's death certificate as this was also a service that was not offered. read more

I'm a hospice nurse and when I tried to call them to assist a family in grief, everyone I talked to was very rude and not willing to help. They hung up on me. I informed family of situation and talked with Eaton mortuary where I was assisted right away. I would not recommend. read more

They took three days to have my dad transferred to the funeral home where I live due to the driver being "sick". I pay their outrageous fees only to be told by my funeral home director that they did such a horrible job with the care of my dad that they advised that I do not see him. Of all the funeral planning I have had this was the hardest. The woman ada was cold rude and ripped us off by overcharging, but it didnt stop there. We asked for a last viewing before cremation and then we received a call that our family member was ready for pick up. I highly recommend that you do not use this place. We contacted evins multiple times from the day my grandmother passed to 3 weeks later and we thought everything was taken care of boy were we wrong after 3 weeks we get a call from a sheriff that my grandmother was still at the morgue and she needed picked up and evins said they never talked to the family which I talked to them multiple times. Very poor customer service. I called several times to try to arrange a direct cremation for my mother-in-law because Evins had been recommended to us. She was on hospice and her death was imminent so I wanted to make arrangements before she passed so there would be no problems with an after hours pickup from the nursing home. It was a weekend and the answering service told me the on-call person would call me back. I waited all day and called several times an never received a call. Even on Monday, they never called back, despite repeated calls and an email. Perhaps a direct cremation was not enough money to get their attention? I called another local mortuary and got great service and they were there for my mother-in-law and picked her up within an hour of notification, even though she passed after midnight on a Sunday night. The people who work there are friendly, but they seem to be new at their job, or maybe they are just completely unorganized. They were working through a new system of retrieving information for documents for clients to sign. I get that new software has a learning curve and I was patient, but there seemed to be this disconnect with the fact that they are dealing with grieving families. We are not purchasing a product. We are trying to get through this part of the process of losing someone, yet their wasn't any feel of sympathy on their end. So when they could not find the documents I already signed and did not return my calls, and didn't walk me through the process of what I needed to do and what I can expect to happen, I did not feel taken care of. I am so greatful that I had the opportunity to work with Evans funeral home for my sister recently. I had originally contacted salas brothers in Modesto, which is the rudest company I have ever dealt with. I chose Evins funeral home and I am more than pleased with my choice. The staff is wonderful and Karen is always available to answer all questions, promptly and accurately. They were compassionate and walked us through the process from start to finish. There was no bait and switch as prices were true to the amount. They worked with us with every aspect of the process and were understanding. Was not up front with my family about pricing for a cremation for my loved one. When asked if we could get a correct quote, they were not able to do that on the spot. Things seemed a little fishy as there was an upset man outside the business warning me not to do business with this funeral home as he was there trying to work out problems. We have been working with Evins on a cremation and shipping the remains to New York. We have been going back and forth with this for weeks and weeks. I wish I had read the reviews! Mom requested Evins because they did a good job with dad. Not so with mom. She eded up with a 3 page death certificate due to their mistakes. I began to wonder if the place even read or double checked their work. I Paid extra for mom to be moved to the head of the line due to the need to return home to Las Vegas NV. It took 5 days and with their mistakes it was stressful to say the least. Oh, and they didn't notify Social Security of her death as I assumed they would. I am so Grateful that I found Evins funeral home. I was recommend to them by a friend who lost his father a few months ago. I'm not sure about what the other reviews experiences were, but my experiences seemed to be totally opposite of the negative reviews. From the first phone call they carried me the entire way. I had no idea what I was doing or what was suppose to happen, but the office staff took control of every detail. When I thought that I wasn't going to make it to the funeral, believe it or not they came to my house which was more than an hour away and picked me and my family up so that we didn't have to drive. No words can say how appreciative I am for all of the help and care that Evins showed our entire family. I would totally recommend them if you ever, God forbid, need a funeral home. read more

Wow so shocking to read the negative reviews about Evins Funeral Home. When my sister passed away unexpectedly last month & I had to make her memorial service arrangements I was too devastated to look at reviews online. I live in Fremont and wanted to have the services in Modesto because that is where she lived. I took my mom's phone book called different places asked questions and was impressed with Evins. I made an appt, drove to their facility and spent an afternoon going through all the paperwork and details with Karen. She was very nice, patience and sympathetic to my mom and I. It is hard enough losing a loved one and I didn't realize there were so many details to planning a service & reception. Karen guided us through everything. Evins recommended a wonderful Pastor, an amazing florist shop and gave me beautiful suggestions for music. That week leading up to the service I called Karen and Aida about 100 times with all sorts of questions and if they couldn't answer me they would call me back. There were a couple very minor things but nothing to say anything bad about them. They did take two weeks to cremate my sister but they told me it would be a little while because they were busy and I didn't pay for the expediting (which was my choice). Their facility on 5th Street was gorgeous, a little short on parking but the inside was very nice. It was nice having the chapel for the services and the reception area for the gathering afterwards all in one place. Pastor McGann did an amazing memorial service, Hand Creations flowers delivered the flowers and I cried because it was like the owner read my mind, the colors and everything about the arrangements was perfect! Karen's son was very nice and sat in the back by the sound system with my daughter's iPod and played the music for us so my daughter could sit with us during the service. They were very patience because my guests gathered a little longer than expected so we were at the facility longer than agreed but they were very nice about it. worst experience. They say they offer all this stuff and don't. They said they would provide some type of hand out. When we got the visitation book there were blank handouts with just there name on them. I had to keep going down there because the lady kept doing something wrong. The whole week I went back and forth from them to lakewood. They put my gma death for my moms. Misspelled the name. So lakewood couldn't do there part because Evins was doing all the paper work wrong. Her body was late. The TV for the video didn't work. They had a boom box for the music. The guy mowing the lawn stopped took his rag off his head put a jacket on when my mom finally arrived. So unprofessional. It was the only option since it was during the lock down. There was suppose to be a viewing. All it was, was my brother sister and me going in for 5 min before anyone else. Please don't let your loved one go out like that with them read more

I feel so bad for using Evin's Funerall I didn't have a lot of choice. They are contracted with CMF prison. My son died in Hospice. It was bad enough to lose my 49 year old son. Let alone him being in prison. My son's and my family were treat do disrespectful. I live in Arizona Evin's is in California. That is a lot that has to be disgusted over the phone. My sons power of attorney only had one signature so it was considered from. I was the one who my son wanted to carry out his final wishes. I felt that my son didn't count because of coming from the prison. It took over 6 weeks to get things completed. First after telling my that my power of attorney was no good. His next of kin would be my grandson. I had my grandson to get in contact with Evin's. He did. Well the first day the person we were dealing with when home sick. So there goes getting started to take care of my son. Second finally She talked to my grandson. Told him he had to fill out some forms and give permission for me to handle the handled my son's wishes. My grandson sent the forms 3 times to Evin's. He and I both were told they had not received them. My grandson had confirmation from each time he sent them. It cost him as well each time he sent them. Finally after a week and a half they said they got them. I kept asking how much this was going to cost. It was not easy for me to come up with money I live on Social Security. I need to price. I was told by the helper that they will discuss every sheet of the form when I fill it out. What part of I want to know the cost before I sign any thing. They form they sent me wanted me to put my card number and authorizing to take the charges out of my account. I was told I would get the first death certificate for free any others will be $21 each. I was told after everything was done that I will have to pay an extra $21.00. Several times I asked for the pricing the pricing was never told to me. Finally Karen Evin told me the pricing was in the forms I need to fill out. Why was I not told that the first time. My grandson wanted to view his Dad. The worked told me she will talk to him. She told my grandson, That is not a good idea. As he is being cremated and he is decomposing. My grandson broke down. He called me and told me what she said. I called her and I told her I was very up set. She said let me look at my paper work and see what we talked about. I told her you talked about it. Because you told me you will talk to my grandson. I was told I would have to pay for the permits for each urn that I receive. I ordered 3 urn to wear around the neck one for my grandson, one for my daughter and one for me. Three days and my change broke. Paying $115 for each on and having it to break. Plus $75 to have it filled. No permits received. Taped to the large urn is the application for the permit. I emailed them and I have not received a letter back. I have give them plenty of time to respond. No I have contacted the Mortuary Board. They told it is is customary to receive the first death certificate. I explained about the dealing with Evans. They suggest that I file a formal complaint. They area their building is awful. There is no street signage. There is a small cardboard in the window. You have to idea where you can park let alone finding the location. The worker said she would meet me in front. I had to drive around twice I pulled into the Mechanic parking lot next door. I was received by a very unhappy person and told me to get out. I said can I just park her to go next door. I need to pick up my sons ashes. He told me no just get out. I really felt threaten. I had to call again as the worker said she would meet me. Around the block again I drove. She was outside this time. Told me to park within the green lines. The street is so narrow getting out the car you take your life in your own hands. We a walked around to the back where there is a parking lot. I said I could have parked here. She said no they have a funeral. It didn't dawn on me to say. I am here to pick up my son. My business is important. We were inside for 30 to 45 minutes. No one came. I was very up set. The emotions these people have for others is a disgrace. I told the owner when I will be arriving. She was very aware of my timing. She said she would make a point to me there. She was not there. I have lived there the death of my father, Mother and my sisters. I have survived them all. Losing my son has broke my heart. Dealing with Evin's Funeral has made me sick. I have had to go to the doctors. I have been sick with stress. No on should have to go thought this. My son should have been treated better. I had nightmares of seeing him decomposing. I am filing a formal complaint. I recommend any one else to do the same. My son's obituary was put in the paper by them. I was asked about family. When the did their obituary. I cried it was awful. read more

My experience was more on the line Yelps filtered reviews. I would give this business a five star but had to settle on three stars hoping that Yelp will make it visible and not filter it. Yelp has a way of filtering out good reviews so that the business owner will pay Yelp to make the positive review visible when searching on-line. The folks at Evins where wonderful to work with, they listened to our families needs and followed through with our funeral services professionally. Horrible Service! The Memorial Service was beautiful but it was not a great experience for behind the scenes. The funeral home does not know how to follow up with their clients. There were many occasions where I had to track down the Funeral Director, Karen to respond to our questions. We rented the Hall on 5th Street for the Memorial Service (beautiful venue) but it wasn't quite ready. There were no paperwork. As an event planner, follow up and attention to details are very important. This company definitely lacks this. I would call and speak with the assistant, only to hear the answer I don't know or put me on hold for a long period of time. I was asked to call at a certain time, which I did, but no reponse back so I showed up viewing only to hear from Karen, "you guys like to show up without an appointment", which I told her if your assistant told you I called, you would know I didn't just show up. I even asked about insurance and security in which I was told I didn't need it, but on the day of the event, they asked for it. The planning process was a nightmare, but because time wasn't on our side and we wanted to deliver the best service for my cousin, we made it work, but not with the help of this funeral home. All I can say is that because of the line of work, last minute is the name of the game, and you have to be able to deliver fast service because Death is not something a family plan for. read more

An amazing service for done my family. I came from out of state to attend my Auntys funeral and I was amazed with what they were able to do so last minute. Coming from a big family and family being mostly out of state they handled it promptly and professionally. I had no idea the difference of laws that California has compared to any other state. For example, the strict laws of next of kin and how the death certificate is supposed to be issued.. This was a hard time for my family to lose its big sister but it was a big learning experience as well. There were times it did get very frustrating but the office reminded my family that it wouldn't be an easy task to handle so we took the planning out day by day not rushing anything, which was the best way to handle our loss. I was and still am shocked of how much is needed to be done and yes I was the peace maker when my mother or other family member were getting frustrated so I understand a what can be a frustration. The funeral was at the Special Event Center a provided hall by EFH and may I say how beautiful the building is. It's is well constructed for privacy of the immediate family and big enough to hold my whole Puerto Rican family. The service was the best I've seen, the flowers, prayer cards, and service cards so perfectly resembled my Auntys love for her family. The hosts of the funeral attended my family the entire service with pure love and I couldn't have been more proud of this business. I will NEVER do business with this funeral home again! I have been an event florist for 7 years and work with several area funeral homes and churches. I was instructed to drop off the casket spray on a Tuesday morning, even though the graveside service wasn't until Wednesday afternoon. I dropped it off Tuesday at 9:30am. It was inspected and signed for by one of Evin's employees. I received a phone call Tuesday afternoon at 3:45 saying that the flowers were unexceptable and dead. I was shocked! I promised to come first thing Wednesday morning and fix it. Upon my arrival, I could tell that the flowers had been used for another funeral! When I confromed them, they did not dispute it and just walked away. Come to find out, they charged the family twice for the same arrangement. After speaking to other flower shops in the area, I found out that this isn't the first time Evins has double charged families and complained about the flowers after recieving (and double using) the arragements!! Many florist have said they refuse to take orders from them and I will never do business with such a shady establishment again!!! Stay away!!! read more

Unfortunate that the State of California Corrections has a contract with these people. They could not give me a date to pick up cremation remains and when I inquired with the state about the cost I found out they overcharged me -which I eventually got back the difference. First call to them was unprofessional as we were trying to get things in order before the passing of my brother. From there on it was not a good experience. Faxed paper work in and asked to be told if anything was missing. When we were going to pick up remains I was told my sister could not even though there were written instructions from my brother for her to be able to pick them up. Reason? The note he wrote was not notarized. Seriously? Why didn't you tell me when you got the paperwork? After heated discussion they conceded to let her pick them up. All I can say is beware of the cost! Don't let them overcharge you and if you have to deal with them through CDC then ask CDC for the contract and make sure they are not charging you more than they would charge the state. read more
