EVP is such a chill spot to get a great cup of coffee. I dropped in on a cold Wisconsin day to warm up with a fresh made cup. EVP does roast their own beans. They have a variety of roasts, depending on your flavor need. The staff were very friendly and quick with helping make a selection. There are a few couches in there and windows to peak at E Wash and all of the hectic traffic. There is a bus stop nearby to get here fairly easy. Such great coffee! The Americanos here are perfect! So what's not to love? The limited options in the pastry cabinet! Maybe we were too late in morning for the choice morsels, but there really wasn't anything to eat with my coffee. They roast their own beans here, and there seems to be mostly locals hanging out. Pretty eclectic--chairs with ripped seats and stuffing starting to escape. If you like that type of decor, you will love it here because the espresso is fabulous. read more

I am by far no coffee expert, but my brother from Chicago asks me to bring him a 1 1/2 lb. care package of EVP's Ethiopian and Gautamalen roasted coffee beans each time I see him. The attain their coffee beans from different corners of the world and roast them to light, medium, or dark to give the coffee you brew a fortified body and change the mouthfeel. If you are like me and not a coffee guy, enjoy a cold brew with an extra shit of espresso to kick that drowsiness goodbye and speed through the rest of your day/night. Please be warned that sleep is interrupted. This EVP is pretty chill and they also have small baked goods to much on, comfy chairs where you can read a book or lounge as long as you like. A real slice of a true Madison coffee shop that had been roasting and brewing for years. Had a spicy mocha here two years ago while visiting some friends in WI from GA. I never forgot about it and have made many attempts (not all bad) to recreate it at home since. Finally made it back to WI and had to come here again to see if it was as good as I remembered. It was! Plenty of spice but balanced, although be warned it gets spicier towards the bottom of the cup. BEST COFFEE AND CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!! I moved away from Madison months ago, and have been missing good coffee. I found a paper gift card that I had forgotten to use before I moved away, and EVP let me order coffee online with it. (It took some special service/assistance from the amazingly patient, Monica. She got it resolved promptly and was so so nice.) My order of light roast and the decaf arrived just a few days later, and holy deliciousness. We are in heaven. EVP, thank you so much for the amazing coffee and even better customer service!! I'll be ordering online again in about 3 weeks. Oh and if you have to drink decaf, I highly recommend the Ethiopian SWP decaf. It tastes like *real* (delicious) coffee! read more

The coffee is pretty good, and it is the closest place to where I live. However, there is one barista I encountered who was so utterly rude--muttering things under his breath (yeah, I heard what he said) and very passive-aggressive. Such a cute little coffee shop on east wash!!! Even though it is small, they set it up and make the space look so much larger than it actually is. There is plenty of tables for people to sit at and do work. I also adore how this place also feels very intimate and would be a perfect spot to catch up with a long time friend. Another thing, the coffee is amazing. They have such a variety of dark, medium, and light roast coffees for people to choose from. In addition, they have an extensive tea selection. It's amazing! The staff is also amazing and extremely attentive. They'll answer all your coffee questions, and they will help you with everything you ask them in the best abilities. They also get your drinks out in a timely manner! What I love the most with this staff is that they actually seem to enjoy their jobs and that they're passionate about their jobs. The only downfall with this location is the parking. They have a small parking lot with limited parking spots. Hands down favorite coffee in Madison, Wisconsin, and maybe even the world. Well, I haven't traveled the whole world, but it's definitely some of the best coffee I've ever had, hands down. I ordered an iced mocha. It tasted like sour, uncooked green peas. I went back in to exchange the drink and he did but not without an attitude. He said he was on 3 hours without a break. Okay... well the heat index is over 100°f and I've been out in it all day working plus I don't have A/C in my vehicle. The mocha was $4 and I tipped $1. He didn't even offer to refund the difference when I traded for the iced tea... a small difference but it's the lack of thought that counts. I guess working in a tiny air conditioned coffee shop for 3 hours without a break is too much. I'll try to enjoy this $5 iced tea I have but I goddamn sure won't be back. read more

Moving here from Seattle, one of my top priorities was to find good coffee. And this cute little acronym-of-a-coffee shop has what I need! Delicious coffee, extremely friendly baristas, and a great vibe. I'm writing this review from the new Sequoya EVP on Midvale and Tokay. Next month, I'm moving just down the street, and I'm pretty stoked about my new neighbor! The windows are tall, allowing great natural light to fill the room. I have been going to EVP this summer to do my studying. It's totally great! I used to study at other coffee shops closer to the square, but I find that now EVP seems to attract a quieter crowd. There's also a good chance of getting a seat. I've only ordered the iced coffee so far, but all coffee is basically the same to me. But the big plus - unlimited refills. Big negative -close at 6 every day, and might be closed sundays. I don't think they have a/c, but lots of windows. Staff seems pretty friendly, and the interior is kind of funky in an independent coffee shop way. read more

I don't have any criticism of EvP in terms of environment or service, both of those are great. This location is perfect to sit around and do work or relax. My only actual criticism of EvP is the coffee itself. I try and support local business as much as possible, however it is apparent that light roast in my mind is something completely different than of EvP; the last two times I've asked for "light" roast beans, I've received rather darkly roasted beans that taste like ashes. This is unfortunate, because I otherwise love the place. If you don't drink black coffee or like dark roasts, I'd rate EvP 4 or 5 stars. read more

The various locations (Mineral Point Road, Sequoya, VA Hospital and East Washington) are convenient. I think the VA location helps keep the entire UW/VA medical system running. read more

A busy coffee counter is just a morning reality, so please just be a little bit more pleasant. I have been there a couple of times and will still keep going, but please a little bit more happy faces. Outstanding coffee and competent baristas. They always have four or five freshly brewed coffees to choose from, and there's usually one really special coffee out (Yirgacheffe, Harrar or other African beans). I regularly catch the barista checking the carafe levels to make sure everything is hot and fresh. The coffee here is for people who know and love great coffee. I agree that this is the best and most reliable place to get a great coffee in Madison, and it's really cheap. A 16oz is $2. Ancora Coffee (another specialty roaster cafe in town) can also be great, but it's more expensive and not quite as reliable. I've been to EVP a lot and have never been disappointed--because of the three or four coffees they have out, one is always stellar. About me: I've roasted coffee at home for the last 7 years and own two professional espresso machines along with two pro grinders and a lot of other equipment, so it's rare that I find cafes that can pull off better coffee than what I make at home. In fact, I've only ever found one or two that can. EVP is one of them. read more

I've barely made a dent in the coffee house experience in Madison, but I just had the best cup I've ever had here at EVP. In the line up of the 6-7 self-service carafe choices was a French/Costa Rican blend. I opted for that choice and found it to be bold, rich and smooth, and completely free of bitterness or acidity, With the in-house roasting, good prices, warm and friendly counter staff, EVP is one of my favorites so far. I also like the personality of the place: funky/artsy with the mismatched furnishings, multi-colored walls, and homestyle tchotchke, and the large common table strewn with newspapers and magazines. Inviting, quirky and comfortable. On the practical side, there's parking and outdoor seating as well. read more

It's close by, it's living room- (or perhaps funky basement den)-comfortable, there are always interesting conversations going on at the round table, and the coffee is stupendous. I've been coming here for a very long time and don't see that changing any time soon. Not a lot of terribly interesting food options, but I don't come here for food. There's a box on the counter where you can keep your punch card if you so choose, and there's something appealing about the ritual of digging out your card. Tiny parking lot, though, and be careful about side street parking, i.e. read the signs very carefully. I've been ticketed before. There are some outdoor seating options for sunny days, but being on E. Wash, it's loud. read more

Two walls of windows allow sunlight to pour in this coffee shop. Lots of tables with mismatched chairs add to the casual, funky charm. We never had a problem getting a seat on any of the weekend afternoons we visited, which was nice. The tables are glass-topped, protecting found "treasures" that make for interesting things to look at (peoples' doodles, ticket stubs, postcards, etc.). The service was just fine, one time the barista was super friendly, another time not overly so... but all in all it was satisfactory. And they had a nice tea selection, loose leaf, so you know I appreciated that! They have a small, private, free, parking lot adjacent to the building, otherwise there is street parking that is non-metered and non-permitted on nearby side streets. Prices very reasonable, baristas and fellow coffee/tea drinkers generally friendly. Very laid-back atmosphere; it doesn't get loud and I never feel guilty for lingering with my laptop. I don't find the coffee to be the best in town, and at times it can be p slow (only ever one barista)... but although they're equidistant from my house, I'll keep picking EVP over the Johnson Public House, which makes me feel uncool and broke. Nitpicks: some chairs more sittable than others, appear to have gotten rid of salads so that there are no fruit/vegetable options (much less anything with protein-- this is not a place to attempt to have lunch) Perks (lol): soup of the day is often excellent, you can put your own doodles under the glass tabletops, hot cider is like $1.50 and comes with a whole cinnamon stick in it that can be used as a delicious straw, good chance of meeting friendly dogs. read more

EVP Coffee is one of the best local coffeeshops in town--freshly roasted coffee, great and friendly staff, a good selection of bakery and drinks, plus a fabulous atmosphere. I was pretty underwhelmed given the sparking reviews. Then again, this is based off of a single visit, so maybe some baristas here actually give a damn about what they serve. The latte I got was way too hot, and made with re-steamed soy milk that had been sitting out in a steaming pitcher--a definite no-no at any decent cafe. It may be difficult to get soy milk to the proper consistency, but there wasn't even an attempt here. The result was a mediocre beverage on par with something I could've gotten at any coffee chain (e.g. Espresso Royale, Starbucks, etc). Though it's on the other side of town, I would have gladly gone to Bradbury's on my trip through for a quality latte had I known EVP's would be barely drinkable. read more
