My husband and I contacted eWaste Disposal upon referral from our contractor who was to do our HVAC work. As we already remodeled part of our home, we understood that an abatement would be challenging as our attic is extremely narrow. Which is why we knew that an in-person site survey would need to be done in order to properly assess the situation and what can and cannot be done. Communication with Tom was initially not horrible although it was difficult to schedule a time for him to come by. Initially he wanted me to just send him pictures which I told him due to the complexity of our home and it's structure I insisted that he come out to survey the situation in person. It seemed that he grudgingly made time within his schedule to come by our home to see the actual situation. After spending close to a half hour with him surveying our home on a Saturday morning he said with confidence that he would be able to do the abatement, sent us a quote and we thought we were good to go. Come the following Monday his employee came by and after taping up our vents told me he wouldn't be able to do the abatement due to our attic being too narrow and so he left. This set back our air conditioning install as the home currently has no central air and heating and with the impending summer months in SoCal this is an immediate concern for us. I not only took time off on Monday to be there for the abatement but what was the point of coming by our house to do an in person survey to confirm it was a doable project only to have a look at pictures your employee takes upon arrival to do the job and say subsequently that they are now unable to do it? He not only wasted our time from that Saturday morning but also my time that Monday. Not sure on this one. Read on please. During a recent home improvement project, I was taking up some carpet and discovered possible asbestos on the floors. Project halted, calls to asbestos removal companies made. PROS - The owner Tom seems like a good guy. Personable, friendly. - Tom came over within two hours of my call to take a look at the problem. - Bottom line was our asbestos issue was taken care of (I hope). CONS - Tom initially quoted us around $1300, which turned into $1850. - The quote was for 621 sq ft when we had only around 360. When we brought that up, Tom then told us the quote was not for square footage. - The quote also included a heater closet, which was not affected nor was it ever inspected by Tom. - The work crew came out a day early without notice. At 0730 in the morning. - There was some residual material that the crew had to clean up on a second visit. - Tom is a nice guy, but he could easily pass for a snake oil salesman. - We had some carpet left in two rooms. Tom asked me to rip the carpet and tack strips up to make it easier on his crew. Wait a minute. So, you want me to possibly further expose myself and my family to disturbed asbestos? - After bringing up issues with Tom, he gave us a discount on the "emergency letter" fee. Since our situation required quick resolution, we needed an "emergency letter" to the SCAQMD explaining why we needed a rapid response. Not sure if this is Tom's fee or SCAQMD's. Essentially, just about everything that Tom told me either did not happen or was changed without notice. Nothing way over the top, but incovenient to say the least. Well, The gentleman on the phone tried scaring the heck out of me and jacking up the price of pickup and disposal. I received a quote of 400.00 to get rid of one 6 inch cement pipe 6 feet long. These types of pipes are some of the safest and have the least amount of asbestos. So here'e the thing: I called Tom because I discovered a small amount of asbestos in a bedroom I was remodeling. I flipped out! I'm not from the US, and the very word "asbestos" sends chills through me because of all your flipping Mesothelioma lawyer commercials on TV here! I had accidentally ripped a small piece of the flooring up and thought nothing of it until my neighbor nodded knowingly and said "that there be asbestos, that be!" GAAAAH! I sent a sample off for testing, and sure enough, it came back positive. My problem was, the vinyl sheet containing it would be a nightmare to remove. It ran under a built in closet, through doorways and under more flooring in the hallway! I decided the best thing to do was to encapsulate it, so I did that. But I really wanted professional eyes on it to see if it would be ok. Tom was AMAZING. He took time out of his day to come out and look. Told me to abate it was going to cost a small fortune, but there really was no need to. The 3 small tears had been completely encapsulated and were safe. The rest was undamaged. It was going to go under new laminate flooring. His suggestion: don't even touch it. Leave it, and just put the new flooring down. Wow! He saved me thousands of dollars, reassured me that it was safe, and left me feeling happy that what I had done to encapsulate it was perfectly acceptable. I have literally had sleepless nights since discovering the problem, and I'm now left feeling so much better.
