By the time it was my turn, my lasso of truth was practically buzzing. I have great insurance -- $10 co-pay for my exam -- yet somehow I still walked out paying an extra $40 for a retinal photo scan I was never told about until after they'd already decided I "needed" it. When I asked if it was required, all I got was, "The doctor recommends it," which is optometry speak for "It's optional... but we're doing it anyway." The only hero in this storyline was Dr. Pantea Meghdadi -- She is smart, kind, professional, and honestly the only reason this review isn't a flaming one-star Amazonian battle cry. Otherwise? So you pay Target's eye doctor for a full exam and retinal scan, but they hold hostage your PD to try to force a prescription made with glasses you don't want. I am convinced that with doctor's knowledge and experience he will fix it or get you the best referral to treat your vision issues. The first person in our family to make contact with the doctor was my brother Chris, when during mountain bike riding accident he experienced a handful of coarse sand launched into his eyes. The pain was immense and he completely lost vision in one eye, driving with one eye he reached the Dr. Spaeths office, and chris was very happy that all the coarse sand was cleaned off his contact lenses and the sclera and he recovered all his vision back. My eye adventure was much more dangerous, as one morning I woke up with a cobweb floater taking up 33% of my vision, urgent care said it was nothing to worry about and should go away soon, well the floater was still there several days later, so listening to my brothers recommendation I made an appointment with Dr. Spaeth's office asap, turns out i had a detached retina and needed immediate surgery to save the vision in my eye. Heavy? You better believe it, and Dr Spaeth diagnosed the situation correctly and he took immediate action and made a call and got me an appointment at the best ophthalmology center in the country ( just the opinion of many) in Orange California. Not only did the surgeon save my vision (including peripheral vision) my eyes reaction time was as good as usual as i returned to playing competitive tennis. The recovery time was difficult and long and Dr Spaeth was there for me every step of the way. Fast forward to my 90 plus year old mom who has had countless eye infections and has extreme dry eyes that at times were so painful she would scream in pain. (after deciding to ditch the large eye center down south she decided to give Dr Spaeth a try, and I am happy to say she is back normal with very little pain. Extremely Unsanitary and Unprofessional Experience - Resulted in Eye Infection…read more I went to Dr. Zia at the Optometry at The Shops in Mission Viejo for a simple routine eye exam and unfortunately ended up with a severe eye infection. Within a day, my eyelid became swollen, painful, and red. I have since had to see both my primary care doctor and an eye specialist, who confirmed the infection and prescribed antibiotics. Despite treatment, the swelling and discomfort have persisted for several days (photos attached show the progression). During my exam, I observed very poor hygiene practices -- no handwashing before touching my eyes and no visible cleaning of tools between patients, eye drops used but cannot be sure how clean and new it was. When I brought this up after chafing my my primary care that I for sure picked up an eye infection my concerns were dismissed they tried to blame it on other things AfterwardsI reached out to provide feedback and explain that I didn't feel comfortable having my exam given the outcome and several mistakes during the exam (including entering the wrong astigmatism axis). A staff member named James initially offered to reverse the charge so I could go elsewhere, but the office later refused and billed my insurance anyway. When I later spoke with Dr. Zia, she confused me with another patient named ("Zaineb"), gave inconsistent explanations, and seemed unsure who she was speaking to, even though she is the one who called me back, which was very unsettling. Between the poor hygiene, few mistakes on the exam, and refusal to take accountability, this was the most unprofessional medical experience I've ever had. I'm sharing this review, along with photos, to warn others to be extremely cautious before booking an appointment here.
