Extremely Unsanitary and Unprofessional Experience - Resulted in Eye Infection I went to Dr. Zia at the Optometry at The Shops in Mission Viejo for a simple routine eye exam and unfortunately ended up with a severe eye infection. Within a day, my eyelid became swollen, painful, and red. I have since had to see both my primary care doctor and an eye specialist, who confirmed the infection and prescribed antibiotics. Despite treatment, the swelling and discomfort have persisted for several days (photos attached show the progression). During my exam, I observed very poor hygiene practices -- no handwashing before touching my eyes and no visible cleaning of tools between patients, eye drops used but cannot be sure how clean and new it was. When I brought this up after chafing my my primary care that I for sure picked up an eye infection my concerns were dismissed they tried to blame it on other things AfterwardsI reached out to provide feedback and explain that I didn't feel comfortable having my exam given the outcome and several mistakes during the exam (including entering the wrong astigmatism axis). A staff member named James initially offered to reverse the charge so I could go elsewhere, but the office later refused and billed my insurance anyway. When I later spoke with Dr. Zia, she confused me with another patient named ("Zaineb"), gave inconsistent explanations, and seemed unsure who she was speaking to, even though she is the one who called me back, which was very unsettling. Between the poor hygiene, few mistakes on the exam, and refusal to take accountability, this was the most unprofessional medical experience I've ever had. Had been going to another optometrist for 20 years, but heard great things about this optometrist and her staff so decided to give them a try. First, my daughter, Sophie, got an exam and love Diana and her team. She said she pointed out things the other optometrist never did. She ended up getting a beautiful pair of Chanel glasses that she loves. My wife saw the quality of care and decided she would get her next glasses here and also got a pair of next season's Chanel glasses that she got a "sneak peek" at. This review concerns the charges from this office, not the optometrist. I scheduled an appointment for my husband's annual eye exam and asked twice about our copay, being told it's $10 each time. However, yesterday my husband came home from his visit and said he was charged $179, even though he used insurance. I thought it was a mistake and called the office to clarify, but a rude staff member told me that there was an extra examination performed by the optometrist, which he signed for and accepted. My husband believed it was part of the routine eye exam because he does this every year. He says no one mentioned that there would be an extra charge, and he thought he was signing for the routine exam paperwork. It seems that because of the bad economy, this is a new tactic some medical offices are using--adding charges for patients without providing any explanations. After getting a great LASIK done over 15 years ago, I wasn't very diligent about getting my annual and this year, I noticed I couldn't read the tiny letters far away sometimes, nothing alarming, but there was a difference. So went to make my appointment and found my last optometrist had closed, not sure when. So now it's COVID and need a new doctor, did a search online and found a few where you can make online appointments. The first place wasn't a true online appointment application, it was one of those send me an email with some options, that's annoying so I moved on to the next, that one had a wait period like a month out, so this was actually my third try and the reason why I didn't try it first was because it's in the mall, and I just assumed it would be packed during the holidays. Anyway, made the online appointment, it was super easy, and filled out all the questionnaires and everything online. I love getting everything done online before I get to an appointment! They had a message on the door to call a phone number so someone could come let you in, however, the staff saw me and greeted me from inside to let me know to they'll be right with me. Once inside, they took my temperature and asked me to wash my hands, then had me sit/wait. They sanitize everywhere anyone has been and made me feel safe. Bonus, they were all super friendly and nice and patient. I'm terrible with names but there was a guy up front, then a lady who helped you pick out glasses and the female optometrist. I must say this experience was enjoyable and for the pricing, they told me the guy made an Excel sheet which had formulas, which I love because I'm an analyst and love Excel lol. I think I tried on 6-7 pairs of glasses before finding "the one" and I just LOVE them! read more

Very professional, friendly and prompt. The staff at the front of the office are always responsive to any questions/concerns. The eye doctor who saw myself and my two daughters is extremely considerate/patient with children. Both my girls felt very comfortable during the eye exam process. The explanation of what goes in the chart, what "blank" means, etc., are easy to understand. I've never encountered a problem with insurance or even when requesting them to forward my/daughter's prescriptions. My son was visiting me from LA and needed an updated exam for glasses and contact lenses so I searched online and found Optometry at The Shops. The reviews are all pretty honest and positive (there are always a few who aren't happy). They checked his VSP insurance plan over the phone and made an appointment for us for the next day. Dr. Diana Ciobanu (Optometrist) was very thorough and after the exam James Tran (Optician) gave my son a rundown of his insurance, costs, a printout of his prescriptions and no pressure to purchase anything. He ordered a beautiful new pair of glasses from them and also had a pair of glasses he loved (Tom Ford's) that needed new lenses and they will also do that for him. They sell high quality frames like Salt and Tom Ford so they are a little pricier but no different than any other retail shop. I am very pleased with their service. read more

I have been a patient/client for several years. I drove over 40 miles one way just to meet with Dr. Paul who is very thorough during an eye exam. In fact, my vision has changed drastically in that last few months which was a concern of mine. I was worried and she explained what was going on, which put me at ease. This is my first time going to an optometrist without my parents (I know I know). As soon as I got there I was greeted right away by James. They ask you a few questions for covid of course and ask that you wash your hands and they will take your temperature. The staff (Dr Chiobanu, Shannon and James) were all extremely accommodating and welcoming of us. You can tell they love what they do. After my exam I sat with Shannon to pick out some frames and she went above and beyond with showing me how my insurance works. *** As a customer, be aware what they charge you as this place will try to unlawfully get extra money from you! *** This VSP network optometrist was very professional, informative and caring. The staff was nice as well. I would have given a higher review if it wasn't for the the fact that they charged me an extra out of pocket fee that I questioned before paying. I clarified which insurance I had and I even told them I shouldn't be charged any additional out-of-pocket expenses. I have VSP Premier insurance, which is a state-sponsored vision benefit regulated by California Department of Managed Health Care. I have this insurance through my employer and pay extra for the Premier plan. According to the contract with VSP Network Doctors, covered services are clearly described in their contract with no additional out-of-pocket costs. I got it all sorted out in the end by calling and filing a complaint with VSP who worked on my behalf to get the money refunded to me. Just a big hassle!! They knew exactly what they were doing and I'm sure they make extra money by doing this to their customers on a regular basis. My advice to the Optometry at The Shops is to be sincere and honest with their customers! ----------------------------------- 3/8/23 Update: I received a phone call from the manager of Optometry at the Shops. We had a nice conversation. He was very apologetic and assured me that the billing mistake that occurred with me was due to human error. I did remind him that I had verbalized to the employee that I should not be charged an additional out-of-pocket expense with my insurance plan. The employee still insisted that the he had carefully reviewed my plan and that was the correct information. The office manager asked me to reconsider my online review for this small private business. As previously stated I did end up getting it all sorted out by receiving a refund. In addition to the refund, the office manager did reach out to offer an apology on behalf of the business. With that said I updated my original 2 star "could've been better" rating to a 3 star "ok" rating. My advice to the Optometry at the Shops remain the same as stated above. read more

Such a great experience! This was my first ever pair of glasses at 29 so as you could guess I was fairly nervous when arriving. Dr. Ciobanu quickly put my fears at ease and was warm, inviting and professional. After testing, it was time to pick out my very first pair of glasses. Shannon worked with me for well over half an hour with had an equally calm and professional manner that Dr. Ciobanu had until we found the perfect pair. I'll admit, any glasses felt foreign to me and she gave many helpful opinions without being pushy. Would recommend them to anyone. Recently I have been on the computer much more and I've dealing with terrible headaches and eye fatigue. When I told Dr Ciobanu about this she asked about my ergonomics at work and at home, and finding that those were ideal, we came to the conclusion that my time in front of screens was the issue. Not much I can do to change that at the moment. She recommended a Blue A/R to help filter out some of the blue light from the screens. Almost three weeks later with the new lenses and it's a world of difference. Not only did they help with work, but I find myself using them when I'm watching tv as well. In fact the glasses have now become my daily drivers. Anyhow her staff was great as well. I forgot the name of the employee that helped me with the fitting but they were extremely helpful. Offered me water and went to great lengths to make sure I was happy. Which I was. Long story short. Just had a very pleasant experience at this shop. Dr. C was super sweet and nice all around. Very informative regarding progressive lenses and why they might be a better choice for my situation. I've been searching for a good eye Doc for a few years now. I've been going to the same Dentist for over 15 years, but hadn't found the best eye doc for me, until I found Dr. C. The Doctor's office is kind of tricky to find, tucked away near the men's Macy's department. The contacts from my previous eye doctor were bothering my eyes and come to find out the prescription was off! Dr. C fixed it and put me in some new contacts that just came out. They are much more comfortable and I can see better, which was a win/win! Their optician's were really friendly and knowledgeable. I ended up picking up a new pair of prescription sunglasses too, specifically for golfing. I love them! I really like the idea of supporting a local Doctor like Dr. Ciobanu's over a big company like Lenscrafters. The selection was great and it was an all around good experience. Dr. Ciobanu is the absolute best! She has been my optometrist for over 6 years now. She's very caring and smart. I actually have an eyeball phobia and I experience no anxiety with her. She's patient and just has the best bedside manner. Also her staff is very friendly and down to earth. I even took my son for the first time to have an eye exam and he absolutely loves them and loves his glasses. The store is quite intimate and so if you appreciate or need the less hustle and bustle with other optometry locations, this is a good place to go. They have so many options and can explain everything to you without you feeling rushed or intimidated.
