Because my doctor's appointment was nearby, I came along with him. I am currently 39 weeks pregnant and scheduled for a C-section tomorrow. While browsing, I found items I intended to purchase, but first needed to use the restroom. I asked the employee at the desk if there was a restroom available, and I was told the closest one was across the street at a gas station. This was confusing, considering this is a shop where patrons often spend hours browsing, trading cards, and participating in tournaments. When I pointed that out, another employee chimed in to say the restroom was "not open to the public" unless there was a tournament. At that point, multiple employees began offering explanations that felt dismissive rather than helpful. As a visibly very pregnant customer, accompanying my husband who is an established patron, being told to walk across the street to a gas station restroom felt incredibly inconsiderate and humiliating. I ultimately walked away because the interaction was becoming upsetting. My husband was equally frustrated, and we left immediately. I understand businesses can have restroom policies, but basic compassion and customer service matter--especially in situations involving pregnancy or medical need. This experience left a very negative impression.

I mentioned how familiar all the props seemed from when I used to visit a little magic shop in Ferndale in the 1970s owned by Romeg the Magician and then Poof! As if by magic they pointed to a photo behind the counter and told me that this store was in fact the second reincarnation of that very magical place from my childhood, transported to Clawson 40 years later. What an amazing coincidence that I should take my nephews to buy tricks at the same place that made me fall in love with prestidigitation all those years ago. I bet that some of the items lining the walls were actually the same props from all those years ago. If you love magic this is the place to go.

This is a cute little mom and pop shop that's the only game in town when it comes to stores…read moreexclusively devoted to kites (and windsocks, spinners and possibly a handful of other wind activated amusements I don't know the names for). Some friends of mine started something they dubbed Detroit Kite Club. As you might have guessed this involves people getting together and flying kites. I decided I wanted in and after perusing some kites online I opted to go to a brick and mortar outlet as I was going out to Ann Arbor and saw there was exactly one kite store in metro Detroit. The selection isn't huge. They didn't have the cool skeleton or bat kites I saw online. I did, however, get a fantastic large multicolored owl kite that garners positive comments just about every time I've flown it. (Usually at Metro Beach or Belle Isle.) The lady working there was super nice, too. I lost one of the plastic poles that hold my big technicolor owl together and misplaced my reel of kite string so I had to go back and the same lady cut me a new pole in short time after I showed her the one I needed and she didn't have quite the right length. She even gave me an extra free of charge just in case I lose another. And sold me a better reel than the first one I had - I believe this one is 500 feet. That owl can get way up there on a windy day if I let it all the way out. I haven't flown the owl yet this year. I'm planning on going to the U.P. with two other DKC members next month so maybe I'll bring it. They have a kite that looks like a squid. An owl and a squid hanging out - wacky! The Free Design once sang that Kites are Fun and they are. And this is where you can find fun Kites and fun things.

And the Livonia location is a…read morelegendary Pokémon! :) I purchased over 150 items from this store and the store manager Issac and the very helpful staff member Michael worked with me for hours and hours and hours until we were finished! I can't express enough gratitude for these people because 150 items does take a while and they helped me till the end like the champions they are! They even stayed open later to help me! I used to work in retail myself and I know how annoying that can be and they did it with a smile! Seriously, if you are looking for good service and excellent prices for video games this holiday season, then the Livonia Disc Replay location is your first, last, and only stop! :) P.S. But yesterday, I went to Pandemonium w/ my husband and 2 sons. We went over to the Pokémon section, and I was amazed. First of all, I couldn't believe my older son, who's 8, totally held his own and knew what he was talking about asking to look at cards from different types of sets and versions of different values, etc. My youngest son, who's 6, was doing pretty well himself. But the thing that impressed me the most is that, the Pokémon guru, Trevor, did not talk down to my kids and try to scam them out of money. I don't know if it's because my husband and I were standing there, but all I saw were very professional transactions, ending with an official agreement-binding handshake. My husband and I were basically only there to show support towards their strong interest in something specific and would've only jumped in if things went completely sideways, but I got a feeling they would've been treated with the same respect if we weren't there, especially since my kids know what they're talking about. I'm so proud of them and so impressed with Trevor and the store in general that when my kids get older, I would be happy to drop them off for a couple of hours to battle with others while I go get some peace and quiet somewhere else.
