I hired The Other Guys to load a POD for me that would be shipped from Boston to Denver. They arrived on time, worked fast and efficiently, and had the POD loaded and ready to go in 2 hours. When everything was packed up I looked inside and noticed that the back of the POD was loaded to the top with boxes, but then everything else in the POD slowly sloped downward. I was a little concerned that the top rows hadn't been tied off, but when I asked about it I was assured that the furniture in the front (only about halfway to the top and 8' away from the drop-off) would hold everything when tied off. I said ok, trusted their judgement, and waited to write my review. Boy am I glad I did. When I opened the POD all the boxes at the top had fallen over, causing a cascading effect down through the POD. Yes, the furniture at the end eventually caught everything, but not until boxes were smashed, furniture was scratched, and lamps were broken. If it wasn't for some creative maneuvering by the GrassRoots movers out in Denver, the whole thing could have fallen over like a game of Jenga. Update: The saw my review and offered to repay half the cost of the load. I know they had the best intentions at heart, and both sides are disappointed with what happened. read more

I was impressed with so many positive reviews - so many more than almost any other mover by far. I guess this should have been an "if it looks too good to be true" moment. I contacted the company about my move, exchanged emails with estimates based on home size, certificates of insurance, delivery time frames. The estimate was higher than I expected, but as they explained they handled pack/unpack with their crew (no contracting out), I felt the peace of mind might warrant the price tag. With about 2 1/2 weeks until our load date, TOGM was to come out for the official onsite estimate. The night before I received an email that they would have to cancel the onsite estimate as they could no longer accommodate the move/storage. No further explanation given, no apology and no suggestion or referral to another moving company. I had no words at that time as I was stunned. I found the words now. An already stressful time with a house sale and move made significantly worse by TOGM's callousness. read more

Am I allowed to jump in here with a less than 5-star review? I hate to ruin the 5-star streak, but I really feel like I need to review and can't give 4 or 5. The thing is, last March we were looking for movers to get us into our new apartment in the beginning of April. I knew it wasn't the busiest time of year (I've done the Sept 1 move in Boston - NEVER AGAIN!!!) but I also knew that we needed and wanted great movers to get the job done. Thanks to all the amazing reviews on Yelp, I was totally stoked about The Other Guys and emailed them immediately. Maybe I was too enthusiastic? Had too high of expectations? Like that it would be as if my best friends had all become suddenly buff and were coming to help move everything we own (which is a lot) cheerily? The customer service was OK, nothing amazing like everyone else was raving about. But still, they told us to get truck parking permits for the apartment in Boston, which was more than anyone else had told us when we were asking for quotes. So at least they were looking out for us and the move. Day of: they arrived on time, no problems there. Three dudes moved stuff out of my studio with fairly good speed. On to apartment two (it was a three-point move): only two guys were along for this part. About the same amount of stuff to load as at the first apartment, but of course with one less person: slower. Finally then, to our new apartment in Cambridge. No one had told us we should get parking permits for this place (like they did with Boston), and as a result, they had to park behind the building and walk everything around. And they didn't have dollies or anything to at least roll stuff on?! So it took forever because the poor guys had to carry all our belongings around a building and up a flight and a half of stairs. It was slow and stressful for me... I can't imagine how tedious it was for them. They didn't once complain, but I felt they were annoyed and exhausted. The move took about two or so hours longer than the estimate. I was careful to describe everything we owned beforehand, so I'm sad that the quote was so far off. It should be noted that at apartment one, the legs/feet were taken off of both our couch and chair. They have NEVER gone back on and fit the same again, and both are now a bit wobbly. They even lost one of the parts for the legs on the couch in the fabric under the couch and ended up cutting that to get it out. We never got all the parts back out. To be fair, they offered to get us a new bolt if we wanted, but at that point, we just wanted to be done. It was easier to get one at the Home Depot than to try to coordinate times. I feel bad about sounding so harsh, so I should mention: *The furniture that had to be wrapped was done so carefully. *In the past when we've had movers, things have gotten scratched: they were very gentle with things and nothing was rubbed, dented, scratched. *They still had a pretty much positive attitude and were friendly throughout the move. *I felt they were conscientious and courteous. So... sorry 5-star reviewers. I wish I had had your experiences. read more

After having work pay for my last two moves, I realized I never wanted to move my own stuff again. So when I had to suck it up to pay for my own recent move myself, I looked around for a company with good reviews who was also reasonably priced...and The Other Guys were it. They are awesome. First off, Julius is very quick with replying to emails. They delivered boxes and packing tape for us prior to the move at a reasonable price/box. The deposit is reasonable, and we didn't have to pay for boxes up front. On moving day it was pouring...freezing rain...but the movers were unphased. Three very nice guys and a truck showed up on time and moved boxes upon boxes of books and other items amazingly fast out of a third floor walkup. When the building across the way had a fire scare and the firefighters showed up and made Julius move his truck so that they could occupy the space with five firetrucks, hoses, and ladders, the crew used the down time to wrap up every piece of furniture in our house so they didn't get damaged, so the delay didn't end up costing us any extra time or money. Even with the fire scare, it only took 5 hours to move from a two bed third floor walk up to a three bed second floor walk up. The guys were very gracious about not damaging our apartment or furniture, and moved furniture around without complaining...although they are pretty good at seeing where furniture should go in a room, so we didn't have to move much around! When they arrived they moved me from my 5th floor apartment in the North End to a second floor apartment in Charlestown in less than 4 hours. I am so happy that I did not have to lift 1 heavy thing. I am sure it would have been even faster if I had all my things boxed and ready to go. They were even willing to work with me as I boxed up things around them and they did all of the heavy lifting. I picked these guys based on their Yelp reviews and after getting quotes from several companies. I'm glad I went with TOGM even though theirs wasn't the lowest quote. Julius and Kevin were exactly on time, moved my stuff quickly and without any damage, and came in at the low end of their estimated time! They were great! Two weeks later, I called Julius about getting a couch moved for $50. He couldn't do it but recommended his friend Paul, who was terrific. These guys are amazing! I hired them when I was moving out of my apartment and into storage. They came and packed up my kitchen, taking care to wrap all of the breakable things carefully. Then they came back the next day and moved all of the boxes I had packed as well as the ones they had (also packing some odds and ends I didn't know what to do with as they went) and put it all in storage without damaging anything. I booked Other Guys after reading the raves on Yelp, and they were dead on. Julius responded to all my emails quickly and showed up on time to load up my moving truck. When he saw the number of boxes, he called up an additional 2 guys to pitch, who showed up within minutes. Everything was handled perfectly, nothing was broken, and I don't think the guys even broke a sweat! They were EXTREMELY professional, and made me, a tiny girl, feel safe and secure in getting my stuff into the moving truck. If only the Other Guys had been waiting for me on the other end in NC... I love The Other Guys. I used them last January & also this January & my sister is using them next month. Julius is so responsive via email which is a nice change from all the time spent on the phone with stupid cable companies, utilities, alarm company and the like! The crew was generally good and the owners are friendly and professional in communications but when I hooked up my TV at my new apartment it was damaged. They weren't particularly interested in admitting that this was on them, though the only thing that happened between the TV being fine and being damaged was them moving it. But they're a small business and the rate was cheap, so what can you do. I would just say be a little more careful with fragile items (maybe move them yourself of watch them a bit more when they move them) and consider getting more than the basic coverage (60 cents per pound for items moved) which is really nothing for items that aren't heavy but do have value. *Edit: I just realized the coverage doesn't even cover the mechanical workings of audio and visual equipment. So expanded coverage isn't really the solution either. Just consider taking extra precautions with breakable things. read more

Just used Julius and Co. for the second time--great experience again. The guys are all so nice and are even more careful with our stuff than we are. The pricing is extremely reasonable and they are really up front about the costs. As other posters have mentioned, the communication is fast and efficient but (amazingly for Boston) also super friendly. Our swanky landlord--who is the sort who could afford Gentle Giant--liked them so much that he told us he will use them rather than GG for his upcoming move. Like other people here, I've used Other Guys twice, and in fact Julian three times (when he was with Special Forces)! They are excellent: honest, professional, pleasant, accurate in their quote, and careful with your things (they did knick a wall of mine but offered to return and repair it). They take care of the truck and are fast & efficient (which is part of honesty, since they charge by the hour). They are also--gasp for movers--on time! I have moved nearly 20 times, so I hope that when I recommend a mover , you'll believe me! I'll be using them again if I move (or shall we say, when). They also do hoisting for those of you not lucky enough for a wide stairway, or at least Julius has done this for me before. His MBA height is also very handy when it comes to getting your box spring up to your balcony; all he has to do is lift it up. These guys are great & I highly recommend them! read more

I just finished getting my piano moved with these guys. They might have been alittle later then first quoted but who cares in these kinda situations. Julius and company are amazing!!!! They did it with intelligence and finesse. They got my piano up the most narrow set of stairs and didn't damage a thing. I watched the whole time with bated breath. They were friendly, nice and genuinely hard working guys. To top it off they did all this at a fraction of the cost that I was quoted by other piano movers. I don't make alot of money as a teacher so this was the thing that really sold me on them at first. To have it done with such friendly professionalism ... Just finished an extremely disappointing moving experience. I have moved dozens of times and this was by far the worst service I've encountered. 1. They showed up over 1.5 hours late with no warning that they would be late. When I called at the scheduled arrival time, there was no answer. For over one hour, I could not reach anyone. Then they told me that they were running late (very helpful notice). 2. I have used other movers before and I am always blown away by their ability to move objects efficiently. These guys were no better than calling my friends...if my friends were purposely slow to run up charges. I don't need a mover to sprint between trips, but I would like it to appear that they are not trying to move slowly. 3. I was moving about .4 miles away, so I walked over and planned to meet them at the next spot. Somehow, the drive took 30 minutes. When I called to ask where they were, the movers told me that their navigation system was broken and they were circling around the block. If they were lost, why didn't they call me? In retrospect, after 10 minutes, I should have called them, but I hoped they wouldn't need a babysitter/overseer. They charged me for 15 minutes less at the end, but that still didn't account for the entire time they were circling. Even if it did, my time has value as well. Use these movers if you like wasting your own time. Otherwise, avoid them. read more

One thing to know about this moving company: don't be surprised if you get hit with unexpected fees. For example, they quoted me $180 for a moving van permit, when it actually only costs $40 per the city of Cambridge. When I inquired they said it's to cover their time getting the permit. Which I happen to know takes all of five minutes by filling out an online form. So that's a 450% upcharge for something you could do yourself for $40. Makes me wonder what else they are charging up. In the end I booked another moving company who gave me a binding quote that was literally half what I was quoted from this company. I don't doubt the positive reviews here are valid, but if you're price conscious you may want to look elsewhere. read more

You will be very happy if you hire these guys to handle your move. Here are the details of my move - I hope you find it helpful. This was my first time using movers. I asked friends to move me into my current place about a year ago. But, I had to rent and return the truck, load it, pack up all my furniture, and etc. It sucked. Now it was a year later, I had more stuff, and couldn't bring myself to ask my friends again. So I started searching yelp for meving companies. The Other Guys were well reviewed so I decided to go with them. I am not sure if it is appropriate or not to publish their rate. So, I won't. But, it was very fair and in line with other companies I called. Plus, if you mention you found them on Yelp they will give you a decent discount. I was moving from a 1,200 square foot 2BR/2BA in downtown Boston to a similar sized unit in Malden. Both units had elevators and the move took 5 hours (exactly the amount of time I was quoted). The movers (three guys) showed up on time at 9:30 AM. I was not sure what to expect. So I told them what needed to be moved and asksed that they just make sure my TV's got to my new place safe. Well, I would soon learn I had nothing to worry about. They guys literally wrapped all my furnitur with moving pads - EVERYTHING!! The even took apart a desk for me for fear that it might get damaged even with the padding. I couldn't beleive it. And, we were on the road by Noon. We arrived at my new place at 12:30 - and the unload began. These guys were super-fast. They asked me where everything needed to be, put it all in its place, and reassmbled everything. Plus, they were all really nice and personable. They made the whole process really comfortable. The entire move was completed by 2:30. All I can say is that this was my first time hiring movers and I am 100% satisfied with the service I received. I can't imagine another company doing a better job. If you are reading this you are probably just like me and nt sure who ti pick from all these choices. Just make lfe easy on yourself and call these guys up. You'll be happy you did. read more

Cannot lie, these guys, n' gals, were great from the start. I could not have begged to have three of their, in my opinion, three of their greatest movers. Great job from the get go. Let's just be honest... You Will Not Find Better. They had to have went through 3000 yards of tape and 300 lbs of furniture blankets. Julius and his crew were amazing. They showed up on Friday and packed up our entire 3BR house in about 5 hours. My husband and I didn't have to lift a finger. Everyone was friendly, polite, professional, and extremely hardworking. They came back Saturday morning to load the truck and move us (from Wellesley to Hamilton, MA) into our new home. The new house is 300 years old and has very low ceilings and narrow staircases/doorways. The Other Guys handled this challenge without batting an eye (even though most of them were constantly in danger of whacking their heads on doorways and ceiling beams!). We've hired professional movers before and always had a good experience--but this was the best yet. Not only did The Other Guys make our move totally painless, but they were also VERY reasonable. I hired three guys from TOGM to unload my worldly possessions from a 16 ft. Penske truck after I had driven it across the country. Price was $600 with tip ($455 before tip). Total time was about 3 hours. I chose TOGM because they were highly rated here, their rate was cheaper than RoadRunner's, and they came recommended by the owner of the moving company that I used to load my truck in Seattle. I booked TOGM's services for 9 AM on May 20. When they were 20 minutes late with no call, I called them, and it turned out they had mixed up my reservation (they thought it was for the following day). They had to scramble to get a team together and the guys didn't arrive until about noon. Luckily, I was able to accommodate that in my schedule and the apartment building didn't have any moves booked for the afternoon, so it worked out. They also made it right by waiving their credit card processing fee. The owner said he would also give me a discount on the travel time, but in my final bill it wasn't discounted relative to my original quote (he quoted me travel time for one-way only, but when the guys gave me the bill they said it would have been a two-way charge without that discount). Since the delay hadn't really inconvenienced me very much I didn't press the issue. Overall I was very happy with their services--so much so that I have given them 5 stars despite the scheduling mishap. They worked efficiently and cheerfully and nothing was damaged. Overall it was a much nicer experience than with the Seattle company that loaded my truck (although, of course, also a much simpler job). read more

It was my 8th move in 6 years. This time it was from Boston to NYC. I have had my share of bad movers and moving stories. These guys were, hands down, THE BEST movers I have hired. They made my move, for the first time, stress free and quick. They did not charge me a penny more than what they had quoted me. The picked up and delivered my stuff when they told me they would. They did not lose or break any of my stuff. AND their customer service is friendly, personable and simply impeccable. Julius is extremely helpful, accommodating and flexible. Our quote was fairly priced (actually a bit lower compared to several others I received) and service was not compromised. Our moving team on both ends were stellar, they moved with a purpose, packed everything with care, and were very professional and personable. We moved from a third floor walk-up 1 BR to a fourth floor walk-up studio with no other problems. I hired The Other Guys to help me with my move from the South End to Somerville. The entire process was very smooth, and all of my emails were answered promptly. The guys also were very flexible - for reasons outside of my control, my move was changed from a Saturday to a Sunday, and then we flip-flopped back and forth between actually moving and putting the stuff in storage. Fantastic! Viktor, Volly (sp?) and Kevin moved our house of 18 years into a condo in the city. They were thorough, efficient, tireless, cheerful and friendly. I was very impressed with the care with which they wrapped and padded each and every piece of furniture, even the cushions! The previous occupants had left a huge piece of furniture, for which we had no room. They removed and disposed of it for us, just charging us the dumping fee.
