1-Star Review: Extremely Disappointing Experience This was, by far, one of the worst veterinary experiences I've ever had. I took my tortoise to Exotic Animal Veterinary Center because he had stopped eating, hoping to finally understand what was wrong and get a clear treatment plan. Instead, I spent over $1,000 in just two days and left feeling like I had more questions than answers. The doctor was unable to give us the explanations we were asking for, and the diagnostic process felt extremely slow. We waited what felt like forever for results, and ultimately, we still did not have a clear answer about why my tortoise wasn't eating or what was actually wrong with him. What made the experience even more frustrating was that despite spending such a significant amount of money, I felt like the focus was on recommending additional services and costs rather than giving us meaningful answers. I understand that veterinary medicine, especially exotic animal medicine, can be complicated and that not every case has an immediate diagnosis. But when a client spends over $1,000 in two days, they should at least leave with clear communication, a reasonable explanation of the findings, and an understanding of what happens next. Instead, I left frustrated, disappointed, and still searching for answers about my tortoise. Very disappointing experience. Based on my experience, I would not return. read more

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT PUT THAT HEINOUS DEMON OF A NURSE - the one with the Spanish accent- INTO ANY ROOM WHERE SOMEONE IS GRIEVING THEIR PET EVER AGAIN These two people lack professionalism and tarnish the name and reputation of this business. I cannot recommend ANYONE go here as long as these two people are here. Dr. Zieve needs to take "small mammals" off her list of creatures she treats. She knew absolutely nothing about hamsters and yet pretended she knew more than me and even argued with me about what I knew to be true. We came in after my Syrian hamster hadn't come out of his burrow for two days. We got an emergency appointment for $230 and they for some god forsaken reason assigned Dr. Zieve and her team to my case. My first immediate red flags that I wish I listened to were that after examining him she came in talking about the two spots on his sides telling me how she thought they were cancerous masses and wanted us to test them for a couple hundred dollars. WHEN IS CANCER EVER SYMMETRICAL?? I then proceeded to tell her that those were his SCENT GLANDS and she ARGUED with me saying that no his scent glands were in a different spot. IT TAKES ONE QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH TO KNOW THAT THESE ARE TYPICAL SYRIAN HAMSTER SCENT GLANDS. After that she also said she was concerned that he had a heart problem because she heard clicking. He MAKES those sounds whenever he's handled because he is VOCALIZING his ANNOYANCE. I knew that the clicking she heard was probably just that so once again we did not pay $425 for an X-ray of his heart. The next thing she said was that he had discharge coming from his penis. I never saw any discharge there, but we thought maybe she looked in deeper and we agreed to put him on antibiotics and painkillers, as well as start syringe feeding him. They also gave him an IV for $75. He was struggling with his feedings and looked like he was in pain after. We brought him in for his check up and told them everything that was going on and they told us to increase his feeding. Even though I had told them it was hurting his stomach. They also still wanted to biopsy his "cancerous masses" we told them to please look at his penis again to check if the antibiotics were even doing anything and they didn't bother, they just gave us a new painkiller that wouldn't bother his stomach as much as they thought that was why he was having pain even though he was still showing these signs after we stopped giving him the painkiller. He continued to lose weight and we found a lump on his face after he had lost a significant amount of hair and thought we finally found the cause. We scheduled an appointment, this time with Dr. Kanfer as we found from their virus of a website (by the way their website acts as a virus, don't open it. we managed to get information about the doctors out of it through breaking down the code for it) that she was the only one specialized in rodents and abscesses. Dr. Kanfer could immediately tell what was going on. I felt like he was FINALLY looked at properly. But it was too late. Dr. Kanfer didn't want to do a bunch of unnecessary tests like Dr. Zieve did which I was grateful for. We did an ultrasound for $105 and they found a tumor but he started gasping for air and they put him on oxygen. He passed after an hour. After grieving him for awhile the nurse with the Spanish accent came in and left the door wide open. We asked for paw prints to be taken and she picked him up like he was some object and used way too much force on his paws, it looked like she was crushing him and the prints didn't even come out good. She then put him in his "coffin" (as the very nice receptionist called it) and shoved it to us like it was some package, saying "here's your box". Very cold and matter of factly. She lacked so much empathy and professionalism that is required of this job she should honestly be fired. Thank you Dr. Kanfer and the team that helped on the last day. F everyone else. I do not recommend this vet for avian services. We took our conure in to have treatment done on a broken leg. The vet said she needed to take extra x-rays so that she could line up the bone and that they had to sedate the Bird before doing the x-rays all of which cost a ton of money which is fine but then once we were done, they did such a shotty job wrapping her leg and never aligned the bone....they said it was just too hard. When we got home from her treatment, the bandage was already falling off and did not last five days when we took her back today they said that the bandage wasn't holding up and that they needed to take more x-rays and sedate her again so that they could wrap the leg ...even though they acknowledged that they did a bad job the first time, and it was their fault that the bandage fell off. I will post a picture of it and it will be of the same day that the treatment was administered, even though they acknowledged that they did a poor job on the leg bandage... They were only going to give me 10% off of future work done even though the future work that needed to be done was their fault and it was going to be another $500 on top of what I already paid the first time to have it done. So I requested them just to wrap the leg because I already knew that they weren't going to align the bone and they refused. They wouldn't wrap the leg again unless I took x-rays and we already knew the outcome of it because it had been one week of her healing with the bone already not being aligned. We showed her pictures of other avian services with the leg bandage did not take up like her whole body and asked them why they didn't do a better job and she said she didn't know ...she was not helpful. She was not apologetic that they did a very bad job and then expected me to pay an enormous amount of money to fix their errors.. I do not recommend this vet. If you have birds, I would take them to the Culver City hospital for avian services because they actually know what they're doing and do a good job. also, when I took my burden, it was very clear. She had a broken leg and they took the Bird out, put her on the table, and of course she flew away and landed on the floor, which I thought was bad at the doctor to let her do that and then the doctor leaned over and grabbed her really hard hard and hurt her even more as she was yelping from pain from the doctor grabbing her so hard I thought an even vet would be smarter than to do something like this!!! read more

One year ago we brought our 3 week old bearded dragon to this vet, we spent over two hours there answering all their questions and getting all the information a new beardie owner needs. I felt the process took WAY longer than necessary but the people seemed very nice and educated. We took our beardie back for her one year check up and were there for over three hours this time. The doctor said there was a possibility of yellow fungus so they did a full blood panel and took a culture of her scales to send in for testing. They gave us three medications and instructions, with the assumption that the possibility was concrete. Three days later the vet called me with the blood panel results and made a few recommendations but said we would not be making any decisions until the culture came back. So I called them three times over the next two weeks to follow up. The first two times I called I was told the test results were not back yet, the third time I called I was told the culture never made it to the testing facility. So my bearded dragon was one three medications for two weeks for a disease that was not even officially diagnosed. I was livid. They had four opportunities to catch the missing sample. I spoke to four people at this office before someone realized my $395 sample was lost. Over those two weeks our dragon had stopped eating and showed signs of discomfort, all of which was dismissed because we were waiting for test results that were never going to come. And if I hadn't been the annoying pet owner and called their office multiple times, nobody will ever know how long it would have taken them to figure out their mistake. I regret the five hours and almost $2000 given to this place. To top it all off, I had to request a reimbursement for the $395 missing sample twice before they processed it AND they were rude. We now go to South Pasadena animal hospital and Dr. Eng is pretty great. read more

I took my daughters snake of 8 years to vet to be put down. I myself in 2 years have lost 3 dogs and said I would not cry and I did a lot but a snake? but it hit me hard that another pet we could not save and I cried. Dr Kanfer and staff have saved my rabbits for years. Our bunny, Bennie, has terrible teeth and they have gone above and beyond caring for him and our other fur babies. Kanfer is a rabbit dental expert and if you have exotic teeth issues, don't walk-- RUN to see her. She truly cares and takes time to explain what's going on. Dr. Kanfer has been our vet to our two Guinea Pigs for 5 years now. Both have special needs health issues, and currently one of our boys has frequent scheduled anesthetized molar trims for dental disease. It's so scary to have something so small put under anesthesia, however, I trust her implicitly and couldn't imagine anywhere else taking better care than her. There is a reason I travel as far as I do for our boys... she is the best of the best. Finding exotic vets that KNOW their stuff is not easy, and while that can make it more difficult to book appointments, EAVC always does their best to get us seen and I always feel confident and safe leaving my boys in the care of everyone in her practice. Although Kanfer is our primary, we have also had the pleasure of working with Dr. Silpa who is incredibly warm and performed a very successful bladder stone removal surgery on one of our boys, and Dr. Labrecque who has an incredibly thorough way of explaining in detail what is wrong/what needs to be done...she performed our boys first dental surgery and did an amazing job! Our gratitude to all of the vets, techs and lovely staff there is something we never take for granted, as our little fellas are our absolute world. It can be difficult caring for exotic animals because when they have a problem, it's usually urgent and cannot wait. While Dr. Kanfer is booked up quite far in advance, she does everything she can to get our boys seen and cared for asap when needed. read more

Literally couldn't recommend this vet more. I had an elderly hedgehog I had been bringing here when he started declining- we saw Dr. Lawrence Labrecque and I can't sing her praises enough. She helped him get through his last several months with dignity, she squeezed us in multiple times when they had a full day, and she never beat around the bush with me with his diagnoses or when he was ready to go but was still very kind. I had my guy put down here which is obviously not fun, and they made the experience the absolute best it could be. They sent me multiple cards with his little footprints. It's a very late review. We took JP (Jurassic Park) our turtle girl to get checked out and nails/beak trimmed (a year ago). She's a rescue so she needed extra TLC. Yesterday, I went through the hardest thing a pet owner must face--humanely euthanizing my furry baby. My rat, Scrungly, was in need of urgent care, and I am beyond grateful that this clinic was able to take us in on such short notice after being told by her usual clinic that they were unable to take any emergency appointments that day. From the moment I walked in, I was met with warmth and compassion from Jessica at the front desk, who made an incredibly difficult situation just a little easier with her kindness. Dr. H and the vet assistant(?) Jackie went above and beyond in every way. They treated Scrungly with such gentle care, taking the time to make sure I understood everything and ensuring her passing was as peaceful as possible. Their empathy and patience were truly touching, and I will never forget how they stayed after business hours just to give us the time we needed. What really broke me (in the best way) was the beautiful little coffin they presented to me after the procedure--such an unexpected and thoughtful gesture that meant the world in that moment. Jackie really touched my heart, it was so clear to me what an empathetic, warm soul she has, a true animal lover. In fact, everyone there I interacted with genuinely cares, not just about their patients, but about the people who love them. Losing Scrungly was heartbreaking, but I take comfort in knowing she was surrounded by such beautiful souls in her final moments. If I could give this place zero stars I would. What they did to our family left not only my son traumatized but my daughter too. The first time my son took our bearded dragon to check his tail. Not only did staff say he had tail rot but they said he didn't have long to live. My son was 12 at that time and it was difficult for him to process. They cold faced told my 12 year old his pet was going to die. Fast forward about 6 years! This reptile is alive and well. I did find myself making a mistake and took him back when our beardie looked like he was choking on a radish I fed him that was too big. It was emergent and didn't think the same doctor was there so I made my way there. It was also the closest location to us. I still cannot believe what happened next. My beardie was tired and closed his eyes. The assistant or "techs" looked at him and pronounced him DEAD! She said there was not much they could do for him at this point. She hadn't even touched him, only glanced at him. My beardie then moved and she said "oh he's alive". What kind of place is this? I still said "well maybe she's not the doctor so should be okay once he goes to the doctor. While my daughter was frantic because I had forgotten my wallet in the chaos they refused to see him even though he was choking. They said they would hold him but not work on him until payment was received. They also couldn't give me an estimate of how much it would be even after I told them he was choking on a radish. They only said they needed the 450 to assess him first. I didn't want free services but told them my husband was on his way with my card. My husband was making his way to the hospital and while I was on the phone with him another staff member tried to hide me and my daughter who was crying into a room because she said we were SCARING the one other customer in the waiting room. She then proceeded to apologize on my behalf. At this point I thought he's going to choke to death by the time he gets worked on. This gets crazier, the tech with scrubs on who originally said my reptile was already dead on arrival then came to me and said my pet was very sick and throwing up blood and doesn't think he could be saved at this point. I asked her if the liquid was pink. By now if you're reading this you understand my concern. I originally said he was choking on a radish which is RED! I had seen he was spitting up pinkish saliva so I knew what what she was seeing however it's concerning that this "health professional" working in an emergency establishment wouldn't put two and two together. It was common sense. That was the point that I asked for my reptile back immediately and drove to Monterey park where I found an amazing vet who handle the situation that my family will never forget. The Vet in Monterey park had compassionate staff and equipped, knowledgeable veterinarian, to the front office to the vet. The vet in Monterey park opened my beardie's mouth and with the assistance of another tech pulled the radish out and he's alive thanks to her. Our little guy is alive and well today but NOT thanks to Exotic Animal Hospital. I can't imagine how many animals they have either put down prematurely or just let die. This place is ripping people off and complete liars. I've heard there are others that have had a pet and told they needed unnecessary procedures or medication at this place. BEWARE of this place. The staff is completely heartless and the "techs" are completely incompetent. This place misdiagnosed my reptile not once but TWICE! I'm just lucky through it all I was able to find another place that I can trust but everyone else beware. This place is terrible in every way and if there is somewhere else, consider that place instead even if it's a bit of a further drive. I am writing this in detail because I want to express how real this is to possibly save someone else that is considering this place to stay far away for the sake of your pet. read more

I have been taking my Guinea pigs here for the past 3 years, but my experience got progressively worse, so I've made the switch to Glendale Small Animal Hospital. The wait times have gotten outrageous. The first time I visited (pre-pandemic) it was an hour and a half which is normal, the second time was 2 and a half hours (to give my pig an eye exam), the last was 4 AND A HALF HOURS (to diagnose an ear infection). For reference, it took 45 minutes for Glendale small animal to examine my pig and do a biopsy on a mass (and I got to be with my pig the whole time). I understand clinics can get overwhelmed, but they didn't even give me a call or a heads up about the time estimate. Plus you're still not allowed to wait with your pets in the clinic, so your pet ends up waiting upwards of an hour just to be taken inside the clinic. I also feel very pressured to buy additional items when coming here. My first visit or two they'd sneak in an additional probiotic or supplement which would add like $25 to my bill, so be careful of that as well. I appreciate that this clinic is often available for same day or next day appointments, but unfortunately I would no longer recommend as my go to vet. read more

I am officially not coming to this vet office anymore. The prices are inconsistent and keep going up every time I go in. I wanted to schedule my bird for a regular annual exam and they required $172 deposit. I called other exotic vet offices around and they were only charging between $75-$100. A while back I scheduled my bird for a nail trim which was $65 (I was shocked but paid and didn't say anything.) They had me sitting in the waiting room for about an hour while I heard my bird chirping. I finally got up to ask if my birds nail trim was done and they quickly said "yes". Ummm so why wasn't I notified sooner? And why was my bird chirping in his carrier longer than he had to? Overall, I'm very disappointed with the prices and the service that I've received since 2021. I also never once got to even meet with the vet in person who was performing my birds exam because they were on the Covid protocol from 2021-2023 and only had pet drop off. I one time had to wait 7 hours to pick up my bird for just a regular check up exam. read more

She was the most amazing, empathetic, sweet voiced Angel. She went above and beyond, and she even helped give me referrals due to the nature of my concerns and needs. And honestly, I'm so beyond impressed so thankful for her. She deserves a major raise (if any higher ups see this,js-I have worked many different areas in public service and much much more... But she definitely has what it takes and deserves the credit) I'm not always easily impressed, especially when in a crisis and stressed out. But Marisol is amazing. Amazing top notch care even before we stepped in through the doors for our appointment. They only treat exotics and you can really tell all the techs love and know their stuff. I got the best advice up till my appointment to keep Francis comfortable. She was impacted for two feed cycles and I've started to grow concerned. I soaked her and kept her tank clean and warm. All great advice from the vet! We get there, physical is $99 and then we did a fecal for extra $35 to check for parasites just in case! But the vet was able to massage her and she let her self .. go! A lot! Such a relief and she was on the phone with me explaining everything for a long time - covid times you can't go in with your pet! I got amazing care sheets in a bag full of goodies. Passionate group of people I would recommend highly!! We had Dr. Holly Richards as our veterinarian! Loved her!! Thank you for taking the time to fix Francis! It's officially been a year since I've been going to exotic! My bunny, has seen probably all the technicians and is frequently seen by Dr Sofie, Khafner & Richards-- all which have insanely helped me and my bunny the last year. My bunny is 1 years old and he had so many miscellaneous issues in 2021 mostly stress induced. He's a little anxiety filled fur ball and as a new(ish) bunny mom I myself have so much anxiety for him everyday as I get worried something is wrong with him (pretty frequently). I probably reach out for advice, help or confirmation on his health and other issues about once every 2-3 weeks lol everyone is always super helpful and are VERY patient with ME and my bunny. I really don't have any complaints but if I had to choose one it would be how hard it is to get an emergency visit.. & for some reason no other exotic vets within 30 miles of me can ever see my bunny fast enough since he'd be a "new patient." But this issue is likely due to be understaffed and I don't really want to knock them for it. Exotic animal vet is the only place I trust my bunny going to. So much so, that when my lease is up in three months I plan to find a new apartment somewhere close to not stray too far from them... just for my bunny. read more

Honestly the most professional "Rabbit" veterinarian I have ever been to. From the initial call, to the first email, to the visit itself, not to mention the follow up afterwards. A+++ service all around. They offered me options and weren't pushy about which procedures I chose to decline or approve. I highly recommend this vet to anyone with rabbits! We recently moved and had to switch vets and found this one through our rescue organization. Without being prompted they brought up every issue I ever brought up to my last vet, and turns out they ARE in fact issues that need to be addressed. I wish my last vet had taken me seriously but so glad this vet managed to catch them and provide a treatment plan. They are very good with follow up and quick with results! If you have a bearded dragon I would NOT recommend having Dr. Curtis Eng look at them. He was a very nice man, but his kindness pales in comparison to how unwrinkled his brain is when it comes to bearded dragons. He had given me completely wrong information. I brought in my sick beardie who had not eaten much for weeks and was extremely lethargic begging for her to be dewormed. He had told me it was brumation and that my "healthy beardie" who had lost 25g of weight and had tested positive for pinworms will bounce back soon as the temperatures rise and that a healthy beardie like her shouldn't be dewormed! My beardie was 6 months old at the time when she was taken in (three weeks ago) and beardies CANNOT brumate before the age of 10 months. I took my miserable looking dragon and watched her deteriorate before my eyes. I couldn't take it and brought her back in for an emergency appointment the other day and had the pleasure of Dr. Sarah Wills take a look at her. Bless her soul Dr. Wills and her assistant were the only ones to recognize the poor shape my beardie was in and decided to treat her. Sadly Dr. Will had my beardie at such a poor state that nothing could be done at that point. She had been treated and the parasites that filled her body died and choked her to death. I feel terrible that Dr. Wills had to take a look at a beardie who had been neglected by previous vets and could do nothing for my little girl. If I could I would rate the vets individually. Dr. Curtis Eng would receive absolutely 0 praise from me. HOWEVER Dr. Wills and her assistant (both of whom I feel so grateful for finally finding a wonderful bearded dragon vet and I feel content that my dying beardie was in the hands of someone capable and caring in her last moments) were the only people to recognize that my beardie was in critical condition and that she needed help. However I cannot ignore the fact that Dr. Eng gave me incorrect information and ignored my pleas to deworm my baby who might still be here if he treated her. All in all Dr. Eng should never look at bearded dragons and Dr. Wills and her assistant are wonderful vets who I cannot praise enough. read more

My chinchilla was in really bad shape because of her teeth. I felt like a horrible and ignorant pet owner because I didn't realize her teeth were overgrown in her mouth -- until she showed obvious signs and by that point, it was too late. I had her euthanized here and all of the employees made the process as pleasant as it possibly could be, given the circumstances. The veterinarian told me there was no judgment and even shared a story about a pet she owned that she accidentally gave a toxic toy to unknowingly. She genuinely cared and helped me feel better about the situation. A few weeks later, I received a card in the mail from the vet that all of the employees had signed. They also put my chinchillas paw prints inside. This was so sweet and touching. They definitely went above and beyond. I'll keep that card forever. I don't usually write reviews but when something goes right, I'll definitely write a good review. I took in my rabbit (today) because of a broken nail. I called today morning and was greeted well. The vet was about 30 mins from where I live. But in LA, I found no small pet vets. This was the closest I could find. The staff are very kind. I had never taken my rabbit to a vet because of fright that they'll injure him or hurt him in some way. You do have to call to make and appointment. Their protocols for COVID are pretty high but of course it's for safety which is understandable. The prices aren't high (in my opinion.) But you do have to keep in mind its an exotic veterinary. Exotic vets --from my view -- are higher in price compared to cat & dog vets. But you should always call to make sure vets are in your price range. The waiting time is not much, went in at 1:15ish and was out by 2:15ish (1 hr and some mins) Staff is kind, doctor is kind. 10/10 definitely recommend. read more

Dr. Wills and her team and Exotic Animal Veterinary Center did an extraordinary job with my pet rat, Rick's vet care. I brought him in for a tumor, Dr. Wills is very experienced with this, and after going over the options we decided on removal. Unfortunately, after starting the removal, it was found that the tumor was more invasive than we originally thought so we decided to euthanize during surgery as this would be most humane for Rick. It hurts to lose an animal and making these tough decisions is so hard. I am so sad to say goodbye to my little buddy, but blessed to have such a great team that helped him before he passed. I was met with such sympathy, and Dr. Wills is an incredible doctor. Her medical experience and knowledge is vast, and based on our conversations I know that not only did she provide the best care to Rick, she did everything she could for him. Last month I had to say goodbye to my little hedgehog and it was a really hard time for me. I am a registered nurse and after seeing so much death these past two years it really warmed my heart at how above and beyond Dr. Labrecque and her assistants went to help me through it. Everything was clearly explained and they treated my little guy with so much care in his last moments. They even gave me the time to do post Mortem care like I would have done with one of my patients. Today I received a sympathy card signed by all the staff and Dr. Labrecque complete with his paw prints and I can't even express how much gratitude I have for them because getting his prints was something i forgot and I instantly thought of when I got home and I never expected this card. I will remember this card next time I am helping someone through a tough time in the hospital and i hope to be able to emulate the sentiment, Thank you so much!!!! The package they offer for cremation was also very well put together, I was expecting to just get his ashes but they come very well packaged with a nice box and velvet bag ect. They also give you a paw print plaque but the ones taken by staff on the card captured all his little fingernails, I'll treasure it forever! read more
