I became a new client, it's an $83 fee for new clients and the physical examination for my bearded dragon went wonderfully! I was scheduled today for 10:30 am and I showed up earlier to fill out the patient paperwork. I was taken back right at the time of the appointment. Backstory: I got my beardie back in September of last year (2024) and I was told by the breeder and the owner of the store that my beardie is a male. I named him Zuko because he is a red striped dragon (Avatar the last airbender fans ikyk ). I got a lot of information on how to care for him by the breeder and I felt confident but I knew I still needed to get Zuko checked out by a professional vet. Hence my research on the best vets in town. I was led to Exotic Bird Hospital by other reviews on yelp and boy, am I glad I did! Upon the physical examination I found out that Zuko is actually a female! I renamed her Azula instead, lol! I was asked a series of questions about her health, living conditions and diet. I was provided with a packet of information that will help me ensure that she is healthy and taken excellent care of. I was able to provide them with a fecal sample for a parasite analysis just make sure she's healthy and has no gut issues. Overall the exam went great and the staff was so friendly and compassionate towards my beardie and I which was something I was really nervous about due to past experiences with other vets in this area. I loved my experience with them and the office is so nice! I will definitely be returning to them if there's ever an issue or when the annual examinations are needed. We used Exotic Bird Hospital for boarding during the Christmas holidays for our African Grey Parrot and also during her boarding she had her annual check up. Xamba has no health issues but all parrots should have annual visits just to check blood work to see how they are doing as birds go from healthy to sick in a nano second. All these years of having Xamba I never had her microchipped which is very stupid on my part as so many birds are lost by a simple fly out of an open door so quickly, that I decided during the boarding to finally have her chipped. Xamba handled our being away very well and the staff at the hospital told me that they talked to her and whistled with her and danced with her. Xamba has never really talked but she does love to whistle and dance and she loves ladies more than men. I have always been very pleased with staff and the responsiveness here and will take Xamba no where else. Finding a board certified avian veterinarian is very hard and this place is the best. I won't tell you that they are cheap, but they are the best. read more

I recently brought in my rabbit, Felix, to get his nails trimmed. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. They took us on time and did not keep us waiting at all. The technicians did a great job on his nails, trimming and then filing them so there were no sharp edges. They were gentle and kind with him and made it a "not too terrifying" experience for a rabbit who doesn't like his nails cut. I also had brought Felix in back in August when I first adopted him for a check up and was very happy with the staff and vet. I can't say enough good things about this place. Dr. Rhoda Stevenson is THE most amazing avian vet. An expert in her field abs still humble and down to earth. Very honest and truly cares about animals. Truly her calling. She saved my umbrella cockatoo's life now twice in 3 years. She had performed cloacialplexis dozens of times and knows what she is doing. I flew on an airplane (Delta allows birds.) from New York City here and stayed in a hotel 5 minutes from the bird hospital for two weeks each time for my bird's operation and they were successful. Every tech and receptionist is kind compassionate and have birds themselves. Amazingly attentive staff that goes above and beyond with exceptional care. I started taking my red eared slider to Dr. Colbert this year and have been so thankful for the service provided by both him and the staff. Everyone is welcoming and prompt. The staff is quick to provide plenty of information, reference articles, and food recommendations in order to help me care for my turtle. If you have a bird and they 1. need their annual birdy well visit (once a year!) or 2. seem like they could maybe possibly be sick, and 3. and you live within 500 miles, you should ABSOLUTELY take your bird to the Exotic Bird Hospital. Having visited 4-5 different avian vets across several different states over the last several years, I thought I knew what good avian medicine looked like. Exotic Bird Hospital in Jacksonville is head, shoulders, knees and toes above the rest. I cannot rave enough about them! From their front desk staff to their vet techs to their actual veterinarians, they KNOW birds inside and out. I could not believe the level of knowledge that even their front desk had about basic birdy illnesses. From previous experience, I expected maybe a nose swab for my Eclectus' parrots sinus issue, and some basic "listen and look and weigh the birdy" for the general exam. They went SO far above and beyond what I'm used to (which was just their general well-birdy exam, not for his illness!) that I was absolutely blown. away. Bloodwork, swabs from all the different parts of his body, fecal analysis, AND they clipped his wings and groomed his beak and nails... I was so pleasantly surprised too by the reasonableness of the charges. From previous experience at other vets and all the tests they were going to run, I expected my bill to be *well* into the $700s or higher, but it was nowhere *near* that expensive! These people clearly know birds and care deeply for them. They want them to receive the best of care, so they provide it, all at a reasonable cost. The Exotic Bird Hospital has been wonderful!! I started taking our Guinea Pig there about a year ago because of a lump in his throat. We have unfortunately had to visit them quite a few times in the year and every time I walk away so thankful that I found them. We see Dr. Smith and she has been wonderful. Worst vet ever!!! On two separate occasions I have had an injured wild animal (1 was a bird) and both times they would NOT help, even though they are .2 miles from me. I recently bought a baby budgie and decided to get him all checked out. This was the only avian vet I found, and so when it was time to get his nails trimmed I decided to bring my baby budgie in for a physical examination as well. Everything went great! They weighed my budgie at 32 grams which they said was healthy and gave me plenty of advice for raising him. This advice ranged from diet changes to cage improvements. The staff here was beyond friendly, supportive, and informative. Upon leaving my bird appointment the staff gave me an informative packet for raising my baby budgie. Whether you are a first time bird owner like me, or an experienced bird owner I believe that this avian hospital is the right place to bring your birds for anything medical/bird related. read more

I have been taking my large flock of parrots, many of them with major physical problems, to the Exotic Bird Hospital and Dr Stevenson since that late 1990s, despite their being 252 miles from me! The quality of attention and care from the front desk, the techs, and most of all the vets is unmatched in my experience, and they make it will worth every mile of the drive. With 31 parrots, sure the bills add up, but it's well worth it for the quality of care received. if you need a vet for your parrot at all, you need the best, and this is it. (I should mention I was there one day when an emergency came in: a Blue and Gold macaw whose wing had been broken when a dog/cat but "sees birds" vet had attempted a wing trim.) I drive from Fleming Island to bring my bunnies here. I also board them here whenever we go out of town. Only once did I have an emergency on a Friday night, and they were so kind. I was even able to come visit my baby over the weekend, and they didn't mind me calling to check on her. Vet even called on Sunday to give me an update, and let me know bunny could come home the next day. They are extremely knowledgeable, and never judgmental. Well those charges were reversed as they were never authorized in the first place. Take your angels to Gainesville or Orange Park. Sorry- I would have given an excellent review last year or the year before. Dr. Stevenson was great with my other two birds but there is a new doctor who obviously has no idea what she is doing. I was told to inject and eleven-year-old cockatiel in the chest at home twice a day. Get that? And I am an elementary school teacher. The bird could have easily died of stress or because of a mistake...... Fortunately, I know birds and didn't do it. No joking.. this place is really scary now. I didn't understand why my bird was on so many different meds with no tests done and called to ask questions. They play games and call very late or hang up. New vet mixed up my bird's records apparently and left a message about a different situation. To top it off, the new vet is not respectful and talks negatively about clients within their earshot. Someone somewhere has accountability for this but as far as I'm concerned I won't chance it. I will take my birds elsewhere. read more

Very Expensive. Ask every step of the way how much each thing costs. Did I say its expensive? Really very overpriced and almost fell over when I got the bill. Staff has no time for your surprise. Very rigid and unpleasant about fees and in general. Unhappy with office staff - every step was resistance and then overboard friendliness - but very happy with Dr. S and her vet techs. Its a shame. Really upsetting experience - desk staff so intense that it ruined the good feeling I had with Dr. Stevenson. ! I read another review that said they would not help a wild animal... I did end my relationship there thinking - its all about the Benjamins (the money)... and my bill was over 5 Benjamins... exam, basic blood, and xray. $500+??? read more

I took my chinchilla here this past weekend because he was acting lethargic and not running in his wheel. The staff was friendly and treated my little boy with love. They diagnosed him with a hurt foot, and the medicine they gave him has perked him right up. I travel about 125 miles one way, from central FL, up to EBH in Jacksonville for my Amazon parrot's health exams and treatment. They saved Sherman's life when she was 18 yo suffering from a staff infection, that was misdiagnosed by a LOCAL small animal vet who "claimed to be" Avian Certified. I almost lost her then, but found Dr. Rhoda Stevenson and her staff to be critical in Sherman's recovery and how healthy she is today. Yes, a Board Certified Avian Vet is pricey, but my Amazon is now 32 yo and as important, medically, as any member of the family. She and I still see Dr. Stevenson on an annual basis for blood work and wellness exam. We did have an emergency last summer and the office staff got us right in to see the Dr. that morning. The meds Sherman needs for arthritis, thyroid issues etc. are mailed to me, when I need refills. They are very accommodating, in that regard. I have boarded Sherman there, too, and never worried once about her care. While waiting to be seen by the Dr., it is possible to personally observe the other boarded and resident birds. They always seem to have clean cages and fresh food. Exotics are tricky and you need EBH if you are going to give them the life they deserve. read more

Perfect for chickens! Exotic Bird Hospital was so knowledgeable about caring for my sick pet chicken, Annie. I have a small backyard flock and, until EBH was recommended to me, I had no one to go to. Nothing I found on YouTube worked. They worked us in their schedule in a day and showed me how to administer the medications Annie needed in the comfort of home. When I had a tough time with tube feeding, I brought her back in and they showed me a different technique. So far, it's working beautifully. read more

I have taken some time to decide if I wanted to leave a negative review based on emotions. I am no longer angry, but I feel the need to warn other pet parents about this business. On Friday, March 8, I took our parakeet in for emergency treatment due to bloody droppings. He was not lethargic or anything. He was examined and given a precursory prognosis, more would be known after testing. We were given the option of a lower and upper treatment options, with the upper being more expensive. I accepted the lower plan and was excited about the possibility of him getting better. However, it was not to be. After accepting the plan, I was asked for an initial "deposit" before treatment continued. That was not a problem. The amount was less than the original lower limit option, but I assumed it was based on a percentage and not the total amount. The amount I was charged was for another account. When the mistake was discovered, I was notified and told that full payment was due, but I did not authorized any more charges. I spoke with the office manager, Belinda, after waiting 20 minutes for her to call and explained that I did not want any more procedures done. We were prepared to pick him up when the office opened the next morning. Sadly, he passed away before I could do so. It is very odd to me how he was on the mend and responding well to us at 6pm (I have photos), then pass on a little past 7. So here's the timeline. I will not make accusations. I will let you decide for yourself. We arrived at 11 am for his initial exam. We returned at 4 for a visit until closing. He was eating, moving around the incubator, perching on his food dish, and responding well to us. We snapped a few photos and left at 6pm. At 6:10pm we get a call about the mistake on the account. I asked to speak to the manager, she would not take my call. I called again and left a message. She retured my call at 6:39pm. We talked about discontinuing care and she said "the doctor" would give me a call. Our call ended at 6:52pm. At 7:13pm "the doctor" called to let me know he had passed on. It's suspicious how when I did not authorize further charges and was willing to come pick him up, he SUDDENLY passes within 30 minutes of talking to Belinda. Please be careful here. read more

This is the worst vet I have ever come across. I took my Eclectus parrot there for a beak trim and a health exam. He wasn't sick at all, but they recommende to do a throughout exam with all kinds of tests. When they tried to draw blood from my boy, I couldn't watch it any longer how they tortured my baby. They were unable to get blood from him and had to cut several toenails, he screamed the entire time and I had to leave the room, crying for my boy. It was so bad and took almost 20 minutes until they finally got enough blood from him. I thought I was in a butchery, not in a bird clinic. When the test results came back after a week, someone called me and told me my boy had liver disease and that his AST was extremely high, that I need to give him Lactulose with milk thistle mixed in liquid form. (My boy is only 4 years old)!!! I live in Palm Coast and drove again to Jacksonville to pick his medicine up. I gave it to him like advised and the morning of the 4th day, I found my boy lifeless and almost dead in his cage. I was shocked to death and didn't know what happened to him. I researched the medication they had prescribed and found out, that it is a laxative also and can lead to severe dehydration. which obviously happened to my boy. He had a seizure in my hand, it was that bad and I though I am going to lose him. I called the hospital and said, it's an emergency, but the vet wasn't available until 4 hours later. Had I not given him electrolytes very quickly, my boy would have died that day. When the vet finally called me back over 4 hours later, I had saved my boys life and her reaction was as disinterested as can bel The only thing that was of her concern is to get me back a week later for a follow up blood test. Then I searched the web and found an avian website from a respected vet in Illinois who published all the values of blood test and their normal range and guess what,? My boy wasn't above the normal range with his liver values, and wouldn't have needed any medicine at all. This medicine nearly killed my boy and they did not tell me about the possible side effects and complications. They prescribed something that wasn't necessary in the first place. I will not go there ever again and not recommend this hospital and the vet to anyone. All they are interested is money, money and money. read more

These people have been there for me since I brought my bird home 21 years ago. They have helped through hard times when my bird needed it but I could not. They truly care for the animals people bring in and they help the owners knowing that if they help the owner they are better suited to continue taking care of their babies. They made an early impression on me so that when I moved to Atlanta Georgia I still drove to Jacksonville Florida to seek their expertise. When I moved to Michigan from Florida my bird got sick on the way, they guided me to the next state that had an avian specialist and saved his live yet again. I recommend Dr. Stevenson and staff as their reputation proceeds them as well as their so called "Fame"even as far as Orlando.(Everyone knows her and says she is the SWEETEST out of most avian specialist they know!!!!) I love them and will take my bird to them as long as he is alive. read more
