We found out our beardie, Rex, had cancer after it was much too late, and the staff here was so kind and compassionate about euthanasia for him. They gave me all the time I needed to say goodbye and waited an hour for family members to arrive. Later, I adopted a rescue beardie with MBD, Gus, and I'm happy to say that he is thriving! It is a trek to get here but Gus will need a checkup soon, and I consider Exotic Pet Vets (formerly Colorado Exotic Vet) to be his clinic. read more

If you have a bird, go see Dr. Noto and/or Dr. Fitzgerald. They have been treating my cockatiel and the experience has been phenomenal. They are incredibly knowledgeable and, most importantly, they are kind and non-judgmental. It's rare to find a team that cares just as much about the owner's well-being as they do the patient's. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my bird's care. They consistently go above and beyond, providing a level of personal attentiveness and thoroughness that makes it clear they are truly invested in my bird's well-being. Ray & Hannah are professional and friendly and make me feel like I'm not just a number walking through the door. What I appreciate above all else is the deep compassion and heart they put into their work. As a bird owner, it is so easy to feel anxious or judged when seeking care, but this team provides a completely judgment-free environment. They have shown such genuine kindness to me and such incredible gentleness toward my bird. This experience started off kinda slow. After being warned about fees I'd incur if I was late and a full breakdown on how late would be considered late.... I spent 20 minutes in the waiting room past the time I was scheduled for. No such penalty for them being late. If you are going to make such a statement about clients being late, you may want to try harder to be on time yourself. Just my two cents worth. Once I was in the exam room, this place was the very definition of pleasant, friendly, professional and deeply knowledgeable when it comes to birds. The vet tech, a beautiful woman named Maddi, really set the tone of being welcoming and professional. She really cared about our pet and was bubbly and fun. Then we saw Dr. Ruoff and she knew everything there was to know about birds. She explained what was happening with our bird and the options we had. The decision really was that we couldn't really do much for my bird as cancer and her growths were simply too hard to operate on and the outcome would not be positive. I did feel listened to and felt the doctor really cared. Sadly, our bird died a week later. The beginning was shaky but our experience ended up being a positive one. Ray and Hannah at the front desk were amazing and knowledgeable about crested geckos - loved chatting with them as I'm a first time reptile owner. Ray talked to me for like a half hour the evening before our appointment because I was scared and worried about our gecko. They gave me so much helpful information and I felt so much better knowing we'd be able to see a vet the next day. The doctor was also SO knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and supportive. I can't say enough good things about Colorado Exotic Animal Hospital. When my rabbit Addison started having serious health issues, my local vet admitted they didn't specialize in exotic animals. After calling so many places, I finally reached someone at Colorado Exotic Animal Hospital (I wish I remembered her name), and from that very first call, I felt comforted and reassured. She was incredibly kind and made me feel like Addison would truly be in good hands. A few days later, I spoke with Ray to schedule the appointment, and they were just as wonderful--so patient, helpful, and understanding, especially knowing I would be traveling six hours from out of town. The day of the appointment, my drive took longer than expected, and Ray reassured me to just drive safely and that everything would be okay, which meant more than they probably realized. When we arrived, Dr. Ruoff and her technician Maddie took exceptional care of Addison. They truly went above and beyond--not only performing a thorough examination to get a proper diagnosis, but also helping clean her ears and gently cleaning her bottom since she has mobility issues. They flushed the fluids from her nose and eyes as well. Every step of the way, they treated her with patience, compassion, and genuine love. I was there for a few hours, and instead of feeling rushed, I felt supported and reassured. You can tell this team truly cares about the animals they treat and the people who love them. Thanks to them, I finally have peace of mind about what's going on with Addison--and that is priceless. My wife and I brought our beardie - Panama - in a week ago today (4/19). The front desk staff was great and we were shown into a room right around our appointment time. The girl who took all of Panama's vitals was very nice and friendly. Dr. Ruoff then came in and thoroughly (and gently) examined Panamaa. She explained what she thought it might be and suggested some tests to get a full diagnosis. The pricing for tests was fully explained, and of course, we decided to have all of them. Unfortunately, it was not the news we wanted to here and Dr. Ruoff recommended that we should put him to sleep since it was a fatal condition and he was in pain. She was so kind and gentle in explaining the diagnosis and what the process would like look. Again, pricing for the procedure was fully explained. Dr. Ruoff gave us time and space to grieve and then put Panama to sleep very gently. I cannot say enough good things about our experience there, even though was an extremely difficult day. I brought my Hyacinth Macaw (Kenny) to see Dr Fitzgerald because of a large growth inside his beak, which I was extremely concerned was cancerous. After speaking to Dr Fitzgerald for a while I found out that she had done her internship at a location in the Bay Area in California, which had been the location that seen all of my birds. (Dr Brian Speers which is one of the best Avian vets in the world) Which in fact made me feel like I had come to the right place. After performing multiple tests and going over every detail there was to go over, we came up with an agreeable path forward, Dr Fitzgerald was very thorough and explain all of the options in detail, we started Kenny of a couple of different medications to get infections under control in order to take a biopsy to ensure that cancer wasn't an underlaying issue, My next visit (2 weeks later) she did another exam and the infection was just about gone and there was no need for the expansive biopsy. Kenny recovered completely and is doing great. It is such a relief to have a dr with such knowledge over seeing my birds as I did when I was back in California. I highly recommend Dr Fitzgerald and the Staff at Exotic animal hospital as they are all very professional & courteous.Thank you and see you soon. read more

Doctor Guerrera was very nice and understanding with my hamster. He got me in for a last minute emergency appointment today. Countless times I've heard "he's just a hamster" or "he's going to die anyways" well The doctor actually came up with solutions instead of just thinking we should euthanize my hamster. The doctor knew my hammy had fight in him. Doctor Guerrera prescribed my hammy some medication and scheduled a follow up. I couldn't be more thankful. Came to post an update from my original review 16 days ago. I took my hamster in to see Dr. Guerrera back in August. I was very pleased with our visit, the doctor was very amazing and tried to help my boy the best he could. Unfortunately a few days later after my original post I did have to end up putting my sweet Hammy to sleep. Doctor Guerrera was so incredibly nice and understanding. We tried our best to come up with solutions but it was just Hammys time. I couldn't thank Dr. Guerrera and his team enough. They really helped me with making the right decision. We have landed at COEAH 4 times in just 4 months! 1) After a terrible experience with an exotic pet emergency care center the day before, we had the lucky chance of finding Dr. Anna-Marie Ruoff at Colorado Exotics Animal Hospital just when we needed her! With caring and compassionate expertise, Dr. Ruoff could tell, simply by handling our parakeet, that his condition was incredibly serious and it was doubtful any treatment would bring him back. Dr. Ruoff gave us a wealth of options just in case we wanted to try, though we agreed with her and had our parakeet euthanized with us present. 2) Next, one of our house bunnies needed a second opinion on whether she needed dental surgery. COEAH's price for a second opinion was steep, though once more Dr. Ruoff was completely trustable and the way she placed our very nervous bunny at ease astounded us! Dr Ruoff determined that dental work was not needed yet and gave us a list of things to be on the lookout for. 3) Then we were back for a possible GI emergency with another of our house bunnies. Once more, Dr. Ruoff was spectacular at placing our bunny at ease and gave us a recommendation of treatments. Dr. Ruoff is always open to your questions and ideas - offering to collaborate and be conscious of your ability to care for your pet (practically & financially). Our bunny "bounced back" quickly. 4) Just today, we awoke to a new and frightening situation with our oldest parakeet. Dr. Ruoff saw us very quickly and let us know what was happening. Again, we were offered a wealth of treatment options (in case we wanted to try), though Dr. Ruoff honestly told us it take a miracle to save her. We had our parakeet euthanized with us present. Dr. Ruoff and the whole staff at COEAH are so kind and gentle and we appreciate them more than we can describe. You also are given time to process everything they are describing to you. Yes, treatment for "exotic" pets is pricey. They are specialists who had to endure very advanced training that an everyday vet does not. COEAH also has medical equipment to help with caring for the animals on-site - saving pet-parents like us from needing to travel exceptionally far to find care. Dr. Ruoff, the desk staff, the techs and absolutely everyone we have met so far at COEAH have proved to be honest, exceedingly kind and caring, open, friendly, and good listeners! Each time, we have been given the full range of possibilities for treatment, though also talked with, so we know what we can reasonably expect from each of those possibilities (pros and cons). Dr. Ruoff never wants to do more than would be beneficial for our pets. Quality of life over quantity seems to be her goal - which is our goal too. read more

I never got to see any of the vets, and I agree that this vet office seems to be all about the money, and definitely NOT about your pet. The woman who makes the appointments is possibly the meanest person I have ever encountered in my life. I think this job makes her FEEL important, and to her being mean to customers and treating the customers like they are worthless peasants gives her the feeling that she IS important. When I was trying to get my dying hedgehog seen ASAP it was full court "I don't care at all about you or your damned pet!" I had to pay a deposit AND then I also had to pay the vet fee that I missed because I had the wrong appointment time. (never followed up with an email with the date and time, and location to aoid a worried pet owner losing the paper). I begged that I could be there in 10-15 minutes and wait, but they already had my money, so why would they bother trying to see her. After all, they already got the money, right? If you care about your pet, please do your pet and yourself a favor, and keep looking. This one isn't it. read more

I thought veterinarians cared about animal welfare over money. This is another money focused vet. I drove an hour and a half from Fort Collins so that they could help my reptile because all other exotic vets in the area are closed on weekends. I made it clear my drive was long, and tried to call them to tell them I might be late due to 2 major accidents on I-25, completely out of my control, but they did not answer the phone. When I got there they declined to help my gecko, and they had taken a $50 down payment from me. They kept saying " you didn't leave a voicemail" as their excuse for why they won't help me and it's " their policy" . I was only 5 mins late. I am a broke college student who rescues reptiles. Avian veterinarians are difficult to find in the Denver area. There are quite a few veterinary clinics in town, but finding one with an expertise in birds is next to impossible. The avian vet at Homestead Animal Hospital retired a couple of years ago, so I continued searching until I found Dr. Brenna Fitzgerald, who briefly worked at Homestead before becoming an owner at Colorado Exotic Animal Hospital. Our 5-year old Congo African Grey parrot had not been to a vet in over 3 years, and she was also due for a nail clipping. I'd been taking her to a neighborhood dog-and-cat vet, but became alarmed when my bird was muted and strangely quiet for two days after her last nail clipping. I attempted to towel her a few days ago to do a simple clip and I'd never seen her respond with such fear and anxiety when I was handling her this time. I'd heard about Dr. Fitzgerald and knew she had African Greys herself. Two days ago I took Zuhri in for an exam and nail clipping. Dr. Fitzgerald was very patient with both Zuhri and me, answering my questions, while getting Zuhri used to her. My bird had been to a vet and had nail clippings before at Homestead, but later developed a fear of being handled after the hamfisted trimming by my neighborhood vet. I learned from Dr. Fitzgerald how pet birds are supposed to be treated in modern veterinary clinics, and was thrilled to see that she saw Zuhri's fear and anxiety as something also to be treated. While there, we were also able to get bloodwork, which is important to monitor in any captive species to ensure the proper nutrition and exercise regimen is being followed. Colorado Exotic Animal Hospital is 11 miles from our house, but the drive there is well worth the benefit of knowing that Zuhri is getting care from a caring, knowledgeable veterinarian who knows the species well. This review is for anyone who has a pet other than a cat or dog and is looking for a qualified and compassionate medical professional to treat and provide medical follow-up. Edit after owner's response: I have spent about $2000 at CEAH (since about April 2023 alone), and I disputed one charge of $68.94. Dr. Ruoff is the owner, and I did not get a chance to discuss my complaints with her directly. I had actually already paid $407.79 before seeing the extra charge, and asked about it. So, it does not make sense to make me out to be the irate customer who is disputing charges. The issues were deceptive practices, which will now be reported to the state licensing board, since the owner never reached out to me to see what was happened to me: The initial tech was not very clear about the exam and grooming charges not being the same thing, and that she explicitly instructed me to initial some documents, "just so I can ask about the grooming/exam fee waiver". The gaslighting responses are truly unprofessional. It is normal for customers to complain or get upset if they feel deceived. It is normal to get more upset if your concerns are not addressed effectively. Instead of taking responsibility for their communication and management style, this practice has deflected all complaints and problems as the customer's issue, without looking at any verifiable facts. I have already spent a lot of money on this practice, so it's not the charges that are the fundamental problem with this practice. -- I have no problems spending money for CEAH's vet services, but have a problem with deception and being taken advantage of, especially at a time of vulnerability when your pet is sick and you are in distress. When I raised concern about a charge, I was not asked what my concerns were nor why I thought what I did, but was immediately treated with disgust- this woman who said she groomed my rabbit was just mean and accusatory (like I am going to try to avoid a $68 charge just to screw them, when I have already spent thousands of dollars at CEAH just this year to date). This person showed no respect nor compassion to someone who was there because of a sick pet. I would have been more than happy to pay for an extra grooming if everything was done on the "up and up" (I get to see my bunn's butt before the grooming service took place and agree to a cleaning specifically for an amount charged). I really tried to communicate with her exactly why I didn't expect that certain charge *despite* initialing an electronic document (what I initialed had no charges on it but was consent to handle/treat, but the print out they had showed charges on the top of the printout which were NOT on the initialing screen), but she kept circularly repeating over and over that because I had initialed this or that so therefore I agreed to the charge because she did the work. I love my vet there, Dr. Guerra, who was the only reason I came to CEAH when he moved there, but cannot trust this practice. read more

HORRIFIC Experience- WORST experience in a vet office ever- If you are a passionate about your pets-DO NOT enter this facility. You will see the Red Flags upon taking a seat in the waiting room. The initial paperwork- on the back- has you sign/initial next to a statement that states you are aware of the negative side effects/adverse reactions on how the hospital compounds dog/cat medications for exotic animals with ZERO explanation to what you are signing. I put a question mark under this section and turned in the paperwork- and because I did this- one of the managers accompanied Fitzgerald into my appointment . First- Dr Fitzgerld has ZERO bedside manner or compassion, ZERO. Lets say you have depression/anxiety and are seriously struggling- she will LITERALLY call you crazy to your face, (because I asked her not to put alcohol on my next bird). !! You literally cannot ask Fitzgerald a simple request without her gas-lighting you and calling you names. !! I brought in 2 rescued parakeets- both with questionable swelling/possible tumor. Fitzgerald covered the first bird in alcohol to be able to see the swelling/tumor better. Alcohol is extremely toxic to birds. Fitzgerald immediately started talking about a ton of testing that needed to be done ($) and quickly came to the conclusion that the bird needed (experimental) surgery- with zero explanation on the risks, until I asked. ZERO compassion towards the animal and the risks. I then asked Fitzgerald very nicely and politely to not put alcohol on my next parakeet. Fitzgerald immediately became flushed in the face and said, "well since you know more than me, we are done here." and stormed out of the office. I stood there in complete shock, and asked the manager why is that the allowed reaction to a simple concern/request from a client. The manager then told me I was the issue and I was the one in the wrong!!! FOR SIMPLY MAKING A SIMPLE REQUEST- Truly shocking behavior from Fitzgerald that was quickly turned around on me. I was quickly gas-lighted to believe I was the problem- and because of this I became upset. !!! They will gas light you and make YOU the problem once you speak up and ask for a simple request from the doctor. !!!! I brought these two birds to my main vet who is also an avian specialist, and he recommended NO surgery for it would be too risky. My regular vet also did not use alcohol on either bird nor did I have to request none to be used. THIS PLACE JUST WANTS YOUR MONEY. What if I was wrong and I needed education on the subject- What if all I needed was a simple explanation as to why they use alcohol on birds but instead this was the outcome, shocking. Instead Fitzgerald will call you crazy and storm out of the office. If you read the other 1 star reviews and you read the reply from Colorado Exotic Animal Hospital you will see EVEN MORE RED FLAGS- The reply from this hospital to each 1 star review is SHOCKING. The replies TRULY show you how toxic the work environment MUST be at this hospital. NO company ever replies with such toxicity to reviews on google- They are typically respectful replies BUT NOT FROM THIS COMPLANY- I SHOULD HAVE READ THE REVIEWS PRIOR- I will stick to my regular vet office. I was so happy to find this place. Dr. Ruoff is amazing. My old ferret had a tumor on his head multiplying by the day. The previous vet I had months long wait just to get in for an appointment. I was hesitant at first, but so glad we made the appointment. He had a success surgery and a quick healing process, and the staff explained the procedure so well it calmed my nerves.
