Dr. Steve is an excellent veterinarian -- one of the best I have had -- but the practice he oversees has serious operational issues. On one visit, my dog had to have her blood drawn twice due to a staff mistake. At the very next visit, she was given the wrong vaccine, which is a medical error that should never happen. The front‑desk experience is also consistently poor, with long hold times and dismissive behavior when concerns are raised. I respect the veterinarian, but the clinic's staff training and procedures are unreliable, and after two consecutive errors involving my dog's care, I cannot continue bringing her here. They could have killed my dog with the sloppy vaccination mistake. read more

I have brought all my pets (and there have been quite a few!) here for over 25 years, including shots twice a week for a month, so you see a lot. The care and compassion Dr. Steve and staff have shown has always been amazing. (Dr. Tina is really great, too, but we have only seen her a few times, including my dog's recent euthanasia and she was very kind and caring.) Steve takes his time, manages your pet's care realistically and fairly and always follows up. There have been many evenings he has called well after-hours and he hasn't seemed hurried or bothered, but rather concerned and available. One thing about this clinic is that they have kept their prices fair and within your budget. I think they have to charge what the lab charges them and there isn't much they can control. Their pharmacy program is helpful and cost savings, too. I recommend them to everyone. read more

Communications with this office are atrocious! Brought in 3 cats for exams and some vaccinations. 1 cat was not feeling well so we had blood work done on him. The next day one cat had a bad reaction to her rabies shot. Lots of itching which caused her to panic. I emailed the office to see what can be done and they did not respond. We have some prednisone available which seemed to solve the problem for a couple days. After that she was fine. The other sick cat began to feel better so we weren't overly worried about the blood work. After 5 days, not having not heard back about the blood work "the next day" as promised, I inquired about the results. 5 days! The vet responded by answering questions that weren't asked. Yesterday I emailed for a refill of some prescription food. No reply. I called today and left a somewhat angry message asking for a callback. In their outgoing message, they say, "leave us a message about refills and come back in 24 hours. We WON'T CALL YOU BACK". WTF? Then I get a voicemail saying they don't call back because they "don't have the capability". WTF? I can only imagine that plenty of people show up for their food or meds only to discover they aren't ready, aren't in stock or otherwise aren't available. Imagine that! A professional business that "doesn't have the capability" to return a client's call or email. At $60 for a small bag of food, you'd think they would have the courtesy to inform you that they have it ready for you. And finally, apparently they "don't have the capability" to send reminders about annual exams or vaccinations. This had one of our cats a year late for one of his vaccines. This is all likely the fault of the front-of-house staff, but if your team lacks a professional quarterback, you will lose. They have lost us as clients because of this. Make your choices wisely when considering trusting your family pets to this dysfunctional place. There are better options out there. read more

I would really avoid them at all cost because I feel like when you don't have compassion for your fellow human being you don't have compassion for animals and the care I received was overpriced and they push things that aren't required and make money for them. Been searching around the neighborhood for a new vet as I just moved in town and let me tell you a lot haven't even called me back LOL I was recommended this one from a neighbor and I'm really glad I tried it out. My call was answered immediately and the lady was super nice helping me schedule an appointment. Also the vet and assistants where probably the most genuine people I've ever dealt with they had to hold down my monster Aussie but treated him so nice and just super assuring. I've never had a better experience at the vet and will definitely return as long as I live here! Highly recommended, the place is also very small which I personally prefer more intimate relationships when it comes to things like this. read more

I used to be SUCH A HUGE advocate and supporter of this veterinary practice. I would tell strangers about how great they are, and recommend my friends to use them for their own pets, as well. I sure wish I didn't have this experience to share with people on this platform, as I truly enjoy spreading kudos and positivity with my reviews. However, this is well deserving of a very low review, and IMO, not even worthy of being awarded a single star at all. Anyway, I have A senior cat who just turned 18 in August. He has had some upper respiratory issues for over a year now. Both Dr. Sharky's have seen him, and Steve basically told me due to his age, there is not really a treatment option bc they can't put him under anesthesia to further explore, and we can just keep him comfortable on an antibiotic so it wouldn't get worse, and keep the infection at bay. About 3 weeks ago I called to get my normal refill for my kitty (100mg doxycycline), and when I showed up to pick it up, Dr. Tina Sharky had not approved the script, so I had to speak with her. She proceeded to tell me that we needed to "explore the specialist option" that she claimed we discussed during a prior visit. Not only did she lie to my face about it, she then proceeded to prove herself wrong by grabbing the medical chart and checking it herself. The medical chart had ZERO mention of going to a specialist. At this point my cat was off his meds for a few days, and this infection/discharge has moved to his eye ball...Dr. Tina Sharky refilled his prescription for a week and a half (to get us through until the appointment I date made with the specialist, now that it was actually recommended) but the damage had been done when he was without his meds for a few days. Something I told the vet would happen if he were without and she continued to disregard. As an adult human, I have some common knowledge that when these things happen to people, and an infection or discharge is not cleared up with antibiotics, typically a steroid is introduced to try get a boost in the healing process. I suggested this to Steve Sharky on a phone call several months ago, and he said that was too risky due to his age, yet again. This morning I woke up to my sweet boy's eye extremely swollen, and spitting out green goop, and having trouble walking. I took him IMMEDIATELY to the emergency vet and spent hours there running tests, X-Rays, an ultrasound...all for $2600. And the emergency vet prescribed me STEROIDS for him! SO, the negligence of this vet office has cost me 2 months rent, or even a scooter, or something else. IF YOU VALUE THE LIVES OF YOUR ANIMALS, OR YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. read more

This animal clinic is the most professional and COVID-19 cautious clinic that I could have found for my cats. I was a bit apprehensive about not being able to accompany my cat inside the clinic, but it is necessary to keep the potential spread of the virus. Dr. Sharkey did come out to meet me after conducting a wellness exam and giving my cat the shots that he needed. He gave me a through explanations of the results of my cat's physical, as well as gave me a few pointers of things I could change at home to help my big fat boy to lose weight. This place is shockingly unprofessional and rude! I had to cancel my original appointment with 4 days advance notice. Today I called back to reschedule, and they refused appointment for my cat, saying "because you canceled, we can't see you"???? Why? They charge your credit card and keep the money if you cancel more than 1 day in advance. I gave them 4 days notice. It was absolutely nothing wrong on my part. I hope the owners see this review and take some actions, and follow up with me because this is totally unacceptable and unheard of. read more

We got a new kitten and I wanted to get him seen as soon as possible. Unfortunately Dr Sharkey was out of town so I went to see my secondary vet. Boy was that a colossal mistake. After spending an absurd amount of money, I was lighter in the pocket and heavier in confusion, concerns and questions. Several days later I was able to get in to see Dr Sharkey. What a tremendous difference. I actually left in tears because I was so relieved. Dr Sharkey and his staff continue to be the best choice for caring for our fur babies...and their humans! read more

We just moved to Denver last summer and our little feline friend needed a new vet for a check-up and to look into some dental issues. Our last vet in Detroit was at Patterson Animal Hospital, which has a high standard to live up to (see here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/patterson-dog-and-cat-hospital-inc-detroit) Dr. Sargent at Montclair was fantastic. He was very friendly, handled him well (even though our cat is the friendliest ever and lets you do whatever you want with him). The prices were incredibly affordable, and that was a nice side-note for being on a grad-student budget. I called for an appointment Monday afternoon and they got us in by Wednesday, and there really wasn't a rush. My only concern is Dr. Sargent is kind of up there in age and I'd be afraid he'll retire soon. Something tells me he'll keep doing this well into his senior years though, which is fine with me! read more

You do not need to be a vet or even a well versed dog owner to know when someone gives exceptionally poor bedside manner. I will never return to this clinic for several reasons. I had never met Dr. Sharkey before my appointment and when he came out to the waiting room he didn't introduce himself and just knelt down and started the examination IN the waiting room. He eventually sauntered over to the examination room and stood there talking to the nurse while I'm sitting there with a "deer in the headlights" look waiting to be told what to do. Once I was finally in the exam room he never once answered any of my questions forthright. He mentioned that my dog's urine was at a "1020" and he never cared to explain what he was measuring, why that was a bad number, or what kind of ailments that the number might indicate. I kept having to poke at him to elaborate on what he was thinking/doing with my dog but even that turned out to be unsuccessful. I was told to come back with two more urine samples on a separate day. (Still no mention as to what he was specifically looking for). I was charged 77 dollars for no information other than my dog was over weight by ______ lbs. He didn't even care to tell me what weight he was supposed to be at. He just spoke to my dog in a baby voice saying "You're going on a diet aren't you?!" Dr. Sharkey is obviously a kind-hearted individual but his lack of straightforwardness is unnerving and quite frankly frustrating. Not to mention that I just spent nearly 100 dollars for him to say my dog's urine was sitting at an arbitrary number. As a broke college student just trying to take care of my best friend, I really didn't appreciate the lack of professionalism that I received at the Montclair Animal Clinic. read more

After our then young puppy was due for fixing, the vet we had been using said it would be $600, plus more for pain pills. This was 8 years ago!!! Needless to say, it was time to change. I asked several neighbors who they used, and Montclair Animal clinic came up several times. I have never been sorry I changed to this clinic. We LOVE Dr. Sharkey and the crew at Montclair Animal Clinic. I knew that we'd love them when we first took our crusty, pissy rescue dog there a few years ago - he plunked a kiss on the old dog's forehead even as the dog yelped and thrashed. This was a dog that no one liked, that tried to bite everyone, feral as they come - and yet he and his staff were still so kind and compassionate. They helped us make that dog feel loved and comfortable, which in turn helped that pup become of of the coolest, calmest dogs we've ever known. It's a small thing that will never be forgotten. They were - and remain - compassionate but practical. When one dog began to have arthritis pain that seemed a little too bad, he told us what we could expect down the line. When it was another pup's time to go due to cancer, he was so kind but also didn't bog us down with thousands of dollars of options that wouldn't actually do any good. Now we take our third rescue pup to him, and we would not want it any other way. We trust him implicitly. If he says something needs to be done, we do it. We absolutely know that he's got everyone's best interests at heart. He isn't out to gouge anyone, but if it needs to be done and the money needs to be spent, he'll tell you why. The prices are reasonable and he is really good with calling you personally to tell you what's going on. It's nice to go to a business that you can trust, especially when it comes to beloved family pets. His staff are the BEST, just the best. It's so nice to go into his practice and see the same people that have known us for a few years. They are funny and kind, practical and - well, just cool. They know us, they know our dogs, and they are just amazing. I can't say enough good things about them. We've never had anything but outstanding experiences with them. You could spend your money elsewhere, going to chain vet practices. They'll charge you double just to pay for their fancy furniture - but I'm sure they're very nice. Or you can give your dollars and your trust to this practice, and feel so much happier about your pup, the people at the practice, and the care that's been given. I've been going to Montclair Animal Clinic for about a year now and have visited the office with my dog twice now. Once for an emergency and once for an annual exam. 1. The space is incredibly cramped and they feel the need to pack the room with 4 vet techs and the vet. If you have a large dog the stress levels are high enough already so being put in a coffin sized room where the vet can't even get a proper look at your dog is already a problem. 2. When the vet checked my dog, she didn't even feel him. She did a visual spot check. After asking about a specific area of concern, then, and only then, did she actually physically inspect my dog. 3. When they went to test his blood they cornered him, had one vet stand over top of him wrapping his arms around my dogs snout, and then had another holding him from the side. I have a calm dog and told them all they had to do was give him the shot. I understand they're nervous, but after the FOURTH time of the vet missing my dog's vein and my dog sitting there patiently, he finally winced. I asked them to let him go and after bringing in someone with competence, they finally were able to draw blood. 4. I called recently to ask the vet a question and was told she would call me back, she never did. Incompetent staff. Horrific clinic. Sub-par customer service. Traumatizing for any dog larger than a football. read more

My family has been going to Montclair Animal Clinic since 1999. They are attentive, sweet, caring, and professional. When our 15 year old dog had to be put down, they offered a shoulder to cry on for our entire family. And let me tell ya- it was ugly crying, with boogers and everything. A year later, we adopted two small dogs from dumb friends league and boy are they a handful. Too old to be socialized and full of anxiety, they can get crazy when we take them to the vet. Dr. Sharkey and the staff work their magic and get them to calm down and are all very patient. Their hours are great and you don't have to wait days to get seen. This clinic is only getting three stars because as far as vets go, they fell short in helping to solve the skin issues going on with my dog. The reason why I believe they fell short is because I visited another vet when the problem got worse and felt 100% better taken care of. While her issue is not completely resolved, the reason I feel like I wasn't taken care of at Montclair is because the vet took one route on what could be causing the problems in my dog. *Whereas* the other vet I went to looked at her breed (also gave me specific warnings on her breed like weight gain and putting sunscreen on her cute little nose) to begin listing the likelihood of each issue. While Montclair pursued her issue as mites, the other vet opened up the greater possibility of allergies (as her breed is more susceptible to such) and some other angles. I think Montclair didn't equio me as a new dog owner to 1. Understand her as a dog better (I received a free first vet visit from the shelter) 2. Give me tools to help solve the issue. I really can't afford to pursue a problem with one solution until we realize that solution may not be correct, as a suggestion Montclair, include me in your thought process as a vet. Let me know, looking at the symptoms, what kind of possibilities you are listing in your head. Give me the tools to solve the problem or things to look out for so we can get to the bottom of it. read more

Dr. Sharkey is amazing. He is patient and understanding with our jack Russell who has had some behavioral issues. Another vet told us to put peanut down after adopting him from the pound, but Dr. Sharkey went out of his way to help us make peanut work for our family. He recommended a great behavioral trainer and has made accommodations for peanut when he needs care in the office so that we don't cause a scene. He's also honest and very reasonably priced- he will say when he feels you need a specialist (peanut has developed a few tumors- some of which dr. Sharkey removed and one which really needed a surgeon.) The office is nothing fancy, but this is a A+ practice. read more

I've been taking my dog here for years, since before the new ownership. The old vet was great and the new vet is also very kind and has taken great care of our aging dog. My dog gets really scared when we go and the vet kisses her on the head sometimes to make her comfortable. This vet is no frills and is totally legit. Dr. Sharkey and his staff were terrific. We brought in our newly adopted dog for a shelter check up. Everyone in the office was friendly and professional. When he was examining Ellie, Dr. Sharkey treated her like she was his own dog. He got down on the floor at her level and he was so kind and caring. He gave us lots of information and carefully explained all of his treatment recommendations. He was personable to us as well. All that and his fees were extremely reasonable.
