They are located off Waterman near Mel Dogs in an industrial area with several other auto businesses it seems. I have had my regular maintenance done here without issues. My family has been coming to Expert Automotive for years. They are family owned and honest. They specialize in Honda's, Acura, Toyota, Lexus, Mazda, Nissan, Infinity, and Subaru. I have had my car in for many oil changes and the 2 hundred thousand miles maintenance! YIKES! They have done a few other maintenance stuff as well. They have been very fair in price. This is a small family business. I would suggest making a call, give them your car information and concerns, and make an appointment! This will give them adequate time to help you and your concerns go smoothly. They have a waiting area for you if you have to wait. It's best to just drop off and come back! I called and easily made an appointment after I received a large $$$ quote from the Mazda dealership for maintenance for my CX5. I brought my car in for evaluation today at my appointment, and the techs were able to take a look and give me their opinion. I spoke to Joe, who was very helpful in answering all my questions and explaining everything to me, and I appreciated that they were honest in what they recommended--they told me that some of the parts could wait to be fixed while other more time urgent ones like the battery, should be prioritized. The initial recommendation I received from Mazda was to fix a couple items urgently, which would've cost me thousands, but fortunately Joe was able to tell me that some of the parts had some life left in them. DO NOT bring your vehicle here! I had my car towed here few months ago was told that the entire AC unit needed replacing or it would not be driveable. Paid $2618.92 close to $3K for a "brand new AC unit". I didn't use the AC till the weather got warmer this summer.. turned it on and it was not cold at all! In fact it was so hot in my car after substantial time more than 20 minutes on and even on long hours of driving that my head was pounding from the heat. When I first voiced the issue Joe made it sound like I must be mistaken but he'd check it out. When he did they found a part leaking and the coolant had leaked out (this is after I had gone back after the initial installation to have them test for leaks using some pink dye to make sure everything was good to go!). They did some repairs but said I'd have to come back another round as they had to order other failed parts for the AC! I questioned Joe saying I paid a lot nearly $3K for a brand new AC unit that is not working.. how can brand new parts not work?! He rudely retorted that "brand new parts fail all the time!" I am absolutely convinced that he gave me a refurbished unit and lied about it. In fact I had a dream that they were doing shady dishonest business repairing my AC. I should have heeded the warning in the dream and taken my car somewhere else! To Top it Off today before I went to pick up my car after the 3rd round of repairs for the AC, Joe calls me to tell me that a person who was dropping off parts hit the back of my vehicle while it was parked in their lot. Joe did NOT SAY SORRY OR APOLOGIZE ONCE that my car was hit or take responsibility for not taking care of my vehicle while it was on his property! (In fact when I arrived later inspecting it he said it wasn't so bad just body work!) On the phone he said he had the video footage of the hit and run type of scenario said that the person responsible "didn't realize" she hit my vehicle. He said they happen to be a body shop said he called them and would give me their number. He said he could show me the video of my car being hit. I was at mom's physical therapy appointment told him we would Uber over and I asked for a three way phone call with the body shop to make sure they'd set up a rental car during repairs. Joe said, "Sure, we'll be here till closing at 5pm." We arrived at 4:50pm and Joe REFUSED to help and said, "We're closed!" He walked back his word and said his shop was closed and he couldn't show me the video footage of my car being hit! I said there's still 10 minutes, you gave your word and can at least do this three way call to set up the rental car that he promised. It only takes a minute to make a phone call. He got rude and huffy adamantly refused to make the call and asked me if I can walk into Walmart 10 minutes before closing and expect to buy something?! I was livid! Absolutely! Truth is he didn't want to take any responsibility for the situation regarding the car rental and said I'd have to talk to the body shop myself. He lied saying that he never agreed to a three way call. I confronted him for doing shady dishonest business for charging a high price for a "brand new AC unit" for giving me old parts and a non working AC unit. He lied of course and when I called him out for lying he threw the paperwork at me and demanded that I "get off his property" and threatened to call for me to be taken off his property"!!! So all in all this was the ABSOLUTE WORST experience I've ever had at an auto shop. I am completely convinced that Joe is doing shady dishonest business overcharging and pricing "Complete AC units" as new while ordering old refurbished units and failing parts! Moreover Joe acted like an absolute -----! He was nice upfront taking the money but was absolutely rude and would not take responsibility for my vehicle being damaged under his care on his property. I asked him if this happens.. cars being hit when they are brought here?! He said three times it's happened and he's surprised it doesn't happen more given what a busy lot they are! If you want to overpay for dishonest used failing AC units and parts, risk your vehicle being hit while leaving it at this shop for work being done, then be refused any assistance, have paperwork thrown at you and threatened off the property before closing, then consider this place! In the end Joe gave me the phone number to a serviceman of the body shop that hit my vehicle dropping off parts here and told me to call him myself. Joe said he can't talk to him as it's not his car! That was the help I got after spending close to $3K here! So now I have a dented scraped up car with a non optimal AC unit! Worse than what I had going in! My Subaru cross trek had a heck Sweek, like worn out lumber truck, I missed diagnosed it as struts and foolish ordered new struts and put them the back and didn't solve the problem, of course now it's one of over dozens rubber joints from the many suspension arms. With the help of other candid next door app reviews and getting " almost " ripped off at other shops on "Riverside across from Cemetary" . Expert not only diagnosed the faulty rubber boot fixed issue for half the many as said shop, who misdiagnosed and charged 165 for that and wanted another 2k for repairs that wasnt the issue Expert is awesome!!! read more

We had a power steering pump go bad on our 2008 Outback. I took it here because I heard good things and they were able to take the car in that day. This was convenient so I decided to have the car towed there. I then got a call back later about the estimate and was blown away by the pricing of the part. The part was nearly $500 and it was aftermarket cardone, which is good in some applications but not steering pumps for this model. I knew it wouldn't work. The hourly rate wasn't too bad but it too seemed a bit high. With inflation, it didn't surprise me as much as the part. When I inquired further about the part brand and price, the guy had a tone and began talking down to me like I don't know my car. He went on to tell me how many years he's been doing this and how they don't charge you double the price of the part because middlemen get paid and time it takes to get the part to the shop. It was only a few hundred dollars cheaper than OEM but I decided to let them have at it since they seemed so reassured it would work. Sure enough, the aftermarket pump didn't work! So they got an aftermarket pump from Napa. They did not charge me extra but it did take longer to get done. This part works but it whines really loudly. It won't last like I told them but "what do I know" from the guy who's been doing this for decades. This service was performed late last summer and I haven't been back to "fix it" given that same guy or someone else will tell me they know better. The guy I picked it up from was friendly. I never got any names so I can't say who was the jerk and who wasn't. I will only go back if it breaks under warranty. Otherwise, I will never go back here. Their prices are outrageous as it is and then they overcharge for items they didn't need or use. I wonder how often that happens to customers that don't realize it? These guys have been pretty fantastic. I have had several suspension issues with my Honda Civic, one the dealer couldn't figure out, and these guys did. They are really good communicator and explain things so I have been able to understand them. I was at a different mechanic shop earlier today and was upset to learn that something Expert Automotive worked on was not done correctly and nearly caused damage to parts of my vehicle. I immediately went on over back to them to show them the piece that was damaged and the owner Joe went out of his way to correct the issue. He said that he owns up to anything that goes wrong in his shop and will go out of his way to make it right. And that is exactly what he did. Joe even went to the other mechanic shop where my car was to take a look at everything to see what had gone wrong. He came back with a new piece so that they were able to fix it. This shows me that Joe and his company care about their customers and are willing to own up to everything that may go wrong and ultimately make it right. We took 2 cars to Expert Automotive. One was having issues with the new battery not holding a charge for too long (ended up being the battery.) The second car needed new headlights. They were helpful and knowledgeable. Everything they did was wonderful. However, I'm writing this review because of what happened days later. We received a letter in the mail that had a $120 check written to us from them. With the check was a note that basically said they reviewed the invoice later and realized they charged us $120 too much. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I do know that we never said anything and were completely satisfied with everything they did. Yet, they still sent this to us completely on their own without so much as one word from us. We had no idea. Seriously, name another car repair shop that would EVER do this all on their own. That is by far the most honest thing that has ever happened to me by a business. Not only will they ALWAYS get my business from now on, but I feel I need to let everyone know this by posting this review. If you have ever wondered if a car repair shop is treating you fairly, then next time bring your car to Expert Automotive, so that you never have to wonder again. I was hesitating on writing this, but I feel it needs to be said. I took my car here and told them my car overheated and asked them to look into it. They told me that my head gasket had been blown. I, of course, got very scared and nervous, but my car was drivable which I thought was very odd. Typically if your head gasket is blown, the car is not even drivable. They told me to take to the dealer and it would cost around $3500 most likely to fix, maybe more. I ended up taking it to another mechanic in Sac. They had my car for a week and checked everything and figured out the overheating issue. It was NOT a blown head gasket. It was just a radiator cap that was old and needed to be replaced. It's been nearly 2 months and I haven't had any issues with my car since. This establishment clearly didn't take the needed time to look into my issue but certainly charged me for their services and diagnosed incorrectly. I will not take my car here again. I recommend you don't either. read more

It's an ugly feeling when, as consumers, we have no recourse for horrible service. You feel helpless. After reading the great reviews here, I felt really confident in taking my truck to the folks at Expert Auto. My 2009 Nissan Frontier was sputtering pretty badly and the check engine light was coming on. I live about 6 miles from this shop and when I say that is the LONGEST 6 miles ever?? I white knuckled it all the way to the shop with the threat of my truck sputtering out at every stop light. It was soooooo stressful! But I made it to the shop and they let me know that they would check it out and fix the problem. I received a call a day or so later letting me know that bc my truck was a 2009, whatever machine they had couldn't accurately diagnose the problem but from what they could tell replacing some piece (I can't remember what) should fix the problem. So I paid them $800 to replace the piece and change my spark plugs. I picked up my truck after the work was done and ON MY WAY HOME the car continued to sputter as if they had done NOTHING. I called them to let them know and they told me to bring it back in. I talked to the owner and he assured me that in his many years of experience that they could figure it out based on the piece that was replaced the first time. But this means I have to make work arrangements, white knuckle it back to the shop, get an Uber to go back to work and home, etc. It's not an easy thing for me to just "take it to the shop". Anyway, I take it back and they charge me another $400 ---"just parts" (yeah, right!), to replace something else. I go pick up my truck...and it seemed to be fine...for a few days. About 5 days after I pick it up, I notice it sputtering every once in a while. For another week or so I thought maybe I was imagining it. Like maybe it was just normal 2009 truck behavior. But it got progressively worse. Unfortunately, at this time I was preparing for a work trip out of the country so I couldn't deal with it. I just parked my truck. Upon returning I drove the truck once or twice (no more than 5 miles at a time) and the sputtering was completely back and the check engine light came back on. I called them back and the "syrupy sweet" guy on the phone seemed to have a hard time believing that the same problem that I originally came in with was still happening...that makes TWO OF US MY GUY!! Anyway, he says to bring it in and IF THE WARRANTY COVERS it they will check it out. Dude!! I just pretty much GIFTED you guys $1200 and my truck is EXACTLY the same as the day I brought it in...and you're talking about IF the warranty covers it? I hate this place!! My thing is, if you can't fix it just LET ME KNOW! How is it legal for you to just take $1200 from me and I walk away with NOTHING????? You can just scam me and the only thing I can do is give you a "bad review"??? It's BS!! So yeah, I guess my next step is to take it somewhere else and start over. UGH. read more

[Edit] Received a call from the owner the day after I stopped by to ask about all this (at 7:40AM). He was unhappy about the "accusal" in this review. He said they don't replace these nuts, and he was going to check the tapes. He asked if I'd update the review if he could show the stuck nut wasn't replaced. I said I would. Later that day, he said he didn't have the incident on tape, but his guy said he didn't touch it, though he admitted to replacing *one* of the nuts. The fact is, this car has had a long, hard life. Everything is worn under the hood, but only one of the valve cover nuts was not brand new. Ultimately, I appreciate the owner backing his guy, but the facts don't line up with the story.[/Edit] I hate having to update this review, but my experience was very poor. All anyone ever wants is an honest mechanic, and welp, I guess I'm back to looking again. My late father-in-law's '88 Civic DX (D15) had a slight oil leak to the spark plug tubes. I replaced the valve cover gasket and tube seals, but I learned there are also tube seals under the rocker arm. If you replace the rocker seals, you might as well adjust the valves. I don't have that expertise, so I called these guys up to do the job. Doesn't look like a big deal if you know how to adjust valves, so hoped it'd be a simple job for anyone with experience. I've been a vocal proponent for Expert Auto for years since they helpfully referred me elsewhere for my last del Sol project. We've referred neighbors and friends, so we called and set the appointment, actually eager to give them business and not stress about the repair on the old Family Civic. A day or two prior, I get a call to verify the year. '88. I'm told they don't really work on cars prior to '98, because parts get brittle. I understand that, and am willing to pay extra to replace any incidental hose or whatever that might be brittle. Just removing the valve cover (I just did this easily) and the rocker arm assembly (something like 8 bolts). Nothing crazy. Anyway, the appointment stands. My wife and I rearrange our work schedules to drop the car off. They quote around $500 for the job. That's fine. We ask them to let us know if there are any incidentals we should address "while we're at it" as we want to keep the car in passable mechanical condition. They call us at the end of the day saying they "just pulled it in" and one of the valve cover posts was spinning in place. "Someone" (implication me, since I said I just replaced the seal) overtorqued the nut, so they can't get it off. They tell me it's the drivers-side rear nut. They can't get the valve cover off, so they're done, come pick up the car. I only have simple hand tools, including a torque wrench. I didn't over torque anything. My wife and I rearrange our work schedules again to pop in the following morning. They explain they couldn't get that specific nut off without drilling it out, and they won't do that. They want $30 for the time spent. Okay, fair enough, paid. I get the car home, and can see three of the valve cover nuts are shiny and new, including the "stuck" nut on the drivers-side rear. Wait a second, if they couldn't get this nut off because it was "overtorqued" and the post was "spinning in place" as verified on the phone by two people, how is this nut new? The two situations cannot both be true. I get the nut cut off, and it's as you see in my photo. This new nut they installed has no threads. It's defective or stripped. How do you get a nut with no threads on a post? Not with hand tools. Someone used an air or power tool to BRAP that nut on the post. No wonder they couldn't get it back off. With this nut cut off, we found the post doesn't spin at all. We simply put a new nut onto the post, and it's perfectly fine. I did an early shift today to get into the shop before they closed to ask what gives here and show them their defective part. I've always known them as an honest and reputable shop, and wanted to give them a chance to explain. No responsibility was taken. I was told in a sing-song voice the person I wanted to talk to "had just left," and he took a note for someone to call me tomorrow. I'm literally holding the invoice, but he never asks for the invoice number or another reference. We're extremely disappointed. They turned effectively "blank check" job(s) into a waste of everyone's time based on an apparent lie and ruined my trust in their shop. Guess I'll have to refer people elsewhere. TL;DR: One of two things happened here. 1) Either Expert Auto didn't want to do a job, and instead of telling me, they feigned it and wasted everyone's time (and my money)... 2) ...or at least one person lied to me about what they did, and they wouldn't own their mistake. Any shop can lie to you and make up excuses, but for such a well renowned shop to blow smoke is especially disappointing. read more

I recently visited expert automotive for a major service for my Lexus. The dealership wanted to charge me an arm and a leg for preventative maintenance. I took my car to expert automotive to perform the service and to my surprise they did not try to price gouge me. They literally did a check of the whole car and suggested what was needed and what was not. I was pleasantly surprised at the low cost to perform the maintenance and appreciated the fact that I wasn't being sold something I did not need. They have excellent responses to their customers. They don't do any heavy engine work or repair and they don't replace engines. They diagnosed a blown head gasket but couldn't repair the problem. They suggested Elk Grove Transmission for engine repairs and or replacement. I called for an appointment and have to pay for a diagnostic again. All said and done Expert Automotive should have given me a discount for their diagnosis or they should have made arrangements to have the shop they recommended actually repair my engine or replace it. read more

I normally leave no review if I don't have a good experience. But I think what happened to us today worth mentioning: we drove our car there yesterday and it was totally dead today after we declined the service. We went to this place last June, paid $689 for a new alternator and battery. The day I picked my car, I had to start it 3 times, something never happened before. Thinking it maybe a temporary problem and because of pandemic, I drove the car home, feeling grateful that it ran again. For the next 11 months, the problem never went away. We only used the car a few hundred miles, mostly moving it once a week to keep it running. Now being fully vaccinated, we decided to get the problem fixed. So we drove the car to the shop yesterday morning. My husband explained the problem and the guy who attended the counter went to the car and tested it twice. Both times, the car started with no problem (it only has the problem after not running for overnight or longer). So we left the car with them. In the afternoon, my husband got a call from the shop saying they need to replace the starter for over $400. We did not want to spend this money so my husband told the guy not to do it. We decided to take the car home. But today when we went there to get the car, we were told the car wouldn't start anymore. It's totally dead with no power or electricity. In the end, we towed the car home. I did not trust them the first time because of the battery change they wanted (as we just had the battery replaced about one year ago). So I did not leave a review then. I saw good reviews here but that's definitely not what we got. read more

They are completely honest and listen to your input and help you make the right choices. I took some time off from owning a Honda / Acura. About 10 years ago that changed. I had some issues with a dealership recently and had an estimate that was pure crazy. I knew it was time to connect with these folks again. I made an appointment to have my car inspected for an estimate and saved thousands of dollars over what the dealership insisted was critical work to have done. They also service, Acura, Toyota and Lexus. You can have your warranty work done hear and recognize some real savings. I wish I had realized that sooner. I can't imagine how much more I have paid to the dealership over the years. Fortunately the cars they service are very reliable and don't cost an arm and a leg to fix.
