During the time span of two and a half months, I rented from Express Rent A Car. Overall it's worth it, well deserved four stars, here's why: 1. You are required to have $600 cash deposit, I was fully unaware of this as I just flew in and was expecting to rent from the airport but things didn't go as planned. Long story short, I was shuttled to the nearest ATM so I could easily pull $600 to secure my deposit. 2. The cars given to you are in used condition but overall great. They inspect the car with you there, I suggest you THROUGHLY inspect the car, is it clean? Are the seats attached? Does the a/c work? When was the last oil change? Take a picture of your gas and mileage before leaving the lot. When I received the first car, the seat attachments were missing. We were both unaware, as this was my first time renting and they don't usually drive the cars as daily's. I found out by my 4 year old car seat moving forward while braking. I informed Express immediately and was told to bring the car in so it could be looked at and then I was accommodated with another car in replace of that one. The issue was resolved but the risk was high but had they known of the issue, as well as me, before driving off the lot, they would have not issued me the car. The cars are not handed to you on full gas. I was given a total of 3 different cars. The first 2 on empty and the last one over half. I rented out every week and then once for 2 weeks. I also return the last car on a full tank, their policy is to return the car at what you were handed. 3. The price varies on the car. I have paid $274- $267 a week and the one time I rented for 2 weeks it came out to $534. WAY cheaper than renting out twice the amount at an airport rental. 4. Location. Express is a few blocks across from the airport rental cars. They will offer to pick you up from the airport or you can go by your own form of transportation. I paid a total of $20 including the tip from uber, without the tip it would have been $6. 5. Variety selection on cars from your regular sedan car to SUV/ trucks to a mustang. Prices do vary. I was tempted to upgrade to a suv because it had Bluetooth but you're paying twice the amount for a sedan for just one week. Most of the cars do not have Bluetooth, a few do, the more up with technology the more likely the price will be up. Although, I just went and spent $20 extra at a store for a radio bluetooth transmitter to connect my phone to the car with Bluetooth. Well worth it. A few things I recommend: 1. make sure the contract you are signing is matched to the t: mileage, gas, condition. 2. Take pictures of the car before you leave to compare when you return it. 3. Ask and confirm on the contract, how many mileage a day you are allowed. 4. Double check your rental agreement. I have no issues, the mileage I was told would be allowed would not match the agreement and when I asked I was informed the mileage in the agreement did not apply. I was given my $600 deposit back in cash yesterday 09/28/24 after turning the car in. This place is definitely a place you would want to try out whether if you're from here or just visiting. Especially if you're trying to save. I've rented a Toyota Corolla, accommodated with the Nissan Rogue, and was switched with a Mitsubishi Lancer. read more

I have been renting from this company for many years (over 10 years), and I appreciate their low prices and customer service. I have found them to be honest and extremely helpful. Yes, the cars are older than the ones that one can rent st the national and international chains but the price is also 1/2 to 1/4 less. The only time I rent from another company is when I have a one way rental to Los Angeles and must drop off, at LAX. Otherwise, I give all of my business to Express Rent A Car. My car worked reliably during the rent time and I did not encounter any problems that require assistance (so I don't have anything to comment about their assistant service). After some shoddy service from one of the airport rental places, I stumbled across the site for Express Rent A Car. It was -NO HASSLE-. It was so easy that I was suspicious. I went in and WOW.. they had a car for me. Don't be expecting a model that is only a year or two old. Expect a clean, decent car. They were kind, civil and very courteous while I was in the office (despite my brain dead responses). I would never again recommend this business to friends or relatives. I had read the reviews and decided to take a chance. I wanted to try this place to support a small business & cheaper rates. Also, to avoid standing in long lines at the airport rental center. I now realize why this business has cheap rates because their business is unprofessional and they don't care about their customers. I booked one month in advance & called three days before to confirm date & time. I took a Lyft from the airport to their business which I found their place was closed. They had a sign on the window "went to the airport back in 10 minutes". I figured no problem because it was 10:45AM and I was set to pick-up@11. I decided to wait outside standing in the hot weather of San Diego. There was another customer also waiting and said he had been waiting since 9:43AM. I called the office numerous times and no answer, so I waited until noon. I had a Lyft take me back to the airport to rent a car from Enterprise (got a Costco member discount). I get a call from the owner at 12:15 as I am getting a rental at Enterprise telling me my car was ready and she was waiting for me to pick it up. I forgot to mention, the car waiting for me in their driveway had a big dent on the driver side and it was very dirty. I could not believe they would let me drive off in that car! Anyhow, I told her I waited for more than one hour and I had called their office with no call back. I said that was "unprofessional". Well, I guess the owner did not like I said that because she went off on me. She said she had an emergency and had to leave. She said she had a car stolen, so she had no choice but leave. She said "what do you want me to do?". I told her she had my number and could have called to say there would be a delay or cancel me. Also, I told her the sign on the window was misleading, gone 10 minutes Vs. more than one hour is just wrong!!! I told her because of this it got me behind schedule and I paid for 2 Lyft rides. I could have made other arrangements instead of waiting around. My time is just as important. She did not seem to care nor ever apologized. She just said "do you want the car or not"! She went on to say "why am I wasting my time arguing with you?". I said I agree and I ended the call. It makes me wonder how they take advantage of college students not knowing any better that customer service is just as important as cheap rental rates. Also, why are they renting dirty and damaged cars. I think the owner could have handled it in a professional manner. Sorry they had a car stolen, but that is the business you are in. I don't like to say negative comments because it is too much energy, but this was one I could not forgive myself to ignore. There was no waiting at Enterprise and it was quick. Car broke down on the day I was to return and had to use my own funds to get the car checked, towed. Car alarm went off when I opened passenger door without me knowing the car had an alarm and did not have the key fob to turn off. Not only was the car a piece of crap, when we returned it, the woman at the desk was screaming at us telling us she wouldn't give us our deposit back because we didn't fill up with enough gas. We filled up the amount that the paper told us to. She screamed that she doesn't give a f*** about this job so she doesn't care about whether or not we get money back. After she took the car, the slammed the door in our face and told us to get the F out. She made a scene yelling and cursing at us in front of another customer, who I hope we helped save from spending his money there. There was no manager present and we couldn't talk on the phone to them. We were supposed to get a Toyota Camry or something similar, and when they checked the car out it had an oil change light on. They asked if we were ok with it, to which we said no and they gave us a mustang instead. This car is much smaller than a Toyota sedan, and we hardly had room for our stuff. The car smelled of smoke, and was incredibly beat up inside. Didn't expect the car to be brand new, but also didn't expect a RENTAL CAR to have 120,000+ miles on it. The key fob was dying and there was no other way to open the trunk. The tire pressure light came on almost as soon as we started driving. We had to get the tire fixed when we got to our destination, and the tire pressure light continued going off on our drive back home. There was a rip in the convertible hood, causing our trunk to get wet from rain. The tires had no tread which is a huge safety hazard. No windshield wiper fluid either. I rented from here about a year and a half ago the summer of 2015, and I rented a Toyota Camry for about 5 months from them until I got my new car because my last one had been totaled. I needed a place that would accept a cash deposit and even though it was 500$, I got that back at the end and all was fine! If you're coming in for a trip to San Diego and have good credit and a credit card, then I'm sure you can have a nicer car elsewhere but this place is still great to use. What I liked: I had to change the date i needed a rental. The lady made sure i had a car. I said i wanted the cheapest car, didn't care what it looked like. She said she only had an MR2. cool i thought. Yeah it was older and a bit beat up but it ran and it was stick ... vroom vroom All was well but on the day i drove down to turn it in What i didn't like: on the 94 .... WOOSH! the convertible top came loose some how and scared the s*&% out of me. I wasn't sure if i should try to clip it back on. I called the company and told them what happened and the lady said the top should be fine. When I arrived at the rental place, a bit shaken, the lady came out and said, "the clip is broken." I went on to repeat my story and how i had called from the side of the freeway. Well basically i was accused of breaking it. That's when i lost it. Be aware before rent a car here! I used to rent a car every month, but they showed up being not trustworthy with their prices. I was paying $450 every month for a Ford Fiesta, I remember very well that I chose the first option because I'm use to compact cars, but I realized some months later that the compact cars, like mine, had dropped their prices, then I asked them about it, and they told me that the website was wrong and not upgraded. Ok, but now after 5 months later the prices are still the same on the website. And since I have to do a quick trip to Brazil in the middle of the month, I wouldn't be able to come back on due day, so I would have to sign for two months, since less than a month is more expensive, I asked if they could follow what was in the website, because it was two months for $375, the same compact option (ford focus or similar), that's my option! And they told me that it wouldn't be possible with my car (???), that I had to switch with another one (like an old Toyota or Corola) but why?! I felt that they just didn't want to admit that they were wrong, and got mad and stubborn because I was trying to show what was written on the website, and this is very unprofessional and unethical, if the website says $375, that's what it's supposed to be, otherwise it's fake advertising. They tried to give a lot of excuses and said things like the internet was not their business (???), that they don't control what's on the website, that it wasn't their problem, a lot of "no" answers, and I just felt that they took advantage of me this whole time, just to get more money. I asked if they could talk with the owner to change the website if that wasn't the real deal, and they told me that they were in the business for 30 years like that, and it's not because of someone like me that they would change, made me feel like I was no one, just a number, and this completely ruined my day, the lack of empathy and the fake prices. I was supposed to pay $750 for the two months, and they made me pay $900, this is so wrong, like I was stolen, but I needed the car at that moment, but after that I decided not renting there anymore and I'm here to warn you if you're willing to rent a car in this place. NEVER TRUST THIS BUSINESS! First, they tried to rent us a car with bald tires. I noticed and asked for a different car. No problem, so we leave with the new car get about 3 hours away had to stomp on the brakes to avoid a car and the whole car VIOLENTLY VIBRATED. So we call and ask if we can take it to a shop to get it fixed at our destination. They're answer, NO! we won't help you. Even though we now know the brakes are unsafe. They're solution just drive extra slow. When you rent a car you expect it to be in a safe running condition. Clearly that is not the case here. Management OBVIOUSLY does not care about the safety of their customers. Now my whole vacation will be inconvenienced by having to deal with an unsafe car. read more
