What a relief not to worry about this crucial part of the our BBQ! I called them a few days ahead, and they had the beef ready for pickup right on time. They also provided BBQ sauce, sliced onions and horseradish. They even loaded it into the car for me! The pit beef was a huge hit! The food quality is absolutely superb! Am slowly doing a Maryland Pit Beef tour. This was pretty good. Ordered pit beef sandwich, which was very good, and ribs, where were really really good. I'll take away two half stars away for (1) they said 15 minute wait for the ribs, but was more like 30 minutes (worth the wait,.however) (2) the pit beef sandwich could have used some sauce, maybe a bit of horseradish but we didn't think to ask for any. My dad was in the neighborhood and decided to bring some carryout home for lunch. I wish he would have kept driving. The fries were burnt and soggy with grease. The four fries we ate that weren't burnt tasted like old grease and had a weird aftertaste. We threw them all in the trash, as they were inedible. The Pit Beef sandwich was okay, but nothing to write home about. The sandwich had huge chunks of beef which made it hard to eat since they kept falling off the sandwich. The sauce was okay. I had been passing this place for a few months before I finally got a chance to try it. I usually go all the way to Baltimore for pit beef, and so when I saw this place in Odenton there was no way I could pass it up. I was coming back from the antique shop up the street with my family, and decided to check it out. The line wasn't crazy, but it was steady from the time we pulled, and the same when we left. One lady stopped us to to give some advice and tell us how good the food was here. It's safe to say that we were expecting great things. The people working the counter were very friendly, and were patient with us as first timers, that were trying to get together a large 6 person order. The wait was about 15 minutes, but we were shaded and had some wind blowing so it was okay. I even ordered a snow cone for the wait which was really good. We ended up ordering a rib dinner, bbq chicken sandwich dinner, double footlong with chili and cheese, 2 half smoke, pit beef sandwich, pit nuggets, and some corn nuggets. The break down: The ribs seemed to have no seasoning on the meat except the sauce. Once you got past the sauce the meat was a bit bland. The pit beef was dry, and there was no sauce offered, in sight or given with the sandwich to help it out. The double footlong was just 1 footlong cut in half, which may have been a mess up in the kitchen, but still it wasn't anything out of this world. The pit nuggets, which the name alone makes you think that they have there own thing they do with the nuggets, but nope, just regular old chicken nuggets. So why call them pit nuggets? The mac and cheese was maybe the worst i've ever tasted, and had a strange after taste. One taste and the 3 orders were thrown away. The fries are really good, they reminded me of boardwalk fries, and the corn nuggets were also tasty. The stand out at this shop was easily the Snow Cone I had during the wait. The ribs, and the pit beef sandwich were discarded after barely being touched, we thew away more money then we ate at this place. I was really shocked that it ended up being this way. I gave them a 3 star rating because of how good the service was, and because outside of my families experience it was easy to see that alot of people really like this place. I want to be brutally honest I consider myself a food connoisseur. I ordered $75.10 worth of food which included one rack of ribs 20 wings macaroni and cheese mashed potatoes and gravy and collar greens. The collar greens were decent but I can tell that they were from can. As for the rest of the food it was absolutely terrible for the price. I will drive a farther distance next go round. ---3.5 Stars--- With a name like Expressway Pit Beef, I decided to make a pit stop to fill up on protein after my workout. Instead, the Yellow flag must've been out b/c the food took some time. Still, I'll wait for good meat. Tofu parading around as meat, on the other hand.... Food - Shane claims to have a rib shack, but this place is more like a shack than Shane's Rib Suite in a Strip Mall. The ribs are country style ribs rather than spareribs, so they are very fatty and have smaller bones. The 1/2 rack for 2 (w/ FFs, + 2 small sides = $15) was tasty, though it made me feel rather huge since i could easily eat it by myself. It was an hour till closing time, so I was disappointed that they were out of Pit Pork, so I settled for the Pit Beef. The roll was tasty and the beef was tender and flavorful. The fries are freshly cut and fried, which reminds me a lot of Five Guys fries. The mac salad was great but the coleslaw spent way too much time in the food processor and was soaked in sugar, water, and mayo, which normally isn't a bad thing but in this case it was horrible. I believe they use Heinz BBQ sauce or some other packaged sauce, which is pretty basic. Service - The workers here are really endearing. Being a wannabe BBQ Master in training, I know that when you BBQ, you sweat, and the workers here don't work in an A/C kitchen - they have a few fans to keep them cool. In fact, after they completed my order, one of the workers walked next door to 7-11 to get some Gatorade. Something about that just struck a chord in my cholesterol-laden, BBQin on the weekends heart. So even though it was hot outside and I waited about 25 minutes for my food, I didn't feel a bit of frustration. Location - About 5 minutes from the 175 Exit off of 32; so it's not too far from Columbia. They do have outdoor dining but it's right next to ACE Hardware's cardboard recycling, top soil, and mulch - not exactly my idea of fine dining. I think that's getting a little TOO authentic with the "eating BBQ in my own backyard." So I recommend getting it to go! A little out of the way, but great BBQ nonetheless. They also have catering services - my wife has had their catering before and they bring grills/smokers out to the site and cook the food fresh. Once I try the Pit Pork, I'll update this review. Pit Beef... It was kinda bland, not seasoned enough, had to douse it with bbq sauce and threw the tasty slaw on top to make it edible. The beef was cooked mid rare and was moist, but not flavored which probably is the recipe for this joint. Props though for the juicyness of the sandwich. For under $10 I got a good sized sandwich, small order of yummy cole slaw, bag o' fries 5 guys style, and sweet tea. That is not bad at all! Reason being that it is like deli meat that is smoked. They also only have white buns, which I can't have. Best meal I've had near Ft Meade in ages. My date ordered the pit beef meal and I ordered a BBQ sandwich. My guy slathered on a little horseradish had only good things to say about his sandwich. The bbq was nicely seasoned and had just the right amount of sauce. The fries were hot and fresh, but a bit greasy for my tastes. The potato salad was excellent, but the portion was a little small. This is a picnic, not a restaurant...you order and pick up at the window and have a seat at the picnic tables, eat in your car, or carry your food away. I cannot believe I have driven by this gem a thousand times and only went last Thursday and oh by the way back on Friday. This is old school BBQ where you stand outside and order then eat there on a picnic table or like me take it home. Their BBQ ribs are the best I have ever eaten, not just around here but anywhere. What a great local gem! I've had Expressway twice now both a little non traditional than a regular patron would have. The first was catering for a friends wedding. They supplied all the pit beef/pulled pork and chicken we could eat. The staff was wonderful, and very accommodating. Really great BBQ! The owners are wonderful and are normally there and that's who you speak with if you're calling in an order! For this year's potluck at work, I called because I heard they did Deep Fried Turkeys. They did! So we all chipped in for a 12 lb bird. I called a few weeks prior and on the day I went and picked it up. It was a great price and they had it carved for me (per my request). It came with a big container of gravy as well. So delicious. They have a great menu and you can tell they have a loyal customer base from the lines that form around lunch time. I actually frequent here a lot. However, after today I will not be returning. Not for a replacement nor any other meal. For the most part the food has been okay, but beware if your order is messed up. My burger was completely raw (i requested it as medium done). I called calm and asked what can be done. The staff was wonderful and honestly very sweet, but the manager (I don't even know her name), is extremely rude and condescending. She cuts you off, wants to create a debate where there is none, and quite frankly her tone is just rude. I did not ask for my money back, only a replacement of my order yet she snapped at me. Yet I got "honey whatever if you want a refund bring it back". Again, I was calling to ask for a replacement for this RAW burger. I responded "it's 100 degrees outside, I'm not calling for a refund I'm calling to see if a note can be left for a replacement at a later date". Again I got "honey it's summer, obviously it's going to be hot". Not only did she raise her voice for no reason, she's just unprofessional. I also said to her "maybe there is a mix in communication, because not once did I yell or get rude or smart with you or your associates. Why is there a back and forth when I'm simply making a complaint". Now if I stooped to her level of emotional intelligence, I would have been wrong. Came to expressway put beef for the first time. Ordered a medium well sandwich, fries and bottled water. Drove home to eat. Bit into the sandwich to find large splinter like pieces of wood material inside of my sandwich. I could not tell whether it was actually wood or burnt ends, but whatever it was it was inedible. Besides the great turkey dinner, we got at Thanksgiving, the delicious pit beef, open face beef sandwich, and the most delicious honey bar-b-cue wings I've ever had, we recently tried their chicken nuggets. My spouse rarely eats them and when she does, it's only from one place. Then she tried them from here and loves them. In fact, my 2-year-old great nephew gobbles them down and you've never met a more picky eater. On top of all this, they have delicious shakes and sodas. Staff was accommodating and had the food out in less than 10 minutes (they had estimated it would take 15-20, so I was happy with having it earlier!). Menu items were all surprisingly hearty, affordable, and quick options for those on the go. Parking lot was easy to navigate and there was a nice outdoor seating area.
