This location is no exception, although the facilities and equipment have definitely seen better days. The staff seem to be trying their best to inject some life into the location. There is still a lot to appreciate here: a jacuzzi, dry sauna, women's steam room, pool, basketball court, and racquetball courts. Their current condition, however, is a different story. The group exercise classes are solid, with options for nearly every fitness level and type of workout. Most of the Group X classes at this location use MOSSA programming. They are challenging enough to provide a good workout, but still approachable and beginner-friendly. At the same time, a facility offering this range of amenities is probably costly to operate and maintain. This location, in particular, is overdue for meaningful investment and modernization. The membership has increasingly shifted toward an older demographic, perhaps because of the emphasis on wellness and recovery. Families appear to come mainly for the pool, while younger members gravitate toward the basketball court. The racquetball courts have seen better days and have now been converted into multifunctional spaces, which is a bit sad. Evening group classes that once drew large crowds now rarely exceed five participants, with one or two exceptions. The morning classes are killing it, in contrast. The range of fitness equipment is comprehensive. There is a machine for almost every type of functional training or exercise, but much of it is very dated. It is almost a chicken-and-egg question. Would renovating and investing in the facility attract a new group of members who could help sustain the business, or does the gym first need to attract those members to afford the renovation? That seems to be where this location stands at the moment. For me, things are still good enough that I continue to go, but they could certainly be better.

When the pandemic hit I kept my membership going for at least six months to support local business…read more When I decided I wanted to end my membership I was told I could either send a written request or come down to the gym in person, so I chose to come in person. After canceling I was then charged the following month, and when I inquired into why had this happened, I was told that was their policy. Once this pandemic is over, and things are a bit more back to normal I will not be returning. I plan to signup at a gym that doesn't charge an additional month to customers who have terminated their month to month agreement in writing.

It has…read morethings like squat racks, belt squat, and some hammer strength equipment that is hard to come by in commerical gyms. They also have a good number of cable machines. That's about where the good ends. It has taken a dive since the ownership change, but even before that it wasn't great. The place is filthy and dilapidated. The bathrooms are rarely clean or functional. One urinal is always out of commission and the other leaks. Toilets are never cleaned (there's been an orange Cheeto sitting next to the toilet for going on 12 months now). The equipment is generally okay, but some of it is in rough shape. Handles are missing or bars to the leg extension are extremely bent. A good portion of the cardio equipment is out of order. There's always a machine broken. They refused to fix a clip on the belt squat machine (and are still using a sub optimal clip today). Recently they've had several pieces of equipment out of commission for a while. On top of that, there's other safety issues that should be addressed; 1. The plate loaded preacher curl needs to be tightened. It's very loose and could cause injury 2. Most of the machines are not tacked to the floor. Meaning they'll move around on you if you start moving some heavier weights 3. Both leg extensions need to be fixed. The oldest one is so loose that it wobbles during the movement, causing horrible knee torque. The other is so bent that it also will cause knee torque. 4. Some of the cables and carabineers need to be fixed. The cables are fraying and the carabineers don't clip down, which is a huge injury risk. 5. The lack of paper towels in the bathrooms and floor means that people aren't washing their hands (have seen it every day I go, six days a week, for as long as I have gone) or wiping down equipment. This is a recipe for ring worm, and trust me, it will happen. 6. They need to update or get additional equipment. There's not enough to go around. Instead of catering to this boxing thing, investing in the fitness aspect would probably be advisable, since your main clientele and business is the fitness component. The conversion of the turf area into a boxing ring seems like a big miss. A lot of work and equipment went into a space that isn't utilized. It would have been better spent upgrading or fixing the current equipment (or making sure there paper towels to wipe machines down). Overall, this gym has become a miss for me. I only continue because of the people and lack of options, but it isn't ever a first choice for me anymore. Disappointing.

Did you ever find a place- any place- that you loved so much, you wanted to tell everyone you knew…read moreabout it, but really wanted to keep it all to yourself, both at once? That's how I feel about What Is Movement. I keep putting off writing this. Because I want to keep it my secret place. But... Really, everyone should check this place out. What Is Movement is a gym/studio owned by Jayme and Jamie, a husband and wife team, who have created this amazing, supportive community. "Boy Jamie" (yes, that's how they refer to each other!) teaches kettle bell, ViPR (google it, seriously, it's so cool), and metabolic resistance training classes, in addition to personal training. "Girl Jayme" teaches yoga, and does private yoga and body work sessions, as well as running a Monday night "stitch and bitch" group. And there are more members of the team: Jessie teaches Forrest yoga on Thursday nights; Gianna teaches yoga three times a week; and they have just added a chiropractor and massage therapist to their growing group of health gurus. I found What Is Movement through Jessie; Jessie is an amazing Forrest yoga teacher. I would drive nearly anywhere for one of her classes. So, I started making my way to Warwick once a week for her class. I found myself enchanted by the atmosphere at What Is Movement, and asked Jessie about the other classes. The ViPR classes especially intrigued me, but I had a pretty significant hand injury, and wasn't sure it would be something I could do. Jessie suggested I talk to Jayme before trying out a class. Jayme knows his... Stuff. Since I first talked to him, I've tried all of his classes, and have been consistently impressed with his ability as an instructor in every modality. He watches each student, remembers injuries and provides modifications, and plans for each person to be successful in every single class. I leave his classes sweaty and sore, but stronger and more confident each time. Jayme's enthusiasm is contagious! And you'll get to know how intense the class will be by what music is blasting when you walk in (Metallica? It's gonna be as upper intense class). Jamie is also a skilled instructor, who uses her knowledge of yoga and anatomy to make each class beneficial for each student. Her bodywork sessions leave you feeling more free, able to breathe deeper. She brings a calm, healing warmth to both her classes and individual sessions. So that's my secret. A wonderful place, supportive community, run by knowledgable and caring people. You really should try it out.
