Overall, iIt's an okay storage facility. I've been keeping my things here for about two years, but they have raised the prices about three times. I understand I started with a special online deal, but now I'm paying almost double my sign-up price. I sort of feel trapped until I finally get settled into a new place and can move my things out. My rate went from $115 to $288 within a year. This company is shady AF. Stay away. They give no notice. I called and asked what's up, they said that there's a clause buried in the contract somewhere. That's how they treat customers. Update: The person that left the comment encouraging me to call - doesn't work at the location I use. I already spoke to the location, they are the ones that told me about their little clause that they can increase the price whenever they want without notice and told me get a smaller unit if I didn't like the price. read more

Stay away at all cost. Paid for three months online for a 5x4 unit ...the unit I was given is barely 4x4. I was already half way moved in when I noticed so I jammed all my stuff in. Three months later I find my unit is COVERED in rat piss and sh!t. Covered. Spent two days cleaning it out only to come home that night to a notice that they had raised my rate from $89 to $155 after only three months. Today i called inquiring about why I was double charged, the manager kept speaking over me and then lost her temper when I tried to mention that my bank was reporting I was double charged even if her system says I was not. On top of the arbitrary rent raises, please just stay away from this place. I'm giving these folks 4 stars for truly outstanding customer service. I want to stress that the folks working here were incredibly helpful. If you decide to rent a storage unit, however, MAKE SURE TO BOOK ONLINE AHEAD OF TIME otherwise you'll be paying through the nose. Trust me. Secondly, their elevator is GLACIALLY slow. You will sincerely spend a solid minute getting up to the fourth floor. This is not an exaggeration. But I'd like to again stress that everyone working there was awesome and that elevator speeds are (probably) outside of their control. read more

The short version -- SNOW DAY for us! We have such little respect for our customers once we have their money, we won't be bothered to put on a coat, don our snow boots, and take the UNDERGROUND TRAIN to work. We also won't won't put any, and i do mean any, effort into notifying our customers we are not there, to the extent that if they call and ask, we'll tell them we are are here!! To our customers looking to pick things up, "sorry, you can't have ur things its cold and wet," and to our customers who might need to drop things off maybe due to a move from an apartment, "just reschedule your move around your storage company -- tell your landlord the staff at EXTRA SPACE went sledding in the park and ask your landlord and truck rental company for a few more days, I'm sure they oblige at no cost to you, it is not like it is the last day of the month, that's Monday, maybe we'll be back then! Furthermore, not only do we not care a bout our obligations to you by showing up to work, going are also going to put ZERO effort into communicating that fact to our customers. We can't even be bothered to scribbled "closed due to snow" on a post-it to the door let alone fire up MS Word, type it out and hit print, so there will be nothing on the door (in fact we'll even leave the big sign up that says "YES WE ARE OPEN"), nothing on the website to indicate we are closed and as a company we'll be SOOO dysfunctional that EVEN IF THEY CALL in TWICE before coming we'll tell them we are open and to "come right down and don't forget to haul ur heavy stuff to Brooklyn in the crappy weather, cuz we (won't) be here, you (can't) get it in, and we'll leave you literally in freezing cold with your stuff. Forget the fact that we are holding YOUR THINGS, that you (over) PAY US us to be able to ACESS. Forget the fact that many, many other stores nearby are open who have no obligation to be open to their customers -- restaurants, bodegas, clothing stores, dollar stores basically everything. Those guys are trying to earn their customers respect and business, we already have your money and cc numbers, so while your stuff is here you can count on us to poop on you, dear customer, while the mice in our facility are pooping all over your things (pics below and mentioned on other posts). Personally, I'm hard pressed to think of another type of company besides basic infrastructure such as utilities and banking and those fulfilling basic human needs such as pharmacies and grocery stores that should put forth the effort not matter what to make sure their customers are ok. To management and whoever's job it is to apologize and give me a 888 number to call -- no thanks, and don't call again after reading this review. I'd rather burn my stuff than give your company another penny. And to those employees, if I were you I'd use the hot job market to run from this company as fast as i am about to. Background: I called twice before coming in Saturday and some agent assured me "yes **we** are here in the snow til 7:00PM despite the weather." When i later called back after trying to get it in the same guy, who clearly is at some call center pretending to be on onsite, he continued to assure me they were open until, i guess he bothered to read the text somewhere on his screen that said "possibly closed Sat and Sunday." Update: Closed Sunday's too, it is Sunny as hell, so clearly management is looking to save a few hundred dollars by closing. Customers and their needs be dammed. RUN!!! THIS PLACE IS A FUCKING SCAM!!! They will get you in at one rate and within 3 months RAISE YOUR RATE FOR NO REASON! claiming its "market rate". I signed up for $119 a month and on the fourth month they raised my rate to $155. That's more of an increase i've had than on my actual apartment rent. DO NOT GO HERE. Let me tell you about Extra Space Storage: first off, if you want the extra space expect to pay a real premium. They'll jangle you over every penny. Then there's the fact that this is not so much a "storage space" but rather a palace for rats to come and inhabit your belongings. DO PAY FOR INSURANCE. If you're foolish enough to rent here after reading this please, I urge you, no...I implore you: quadruped wrap everything you own in titanium steel. You will lose all your precious things. First I wanna give a rave review for Yesenia. She was the associate who helped close out my account recently at ESS. I cleaned out my storage locker, removed the lock and she did the rest on her system. There was an overlap of a day on my account but she was able to resolve this issue with no muss, no fuss. Very efficient, helpful and friendly too! Was able to have a smooth exit thanks to Yesenia! She's a good asset on that team. Now for the other stuff... FACILITY The facility I thought is secure. Never felt my belongings were vulnerable while locked up. That said, ESS had to start locking up the carts bc they would get stolen. You have to go to front desk to acquire a key. This process wasn't strict when I signed up, but it enforced in the last few months when visited. The code panel system works well too for entry. The lockers are also temp controlled which is very nice in the winter and summer months. My only complaint is they restrict access to the locker bays roughly 15 mins before closing, even with an entry code. The advertised closing is at 7:00pm, and I got there 6:45pm and the locker bays were already locked for the night. Entry code fails. I learned this the hard way. As a paying customer, this is bs because its still within the advertised operating hours. If you close at 6:30pm or 6:45pm, advertise that instead of 7:00pm. I had only few items and would have been completed in 5 mins before 7:00pm closing. PRICE I have a complaint that they require enrolling in an insurance policy, which they provide, to register as a tenant/user at ESS. This is $10 extra per month. My things are already insured, I don't need extra insurance, but it is required or find another storage facility. Non-negotiable. I understand the liability angle, but its a sham to shave an extra few bucks off everyone IMO if my stuff is insured. Or no waiver to "not sue ESS if my stuff was ever vandalized or stolen". 60% extra compared to the promo price! I had a promo rate on an "elevated unit" which required a moving staircase like you find at home depot to ascend and lift things into the elevated locker. This elevated unit was not advertised in the promo price ad. Being it was a promo price, I couldn't complain with this slight inconvenience because it was a cheap deal. "You get what you pay for", as they say. Also, I'm an able, middle aged male, so someone less able may have an issue climbing and lugging heavy items/boxes up a movable staircase. If thats you, you might have to pay more to avoid this awkward setup. That all said with the extra insurance price, unadvertised, less-than-ideal elevated locker, I would revisit this place because it was convenient for distance and my wallet. This place is not perfect, but the staff are helpful and the facilities are sufficient. That is worth the money. read more

This was my first time using a storage facility and I was a little nervous about it. Okay, more than a little nervous. Just ask Eric, the manager, who had several long phone calls with me as I asked a gazillion questions. (Sorry, Eric.) What a patient person he is. Even I wanted to smack myself. The day I went in to sign the contract, Yesenia greeted us. Eric wasn't available so she introduced us to the other people working at the facility, offered us bottled water, took us on a tour, and handled the contract for us. What great energy she has. Moving is a stressful time, and she made me feel I was in good hands. True to her word, she contacted me the next day to make an agreed-upon adjustment to our service. I also wanted to mention that this facility in Ridgewood, NY is immaculately clean. Today, when we moved our stuff in, we were assisted by yet another friendly person. They sure know how to hire people with wonderful customer service skills. Thank you, all, for making this stressful time as painless as possible. I really do appreciate it. read more

Extra Space Storage saved me. I originally had a reservation with another storage company in Canarsie that offered a free 2hr truck driver. Only thing is the truck never showed up and no one was answering the phones. I luckily found Extra Space Storage and called them immediately to reserve a unit. 30min later I was at their Ridgewood location signing the lease and moving my things in. The storage is a lot closer to my apartment and ended up being slightly cheaper than the other company. The workers are nice and the building is very clean and new. read more

Great customer service when you're signing up for a locker, so that's why you see so many five star reviews because once you get a locker with them they immediately want a review. Let me know how good that customer service is when you have to ask a simple question. I've been on this fictitious waiting list for their parking lot for months as well and have gotten the run around that they're full and that they'll let me know, but it seems like every time i drive by there i see more and more box trucks parked in their lot. The times I've been there early they've opened late. There needs to be more realistic reviews on here or updated reviews on how their customer service is when you've been renting with them for a while. read more
