Just completed the CHL class on 1/2/12 - and I must admit it was great! I was alittle concerned based upon the great price and since I have taken the full CHL class twice before (one free at Kaufman Sheriffs office and one paid at a gun shop), I sorta knew what to expect. The material was well presented, instructor (Craig) was knowledgeable and never boring and encouraged class participation. The range was perfect for what we required (it was a outdoor range but very well maintained) and it was close to class location and allowed a nice break (and side trip to Sonic). Both Craig and Mike and the boys (sorry - didn't get their names) - quickly set up the targets - ran the tests professionally - and allowed several different levels of shooters the time they needed while not dragging down the others. As previously posted - the training area in the local restaurant/convenience store allowed attendees the ability to get supplies/drinks/BBQ, etc as needed. Restrooms were very nice and close and the area was very well maintained. Only con is the noise from the chopping of the BBQ but the owners are addressing that shortly. Just off I-30 east of Rockwall was very convenient. CHL class material is very dry but instructor livened it up with videos and scenarios to help demonstrate the material. Complete class and materials provided (except Fingerprinting but that is the states fault - no one does that now) for a single price. I will be taking my wife out to the range for some private lessons and then she will be getting her CHL also - not something I would consider without seeing what Craig/Mike can/has done. I would highly recommend them and you can not beat the price. As with all open classes - the participants determine their own comments and I saw nothing that would make me believe the classes had any political "leaning" - one way or the other. Like all classes - the purpose of using a weapon is to STOP the attacker. I had been planning on taking a CHL class for sometime and when I saw the Groupon for Extreme Defensive in Royce, City, I figured why not. I had checked out the website and all looked pretty good. Coming from Dallas, it was about a 25 minute drive to the classroom which is held in a small building next to a restaurant. For what it was, it was a perfect setup - even getting full restaurant service from the waitresses next door. This weekend, the class seemed fuller than they expected and the weather was really cold, wet, and windy for the shooting qualification at the nearby outdoor range but all went smoothly. The instructor, Craig, was very personable and taught a great informative class. I came out with exactly the experience I had expected and wanted. The previous comments about the class being "right leaning" or that you need to have a thick skin if you are "offended easily" could not have been farther from the truth. The students came from all over the DFW metroplex and the class was taught with the utmost professionalism. The only bummer was the weather for the outdoor range for most of the students. I was lucky enough to be in the only group that got to shoot that day and others needed to come back because of the weather, but the instructors where extremely accommodating and apologetic. But hey, it is an outdoor range and this is Texas winter. Extreme Defensive is new, small family owned business and they are still working out the kinks but it looks like they have a good vision and a good group for going forward. There are plenty of other places to take a CHL class in the DFW metoroplex, but this was a great experience and I feel comfortable with what I was taught and the format of the class. read more

I got my CHL from Extreme Defensive in 2009 and I quickly found out how professional this class was run. I had several questions about the CHL process and being an Air Force Veteran, I wanted to know how that would affect me. Extreme Defensive answered my email questions quickly and I was in a class within two weeks. I found the class to be informative and well taught. When it came time to qualify, we shot in two groups and the whole operation was professional, organized and very safe. The instructor knew his stuff and was very realistic when it came to answering questions about CHL and the responsibility we all carry being licensed. I have since taken two other courses at Extreme Defensive and find that everyone involved is friendly and very knowledgeable. I use to shoot at another gun range in the area and found that the wait times were excessive, the people rude and the whole environment negative. I find that I am welcomed with a smile at Extreme Defensive, people honestly care about your safety (not just trying to be drill instructors) and they want feedback on how they can make things better. I took the class in Feb of 2011. Having previously had my CHL several years ago before letting it lapse, i have another companies class to compare this class too and this class is very good. The cost was also considerably cheaper than the last place i took the class and was the biggest reason i went to Extreme Defensive. The material you will learn is will be the same no matter where you go to take your CHL class since it is a state issued curriculum. As far as the instructors, Mike taught my class and he was very good and very knowledgeable with the material. As stated above, the range is just a range but from the pics on their facebook page, they have made alot of updates to it since i took the class and it looks alot better. If you are interested in obtaining your CHL, i would very much recommend Extreme Defensive. They are who i will be taking my renewal class from when it comes up in a few years. read more

I took their CHL course in July of 2011 and it was fantastic. The instructors were well prepared and obviously were very familiar with the material. The material itself was presented in a thoughtful and engaging manner. They encouraged participation and overall the class went by surprisingly quick. The cost of the course was 25% cheaper than most other companies offering the same course in this area, additionally ED provided nearly everything else I needed to obtain my CHL (all forms and passport photos) at no extra charge. The range was decent, not great, but I don't really need anything fancy at a shooting range so I was more than satisfied. Just took the CHL class yesterday. I was very concerned at first since it's a ten hour class & thought it might be a little boring. But, I had nothing to fear. The class was great. I learned so much and really enjoyed it. Of course, shooting at the range was the best part! I highly recommend the class. It is not just hours of lecture; it's very interactive & helps you think through the impact of your choices. It really helped me to clarify why I want to carry & if I really should. I feel much more confident now, not just in my shooting, but in my ability to make wise choices and resolve conflicts. read more

I totally agree with Kevin and totally disagree with Jason's right leaning statement. Took the CHL class today. The restaurant/convenience store was clean and handy. The firing range is not fancy but it serves its purpose.. There were no political views. It was a big class and the instructor kept it on track to keep it flowing with the large number of us. Took the CHL class back in February, was very educational. I had a bad experience, my gun stopped working 6 shots into the shooting test, but someone let me use their gun and I finished the course perfectly. The instructors were great and the building the class was in was just fine, no convenient store attached to it. I will more then likely go join the range they have out there and probably start shooting in their league every Thursday. read more
