The office staff always greets me and is very pleasant. Eyes are very important to me and I have complete confidence in this doctor and the doctors she has referred me and my family over the years. My husband has a serious condition and was referred to an excellent specialist. My elderly mom also has a serious eye condition and was referred to excellent specialists. Sue has been helping me choose frames that are both attractive and comfortable. She accurately measures and fits the glasses. I love this office. I can't understand the negative reviews. Sometimes you get the attitude you give. No one has ever been rude to me. Only time I was referred to another doctor was when my family or I needed care this office could not provide.

I came across Family Eye Care from a simple search through the VSP site. Let me start by saying the whole appointment, including picking out and ordering new glasses took me less than 45 minutes from the moment I walked through the door. Being a first time patient, extra time was needed to go through the typical questionnaire. No dilation needed!!! This place has all the fancy new technology! I left seeing clearly, which in itself gives this place 5 stars in my opinion! Dr Greene was awesome. He was funny and made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. In fact the whole staff is great! I highly recommend this vision center!

Well, patient beware, you might find the billing practices of these folks to be devious. Let me explain. To start, I will comment on the good. Very modern facility, modern equipment and the medical staff are polite and friendly. If you are in need of Ophthalmology services, this is probably a good facility to work with but I couldn't verify since I was there for a simple eye test. However if your in need of a simple eye exam by a Optometrist and you're on a medicare program BEWARE, YOU MOST LIKELY WILL BE OVERCHARGE! To start, you will find the receptionist has an attitude. Not friendly, physicaly out of shape, no smiles, no room for discussion if you have a concern. It's her way or the highway. You ask to see a manager or some authority, you out of luck, it stops with her. There are not managers or directors for either of the facilities. It's the receptionist...period. So I need an eye test so I can get a new eyeglass prescription. My insurance listed this office as a approved provider and states a co-pay ($15.00 in my case). However this is an Ophthalmology facility and eventhough I am seeing an Optometrist for a standard eye text, they code this as a "Specialist" visit. I note that I'm not seeing a specialist (Ophthalmologist) but a Optometrists. Doesn't matter. She tells me I can go elseware if I don't like it. It's years end, I need to use the benefit ASAP or lose it so I decide to go through with the exam, pay the specialist co-pay ($45.00 in my case) and have my insurance get them to correct to overcharge. Now while I'm waiting for insurance to follow up, I then get an invoice from these guys stating I owe an additional $35.00. Why, because unlike other optometrist offices, these guys pull out components of the exam and bill them as separate services. So my standard eye exam from this office became an higher fee exam ($45.00) plus a $35.00 charge for "a Refraction for the routine exam". So what was described in my insurance plan as a $15.00 co-pay has become an $80.00 expense. I've had four other eye exams provided under medicare, all of them fully inclusive of the services and requiring a $15.00 co-pay. I changed my insurance company this year and my past eye doctor was not in network. No problem, I simply go with who the new office the insurance allows. In this case, BAD DECISION! Based on my experience I am of the opinion these folks are knowingly abusing the system with their billing practices. I suspect most folks don't want to deal with fighting this so they accept the abuse and pay the additional fees. So let me do you a favor...be warned. IF YOU PLAN TO DEAL WITH THESE FOLKS, DON'T RELY ON WHAT YOU PLAN STATES YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR, YOU BEST GET VERIFICATION OF WHAT THEY WILL BILL YOU BEFORE YOU MAKE AN APPOINTMENT.

She took her time and explained things to me thoroughly. She was very good at making sure I was comfortable during the eye testing and she also has a great sense of humor lol. These are all some of the things I look for personally, that make me want to come back to the same medical professionals. This man has no bedside manner, is gruff, doesn't explain anything to you, and has zero compassion. When he diagnosed me with severe cataracts 9 months ago, because I'm relatively young, I was shocked and became emotional, mostly due to the fear we naturally have when someone tells you that you need surgery on your eyes. And THAT infuriated him, which made it worse for me. Guess he forgot about the Hippocratic Oath. No doctor should behave like Dr. Shafik. Find another doctor like I did at the Eye Care Group (Dr. Kostina is wonderful) in Waterbury or wherever you feel comfortable. It makes a huge difference having a doctor who actually cares not only about your eyes, but about you as a person. And your fears about cataract surgery? It wasn't that bad with the right doctor!

I suspect that the majority of patients they see are not into the social thing so any poor experiences would most likely not be posted. Anyway here is my experience: 1. Professional Staff? Other than the doctor herself and a lab tech, my interaction was with the elaborately decked out adolescent staff members, pasted with makeup and extremely long flashy fingernails (I suspect someone's daughters). I felt I had entered the lobby of "Teen Magazine" or something like that. Definitely did not make me feel I was dealing with professional offices (or maybe I'm from the wrong generation. I don't know). 2. Get what you pay for? They did not provide the full service they are billing insurance for. I told the Dr. I had seen a retinal specialist in the past. Therefore did not give a full test for glaucoma or diabetic issues (I am diabetic), she said "I'll leave it to them do this". Didn't bother to ask if I was still seeing them and it didn't occur to me to question her at the time (had a senior moment). Once home I called the office to state my disappointment, wanted to have the full service due to me. Manager said she'd look into it. Almost a month now, no one has called me back. 3. Reasonable Delivery Date - Supposably about 14 day delivery for new glasses however mine took over 3 weeks to receive. No one called to alert me to the delay. So I called, was told they had to be remade due to breakage. OK, but still 3 weeks? The basic response was it was because of my health care provider stating THEY required them to use a lab that Durham Eye Care does not use. Well, nice if they would have told me this before I order my expensive glasses from them. At that price I would have ordered from another supplier had I know this. I needed something quick. 4. Did not give me a copy of my prescription. I emailed them stating I needed a copy and to please forward it to me. Going on 4 days not...crickets....no one calls back. 5. Voicemail - You get voice mail a lot with them. Can't understand why, they seem to be staffed well enough (including the kids). I don't bother leaving messages, too frustrating. Personal/General Observation - The medical industry has evolved in to point where patient care and service is secondary to healthcare management. I've experienced this with many family members in a number of health related offices. Here, this office has been non responsive AFTER the service. Call the health provider to inquire and report an issue, you struggling to communicate with service representative in the Philippines, Mexico, Nicaragua, etc. By its own nature a deterrent for the patient to pursue or petition a corrective action. Take the above four comments for what it is worth.
