Please stay away from Dr. She . She has terrible bed side manner and I did take her her advice with my glaucoma and she made my eyesight worst with the new eye drops she prescribed. I made another appointment with here about my concern then she keep pushing laser surgery on me know how uncomfortable I felt. I am switching Dr. ASAP . I miss Dr. Husted may he rest.in peace. I made my appointment over 3 months ago. They kept reminding me by phone and texts ahead of time to confirm, including a message in the morning for my 2:45 appointment. When I got there, I was told the doctor is practicing in downtown Monterey and I can go there. The front office could have called me of the change but said they did not have me on their schedule which is why they didn't call me. I decided to take my business elsewhere. I have been to both offices and they are both great. I called Dr. Penrose a month ago told him I was in pain and he saw me the same day. I then called back after hours in pain with my eye and he came into the office. You don't find that anymore someone who really cares like he does. Our previous ophthalmologist retired so my wife and I went to Dr. Penrose who was referred to us by a friend. I had cataract surgery and my wife needed contact lenses. We received excellent care from Dr. Penrose and his staff. Dr. Penrose answered my questions about the surgery and explained what I could expect. Follow-up care was excellent as well. Finding a doctor, ANY Doctor, since I moved here to the Monterey area has been a challenge. I found Eye MD through a coworker. Turns out they're fantastic . I say this because I ended up having the eye surgery I've been putting off, well my whole life, by Dr. Philip Penrose. And I've had extremely good care since then. The staff is always is always nice. Eye MD Monterey is a solid spot for any type of corrective vision, whether you are into frames/lens or contacts. They are taking all the precautions to keep you safe: sanitization, face masks, temperature check, etc. Insurance options are plenty, but for sure they take Aetna which should cover your eye exam. But you will have to pay extra if you are getting an eye exam for premium contacts (about $67). Dr. Tran was very professional, a good communicator, and definitely cares about her patients. She helped me get better corrective vision for my contacts. I can see at night now! (Not that I couldn't before, things are just clearer). The nurse staff who do the preliminary question and check are nice as well. Clean facilities. They will give you contact lens samples to take home. As for contact lens pricing, ask them about how much insurance will cover if you buy a year supply, and what rebates are offered. You might just land a killer deal. read more

The optometrist was terrible. He didn't listen. Seems like he just wanted to do exam and move on.He rattled off some science that wasn't even well validated. I walked out without being able to explain and he address all of my issues. Get what you pay for. The glasses retail section was a joke. Costco is better. There were hardly any options. The office needs a makeover. It looks tired. The optometrist didn't even wash or hand gel clean his hands. They can do better. read more

I saw Doc Penrose for an annual examination. From making the appointment, meeting reception, and going through the examination, it was a great experience. The office was clean and neat, reception staff was polite, friendly and professional. "Nurse" Brenda did a great job with the preliminary examination.. what a super young lady! And finally, Doc Penrose is a consumate professional. He was friendly, knowledgeable, answered my every question and thoroughly addressed each concern. The reason I am rating this place with ONE star it's because of the billing issue that they are having me to go through. I have Tricare West and VSP insurance. I went to Eye MD Monterey at Ryan Ranch for routine check up so I can update my glasses prescriptions. The front desk, the doctor, and the technician who helped me ordering my glasses were all so nice and helpful! On the day of the exam, the doctor noticed my eyes were a little red, I told her I have seasonal allergy and sometimes my eyes get itchy, red, and watery when its bad. She put a note on my paper. I paid $15 at checkout since they said they were going to use my VSP, even though Tricare covers one routine eye exam yearly. This is how the nightmare started - I received an outstanding bill stating that I owe and I noticed the office billed tricare. First, I called the billing office at Eye MD and I believe the person who I talked to on the phone was Lily. She told me it was billed under "medical condition" and she asked me if I had referral from my PCM, I told her I went in for routine check up and I was told the office is going to bill my VSP. Then she told me that VSP won't cover it since I have a medical condition and she told me to call tricare or call my PCM to get a referral then she can resubmit to Tricare. I told the billing lady at Eye MD, she needs to recode it and resubmit. She refused it because she kept on telling me that I received a diagnosis. She told me there is NOTHING she can do to change it! I even told Lily, the billing person at Eye MD, that's NOT right that they are UPCODING, which it's fraud!! I called tricare and explained the whole thing, the representative called and spoke to Lily, the Rep told me that Lily was doing the exact thing and kept on telling her I was diagnosed with " conjunctivitis due to seasonal allergies" therefore, it needs to be billed as "medical condition" the rep was on the phone with her for almost an hour and explaining everything. PLEASE EDUCATE YOUR STAFF and bill the insurance correctly! If I had known the amount time and trouble that I have to go through with the billing issue, I would've stayed away from this place! read more

I recently took my brother in law in for an exam with Dr. Tran. The man is 79 and not the easiest to work with. Dr. Tran was very understanding and had the patience to help when he was not responding to her requests. We picked up his glasses and they fit well and he was very happy with the pesscription. Although my experience with the corrective cataracts recommended by the doctor and the expectations that they said I should expect where not accurate, and the dreadful accounting system they had caused problems, the doctor himself did a very good job of the surgery. I would recommend him as a doctor, just get many facts and reviews about the cataracts before you make a decision. I lost my near vision with the corrective lens, which I would not have agreed to. read more

We woke up early and drove to Monterey along beautiful HWY 68 and arrived at Ryan Ranch Medical facility for my mom's challenging cataract eye surgery. The staff was prompt and attentive. My mom was called in and prepped for surgery. Dr. Penrose came by to ask a few questions and calmly answered ours. The surgery went well and we were greatly relieved. The following day she had a follow-up visit at Dr. Penrose's office at Ryan Ranch. We were pleasantly received, the staff was friendly and efficient, Dr Penrose patiently evaluated and answered my Mom's questions, her eye was healing fine. Thank you Doctor Penrose. read more

My overall experience with this office and Dr Penrose was exceptionally good. My story goes back to April this year when I woke up one morning to find that the sight in my left eye had pretty-much failed overnight. After multiple visits to my local optometrist and consultations with a couple of specialists, the ONLY doctor who was able to accurately dignose the problem was Dr Penrose. I found I had a particularly aggressive kind of cataract and surgery would correct the problem. I am no stranger to going "under the knife" but I can't even begin to describe how terrifying the prospect of eye surgery was, but Dr Penrose assured my that this was a very straightforward procedure with a very high success rate. He has a very calming voice and bedside manner. Definately a must-have for an eye surgeon! A date was set, and two weeks later I found myself on a gurney at the Ryan Ranch surgery center in a typically un-flattering hospital gown. Ten minutes later I was in possesion of a spanking-new crystal-clear lens in my left eyeball and very thorough instructions on how to look after myself for the coming weeks. All completely pain- free and drama-free. Three months on, I'm more thrilled than ever. My eyesight is 20/20 (albeit corrected) and continues to improve. My job requires perfect eyesight and my boss is as happy as I am. He was getting a little frustrated with my lack of depth-perception before the surgery! I find that my right eye will need the same procedure in the coming couple of years , and I will have absolutely no hesitation heading back to this office. Dr Penrose is an outstanding eye surgeon in every respect. He is kind, caring, sympathetic to the particular needs of each patient, and thoroughly professional. He performed cataract surgery on me Jun 10th 2015. at my follow up appointment the next day, I had 20/20 vision with the new lens he implanted on the operative eye. His office staff is courteous and efficient. Dr Penrose is readily accessible to answer patient questions and concerns and keeps the overall welfare of his patients foremost in his mind. State of the art technology is available in his office and in the operating room. I'd drive a hundred miles to consult with Dr Penrose for any eye problem. read more

I went to Dr. Penrose last May to have a small growth removed on my left eyelid. I was given an exam by a tech and then Dr. Penrose came in and said I needed cataract surgery and that I wouldn't pass an eye exam for a driver's license with my vision. He told me about his laser surgery and I was ushered out to the front desk and given the paperwork to sign up for the surgery and told that my insurance wouldn't pay for it so it would all be out of pocket. I was totally taken by surprise with this sudden diagnosis so I told them I was going to wait and consider what to do. I then talked to a friend who's an optometrist and he recommended getting a second opinion which I did from another well respected ophthalmologist in Monterey. His diagnosis was the opposite of Dr. Penrose's. He said I did not need cataract surgery and when I did he would not recommend laser surgery. He said my corrected vision was fine for passing a driver's test. In addition to this, I visited another friend who is an optometrist and based upon his exam, he confirmed that I did not need cataract surgery! I'm posting this so other patients of Dr. Penrose will ask questions and get a second opinion before they sign up for his very expensive and possibly unnecessary laser surgery. read more

Dr. Penrose performed cataract surgery on me this month and I have only praise for him and his staff. He is not only very professional, but also extremely kind, compassionate, and caring. I should have had the surgery done two years ago but had anxiety about it so put it off. Dealing with staff is very frustrating at all levels. And even though Dr. Sablad, the new doctor in the Cass street office is very good at fitting contact lenses, she will not go beyond her basic duties: I have been asking for a simple note describing my symptoms as to request a better screen in my office and she has resisted in multiple occasions with no explanations. If you can find a another practice covered by your insurance do yourself a favor and avoid this one. read more

I had an appt with Dr. Penrose on Monday, Dec 12th to check my eyes. I am having problems driving at night and seeing what looks like hundreds of spotlights instead of headlights, traffic lights, etc. I also have a growth on my eyelid. I was greeted warmly and had a pre-exam from a nurse. She was great, thorough and seemed knowledgeable. I then met with Dr. Penrose briefly. He was warm. He said my vision was good, but I would need to removed growth from eyelid before it gets larger. He also said that eye drops might help my night vision problem thinking it might be from dry eyes. He recommended some eye drops, but had no samples. He seemed busy and escorted me out to the out going receptionist at a different desk. He did not schedule me for the growth removal. I inquired about the samples and she said they were out, but she would get them at the Ryan Ranch office and have them for me on Friday the 16th. She said she would have them for me at her desk. I came back on Friday afternoon with my little girl and both receptionists were at their desks eating lunch. I inquired about the sample drops. The front desk woman told me they were at lunch and continued eating. I said I could see that. I said they drops should be there with my name. They knew nothing about it and continued eating! I asked if I could leave my name and number so that the desk #2 receptionist could call me when she got the sample. I left my name and phone number. I never received a call back. Maybe they should lock the door if they are not going to service their customers during lunch. Or, maybe just one receptionist should be eating lunch at a time so the other could help customers. It was unprofessional. Dr. Penrose seems like a good doctor, but I will not be going back. read more

I went to go to Dr. Philip Penrose based on the "Yelp" comments given. Whilst I am happy to hear that the majority of you had a nice experience, I found this man's beside manner very pleasant, but his skills as a Doctor lacking. He placed a mis-diagonsis on my chart that was a blanant incorrect statement as to my medical condition - which went into my medical records. When I tried to call him to discuss this, he does not return phone calls. When I tried to call him on an emerergency basis the following day because there was a conflict with the prescription he wrote, I waited over two hours for him to call me back - which never happened. He also charged the full amount of the office visit, knowing that there were "allowed amounts" by by insurance company. I called his office to discuss my concerns and shared with him that I would report him to the AMA - and he never returned the call.....thus I felt that writing to share his actions with the Public was more productive, so that people like yourselves would be aware. read more
