I am so delighted to find Noe Valley's Eye Q Optometry with Dr Tom and Staff! Unlike my old optometry office, which was literally Grand Central Station, Eye Q goes to great efforts to make the visit peaceful and Covid-safe. Only one patient is present in the office at a time. Dr Tom takes her time with you, goes over any questions and delivers a very thorough exam. Everyone is masked, the glasses are sanitized after you try them on. I've been going to Dr. Tom for years and just had my first COVID visit. I was beyond impressed at how much time and effort they have put into making the visit safe for patients and for themselves. This includes getting a no-touch temperature scan and having all the glasses you touch sanitized afterwards. They are wearing masks and face shields to keep everyone safe. Every staff person here is adorable and amiable. Dr. Tom is all-business, efficient and all her tools are high-tech. She's a nice change from my previous old-school optometrist. And I love Carmen! She and I kept chatting away before I realized I *still* hadn't made a choice on my frames. The selection here is great and sophisticated, and ranging in price from reasonable ($120) to extremely high end ($400+). Lots of designs by LaFont that are really gorgeous but the pricetag after what insurance covers can break your heart. You've been warned: this is the very antithesis of LensCrafters. After reading several different yelp reviews and noticing that most people are rating the selection of glasses instead of the skill of the optometrist, I went with Dr. Tom. The reviews are right: she's a dream optometrist. First, she's warm, funny, informative and thorough. Her state-of-the-art equipment makes the exam fast and accurate. And she was extremely patient as I settled in to really see the difference between "number 1" and "number 2." Second -- and this is a big one if you just want new lenses for your current frames -- she doesn't send the frames out to some random place to get the lenses put in (meaning you'd be without glasses for a week) like other places do. She orders the lenses, then you come back, she puts them in your frames, and you're only visionless for a few hours. Third, the frames selection is fantastic. I was keeping my frames, but I checked the frames out anyway, and they're as stylish as the window displays Eye Q is known for. I've had crap vision all my life, so I've been to many, many optometrists, and Dr. Tom is the best I've ever been to. Six stars. read more

Eye Q and Dr. Tom are great! Dr. Tom is thorough but quick. She doesn't use that machine the blows a puff of air in your eye - she has a different kind of machine that won't leave your eyes watering and your nerves on edge. Her staff is very pleasant and the shop itself is cute. They offer a great selection of frames, some of which are very unique and stylish compared to what you'd find in other chain/national optometry offices. Additionally, many of the frames carried in the shop have the ability to have nose pieces added, which for this Asian is always a requirement for plastic frames. It's nice to not have to be stuck with only a metal frame selection. Eye Q is never going to compete on price to places like Warby Parker. That said, you're paying for service, for a much larger selection of frame styles and supporting the local economy and an independent, woman-owned business. read more

I'm not a doctor loving kind of person, but I really do not mind going to see Dr. Tom. She is one of the best doctors--eye or otherwise--that I've ever visited. It seems as if others are catching on to her as well, as it's getting more and more difficult to schedule an appt these days. What makes Dr. Tom different? She really takes the time to tailor the exam to what you need, your concerns, and your wants. I'm practically blind, so this is invaluable to someone like me. It is hands-down the most thorough and accurate contact lens fitting I've ever had. Dr. Tom goes the extra mile to order various different contacts just to see if one could be slightly more comfortable than the other. For years I've found contacts just too annoying to be worthwhile, but after visiting Dr. Tom, I've finally found a pair that I can wear for long periods without any redness or irritation. I've also visited Dr. Tom with more serious eye ailments--like an eye infection. Under these circumstances, she immediately made time to see me and followed up with me well after my eye was healed. That level of treatment is hard to find. Most of all, she is just a very likeable and friendly person who treats you as if you are human, not a stupid idiot who has stupid questions. She always remembers me when I visit, is up-to-date with my records, and as an extra bonus, talks to me about things other than small talky how are you doing types of stuff. Bonus on top of bonus--the selection of glasses are great. They are pricey, for sure, but the staff will help you choose out frames that look good on your face (I've received so many compliments on my glasses that I actually prefer wearing them over contacts now). With this level of service and care, I would go to Dr Tom regardless of cost. I cannot say enough about her or Eye Q. read more

Frame selection is meh (there are a lot of frames on display, but it seems like they are just every color combination of what is otherwise a small selection of frames). When my partner and I left Seattle for Los Angeles in 2013 we had been long time patients of Dr.s Rob & Cindy Rosales of Phinney Ridge Eye Care. I have a particularly difficult to correct astigmatism and Dr. Rob is one of the very few able to get it right. After seeing 3 doctors and spending about $3,500.00 I didn't know what to do. I still couldn't see. Now it's 2015 and we are moving again. This time to San Francisco. My vision is getting worse and it's painful. My experience with IQ Optometry has been stellar, until this last month when I was due for my annual check-up. I have been going to IQ for close to twenty years, and have been very satisfied with the care. Unfortunately my opinion has changed, given the following circumstances: IQ has a policy that if you miss an appt. there is a $50 charge. I fully admit that I missed my appt. and called to explain the circumstances (I had a family crisis). No one at IQ bothered to return my call. After 20 years, the only communication that I received was a bill for $50 that I got in the mail the day after the snafu with the scheduling. I will pay the bill, and always planned to do so, but I will take my business elsewhere for our family of four. read more

Over the years i've popped into this store to attempt to buy glasses. Everytime, it's a weird experience. Either they were rude or they seem really indifferent. Today i thought that maybe i just got them on a bad day. Today was equally weird. 2 pairs of glasses in the window. When i asked to see them, they said no. They would not "disturb" the display. The fact that it's a fake house of cards that is taped seemed irrelevant. Also, wouldn't you rather sell a 200 dollar pair of glasses, possibly two, and not worry about the friggin display? I've seen the frames at Eye Q and like them a lot. I walked in and confirmed that they take my insurance. Later I went home and read the reviews and was excited to find out how much everyone loves this place. Only problem, you can't get a Saturday appt if your a new patient. Well, how do you become a patient if you can't come any other day? I have two kids and can't come in during their weekday hours. I'm able to come in early while my husband watches them. He can just be a little late for work. But, Eye Q doesn't take an appt until 10:30. I wouldn't be home until lunch to relieve my husband. That's too late for him. I guess I could get a babysitter, but at $15 an hour, that really increases the cost of my eye appt. What do other mom's do? All my other doctors open much earlier and take Sat appts. I could take an appt somewhere else and then fill the prescription at Eye Q. However, not so convenient to have to go to two appts. Time is a premium as it is with two small kids. I'm bummed. I think everyone should be able to get in on Sat, not just past clients. read more

I purchased a pair of Ray Ban in Feb 2013 and had damaged the lens six months later. I called in shortly after the damage to request the cost on the repair. The girl who worked there at the time quoted me $200 to replace both lens (she's no longer there -Cheryl ). I thought it was too expensive considering I can get a new pair in six months. Today, I came into their office for a new pair and also explained the situation to a new worker there and she said that the prior damage was covered under warranty. (Why didn't the other girl tell me this!?!) The warranty had expired and I was stuck with a pair of ray bans that could have been repaired (six months ago). If the girl had more experience or better informed her clients I would not have to spend my current insurance to repair these Ray Ban. This is incredibly frustrating. I should have stayed with my other office - Eye Gotcha in the Castro. Better service and more experienced professional. I blame the lack of training of the staff on this situation. read more

I had always really liked this place and been a patient for years but just walked in with a swollen eyelid as they were all walking in the doort to start their day and not yet busy with anything but still too busy to see me for a moment (I intentionally timed it to come in right at the moment they arrived so I could hop in for 5 minutes before the first patient) I suppose not having time for me is mildly understandable, although I am not sure what they were so busy with at that moment that they wouldn't make a patient their priority...and then it just got worse in a hurry when the bitchy lady from the back came out to adamantly tell me "NO....11:45 am....we are busy and thats when we can see you!" Just outright rude and the wrong tone to take to a patient.....er, former patient. So long Eye Q....work on those people skills would ya! read more

Fabulous little customer service oriented Optometry and Eye wear shop. Sure you can buy some glasses online and figure it all out yourself a little bit cheaper but you'll never recoup all the cost savings from the customer service fitting and drop in adjustments and repair. They do it up right here and it's worth every penny. read more

Dr. Tom is great! I love that they close at 7 pm on a couple days of the work week! She is extremely kind, patient and thorough. I just had my second annual exam and good news - my eyes are improving (though that is not why I am giving 5 stars). They also have a creative seasonal display which is always nice to admire when you walk down 24th. Her assistants are friendly and helpful as well, they actually call to confirm your appointments. I find their frames on the pricier side, but I'm glad that their service matches their top-notch products. They accept VSP too. read more

i had a great experience here yesterday and want to share- doctor tom was great at listening to my concerns, had answers to my questions and explained everything she was doing. there was no air-puff test for glaucoma- awesome, since i hate that little torture method. i did not feel rushed or patronized at all, like i have at other optometrists. also, i am hoping to wear contacts and dr. tom is willing to spend time to find the right kind for my eyes. Ok, being that i've been wearing glasses since the 7th grade, u sorta get tired of the "samo samo" frames in most opt's offices. Located in a safe and charming neighborhood...not to mention if u bring someone else who has an appointment, there are CUTE little stores all around that area!! (Ambiance and Rabat are my favs, but there's also cute stationery stores, wine shops, cheese shops, and other clothiers) IQ has LOTS of choices that other places dont have. All the lastest styles, different colors, shapes, sizes, u name it, they got it, and if they dont have it, they can try to order it. Kim n Kathy have been thru all my "glasses" phases...From cat eye Jean Paul Gautier shades (WHICH I LOST @ the kabuki movie theater back in 1999)(THAT RIGHT THERE tells u how long i've been a fan of Kim and Kathy's)...to my gold KATA frames, to TAKUMI frames w/ magnetic clip on shades...then to my pink stripe half frames, and now the FRAMELESS SILOUETTES... Their selection is quite extensive. I remember one year, i was frustrated on picking a new frame, and i tried on almost EVERY pair in the store. Kathy was VERY patient and understanding my frustration, she gave awesome recommendations. Both Kim and Kathy have a nack for what looks good on u...I mean, not everyone wears glasses...but if u need a pair and arent sure what to get...ask and maybe u too shall find! I get compliments on my glasses all the time, and i all our family and friends to IQ... They even take VSP insurance. Not sure what other type they take but Thank God they take mine! I was worried that my step daughter's glasses werent gonna be covered, but they figured it out under my plan! She wasnt sure which pair of glasses to get, and they helped explain everything to my step daughter so she was able to make a decision on 2 pairs she was totally stuck on. Ive been a customer for YEARS...and thru the years, they've had very courteous staff. From back in the day to the present day...Every time we visit exceptional service! They're always personable yet ALWAYS professional in their mannerisms. we always book our appointments several months in advnace. They even have a courtesy call a couple days before ur appointment so u dont forget. Just had my first appointment here and it was great. The space was very cute and the location is convenient for the Noe-dwellers. They were right on time (I can't remember the last time that's happened to me) and the doctor was awesome. Very sweet, patient, and friendly. I was in and out in a record 22 minutes! I've been a patient here for 8 years...and during 5 of those years I was actually living most fo the year in Dallas...I would just make sure to schedule my annual eye exam for a time when I was home for a visit. They have always been professional, friendly, and super helpfull...they even shipped my contact lenses to me in TX a couple times when I wasn't able to come in to pick them up. Great frames! I used to go to Eye Gotcha, another source of chic, unusual frames nearby, but they often recommended frames that just didn't fit my face, and I hated them (the glasses) once they were made up. (But kudos to that shop, they twice replaced ill-fitting frames.) The frames selection at Eye Q is fantastic, well chosen, up to date, good price range from moderate to pricey (but gorgeous).
