I called F &S Fireplace Systems to address two problems with my gas fireplace: 1) the flames were very low and 2) the fireplace was shutting off automatically and eventually coming back on after a period of time. The flames on the fireplace had previously been much higher. With the lower flames, the fireplace looked like a fake one. I was told the fee (exclusive of parts) would be $275 and that is all I would pay until the problems were fixed. Kevin and another person came to my home for 2 service calls. On the first visit, the fireplace was supposedly cleaned. However, after the cleaning, the flames were still the same, i.e., very low, and I was not getting feedback that any attempt would be made to fix the problem. I asked if there was a warranty on the work and was told it was 6 months. In a matter of 2 days, the fireplace shut off again automatically. I called and scheduled a second appointment. This time the thermocouple was replaced but again the problem with the low flames was not addressed. I was charged an additional $100 for the part but when I received the invoice, the purpose of the service call was "Callback." The price of a thermocouple for my brand of fireplace is $20. So, if the $100 was for the part, I was grossly overcharged even with a mark-up on it. Within another few days, the fireplace shut off again. At this point, I did not have confidence that F & S Fireplace Systems could fix the problems and I had spent $375, so I called another fireplace service company. The service person for the second company not only fixed the low flame issue (a valve needed to be adjusted), he also immediately knew why the fireplace was shutting off. There are "manual" and "temp" mode options on the fireplace remote. When in "temp" mode, the fireplace shuts off after the room reaches whatever max temperature has been specified. When I was turning on the fireplace, the remote ended up in "temp" mode. I was unaware of this feature, but you would think a company that repairs gas fireplaces would check for that. When F & S was here, I had inquired as to whether the thermocouple could be causing the fireplace to shut off but as it turned out the thermocouple was not the issue and did not need to be replaced. The person who finally resolved the problems also said the fireplace had not been cleaned well which I could see from the dirty glass and the soot covered components. Also, F & S Fireplace Systems placed no protective blanket on the floor so sooty fireplace parts were laid down on my area rug and the floor. I had to clean up the soot after they left. Based on my experience, I do not recommend F & S Fireplace Systems. read more
