Moving from Phoenix, Arizona to Alpine, California has not been easy; to say the least. I spent three weeks looking for this thing I like to call a "3-in-one" : a great hair braider, at an affordable price , somewhat close to me. Mamy was just that! When I called, she picked up right away, and was very sweet on the phone. I was scheduled for a time and date that worked just right for me! She had a client in the chair when I called and did not take up too much of my time, or their time. We settled the rest of the details( hair style, color and texture, price and products to bring) through text, which I absolutely love, because I could go back easily to be reminded what we discussed. I was the first client of the morning, and she was prompt and on time. Gentle touch on a tender head!! Walked out really feeling myself!!!! Now, the clothing shop at the front of the salon is epic! I spent about 45 minutes after my appointment shopping and finding something for pretty much everyone I love. The store is stocked with elegant, masterfully hand crafted jewelry and clothing from Senegal. There are fragrant oils and incense and all sorts of accessories and handbags to look through. I purchased a few hand threaded waist beads, a beautiful summer jumpsuit and a bathing suit, I can't wait to put them all on and head to the beach this when it warms up!! Called late on Sunday and she was able to do it Monday morning. I was in a time crunch so it was nice they accommodated it. I can not say enough about this establishment. First some background and context. I moved here from the Bay Area, from a shop I have been using for almost 2 decades. Have tried 2 braid shops recommended by friends and coworkers. There has been an issue each time. I received the best service here. I called on a Friday evening trying to get fit in last minute on the weekend. I explained I had open availability for any appointment for Saturday or Sunday. She told me she would call me back and let me know if she could fit me it. I was not optimistic. Within an hour, I had an appt for 11am on Sunday. Yessss! From there it only got better. I showed up on Sunday, 5 mins late. She started my hair by 11:15 and I was on my way home by 3p. 4 HOURS! FOUR HOURS! The work was immaculate. She took extra care in her cleanup and finishing of each twist - more than any other place I've been to; including my home shop. And like I said it only took 4 hours. The price was stellar. The quality is stellar. The time is unprecedented. I've had so many compliments from strangers, friends, and co-workers. I am so happy with my hair. read more

I've heard of Braids Plus for quite some time, formerly known as the Braidery, back when it was in the Rolando area. However, today I woke up and decided that today would be the day that the 'Fro would become the Cornrows. And the Braids Plus people were extraordinarily accommodating. I called at 11:00, asking when I could be fit in. The sweet, accented voice on the other line said that 4pm was the next opening. I said that'd be fine. However, I got a call an hour later saying that they'd had a cancellation and could take me at 1pm, so I jetted on down. Now, for those who may not know, my parents are quite divorced, and I was raised by a white mother who had no clue about my mutant hair and occasionally saw my distant father who had no idea really what to do either (http://static.px.yelp.com/photo/h244bagkg-rBAnzUdoZbPg/l). So, I have a little bit of discomfort with black hair places. I feel like there's this great big deep secret that I should know genetically, deep in the marrow of my bones or the helices of my DNA, that I just don't get. I almost turned around and drove home in nervousness, but decided to go and get my hair braided. It's happened before, I've liked it before, and I figured, what the heck? I walked into Braids Plus and found a very small, but very friendly little hair salon, with two Senegalese women smiling and working on customer's hair. One, a friendly woman named Coco with a bob hair cut and an infectious grin told me she'd be right with me. Then she sat me down and got to work on the 'Fro. Here's the thing: my hair impresses non-black people, but black people see through it immediately. I haven't been doing a very good job taking care of it, despite its sassy voluminousness, and the back around the nape of my neck is a bit of a distressing mess, with the beginning tendrils of dreadlocks forming. Coco slightly wrinkled her nose, yet smiled. "I'm sorry, I apologized. I'm a bad black person." She laughed out loud at that, and asked if I wanted her to wash my hair for $15 more to help with the problematic parts. I said sure, and she lathered, rinsed, repeated and started again. After fifteen minutes of waterboarding the hair Iraqi-style, I had to sit under a hair dryer (one of those OG '50's ones that made me feel like a housewife) for another twenty minutes. The soft, lilting African accents around me reminded me of South Africa, and I allowed myself to shift inside and move on "African time," instead valuing the people and conversation rather than efficiency of the visit. "Where are you from?" I finally asked, as she set to work on my limp, forlorn locks. "Senegal. In Dakar," she answered. "C'est vrai? C'est merveilleux! Je suis un professeur de l'histoire de l'Afrique," I said back, smiling. We then chatted back in French, she pulled strands of my hair back and began the long process of plaiting my hair while we struck up a fun conversation. At one point, another woman came into the shop and we all chatted a bit about things, then got back to work on my increasingly domesticated hair. I'm always amazed at how my unruly hair submits when the right person tells it what to do. Coco coaxed it right into place and it moved efficiently back into neatly plaited rows atop my head as the hours ticked by. Finally at about 3:45, about two and a half hours after I'd started (including the hairwashing, etc), I was done. The cost for a guy getting cornrows? $45. With the wash, it was $60. A deal, and I was glad for the conversation. I think I'll make it back one more time before I leave. The place is pretty damn cool, and this Halfrican is feeling happy about his new hair choice. :) And I picked up a phrase or two in Wolof! Not bad! read more

My experience was great at braids plus. My appointment was at 9:30 and I was in the chair at 9:30. My hair came out great and exactly the way I wanted it. Mimi did my hair and she was awesome. I'm glad I found them because being an african american it's hard to get your hair done here in San Diego because most ppl do not know how to handle ethnic hair so I decided to get braids and I'm from Atlanta so I'm really picky about my braids but she did them just the same as my ppl from back home. I went back yesterday for a touch up on my twists. I just got the front redone and I have to say it looks like brand new!! I'm happy with the results once again. Next time I go back I'm gonna get everything done over. This salon is amazing I recommend anyone go there, they are quiet ladies but get the job done! When you leave you'll be glad you went to them. Was a huge fan. My hair looked great at first but I noticed some of the braids coming undone after a couple of days. I put off washing it as long as I could because I was afraid I'd make them come undone faster. When I did wash it, I massaged my scalp gently to avoid frizzing them and I just let the water flow through the rest; I didn't wash vigorously. Anyway, less than 3 weeks after my visit I have several braids coming undone. 2 fell out. I paid hundreds to have my hair braided and I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to keep them in. The women who work there were really nice and I was hoping that I'd be retuning to them a few more times but unfortunately I'll have to try someone else. And sooner than I had planned. Also, they like to use fire to make the braids neater when they're done. I'm not a fan of that. My hair has always been singed in the past when a stylist does that. For me it defeats the purpose of having it braided which is to get it healthier. read more

I was so excited to make an appointment, until I asked for prices. She said $180 for Marley twists that are a little past shoulder length. The ones I have in now were $120 for hip length (usually $150 but she was having a special) I'm not cheap when it comes to hair BUT my hair grows quickly. I can't leave it up for 3 months like most women can. My hair grows an inch a month so the style only last me a month. So if it takes her 6 hours to do my hair at the price of the length I want ($280) she'll be getting paid $46/hour. More than what a nurse makes who is saving lives.... I get individuals, very long, with a blend of several colors, and I get compliments everywhere I go, often several times a day. I've been referring people to this place for years and will continue to do so. My appointment was at 9:30 but I didn't show up until 10 but no one was mad I was late and everyone was so friendly. I didn't catch the name of the young woman who did my hair but she did such a good job. She started my hair at 10 and was done by two. That's the quickest anyone has ever braided my hair my entire life and she did such an amazing job. I didn't want to write this review until a few weeks later I noticed braids falling out. It took Mimi 9 hours to do Senegalese twist. In the multiple times I have gotten my hair done, I have never sat that long for micros, twist, etc. I am not a huge fan of how much cutting and burning they do at the end. She took a candle and ran it along each braid and got really close to my scalp which caused melted wax to fall on my skin... The result was decent but within three weeks twists in the middle of my head started falling out, I am just happy they didn't take my hair with it. I would not return and wouldn't recommend this place. At 4 weeks it looks like I have had these twists in for months... read more

Wow, where do I start???? After reading the reviews on Yelp, my mind was made up. Got my appt with Mimi and then she called in her partner in crime, Coco (the "TT's". You need to ask them what that means!) I was there for about five hours or so (would have been shorter if I had remembered to bring the hair!) Both ladies were great and I love the way my hair came out (well it didn't actually come out!) If you want a good look, you need to call this shop. This shop is the best I've been to here in SanDiego coming from a southern girl who wants a lot for a decent price without paying a arm and a leg . Made my appt on Monday for Friday I was running late from work no problem they said, two ladies doing my Senegalese twist, pretty long down to my small of my back in in 4 1/2 hours!!!! My experience with Braids Plus was(-----).... My appointment was at 10am with MiMi, when I got there she was not their so another lady started on my head, MiMi arrived a little after 11am then took over it took her nine hours to finish my hair,(longest it's ever taken anyone to do my hair) I don't know if it's because I'm so use to the African braiders in Atlanta doing my hair or what but It was not the best experience for me, some of my twist around the edges did not come out right at all.
