As we all know, YMCA come in a variety of packages and refreshes. Some are swanky and recently renovated (Cincinnati Ohio had a huge overhaul in 2020) while others are a little more rustic with older buildings that feel like part maze part school and equipment that has seen several trips around the sun. The Fairborn Y sits somewhere in the middle. Not new, not dilapidated. The free weight room is a converted racquetball court. The exercise machines are all in great condition, but feel squished together into one smaller room, so that when you are using the chest fly machine, you can feel the breath of the guy on the leg press machine and the grunts of the barbell warrior vibrate in your chest. It is close quarters, but everyone is polite. The locker rooms are located in a back hallway and up a couple steps and I don't know about accessibility options, but it is also tight quarters in the locker rooms, especially the bathrooms. Two stalls are jammed into a corner, so plan your potty visits with time to spare. It definitely gets the job done and you can get a great workout in if you already know what you are doing. But for people new to the gym or to working out, I think they could do a better job of making you feel welcome and making it clear who you can go to for questions if you have them. The front desk folks were friendly, but the three times I have been there so far, the staff member in the weight room is on the computer or their phone and doesn't even look up to acknowledge people who are at the water cooler 3 feet away. I'm not entirely sure they ARE an employee. All in all, it is a solid workout and a fine stop if you find yourself in town. You can't beat the YMCA network and as I travel all over, I am grateful to have a place to get my sweat on. read more

Google hours say open at 12pm, I got here at 12:30 and there were no cars in the parking lot. At 12:45 a worker shows up and unlocks all the doors, and lets 2 people (who are not workers in). I walked in at 12:49 and she said "we don't open until 1pm." She let two other people in, and the hours on Google are incorrect. Sounds like poor management to me. Update: it's 12:51 and she let someone in behind me, while I had to wait in my car until 1pm. This is ridiculous. read more

I went on a tour of this YMCA today and the staff were very friendly!! George, the maintenance manager, did a great job giving us a tour! This YMCA may be small, but it has a lot of character and they try their best to make everyone feel welcome. They offer a lot of great programs, and I can't wait to come here when I come in October! read more

My partner and I have tried a couple of times to make a membership work here. But. Last summer, I went rogue and joined Planet Fitness. Then, a few months ago, my partner thought we should go back to the Y. So, I agreed, because it is closer to home. I did NOT quit Planet Fitness, because I hate this Y. Today, my partner finally decided we should just go to PF. I was ecstatic. The Fairborn Y is dark. The workout room is small. It has $15 Walmart oscillating fans mounted on walls throughout. Rude people come in and shut off the fans, for whatever reason, cutting off what little ventilation there is. Men who think they're cool drop weights after they grunt when they can lift them. This is supposedly against the rules. The women who work the front desk, while generally nice enough, don't respond to complaints to enforce the rules. Honestly, I wouldn't take them seriously either, if they told me to do/not do something. Every once in awhile, a new piece of equipment is squeezed in there and for that we are charged the same fee as if we belonged to one of the the nicer, newer, bigger Y's. I've been in other locations. They do not suck like Fairborn. I mean, yeah. It's Fairborn. What can you expect? The same thing the people in Huber Heights, Englewood and soon Xenia (they're getting a brand new Y). For what is there, it's too expensive. Ok. There's a pool. I can't swim, so woo hoo. And some of the other members' behaviors...that's a whole other review. So I get to go back to PF and this time, we'll both go. It's bigger, brighter, better ventilated, more equipment (as in more than two recumbent bikes) and cheaper. It's worth the extra few minutes drive. read more

It was a Sunday afternoon in late February. I was spending another weekend in Dayton with my daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. My son-in-law was home resting following his late shift at the ER. My daughter had the great idea to go swimming at the YMCA. We changed into our swim suits at home before driving here. My grandson and granddaughter had new brand new swim suits for the occasion. We arrived at the YMCA about 5 minutes before 1 pm when their door's open. There were only a few people waiting in line outside. When we got up to the counter the associate told us that the pool will not be open today because the lifeguard called in sick. They weren't able to get a replacement. With my daughter's family membership she has six guest passes. I was supposed to use one of them today. All I was able to do was look in the window at the empty pool in disappointment! It is a decent size pool. My grandson was also very disappointed. He likes coming here with his mom & playing with the big building blocks while she works out. Our alternative today was to go the playground across from the YMCA. It is a very nice one. There are multiple stations here with slides, swings and towers to climb. We all had quite a lot of fun. The weather was much warmer and the sky was once again blue. I hope to return here again to actually swim! I hope that there would be a reliable backup list of lifeguards in the future! I went to the Fairborn YMCA for a tour while my family and I were looking for apartments for my sister, who is moving to Ohio! It was a great YMCA. Everyone was friendly there and we got a great tour from George! They had equipment for everyone to use and the my had free weights! It's also nice how they have a park next to it too!! read more
