Took my 2010 Chevy Tahoe for rear brakes. Was quoted $720 for rear brakes and rotors. Seemed high but I needed it done. When I got the bill, I went through the breakdown. They charged me $396.98 for the NAPA Premium Brake Rotor and Pad Kit. I looked this up, by the part number they provided (AAANBK 8312ADK1). It is only, $273.97. That is a difference of $123.01. Subtracting the actual part cost from the total bill leaves $446.89. According to their invoice they worked on the car for 1.9 Hours. Dividing that out means their labor rate is $235.20 per hour. If I were to have gone to a Chevy dealership, their labor rate is only $190 and hour and that is GM certified work. This place is a total rip off and I will never return. Hopefully this review saves others from getting ripped off. read more

After reading the bad reviews that were completely ignorant, I thought I'd write a review of my experience. First I'd like to mention that these complaints are all from people who wanted something for free and didn't acknowledge the honesty of the shop when they were told the truth. My review was on a stop by with a leaking tire. I expected to drop it for a patch or be told I needed tires which I was fine with. When the owner saw it, he had me park it in front took 10 minutes to repair it permanently and charge me $20. It was fast, fixed and I appreciated every part of the transaction. read more

Can't agree with the bad reviews. Never had a bad experience here personally being a woman or felt scammed. Always made sure to pay attention to the conversation before dropping off my car and got a full explanation of what would be done. Sometimes I think people don't realize they actually have to pay for work on their cars and think labor comes free. I've always felt the prices were fair based on my research. For me, it's a convenient place for gas and good for service. Comments about a language barrier are just silly in 2020 - it's a gas station, you're likely not going to talk to folks with PhDs, be real. As far as rude folks, I've seen a change in staff and from what I can tell everyone there now is very warm and welcoming. I'd say go in having done your research and form your own opinion. read more

The team at Fairlington Sunoco is great. I've been there a bunch of times, but today in particular was a life saver. After having been lied to by Brown Mazda about what my car needed to pass inspection ($220 to clean one headlight...), I immediately brought it here. They identified the *actual* problem, a $15 lightbulb, and had it changed, re-examined, and out the door in a half hour. I've had mixed experiences with Fairlington Sunoco. At times they've quickly fixed a flat tire. Another time they told me I needed an expensive repair when I took my car in for an oil change. My own mechanic told me the repair was not needed. This week I took it for inspection and they failed my car. I took it to my mechanic who told me the car was fine. This time I returned with a State Police officer to have the mechanic show where the problem was. There was no problem. The officer handled it well and instructed the mechanic in how to properly inspect a car. Then I got my sticker....but the officer noticed that the mechanic had not filled out the back of the sticker, making it not legal. I finally left with my properly inspected car and a valid sticker, but it took a lot of time and not a little stress between getting to my own mechanic and connecting with State Police. You can use them, but don't trust them if they tell you you need a repair. read more

Small businesses with no waiting room, one has to wait outside if you are getting your automobile serviced one has to wait in the elements. They do offer you a seat outside. I still have yet to have a problem at this gas station, it's the only one I go to in the fairlington area. The mechanics and owner there are honest people and don't try to scam anyone. As someone who knows cars and knows what is a reasonable price to pay for service-they charge a great price for their excellent labor. I went here for my emissions and safety inspection and failed, one of the reasons being something with the headlight, although I didn't really understand what he said was wrong with it. He offered to fix everything for $150, but I said no because I wanted my mechanic to look at the car. I had planned on taking my car into the dealership for an overdue tune-up anyways. The dealership replaced the windowshield wiper that the Sunoco failed me for, but the dealership mechanic was clear that there was nothing wrong with my headlight. I went to another station for a new safety inspection and passed immediately, with no work done on the headlights. And this place only charged $16, half of what Sunoco charged. Basically, I think the Sunoco mechanic saw a young woman walk in the door and took the opportunity to overcharge and fabricate a needed repair. I won't go back. read more

WOW! Legal Criminals. These guys give crooked mechanics a bad name. I went in for a check engine light and told them I'm at 30K miles and need new spark plugs. They hooked my car up to the computer and said it is a code only the dealer can read and that I should get it and the spark plugs taken care of by the dealer. I thought "Wow, he is turning down business" until I saw the invoice for $120. I asked why? He said for the check engine light service and spark plug check. I said "Wawawawhat? You don't know why the light is on and I told YOU the spark plugs are bad." He said that is the charge for confirming. I also noticed a "Shop Supplies" fee - which no supplies were used. He said all invoices pay that, every customer pays that fee. I told him just because you screw everybody doesn't make it right. We had previously had good luck with having this Sunoco servicing our older car, but the last time we went there, they performed $500+ worth of service without our permission. My husband took the car in and asked them to look at it, they called him back and said it needed both front bearings replaced. He told them to wait on doing it and he wanted to think about it. This place is a total scam. I've been bringing my car here for many many years. Today I dropped it off and asked if they could figure out why it was making a sound. Four hours later I called and spoke to Abdul who told me he figured out what the noise was but they the dealership had to do it. Why did that take four hours?? When I went to pick up my car I got a $65 bill for the specific repair he said he couldn't do. The cashier said that's the minimum they charge for an estimate. I've never paid for an estimate in my life, even there, but if there is a fee it needs to be told prior to picking it up. They didn't tell me at drop off or on the phone. The two men yelled and argued with me. No customer service whatsoever. How can you speak to your customers like that?? The paperwork is a lie. It says the work was done. But it wasn't. It also says my mileage was the same at drop off and pickup but they drove it 7 miles. Don't take your car there! It's not the same as it used it be. read more

Excellent service on my older (13 yr old) car. I had my car serviced here for basic oil / filter/tire changes. They provided my car with both safety and emissions inspections. I also had troubleshooting completed on some engine, suspension, A/C and electrical issues. All work performed was completed quickly and professionally. I've own Japanese, German, Swedish and American cars and this is the place where I take my cars when I don't have the time to fix them or I'm not in mood to get greasy, I'm not going to talk about the whole staff cause I don't have the need to talk or deal with everybody, I just address my issues to CESAR, he is the expert at this place, he is the one who has taken care of my babies for 5 years, he is the most honest auto technician I've met and all those reviews won't change my mind. I know a lot of people who live in the Fairlington neighborhood and they have been costumers for years, so either those reviews are from cheap people or just haters. I know, the people who visit this website are going to be first timers or people who don't trust their current technicians so I'm going to point out some tips than might help not only for this shop... -If your budget is limited at the moment, you have to ask how much do they charge for a diagnosis before leaving your car. -Once they have a diagnosis ready ask them to let you know the estimate of the whole service before they start changing pieces, so at least you'll have an idea about how much the whole cost is going to be and you won't be surprised. -If you have some knowledge about cars don't tell the technician what has to be replaced, this is going to help to see how trustful the technician is if it's your first time at any shop. -If you have an European car you have to understand that the final cost of most repairs are going to be completely different than those who own Toyotas from the 90's. -If you don't want to pay for your car problems, you better start trying to sell your car, trade it for a less complicated one or the public transportation could be another choic,e. -If this shop is the most convenient for you, just talk to CESAR, I'm pretty sure he will solve your car issues. read more

Do not go here. These men will rip a woman off. Had my car towed to them for a battery and they wanted $180 for it. I asked them what model the battery was, so I could verify that it cost $120, and the guy was livid and said "come get your car". They probably expected me to rollover since my car was dead, but I didn't, and I feel much better knowing I didn't get screwed and taken advantage of. I would give these guys 5 stars, but their desk guys suck, so I can't. My car is 9 years old and I got a ticket for an expired inspection last night. I looked at the windshield and it was WAY late. Like 2 months + out of date. I expected to get a lot of hassle from whoever looked at it. As a female, I've had so many shady mechanics try to sell me crap that I don't need. With the state of my car, there was A LOT they could have picked on. I was really hoping that I'd get in and out for like $250ish. I meant to get up and go early in the morning. Duke Street Speedy Lube recently changed into a Valvoline that doesn't do inspections. Boooo. They pointed me towards a shoppe I couldn't find, and two gas stations that I totally wouldn't trust since they gouge on prices. The garage I tried on Duke didn't have their inspection tech on duty. Sad trombone. By the time I got to this Sunoco, it was well after lunch. The bays were hopping. Rather than turn me away, they were super welcoming. I don't give out my mobile number to almost anyone, so these guys ran into something or several somethings and just fixed what they found. They said that they would have contacted me first, and I believed them. I wanted to get an oil change on top of the inspection, but the first desk guy didn't relay that to them. On pick up, it was a different desk guy than the one that I checked in with. He wasn't any better than the first guy, and he gave me the wrong keys, which made me worry that he gave me the wrong bill. Their bills are definitely shady since it was just a receipt, but I blame that on the desk clerk and NOT the mechanics. When I got in the car Isweartagawd they fixed everything that was a matter of tightening or a bolt here or there or lube that they possibly could have. My car has sounded like pewp for at least six months. My husband has a love affair with potholes. I had two rednecks tow my car with a chain and dislodge some of the heat shield beneath the car. There is NO DOUBT in my mind that these guys are way more honest than the dealership. They even used the parking brake when the asphalt there is flat. I know that I've been able to reverse my car with it engaged before, but not this time! Even though I live nearby, it's not making funny noises any more and it seemed to have a bunch more pep. They replaced the right rear tail light ($77 on ebay, $90-$200 elsewhere) and it definitely looked new to me. I gave the mechanic a pat on the back and a hearty thanks. What did all of this run me? $78, about what it would have cost for an oil change and an inspection. I am SOOOOO happy. I will definitely go back again. read more

Avoid going there for any repairs. If you do you go for repairs do your research ahead of time on cost of parts and labor. They charged me 2x what the parts actually cost and had an extra hour of service over what it should have been. I checked three service stations in the immediate area and they all would have charged me half as much for the entire repair. When I confronted the manager about it he said that he had to pay his bills somehow. They will fleece you for every dime. Don't use them. If you have to, then do your homework. read more

I will NEVER return here. My car stalled out in Alexandria, VA, and I called AAA to have my car towed. I was new to the area, and did not know of any credible auto repair shops around, so I asked AAA to send me to one that was certified by their company standards. Upon arriving to Fairlington Sunoco Service Center, I was stared at by many of the mechanics and felt uncomfortable. The language barrier was difficult to get past, but I tried to help that by giving suggestions (e.g. electrical, alternator) for them to understand what the problem could be. I filled out my paperwork and walked to the nearest rental car service at a Lexus dealership. While in the dealership, I received a call and was rudely interrogated by one of the mechanics telling me I was wrong about the alternator and asked why I would think it was the alternator in the first place. The next day, I picked up my car and they charged me $400 for new spark plugs and a battery. My car interior was muddy, my gas was under a quarter tank (I had a half tank when I arrived, and my car gets 28 mpg highway and 21 in city) and my sound system settings that were tuned up to the amplifier located in my trunk had been tampered with. Five days later, my car stalled again. I called and asked to talk to a mechanic. One of the mechanics told me that they spent an entire hour driving my car around the city (without my permission) and said "nothing was wrong with it". Six hours later, the manager Milton Hahn called and told me that "The car was not broken down. There was nothing wrong when you brought it in. There wasn't even a battery light on." (the battery light appearing on the dash was one of the things I reported that happened when my car broke down) However, he still charged me $400 for a new battery and spark plugs. I told him I didn't think it was right for me to pay for something that he knew wasn't broken. I asked for my money back since he did not fix my car and had no evidence of my car needing those repairs, and I told him about the conditions my car was in when I received it. He began to yell profanities that were VERY offensive toward me, (such as: B****, "who do the f*** do you think you are lady? You have no idea who you are dealing with.", and my personal favorite: "I dare you to come here and try to get your money back.") and hung up the phone. His threats were very scary, and I was not comfortable going there again alone to talk with him about it any further. Instead, I decided to take matters into my own hands to ensure his crude behavior and offensive demeanor will be documented and investigated. Fairlington's overview facebook summary is this: "Fairlington Sunoco is an honest and efficient gas station located in Alexandria, VA and tries to do their best at having honest-to-goodness, efficient auto services. We do not lie or cheat you out of your money like the others, and take pride in that. We diagnose your car with the most advanced technology in automotive repair, and have your car available to you faster than the other guys." So, I took my car into dodge -- and they ran a real diagnosis (that required a computer chip assessment, not a one hour joy-ride) and said that it was an electrical programming part that needed to be replaced. AND that I NEVER NEEDED a new battery or spark plugs. Dodge diagnosed this problem within a few hours and clearly told me what was wrong with it, and are taking care of it in full. NOTE: It's obvious that the comment below me about Fairlington being AAA certified was posted to boast about their "credibility". However, I filed a report today requesting their business to be re-evaluated by AAA who is VERY determined to do something about this. Given that AAA is known for good service and cares about what happens to their drivers, my experience (and others' negative experiences that have been posted) shows that this place is not reflective of that in the slightest. It is clear these guys are out for money and don't care about your safety and the reliability of your car on the road. AAA agreed that it would be in their best interest to look into this business and prevent Fairlington Sunoco's poor work from affecting any other AAA members in this area that need auto service in the future. They were so unbelievably apologetic and are notifying me soon about how they are going to deal with Milt Hahn and the way he runs his business. I am also having them investigated by the Better Business Bureau of Virginia on their credibility and treatment of their customers. And who knows, maybe I'll get a refund. Hopefully this will put everyone who has had a bad experience with a peace of mind about this place, and to let everyone know to NOT go here for service! RUN RUN RUN. Had my car inspected and it was failed. Told my motor mount was broken and the engine was going to fall out and there was a horrible oil leak that would lead to the destruction of my engine. He wanted $300 to fix the motor mount alone. Took my car to a honest mechanic and learned that the engine mount was not broken, but had a small crack and should not have failed inspection and the oil leak was a $6 fix. I chose to have the motor mount replaced, even though it was not required, and it cost $150. RUN RUN RUN. Classic rip off auto shop. I won't even go back there to get gas now. read more

Went in for state inspection and it was failed by Abdul. Told me I needed two things repaired and they could do it for about $520. Told him to just reject it. Go to pick my car up and now Abdul tells me there is a third thing wrong with it. Took it to Japanese Auto City on Glebe. These kind and honest folks told me only one of the three things was actually bad and even that was a stretch. He fixed it for about 60% of what Abdul wanted to charge me. Then I took it to another station to have it completely re-isnpected ( I was not going back to Sunoco). They said "there is nothing wrong with your car - I don't know why it would have failed". Went to this Sunoco for an oil change. Abdul called me and said it was done, but asked if I wanted to do a radiator flushing. I initially declined but then said, "does it need it?". To which Abdul responded and said "yes, it is dirty." So I think this is a simple, routine maintenance such as replacing a filter or something like that - In line with the $29 oil change I'm getting. I show up and the bill is $400 and when I look at it, the flushing was $180 and there was an additional $180 worth of charges for power steering flushing. Abdul said that he did say "Radiator and steering flushing," but at no point did he tell me that that was $360 of extra charges - which I wouldn't have done. Admittedly I did not ask how much it was because the context of the conversation implied it was a simple, quick, and inexpensive service. They ended up removing about $85 worth of service, because Abdul admitted that he did not tell me the prices in advance, but I am still very unhappy with the way I was treated. I've had prior smaller issues with this place for inspections and other smaller services, but I've continued to swing in to the shop for gas and quick fixes because it is typically on my way. Not anymore, this is the final straw for me. Strongly recommend against this place, as you can have no faith that they are being honest and forthcoming with you. read more

Worst Service Ever! I paid their station to run an emissions test, which they charged me for. I later realized they had not given me the paper work authorizing the emissions test to send into the DMV. I returned to the station and they realized they had erroneously not run the test. The mechanic offered to refund me the money but the manager - MILT HAHN - refused. He ultimately cussed me out and slammed the door of his office on me. I have never had such rude customer service as that from Milt Hahn. I will never go back here again. read more

Took my Escape for oil change. Manager Milt Hahn tried to talk me into an air filter which is reasonable but not at $80.00 for the part. I said no and found the filter for $12.00. Had an emergency with my wife's Volvo regarding a tire. Was cleaned out with a $125 charge for the tire pressure sensor. These things are available for $30.00 to $60.00. Good service people - greedy manager. He got me once - I would push my car past them to go somewhere else. Manager is rude. It's a mystery if they ever get repeat business. read more
