The owner/Manager Andre, is very pleasant, very knowledgeable and helpful. He is always ready to answer questions, help solve your issues with cleaning or tailoring. If you're stuck with a clothing issue he helps you through it, whether it's cleaning, altering or trying to figure out where to buy from. It's very hard to find a place where the manager cares about the customer. He not only shows he cares, but takes time to help you with anything. I highly recommend Fairmount Cleaners and use them for all my clothing needs, in large part because of Andre. read more

I would not recommend Fairmount Cleaners. I dropped off a new bridesmaid dress to be hemmed and when I picked it up, it had a big stain across the front. The staff said they would clean the stain. When I came back to pick up the dress again, the stain was still there. The staff said they would try to clean it again but they needed at least a week. Fairmount Cleaners had already had my dress for over a month and I needed the dress for a wedding that week. The staff gave me a hard time about cleaning it in less than a week and told me I could bring it back after the wedding for them to try to get the stain out then, which would be of no help to me. Instead I brought the dress to Kim's Cleaners & Tailoring (2008 Sansom Street) and they were able to get the stain out and return it to me in 4 days at a reasonable price! Dropped off clothes on cleaning and alterations on Monday and said I needed it by Thursday. I called back the next day (Tuesday) and said I needed one of the outfit on Wednesday. They are closed on Wednesdays. Nevertheless they got it done in short order and opened up briefly just so I pick up the order. Rushed home to try everything on and everything was perfect. I took pants in to be hemmed. They did not follow my very clear instructions and made a mistake and almost ruined my pants. They initially wanted to charge me to correct the mistake that they made. They were not apologetic and in fact were rude. I also find them overpriced and they take a very long time to complete alterations. I have had more than one bad experience there, and I will not be going back. I advise you to look elsewhere in the neighborhood for a good tailor. read more

I've been going to Fairmount Cleaners for seven years now, and it is one of the reasons I love living in Fairmount. Andre, the owner, puts a high premium on customer service. I'm greeted by name every time I walk past, let alone walk in. He knows how I like my dry cleaning done. He always makes the time-frame work for me, and he makes my clothes look great. There have been a few times where I was running late and had to pick up clothes, and I called ahead, and he kept the store open for me. Absolutely do not recommend Fairmount Cleaners. I dropped off my wedding dress and veil to be steamed for my wedding and my husbands jacket for our rehearsal dinner to be altered. We went to pick them up a day after we were told they would be done and none of them were even started and this was days before our wedding. They assured me to leave my dress there until days before so my husband would not see it in our house. Then the morning of my wedding when I took my dress out my wedding dress was never streamed and I had to steam my own dress the morning of my wedding. I called them to let them know and they're response was "things happen". I was told by one worker to get my money back and when I called to go in to get it they were very rude and said they have to talk to the owner first and would call me when I could come in for my refund and they never called. Everyone was very communicative and responsive to questions/requests and timing- it under 2 weeks they were able to add an additional 2 inches with of material to let out the dress, which involved a complete redesign of the back zipper. After many frustrating experiences, I was recommended cannot cleaners. Approximately eight months ago I started bringing them all of my dry cleaning and laundry. The work was outstanding! Even their tailoring was beautifully done at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, two of my shirts came back damage from the dry cleaning plant. I was immediately brought this to their attention. Many other previous dry cleaners i had damaged my shirts in the past, all of them said the same thing not our fault, you buy cheap shirts. Well one hurt or anything but cheap! Same-day dry cleaning without a hassle or hefty rush charge. Drop off at 10:00. Pick up at 5:00. Exactly the amount of starch I ask for. Never lost or burned. Top-notch garment repairs. Free collar tabs (the good kind). Convenient hours: 'till 7:00 most nights. Many times, they've noticed a missing button and sewn a match on for free, without a word. Polite, helpful employees from the neighborhood who appear to be treated fairly. All different kinds of folks at this place, but I almost never see a new face behind the counter. I've even heard good things about them from a dog park friend who services dry cleaning equipment. My job has made me way too sensitive to BS, and I'm always cringing at phoney-friendly service. This place somehow doesn't strike me that way. The owner is young, with a laid-back, genuinely nice vibe. If I'm not in a hurry, I always get a little conversation. The guy remembers how old my son is and asks about him. Even if I don't come in for a month or two. Heard from my dog park friend that his dad had a dry cleaning business in the neighborhood years ago. Old-school service and personal courtesy are rare these days. This place has them in spades. to add insult to injury, the owner offered to put new buttons on the suit. I waited a week and came back on the day I was told the jacket buttons would be replaced; no jacket and was told to come back the following week. I returned and when the jacket was returned, the buttons had not been replaced. I was then told to come back the next day and the owner would shop for the matching buttons; when I returned, I found that they had used a marker to cover up the broken buttons. At this point the owner had the nerve to tell me that my jacket couldnt be new because the sleeve buttons did not match each other - some of them had lettering. When I looked the lettered buttons were the signature of the italian designer and all their suits come this way but I was so furious and felt so stupid for trying to work this out one last time, that I left and found another cleaner in the neighborhood who is great. No review for cleaning but just got jeans altered here. Andre took the jeans (a simple hem) and priced them lower than what I expected ($12 total) and in time shorter than what I expected (3 days). I was hugely disappointed. I brought in a dress, hoping to have it let out slightly in the bust and hemmed. I was first told that it would be impossible to let the dress out. This is understandable; if there is no fabric, there is no fabric. The alteration to the bust was not completely necessary (it fit, but just caused a little to much cleavage). I said I understood the inability to let it out, but I would like the dress hemmed. I was told "it wouldn't be worth it to hem it, too expensive." I tried to explain that I understood that there were three hems, but I really wanted to wear the dress. I was told again it would not be worth it. I was not greeted when I walked in the door, I was not asked to try the dress on to see what alterations were needed, and was very rudely turned down. I cannot speak to their dry cleaning services, but I would not recommend it for alterations. read more

The guys here are great - their services are fairly priced, they do good work, and they'll usually work with you on your turnaround time when you're in a pinch. I needed a bridesmaids dress altered and had to make sure wherever I took my dress it wasn't going to be ruined. The reviews appeared good for Fairmount and I live close by so I gave it a try. I brought the dress in 3 weeks before the wedding and it was ready in 2 weeks (I had the date that it would be ready but they never called me to say it was ready). They called to see if I was ok with the price before they did the work - $25 which seems reasonable to me to have the halter part of the dress shortened. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars was because the owner seemed grumpy and not friendly when I first went in and mumbled something about them "having to take it to the other store because he was so busy" although I assured him I didn't need it by the next day. That would be my only gripe but I knew to expect that from reading the reviews. Got the dress this morning and it fit like a glove! Very happy with the work and I will be returning. read more

Since moving to Fairmount I have been using Fairmount Cleaners. Actually, even when I lived in Manayunk I would travel out to use them. They are hands down the best dry cleaner I have ever used. They take pride in their craft, as this is a multi-generational establishment. Andre really knows his stuff, and is ever so willing to explain everything to you. I love that part. A true test of a business is how they respond to mistakes. Let's be honest, mistakes happen. No one can bat a thousand. My girlfriend had her dress tailored there. Unfortunately, the measurement was not taken properly and the dress ended up being too short. Worst part was, she got her dress back the day of a wedding we had to go to. In a bind, my girlfriend had to buy another dress. After the wedding, she called Andre and without a single moment of hesitation, he refunded the cost of the original dress !!!AND!!! paid for the second dress she had to purchase. Of course the alternation cost of refunded as well. Like I said, mistakes can happen, but the way you respond really says a lot. Brought 5 dress shirts to get dry cleaned. They broke buttons on every shirt include all the buttons on one of them. Didnt get the stains out that i specifically asked about. They also somehow managed to stain another shirt and leave imprints on them. And most of all didnt check their work before allowing me to pay and pick my shirts up. This review is primarily about shoe/leather repair here. I have had many items fixed here, and the price is a deal- however after the last few errors it no longer seems worth the hassle. In the past I have had items half repaired, taken longer, not gotten a call when my item arrived (though they told me they would because it was delayed due to backlog). I have had shoes repaired and polished and usually it's worth the hassle/delays. However the last time was ridiculous. I dropped off 4 items at the same time (2 pairs of shoes, a purse, and a leather wallet) when the items where returned I noticed the wallet had not been touched, and the shoes where shotty at best. The wallet was returned at no extra charge, when I picked it up the 2nd time, only one pocket of two was fixed. I returned the wallet for a 3rd time, and it was repaired, although it took a week longer then they originally said. (all in all almost 4 weeks to repair two pockets). The stitching on the heel and side seem made my very nice, expensive Frys look cheap and poorly made. Further, the new sole had no traction, and wore out faster then the original. Similarly the stitching on my purse strap looked poorly done, and cheap. However, so far it has held up. The staff at the location was apologetic and understanding when I had to return items, however good customer service cannot make up for a inconsistent, and bad product. Look, if you want leather repaired etc. at low cost come here. But if you want to KNOW that it will be done well, and in a timely manner do not come here. read more

I don't recommend this place for quick dry cleaning. I left three suits to be cleaned on a Thursday and was told that everything would be dry cleaned by Saturday afternoon. I also stressed that I would be traveling out of town Monday morning so I needed everything to be complete by Sunday, at the very latest. I arrived to pick up my clothes on Sunday afternoon and only one of my suits was fully completed, the other two had only the jackets done. I'm not sure how the pants could've gotten separated from the jackets like that. The person was pretty nonchalant when bringing this issue to my attention, however, he did offer to comp the bill. Although this was a nice gesture, I am still without my suits for a business trip. read more

1. I don't know they say they are green, or why other reviewers say they are green. The only green dry cleaners are those that use Co2 cleaners and this place is NOT one of those. The same harmful chemicals they use at all other dry cleaners they use here. I think they call themselves green because you can recycle your hangers here...aka, save them a few bucks so they don't have to buy more hangers. 2. I'm astonished that people say this place is fast. At other dry cleaners I've gone to my clothes have been ready the next day. Here, I had to wait FIVE BUSINESS DAYS (plus one Sunday, so 6 days total) to get my clothes back. Really??? 3. Good service? Yeah right. There's the sullen silent teenage boy who never says a word. Then there's the woman who talks on the phone while ringing me up. And when I tried to pay with a check she stared at and could not comprehend why I was trying to pay with a check (apparently she only takes checks from people she 'knows). Then I asked if they took credit card and she rattled off a list of cards they took...so I handed her one on the list and she just stared at it again - Apparently that WASN'T one of the ones they took. Convenient? Yes. However I am finding a new place. Convenience does not trump a lack of professionalism/politeness I'm sure I could find elsewhere. So long, Fairmount Cleaners... read more

I *really* want to like this place. Here's why I don't and why I'll never go back: 1. Dry cleaning. Not good. I've tried skirts, slacks, sweaters, and blouses. They've returned wrinkled and lint-ridden, with missing buttons and once, a ripped seam. 2. The tailor. Rude and incompetent. He's a little old man and he sews by the window and, yes, that's really sweet. But while its cute and inexpensive, when you factor in return trips and frustration because he didn't do it right the first time, you get significantly less than what you paid for. And its not cute anymore. Two examples: A bridesmaid dress to be taken in slightly in the bust. When I picked it up and tried it on at home, it was like he hadn't touched it. After one more try, it was still a little roomy but I made do, simply so I didn't have to go back. Months later, I brought in a dress for an event happening in a week. The alteration was much less complicated this time, so I thought I'd try again. Andre, the tailor's nephew, pinned me up (just a little taken in along the bust and waist). When I brought it home, the bust and waist hadn't been touched, and I couldn't get the dress over my hips! I called Andre, who apologized profusely, asked me to bring it back, and promised to have it fixed the following day. When I tried it on at home the following night, I could get it over my hips this time, but it was skin tight - and still absolutely nothing had been done to the bust and waist. I brought it back the next morning (now the day before the event). The tailor said he could do nothing because he cut the excess fabric. I requested my money back, and he stormed away. Even the other employee remarked that he "couldn't talk to people". I go to a tailor to get my clothes fixed, not to make new friends, so if the tailor is shrewd, it's cool. But if you can't do your job either? Game over. Now, why I really want to like this place: otherwise excellent customer service. Throughout this entire second debacle, Andre and his other employees (except for the tailor) were kind, fair, understanding and flexible. Andre refunded me for the alterations plus the cost of the dress. It was much appreciated, and I give them a star for that. But if your core service isn't quality, eventually that lovely customer service means nothing. So I will not be going back. read more

What a great find! A convenient GREEN dry cleaners right on Fairmount Ave. It's perfect for dropping off clothes on my way to work in Bala and picking them up on my way home the same or next day! The owner, Andre is a great guy -- smart and always as interesting views on current events. This is a nice feature in the neighborhood that has non-discript cleaners on every block. I like the ability to talk to my cleaners -- they are taking care of my threads I need to know that they are gonna take care of them! Most other cleaners in the neighborhood haven't a clue how to talk to the customer or clean the clothes. Oh and BEST of all, for 5 bucks you get a garment bag/reusable finished bag (aka no more useless plastic bags!) and you can drop off the bag and everything is taken care of cause you are a VIP! read more

I like the guy, Andre, who owns the place. He is professional and respectful, always calling me Mr. _______. I like that type of customer service - it is nice to be remembered and welcomed to someone's business. They are super fast, which is much appreciated. The dry cleaning is done well. One of his employees was once a bit rude to me (however, most of the others are very polite). I told him later and he apologized profusely, also giving me a discount card on my next visit. I would have continued to give him my business, but this solidified him as my dry cleaner. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the tailor. He did hem a pair of pants once, and he did a fine job on that. However, he has been difficult and slightly belligerent on other occasions insisting that a certain article of clothing does not need alterations (who is he to decide that?!) or that it shouldn't be done (I really think he just can't or doesn't want to do some of the work). I moved to Francisville last year and I've been going back to my old cleaners until now so I decided to give a local business a try. I will say that the people at Fairmount Cleaners were very nice and they went the extra mile to get some pieces back earlier than they had originally promised. I don't know if it was the fact that the day I went there it was raining, but I noticed there was a musty smell in the store while I was picking up my order. Unfortunately, when I got home, I found that all of my clothes stink like mildew! Now if the Fabreze dousing that I've been giving them for a whole day doesn't do the trick I'm going to have to go somewhere to get them re-cleaned and hope that works. Ugh! read more

Fairmount Cleaners is one of the best I have found. They take care to ensure your clothes are cleaned with care. I have brought many different types of materials (down comforter, work clothes, silk, etc) and they are cleaned well. They ensure that my sweaters are hung carefully on a hanger, unlike others who just throw it on a thin metal hanger. Pants are pressed nicely and hung. No wrinkles.
