I took 2 pairs of pants to be hemmed; I was a bit concerned because both had elastine and not that easy to hem. For the 2 pants it was $40, which I thought it was a bit high. However, when I got back my pants they did a great job (like it came straight from the store). I was so happy with the quality of work $40 seemed reasonable now. Awful Experience - Dress Ruined and No Accountability I've been a loyal customer of Spruce Hill Cleaners for about a year, but after what happened this month, I'll never go back. My boyfriend dropped off my $569 dress (purchased at the end of August) to be cleaned after I wore it once. It was only lightly soiled, mostly from sweat under the arms. When we picked it up, I was shocked to find bleached-out spots along the hemline that completely ruined the dress. I brought it back and spoke with the owner, expecting her to take responsibility or at least offer a solution. Instead, she was disrespectful and dismissive, claiming I must have caused the damage myself after leaving the shop. There was no apology, no effort to make things right. After this experience, I will never trust Spruce Hill Cleaners again. If you value your clothes and want to be treated with respect, take your business elsewhere. read more

I live in west Philly, and when I started collecting mens 1950's vtg clothing, I knew I had to find a local tailor who could handle such delicate pieces. I did some research and saw another post on their yelp page, where another satisfied customer was sharing their experience having vtg clothing tailored here, so I thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed. I've been coming here for the last two years, and have had countless pieces tailored to perfection. Great cleaners in the Spruce Hill area. I believe the owners are husband and wife, and they are very friendly. The clothes are cleaned promptly and well cleaned. I'm not exactly sure how dry cleaning cleans clothes, but apparently Spruce Hill Cleaners does. I dropped stuff off on a snow day 4 days later, only two of which were business days, my shirt and pair of pants came back nice and clean. They looked for stains, asked about starch. Everything by the book, with a smile. These are very friendly, polite people. I couldn't be happier with the service, Spruce Hill Cleaners comes highly recommended. One last thing, results are the only thing that matter to me, but I know many of you care about the environment. The packaging claimed Eco-Friendly cleaning. I used to be a long-time customer here at Spruce Hill Cleaners, and thought the service was always nice, and reliable, albeit a little slow. None of the dry-cleaning is done here on-site. It is shipped out somewhere else to be cleaned and then brought back for customer pickup, which I assume causes a longer-than-average wait. Over the past few months I mostly just had dress shirts and the occasional pair of paints cleaned here without any major problems. Then I brought in a suit that I need cleaned for an interview, and on the day of interview, taking the suit fresh out of the packing from the cleaners, saw there was a brand new gash around 2 inches long in the sleeve of the jacket. I was in another city at the time and so didn't have anything else to wear, and was not happy about rolling up to my interview looking like I just got back from a well-dressed sword fight. When I returned to Philadelphia I went back to Spruce Hill Cleaners to explain the situation, I was surprised that the woman behind the counter was not at all sympathetic to my situation, and refused to take any responsibility for gashing up a $350 suit that I could ill-afford to lose. She offered to sew it up, but explained that it would still be very visible. I explained that would not solve the problem, and said I would take it elsewhere. At this point she got really angry and started raising her voice about how she has been there for five years and never made this mistake. I asked her if she watches all the people to whom she ships out the clothes for cleaning; she said no. Regardless of where in the cleaning process the jacket was torn, I was sadly disappointed that she didn't take any responsibility for ruining a loyal customer's suit. Most good cleaners will want to take care of customers, and will do their best to fix any errors. It was also my mistake for not checking the suit when I picked it up, but it's not something I routinely do when I trust a cleaner. This place is great for cleaning a cheap shirt here or there, but don't bring your fine garments here: Spruce Hill Cleaners won't take responsibility for ruining your nice clothes. read more

If I can give 0 stars, I would, I paid 33 dollars to hem and taper a Ralph Lauren pants, After I received it, the taper was not well done, uneven and had a hole in it. After they fixed it for me, it was still uneven, the lady shop keeper insisted that people can't see and it was fine... When we pay for a job, we expect a good job. There are lots of good and bad bits about this place. They fix sweater snags (yay!), but they're finicky about paying with credit. My clothes typically come back clean and pressed, but forget about them getting out stains (I have to take my clothes elsewhere if they're stained). They did a BEAUTIFUL job on a pair of dress shorts I needed altered (taken in at the waist). But charged almost $20 for the alteration. So. Not awful. Not amazing. I'm a big fan of SH Cleaners for both cleaning and alterations. Been using them for about four years now. I buy a lot of vintage clothes for next-to-nothing and then take them to be altered. The (what I think is a) husband-wife team is always warm from the minute I walk through the door through the whole process of my deciding how to fix the item til I finally leave. I appreciate their patience and adaptability. Always get the dry cleaned clothes back without issue and even quickly if I need them for a specific event. Brought in 4 pairs of jeans to be hemmed. The kind owner had me put on a pair so she could measure and mark them. She made sure to check with me that I had washed the jeans prior to account for shrinkage and then confirmed my request to hem them slightly differently in the front and the back so that the jeans would break better when standing. I paid $45 total which is a fair price. She gave me a time to pick them up and they were promptly ready when I arrived. When I dropped them off she confirmed with me multiple times to make sure that the estimated date was quick enough for me. The hems are clean and well done with threading that matches the original hem. All in all, great experience and will be coming back again. read more

They totally and utterly revitalized my white sweatshirt. Before, it had a deep orange/yellow stain entirely across the top portion of the sweatshirt due to it being next to a jar of chili oil in my carry-on luggage (I know, totally my fault). I guess it was a matter of time. Like a previous reviewer, I took an expensive dress shirt to be cleaned and it was returned with a 2 inch gash in the sleeve. When I returned with the shirt the female owner immediately said "IT'S NOT MY FAULT" and said she remembered the shirt having a rip. This is, of course, completely untrue. Her husband said it might have happened when the shirt was pulled during pressing and offered to fix it. When I returned to pick up the fixed shirt it was repaired with gray thread (the shirt was white with burgundy stripes). At this time I also picked up two additional shirts that had been left for cleaning. Neither was pressed adequately and there was a HUGE black STAIN on the sleeve of one. While it is one of the few options in West Philadelphia, I will no longer be patronizing Spruce Hill Cleaners. Extremely slow and expensive, cleaning three standard shirts took 2 days and the bill totaled to nearly $15 dollars. There is a $25 dollar minimum to use a credit card, and the staff can be frustrating at times. If possible, I recommend avoiding the shop. Head into the city where the prices are cheaper and the staff is much more pleasant. read more

Sure, there are probably closer places I could go to, but I've grown accustomed to making the occasional trek out to West Philadelphia for reasons related to my sartorial upkeep... They don't charge very much (I think I've paid about $5-8 per service, whether it's getting jeans hemmed or a piece of clothing dry cleaned), they get the job done, and the people are really sweet. After looking at multiple reviews, I finally settled on this place to get my wedding gown dry cleaned. I was extremely nervous as I hadn't worn it yet and it needed to be dry cleaned and pressed because it's vintage. Because it has delicate lace overlays and intricate ribbon work I was super nervous that it would come back damaged. I was quoted a price of $90 but after seeing my look of horror (I rarely go to the dry cleaners for anything other than a dress shirt) she knocked it down to $80. I had to wait 2 weeks for it, but it was completely worth it. The dress had been returned to a crisp white and the "vintage" (read: old lady) smell was completely gone. It looked like a new dress. I highly recommend Spruce Hill for vintage and formal attire. And on top of that they're very friendly. read more

A good place to go in the neighborhood for straightforward tailoring jobs. I've had jeans hemmed here and I had a zipper replaced in a dress. I really like this place. I have been going here for years and they are consistently high quality in their cleaning, never lose anything, and are always friendly. Service is quick and reliable. Alterations have been professional. Today I took a coat to them with a zipper that I thought was broken and the owner kindly showed me that the zipper wasn't in fact broken. I'm not sure if this was an act of magic on her part, or an act of incredible stupidity on my part, but either way what was great is that she could just have easily said, ok, give me the coat, I'll fix the zipper and charged me for priority service, since I needed the coat right away. Finally, the place is also a boutique with some one-of-a-kind pieces that are beautifully made and reasonably priced, as well as scarves, gloves, jewelry, bags. Her daughter is the buyer of these and has a really good eye, so this is one of my hidden treasure go-tos for gifts and unique but fashionable, well-made and well-fitting clothes. read more
